NOTE: This column is a living document through Tuesday morning. I'll be updating as needed after team press conferences, imaging reports, Monday Night Football injuries, etc. Major changes to the content will be noted in red.
Scroll to the bottom of this article for a quick look table of the week's most pressing injury situations and a review of players on injured reserve / PUP / NFI.
Footballguys will have close and detailed coverage of all injuries this season. Here's a look at my expected schedule. I will do my best to stick to this. Work and family responsibilities may sometimes cause brief delays.
Monday Injury Rounds: Posted Sunday night, updated through Tuesday AM. Detailed analysis of the week's injuries with table for quick review. Offensive injuries will be live Sunday night. Critical defensive and offensive line injuries will be added throughout the day on Monday. I'll be updating with news and analysis through Tuesday.
Wednesday and Thursday Injury Expectations: Posted late Wednesday and Thursday evening. Analysis of the practice participation report with a table including my projection of each injured player's likely game status. Will include discussion of any major breaking injury news.
Sunday Gameday Expectations: Posted by Saturday afternoon, updated through Sunday morning inactives. Will include individual player blurbs with detailed thoughts on the week's injury news and my speculation on player availability and limitations. Will include table highlighting each day's practice participation, official game status, and my availability expectation.
I'll also be contributing to our waiver wire podcast (Tuesday release), our live Sunday morning pregame show (10 ET Sunday on YouTube), and plan at least one weekly Periscope Q&A (shortly before Monday Night Football) with additional shows if/when possible. As always, I will be retweeting key pieces of news and my own reaction and analysis, so make sure you're following @JeneBramel and checking my timeline on Twitter throughout the week.
INJURY ROUNDS
Dez Bryant | Right high ankle sprain | Week-to-Week
Bryant left in the second half with an ankle injury and did not return. Television replays showed a clear high ankle sprain mechanism. As we've seen many times previously, players who have a relatively mild high ankle mechanism sometimes struggle to return to play the following week. The next 24-48 hours are key for Bryant. If he has minimal swelling and soreness overnight, he'll have a good chance to return this week. If not, we'll see him significantly limited in practice and a game-time decision or worse. If we don't get an actionable update on Monday, the midweek practice reports will be our best chance at handicapping Bryant's odds of playing in Week 10.
***Monday Update: According to Jason Garrett, Bryant's injury is not serious and his follow-up exam this morning was reassuring. The team will likely limit Bryant's practice and it's too soon to assume Bryant will play without limitation this week. But today's note will hopefully prove accurate later in the week. Garrett also said Bryant is dealing with a knee injury. Whether it's the same injury Bryant was dealing with last week or a new injury is not known.
Jameis Winston | Right AC sprain w/ aggravation | Week-to-Week
Winston was again struggling to play through a throwing shoulder sprain before being driven to the turf and leaving the game on Sunday. The Buccaneers have limited Winston's practice for three weeks but have been unable to keep him clean enough to prevent in-game aggravations. Expect Winston to continue to try to play through his injury but there's been no indication he'll be able to do so without accuracy issues or avoid in-game setbacks.
***Monday Update: The Buccaneers told reporters on Monday they will rest Winston until his shoulder injuries heal. There are some discrepancies in today's reporting -- some have the timetable at a "couple of weeks" while others report a "few weeks" -- but the team will not rush his recovery. Once a player misses one game, it becomes much more likely he'll not return until near full strength.
***Monday Additions: Dan Quinn told reporters Devonta Freeman was dealing with an injury the team won't disclose until the Wednesday injury report. He's already been working through a shoulder injury. Quinn also said Julio Jones was fighting through a "lower leg" injury. Jones had his right leg bent awkwardly during the game and limped off and on the field throughout the day. Video replays show a mild high ankle sprain mechanism as well as an MCL mechanism. He's also likely considered day-to-day. Finally, Mike Mularkey confirmed DeMarco Murray played through an early game knee injury. Murray returned to play in the second half and will also be considered day-to-day.
