NOTE: This column is a living document through Tuesday morning. I'll be updating as needed after team press conferences, imaging reports, Monday Night Football injuries, etc. Major changes to the content will be noted in red.
Scroll to the bottom of this article for a quick look table of the week's most pressing injury situations and a review of players on injured reserve / PUP / NFI.
Footballguys will have close and detailed coverage of all injuries this season. Here's a look at my expected schedule. I will do my best to stick to this. Work and family responsibilities may sometimes cause brief delays.
Monday Injury Rounds: Posted Sunday night, updated through Tuesday AM. Detailed analysis of the week's injuries with table for quick review. Offensive injuries will be live Sunday night. Critical defensive and offensive line injuries will be added throughout the day on Monday. I'll be updating with news and analysis through Tuesday.
Wednesday and Thursday Injury Expectations: Posted late Wednesday and Thursday evening. Analysis of the practice participation report with a table including my projection of each injured player's likely game status. Will include discussion of any major breaking injury news.
Sunday Gameday Expectations: Posted by Saturday afternoon, updated through Sunday morning inactives. Will include individual player blurbs with detailed thoughts on the week's injury news and my speculation on player availability and limitations. Will include table highlighting each day's practice participation, official game status, and my availability expectation.
I'll also be contributing to our waiver wire podcast (Tuesday release), our live Sunday morning pregame show (10 ET Sunday on YouTube), and plan at least one weekly Periscope Q&A (shortly before Monday Night Football) with additional shows if/when possible. As always, I will be retweeting key pieces of news and my own reaction and analysis, so make sure you're following @JeneBramel and checking my timeline on Twitter throughout the week.
INJURY ROUNDS
Rob Gronkowski | Groin injury | Week-to-Week
Gronkowski left the game with a groin injury and didn't return. There wasn't a clear mechanism of injury but there were hints of both hip and back injuries. With Gronkowski's extensive history of back surgery, the report of a groin injury should be considered reassuring. Gronkowski told reporters he was fine and would talk on Monday. Don't be surprised to hear that Gronkowski will have an MRI; teams often request imaging studies to confirm a suspicion of a low-grade injury. Hopefully, he'll be no worse than limited in practice and ready to play next week. A mid-grade groin strain could cost him as much as 3-4 weeks.
Jordy Nelson | Quad injury | Day-to-Day
Nelson got his lower body tangled with a defender during a route and suffered a quad injury on Sunday night. After trying to stay loose on the exercise bike and then receiving treatment at halftime, Nelson was unable to return. It's possible Nelson's injury is minor and the Packers chose not to risk a compensatory injury by risking his return. The Packers have the benefit of a late afternoon home game next week. That could work in Nelson's favor.
Greg Olsen | Foot fracture | 10-12 Weeks
The majority of foot fractures away from the pile between the tackles are fifth metatarsal fractures. These require surgical fixation and are often given an initial 6-8 week recovery timetable. That's the smart money on Olsen, who will visit the NFL's most popular foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Robert Anderson, on Monday. While the initial timetable is usually 6-8 weeks, it's rare for a player to successfully recover within eight weeks. Those that try to return on the early end of the timetable frequently struggle to play to their pre-injury form. Expect Olsen to have surgery early this week, be moved to injured reserve, and be considered week-to-week around Week 11 when he'll be eligible to return.
Jimmy Graham | Left high ankle sprain | Week-to-Week
Pete Carroll said Graham "banged his knee" in his post-game press conference. That's not what the television angle showed, however. Looking at the video, I had concern for high ankle sprain and MCL sprain mechanisms. Graham then reached immediately for his knee and the Seattle medical staff first attended to his knee during their on-field exam. Graham was able to return to the game. While reassuring, that does not rule out an MCL sprain that could limit Graham this week. He also belongs on the list of players who may have a Monday MRI to better define the severity of injury. If a low-mid grade MCL injury (or, possibly, a bone bruise around the knee) is confirmed, Graham could miss anywhere from 1-4 weeks depending on how his knee recovers. Of note, Graham's patellar tendon tear was to his right knee and is not a concern here.
