NOTE: This column is a living document through Tuesday morning. I'll be updating as needed after team press conferences, imaging reports, Monday Night Football injuries, etc. Major changes to the content will be noted in red.
Scroll to the bottom of this article for a quick look table of the week's most pressing injury situations and a review of players on injured reserve / PUP / NFI.
Footballguys will have close and detailed coverage of all injuries this season. Here's a look at my expected schedule. I will do my best to stick to this. Work and family responsibilities may sometimes cause brief delays.
Monday Injury Rounds: Posted Sunday night, updated through Tuesday AM. Detailed analysis of the week's injuries with table for quick review. Offensive injuries will be live Sunday night. Critical defensive and offensive line injuries will be added throughout the day on Monday. I'll be updating with news and analysis through Tuesday.
Wednesday and Thursday Injury Expectations: Posted late Wednesday and Thursday evening. Analysis of the practice participation report with a table including my projection of each injured player's likely game status. Will include discussion of any major breaking injury news.
Sunday Gameday Expectations: Posted by Saturday afternoon, updated through Sunday morning inactives. Will include individual player blurbs with detailed thoughts on the week's injury news and my speculation on player availability and limitations. Will include table highlighting each day's practice participation, official game status, and my availability expectation.
I'll also be contributing to our waiver wire podcast (Tuesday release), our live Sunday morning pregame show (10 ET Sunday on YouTube), and plan at least one weekly Periscope Q&A (shortly before Monday Night Football) with additional shows if/when possible. As always, I will be retweeting key pieces of news and my own reaction and analysis, so make sure you're following @JeneBramel and checking my timeline on Twitter throughout the week.
Injury Rounds
Odell Beckham | Left high ankle sprain / Fibula fracture | 3-4+ Months | out for season
Beckham looked recovered from last week's minor aggravation of his high ankle sprain only to suffer a more severe injury during the second half of yesterday's game. Beckham's left ankle was bent awkwardly underneath him. The subsequent injury -- a torn syndesmotic ligament (i.e. high-grade high ankle sprain) and fibula fracture -- would have occurred regardless of whether Beckham's ankle had been fully recovered or not.
Beckham will require surgery to repair the fracture and ligament injury. The procedure carries a 3-4 month recovery timetable and will end Beckham's season. Without any unexpected setbacks, Beckham should be fully recovered in advance of training camp next year.
***Monday Update: The Giants didn't discuss specifics but confirmed Beckham will have surgery this week. Bob McAdoo told reporters Beckham would be out for the season. As noted above, it's reasonable to expect Beckham to be ready for training camp next year.
J.J. Watt | Right lateral tibial plateau fracture | 4-6 Months | Out for Season
Watt suffered a fracture to the top of his shin bone during Sunday night's game. It was reported before the game ended that Watt would require season-ending surgery. Tibial plateau fractures are relatively rare in the NFL. Recent comps include Dez Bryant, Anthony Hitchens, Randall Cobb, Nate Burleson, and Danny Trevathan. To my knowledge, however, there are no recent comps of players who had their fractures surgically fixed.
The severity of Watt's injury and necessity of surgical intervention is worrisome for his long-term recovery. An MRI will further define his injury but Watt undoubtedly damaged the cartilage overlying the portion of bone he injured. Even with a successful realignment of the fractured bone, damage to the cartilage will put Watt at higher risk of arthritic changes in the knee joint. Depending on the severity of the fracture and the surgical interventions required, Watt could need 4-6 months of recovery time. If the MRI shows additional ligament damage, his recovery could be longer.
***Monday Update: Watt will have surgery this week and is officially out for the season.
Rob Gronkowski | Thigh contusion | Day-to-Day | W6 Return
Gronkowski missed last Thursday night's game with a thigh contusion. New England beat writers didn't sense a severe injury but the bleeding in Gronkowski's muscle was significant enough to limit his mobility and the Patriots elected to rest him. Reports during the game suggested Gronkowski wouldn't miss additional time. If those reports are accurate, Gronkowski should be practicing -- although only the usual limited workout the Patriots ask of their injured players -- on Wednesday.
Travis Kelce | Concussion | Day-to-Day
Kelce was evaluated for a concussion twice during Sunday night's game. Kelce passed the initial examination but reportedly had some memory difficulty at halftime. Andy Reid told reporters after the game that Kelce was placed in the concussion protocol. He was seen interacting with friends and teammates in the locker room after the game. His availability this week will depend on how quickly his symptoms clear.
DeVante Parker | right ankle sprain | Week-to-Week
Early reports note Parker suffered an ankle sprain. Though partially obscured on the single replay angle, Parker's injury mechanism was not typical of a high ankle sprain or a low lateral ankle sprain. He may have a sprain to his midfoot or to the ligament on the inside of his ankle. Either injury would be more week-to-week than day-to-day depending on how much pain and swelling Parker has on Monday. The Dolphins will send him for an MRI for more information.
***Monday Update: Ian Rapoport tweeted Parker's sprain is believed to be minor and the Dolphins are hopeful he'll be able to return this week.
