NOTE: This column is a living document through Tuesday morning. I'll be updating as needed after team press conferences, imaging reports, Monday Night Football injuries, etc. Major changes to the content will be noted in red.
Scroll to the bottom of this article for a quick look table of the week's most pressing injury situations and a review of players on injured reserve / PUP / NFI.
Footballguys will have close and detailed coverage of all injuries this season. Here's a look at my expected schedule. I will do my best to stick to this. Work and family responsibilities may sometimes cause brief delays.
Monday Injury Rounds: Posted Sunday night, updated through Tuesday AM. Detailed analysis of the week's injuries with table for quick review. Offensive injuries will be live Sunday night. Critical defensive and offensive line injuries will be added throughout the day on Monday. I'll be updating with news and analysis through Tuesday.
Wednesday and Thursday Injury Expectations: Posted late Wednesday and Thursday evening. Analysis of the practice participation report with a table including my projection of each injured player's likely game status. Will include discussion of any major breaking injury news.
Sunday Gameday Expectations: Posted by Saturday afternoon, updated through Sunday morning inactives. Will include individual player blurbs with detailed thoughts on the week's injury news and my speculation on player availability and limitations. Will include table highlighting each day's practice participation, official game status, and my availability expectation.
I'll also be contributing to our waiver wire podcast (Tuesday release), our live Sunday morning pregame show (10 ET Sunday on YouTube), and plan at least one weekly Periscope Q&A (shortly before Monday Night Football) with additional shows if/when possible. As always, I will be retweeting key pieces of news and my own reaction and analysis, so make sure you're following @JeneBramel and checking my timeline on Twitter throughout the week.
Injury Rounds
Aaron Rodgers | Fractured right collarbone | 8+ Weeks
Rodgers was driven into the turf by Anthony Barr and broke his right collarbone. The Packers said Rodgers would have a chance to return this season. Without more detail on the severity of the fracture and the likelihood of surgery, it's difficult to speculate whether Rodgers initial timetable will be 6-8 weeks or 8-12 weeks.
Rodgers suffered a similar injury in 2013 to his left shoulder and needed eight weeks of recovery before the team cleared him for contact. This injury is to his throwing shoulder and the Packers will be certain Rodgers has recovered sufficiently to have no subtle changes in his throwing motion. If he needs longer than eight weeks of rehab and the Packers are no longer competitive for a playoff spot by Week 15, it's possible Rodgers will shut it down for the season.
Green Bay has no significant names on their injured reserve list -- though that may change if David Bakhtiari's hamstring aggravation is significant -- and I it's likely the Packers will move Rodgers off the active roster. Don't expect to hear any actionable updates on Rodgers for at least six weeks.
***Monday Update: Mike McCarthy told reporters today Rodgers will have surgery on his fractured collarbone. The decision to have surgery could speed his rehab timetable slightly as Rodgers will likely be able to start strengthening and range of motion work sooner with a stable injury. But that doesn't mean Rodgers will avoid injured reserve or shave multiple weeks off his recovery timetable. The Packers continue to say Rodgers season is "potentially" over. Green Bay has not yet put Rodgers on injured reserve -- but they don't yet need his roster spot. If he stays off injured reserve through early next week, a return within 6-8 weeks could be possible.
Leonard Fournette | Right ankle sprain | Day-to-Day
Fournette had an ugly mechanism of injury at first glance, as the outside of his knee appeared to hyperextend as he planted to make a cut. On closer review, his right ankle rolled and slid, likely preventing any injury to the knee joint. The Jaguars reported the injury as an ankle injury and Fournette was cleared to return. Ultimately, Jacksonville chose to be cautious with Fournette and he did not return. I would expect Fournette to be limited in practice this week but he should be able to play.
Emmanuel Sanders | Right ankle injury | Awaiting Information
The mechanism of Sanders' ankle injury was consistent with a low ankle injury. Unfortunately, the mechanism was violent enough to raise concern for a fractured fibula. The Broncos carted Sanders into the locker room for x-rays. A high-grade ankle sprain, even of the low ankle variety, can be associated with a multiple-week absence. A fibular fracture could be severe enough to end Sanders' season. I'll update with additional information when available.
***Monday Update: X-rays on Sanders' ankle were negative, ruling out a leg fracture. He will undergo an MRI today to evaluate the severity of his ligament injuries. Negative x-rays are a good sign but Sanders could still miss time if his ligament sprain is higher grade.
***Monday Update 2: The Broncos say Sanders will miss this week's game and continue to be re-evaluated on a weekly basis.
Luke Kuechly | Concussion | Week-to-Week
Despite Adam Schefter's Sunday morning report that Carolina had not diagnosed Kuechly with a concussion, multiple follow up reports -- including one from the Panthers' public relations director -- confirmed Kuechly is in the concussion return-to-play protocol. It's a disturbing injury for Kuechly, who missed multiple games with a concussion at the end of the last season. Given his history, it's unlikely the Panthers will advance him through the return-to-play protocol quickly, even if his symptoms clear quickly.
Jameis Winston | right shoulder injury | Day-to-Day
Winston's shoulder injury looked similar to Rodgers' injury in some ways. But Winston's impact was direct to the top of his shoulder and he didn't have the additional rolling force through the chest and shoulder Rodgers experienced. It underlines the difficulty in speculating on injury mechanisms without the benefit of a physical examination. Thankfully for Winston, x-rays of his shoulder and clavicle are negative and it's believed he suffered only a minor AC sprain.
