If you are looking into the future of your dynasty team, think about the timeline of which you are making your trades. When you are buying picks, embrace the long game.
Playing the Long Game
Contending teams frequently pay for current contention with future assets. When they do, the contending teams will look to buy players who are producing now by trading away picks or players who project to produce in the future.
This can be a good source of long-term value for the team selling contending assets. Trading current production for future picks gives your dynasty teams flexibility.
A key balance for trading contending players is how to capitalize on the value of picks. If you are trading a player that will help a contending team, there is a risk the player will hurt the value of the pick the following year.
One of the ways to benefit is to make the trade for a pick a year further.
Executing the Long Game
Chad and I discussed our trade in a co-managed team on this week’s Dynasty Show. In a 2TE league, our team has an extended problem with the tight end position. After attempting to fix the position over the past year, we had no success. Our team is competitive for a playoff spot, but we are not a real contender without a fix to the tight end position.