Eddie Lacy | Groin strain | Week-to-Week
Pete Carroll was unsure of the severity of Lacy's injury after the game. Lacy was considered doubtful to return immediately after the injury and has a short turnaround before the Seahawks travel to Arizona to play Thursday night. It will be tough for Lacy to be ready to play.
Others of Note: Terrance Williams likely has a high ankle sprain. Ryan Griffin was ruled out with a concussion. Donte Fowler did not return after an elbow injury. Kenny Vaccaro was quickly ruled out with a groin strain. Jaquiski Tartt has a fractured arm and is expected to be placed on injured reserve.
FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENTS
Teddy Bridgewater | Left knee multi-ligament repair | Day-to-Day | Week 10 Return
Multiple reports confirm the Vikings plan to move Bridgewater to the active roster this week. Minnesota may not be ready to turn the starting job over to Bridgewater yet but he will be a significant upgrade to their current backup. If Case Keenum struggles or is injured, Bridgewater knows the offense well enough to step in quickly. It's an impressive recovery from a similar injury to the one that threatened Zach Miller's leg last week.
Zach Ertz | Hamstring strain | Day-to-Day | Week 11 Return
Ertz was added to last week's injury report after a Thursday hamstring strain. Early Sunday reports suggested Ertz would play but he was unable to get loose in warmups and was made inactive. Ertz will have the Eagles' Week 10 bye to continue rehab and recovery and should be available for Philadelphia's Week 11 game in Dallas.
Charles Clay | MCL sprain | Day-to-Day | Week 10+ Return
Clay continues to rehab and recondition, with multiple recent videos showing him sprinting in a straight line and stretching in pads. That's prompted speculation he's close to returning. What the videos have not shown is Clay cleared to cut at speed and run routes in pads. The original return-to-play expectation was 4-6 weeks and we're now just past the four week mark. It's possible Clay has recovered enough to return to practice and prepare to play this week. More likely, he'll return in Week 11 or 12.
David Johnson | Wrist fracture / dislocation | Month-to-Month
Last Monday, I referenced a quote from Bruce Arians, who told reporters in October that Johnson could return as early as Thanksgiving. Arians significantly changed his tune early last week, saying he doubted Johnson could return in 2017. That's a big change in his expectation. Notably, Adam Schefter interviewed Johnson last week and confirmed three important pieces of information.
First, Johnson told Schefter the earliest he would have his cast removed would be after Week 10 if his recovery continued to progress well. Second, Johnson hinted the team would be deliberate with his rehab and ensure he had recovered enough strength and range of motion to minimize the risk of longer-term complications. Third, Johnson said it was his intention that the Cardinals' position in the division and wild card standings would not affect his decision to return.
If Johnson gets his cast off before the Week 11 game, it's still possible he could complete his rehab by Week 14 but it's not assured. That may be why Arians seemed less assured than before. Regardless of the details to follow, the next hurdle for Johnson is the removal of his cast. If that happens after his next imaging visit next week, we're officially on rehab and return watch.
Danny Woodhead | Hamstring strain | Designated to Return | Week-to-Week | Week 11+ Return
The Ravens were comfortable designating Woodhead to return and starting his roster exemption timetable last week. He'll spend the Ravens' bye week reconditioning and working to prove he's ready to assume a role in the offensive game plan in Week 11. Watch for a Ravens' decision to move Woodhead to the active roster next week.
Dee Ford | Back injury | Week-to-Week
It is never a good sign when a player who misses multiple weeks with a back condition returns to play then again misses multiple weeks. Hopefully, Ford's issue is confirmed to be minor, but the timeline is suspicious for a disc-related condition. If that's the case, this could be Ford's second attempt at rehab. And, if unsuccessful, Ford could struggle to finish the season.
Others of Note: Sheldon Richardson could miss multiple weeks with an oblique abdominal muscle strain. Dede Westbrook was not moved to the active roster last week but is ready to return. Quietly, Lance Dunbar was removed from the Los Angeles PUP list and returned to practice.