Winston tried to loosen up after the injury but was unable to return. He is expected to have an MRI on Monday to further evaluate the severity of his injury. Multiple quarterbacks have played through low grade throwing shoulder sprains in past seasons. If Winston's imaging study is reassuring and he experiences minimal stiffness and swelling over the next 48 hours, he may be able to play this week.
Tyreek Hill | Concussion | Week-to-Week
The Chiefs didn't officially confirm a diagnosis of a concussion for Hill, saying only he was "under evaluation." If Hill is confirmed to be in the team's return-to-play protocol, it will be very difficult for him to be cleared for contact in time for Thursday night's game in Oakland. Players have been cleared in three days in the past but it's rare and those players usually aren't traveling to an away game.
Golden Tate | Right shoulder injury | Awaiting Information
Tate sustained a hard hit to the outside of his shoulder and did not return. I find it difficult to accurately assess most shoulder injuries on video when the most likely diagnoses include clavicle fracture, AC sprain, and SC sprain. Even though Detroit is notoriously tight-lipped on injuries, I think we'd likely have heard if Tate had an x-ray showing a clavicle fracture. That leaves a sprain as the most likely diagnosis, with further imaging to define the severity of his injury to come early this week. His return-to-play expectation will depend on imaging studies and how he responds to treatment.
***Monday Update: Ian Rapoport tweeted Tate is "expected to miss time" with his shoulder injury. Results of his MRI are not yet known. Rapoport's source suggested the timeline would be measured in weeks.
***Monday Update 2: Tate was diagnosed with an AC sprain. No update on his timetable was provided. The Lions are on bye this week and we may not hear more on Tate's status until early next week or beyond.
Others of Note: Mike Pouncey and Brian Bulaga left their games with concussions. David Bakhtiari and Marcus Gilbert aggravated hamstring strains and could be out multiple weeks. Patrick Peterson left with a quad injury. Greg Robinson suffered an ankle injury. Breshad Perriman suffered a concussion. Maxx Williams aggravated the ankle injury that kept him out multiple weeks.
Follow-up Appointments
Sam Bradford | left knee injury | Week-to-Week
Teddy Bridgewater | Left knee dislocation / multiple ligament reconstructions | week-to-Week
Bradford did not return to practice last week after looking hobbled in his attempt to return after four weeks of rehab and recovery. Although Mike Zimmer tried to tell reporters Bradford should be considered day-to-day, no one who watched Bradford's comfort level on the field last week bought his argument. On Sunday, Jay Glazer reported Bradford's injury was worse than people know and beat writer Ben Goessling reported Bradford had an orthobiologic injection to address ongoing inflammation in his knee joint.
Those reports lend credence to what was already a foregone conclusion -- Bradford is not close to returning. Before the reports of Bradford's anti-inflammatory treatments, there was an outside chance Bradford could have been ready after Minnesota's Week 9 bye. Now, that's a tough ask.
Meanwhile, the news on Bridgewater continues to be positive. Multiple reports have Bridgewater ready to practice when eligible to come off the PUP list, which means the Vikings could have their former number one draft pick available to work as soon as this week. The Vikings will be deliberate with Bridgewater in practice and there's no guarantee he'll be moved to the active roster or ready to play before Minnesota's bye week either. But he'll likely be ready to play before Bradford.
***Monday Update: Bridgewater was cleared to return to practice by his surgeon today. It's not yet known whether the Vikings will activate and allow him to practice this week.
***Monday Update 2: Bridgewater will return to practice this week. That begins a three-week window in which Bridgewater can practice under a roster exemption. It's possible Bridgewater will be active before Minnesota's Week 9 bye if he quickly shows football readiness.
Andrew Luck | Right shoulder labrum repair | Week-to-Week
Luck continues to make progress in practice. Though he didn't practice every day for the second consecutive week, the Colts cleared Luck to participate in team drills and reports suggest he looked very good while running the scout team. Expect Luck to do more in practice this week. We're now in range of his return, with the Week 9 matchup against Houston his earliest potential return. Whether the Colts clear him for Week 9 or 10 or following their Week 11 bye remains to be seen. Based on last week's practice reports, I think there's a good chance we see Luck before the Colts' bye week.
Stefon Diggs | Groin strain | Week-to-Week
Diggs told reporters his groin injury was not as severe as the strain that significantly limited him for much of last season. However, any groin strain can be difficult to recover from quickly, and especially so with a short week of recovery. It's possible Diggs will practice this week and return to play but his inability to practice last week is worrisome.
DeVante Parker | Right ankle sprain | Week-to-Week
Most low ankle sprains are easily seen on video and most players do not miss time with those sprains. Parker did not have an obvious low ankle sprain mechanism and was unable to return to practice last week. While I didn't see a clear high ankle sprain on video, the developments of last week feel ominous. Hopefully, Parker returns to practice this week. If not, brace for another 1-2 weeks of recovery time.
Tyler Eifert | Back surgery | Injured Reserve
The Bengals didn't release details on Eifert's surgery, and would only confirm to beat writers that his surgery wasn't to address the same injury he had last year. However, it's very likely Eifert's current condition is related to degenerative changes near the same vertebral level of last year's surgery. It's also ominous that the team gave an initial timetable of 4-5 months. Most often, we hear a timetable of 6-12 weeks after surgeries to address degenerative disc changes -- and I usually argue it takes 6-8 weeks to heal but 4-6 months to recover core strength and conditioning. Hopefully, the timetable takes the added recovery into account. The alternative is a vertebral fusion, which is a more significant surgery and would put Eifert's career at risk. Either way, multiple surgical procedures to address degenerative disc changes are a career-shortening situation for Eifert. Hopefully, he can make a full recovery for 2018.