Brandon Marshall | Left ankle injury | Week-to-Week
Marshall's mechanism of injury was more easily apparent than Parker's. Marshall clearly has a sprain of the inside ligament of the ankle. Deltoid ligament sprains are more significant than lateral ankle sprains. An MRI will better define the extent of Marshall's injury but consider him questionable for Week 6.
Sterling Shepard | Left ankle injury | Week-to-Week
Shepard's injury wasn't seen on television replays. Shepard looked fine running his route stem then grabbed his left ankle after an incomplete pass and was unable to leave the field without assistance. There was no mechanism of injury on the hit during the incomplete target; Shepard's injury must have come on the in-breaking cut before the ball arrived. I'll follow up on the All-22 film but the Giants are saying Shepard's injury is similar to a preseason sprain and could mean a 1-2 week absence.
Charles Clay | Left MCL sprain | Week-to-Week
Clay could not bear weight on his left leg after taking a direct blow to the outside of his knee. The mechanism was concerning for a mid-high grade MCL injury. Given the difficulty Clay had leaving the field, it's also possible Clay suffered a bone bruise in the knee joint. Hopefully, Clay's injury proves minor but it has the look of a multiple-week absence.
***Monday Update: Sean McDermott told reporters today that Clay had arthroscopic surgery and will be out multiple weeks. While the Bills didn't specifically identify Clay's injuries, other reports suggest he suffered an MCL sprain (consistent with the mechanism of injury on video) and a meniscus tear. McDermott refused to say Clay would be out for the season, which strongly suggests the scope addressed the meniscus tear only and didn't repair/reconstruct the MCL injury. Higher grade MCL injuries usually take 4-6 weeks to heal. Rehabbing a meniscus trim could make it difficult for Clay to hit the quick end of that timetable.
Whitney Mercilus | Left pectoral tendon tear | Out for season
The Texans did not update Mercilus' condition after the game but the chest injury looked suspicious for a pectoral tendon tear. If that proves accurate, Mercilus will need surgery and would miss the rest of the season. With luck, Mercilus will only have a muscle injury and could return later this year with rest and rehab.
***Monday Update: The Texans told reporters Mercilus will be out for the season, confirming surgical repair of a torn pectoral tendon. He should return for 2018.
Others of Note: I'll be watching Green Bay's press conference carefully tonight. Jordy Nelson was reportedly held out of the final drive yesterday with a hamstring injury. Matthew Stafford may have suffered both a quad strain and ankle sprain yesterday. Andy Dalton suffered an ankle sprain. Both quarterbacks are considered day-to-day.
Followup Appointments
Marcus Mariota | Hamstring strain | Week-to-Week | W6+ Return
Mariota wasn't close to playing Sunday. He was not able to move comfortably enough to protect himself in the pocket and Mike Mularkey told reporters the initial timetable ranged from 2-4 weeks. Mariota has an extra day to recover before a Monday night game at home against Indianapolis. If he's more comfortable moving in practice this week, he'll have a good chance to return.
Derek Carr | Transverse process fracture | Day-to-Day | W6 Return
Carr was reportedly close to returning from a painful back injury and associated muscle spasm. However, it made little sense to risk his return a day or two early with two key divisional matchups against the Chargers and Chiefs looming. Carr should be sufficiently recovered to play this week, though he'll still require extra padding to protect the area and hopefully avoid additional trauma that could cause recurrent spasm to the area.
Julio Jones | Right hip flexor strain | Day-to-Day | W6 Return
Jones is expected to practice and play this week after taking the Falcons' bye week to rest and rehab. Hip injuries can be tricky for wide receivers. Strains can limit explosion off the line and out of route breaks. Hopefully, Jones can return to a full practice by the end of the week.
Andrew Luck | Right shoulder labrum repair | Week-to-Week | W8+ Return
Luck returned to practice last week, participating in light throwing drills to receivers on Wednesday and Friday. It's an interval improvement but doesn't put Luck much closer to playing than he was last week. The Colts have yet to clear him for consecutive throwing sessions in practice, which means he's not yet close to clearance for position-specific drills and another two weeks minimum from being cleared for contact. Jason La Canfora reported Sunday morning Luck would need another month of practice before being cleared to play. Sticking with my "minimum 2-3 weeks of practice before preparing to play" expectation, I do not see Luck returning before Week 8 -- and it seems likely to be later.
Ty Montgomery | Rib fractures | Week-to-Week
Montgomery worked out in pads and a protective vest this week but was not cleared for contact. He confirmed his injury as multiple rib fractures, an injury difficult for a medical staff to stabilize and limit pain. Montgomery should be closer to returning this week but the strong play of Aaron Jones may make it easier for Green Bay to continue to rest Montgomery's injury.
Jordan Reed | Sternoclavicular sprain | Day-to-Day
Reed was active last Monday night but played only 13 of 50 offensive snaps. Reed had five targets and three catches on those 13 snaps, however, and was included in the game plan. Still limited, Reed looked to be in pain when tackled but didn't appear to suffer any significant aggravations. With the bye week to continue recovery and rehabilitation, Reed should be able to play closer to his usual snaps this week.