***Monday Update: Carroll told reporters today Graham was dealing with a sore ankle. As noted above, while he and the medical staff localized to the knee initially, Graham's injury mechanism was also concerning for a high ankle sprain. As with all high ankle sprains, the first 24-48 hours will be key. Swelling and soreness to the ankle will determine whether Graham will be limited this week and whether he'll miss time. Wednesday practice participation will be our next gauge of his status.
Jordan Reed | Sternoclavicular sprain vs chest contusion | Day-to-Day
Reed suffered an SC sprain in the third quarter yesterday. Unlike the more severe mechanisms of injury suffered by Ben Roethlisberger and Danny Amendola -- who missed 3-4 weeks with SC dislocations -- the hits that could have caused Reed's injury didn't appear significant. Reed has played through soft tissue sprains around his shoulder before and was able to return to the game yesterday. Reed will likely have an MRI to grade his injury on Monday. If Reed has only a low-grade sprain and his injury doesn't significantly hinder his ability to extend his arm away from his body, he may not be limited next week.
DeMarco Murray | Hamstring strain | Week-to-Week
After the game, Mike Mularkey told reporters he didn't want to risk additional injury to Murray. That may be coachspeak, but that decision was certainly easier with Derrick Henry running effectively. Aggravated hamstring strains are always worrisome and often require at least as much recovery time as the initial injury -- and sometimes more. Murray probably had a low-grade strain during the preseason. He wasn't kept out long and allowed to return to practice slowly. Until we learn otherwise, however, it's reasonable to expect Murray to be limited at best in Week 3.
Sam Bradford | Left knee bone vs cartilage contusion | Week-to-Week
After limping through pregame warmups, Bradford was declared inactive on Sunday after experiencing knee swelling and soreness after Monday night's game. There were all sorts of possible red herrings as Bradford's knee injury was reported through the weekend.
What drew the most attention on Twitter was a Sunday morning report by Ian Rapoport noting that Bradford's early week MRI was difficult to interpret due to the amount of scar tissue in the joint. That prompted concern that Bradford's ACL might not be intact or there was so much scar tissue involved Bradford would need a procedure to address the damage. Neither is likely. While rehab protocols after ACL reconstruction recommend immediate range of motion movements to limit the risk of scar tissue, it cannot be entirely prevented. And there's no chance the Vikings would have considered Bradford a game-time decision if his knee joint was unstable.
After the game, Mike Zimmer was predictably frustrated and vague in his press conference, saying Bradford would be "okay...maybe next week; maybe six weeks from now. He’s going to be OK. It’s a non-surgical issue. He’s going to be fine.”
If there's no concern about Bradford's ACL, what are we to make of reports that Bradford's MRI was both negative (as reported earlier in the week) and difficult to interpret due to scar tissue. While Bradford told reporters three years ago he had no cartilage damage in his surgically-repaired knee, it's likely that's the cause of his swelling and stiffness now. If Zimmer is accurate and there's no indication for surgery, Bradford is in fact week-to-week. It's difficult to know how soon the inflammation in Bradford's knee joint will cool down. In that respect, Zimmer's comments -- while seemingly intentionally misleading -- are likely accurate.
I wouldn't classify Bradford as "fine" if he has a condition that could take six weeks to heal. But that's likely an arbitrary comment and not a med-staff approved timetable. You should worry if Bradford decides to visit Dr. Andrews -- who performed his ACL reconstruction -- in person this week. Otherwise, consider Bradford questionable for Week 3 and monitor his practice participation for more information.
***Monday Update: Ian Rapoport called Bradford's injury a "cartilage issue" during a morning television interview, all but confirming what seemed to be the most likely scenario. Rapoport also said the Vikings are hopeful Bradford will play this week. It's too soon to know with certainty, however. Bradford made little improvement last week and couldn't extend his knee while walking with a limp yesterday morning. Dr. David Chao speculates the team may elect to drain fluid from the knee and potentially try a cortisone injection to calm inflammation. Expect Bradford's situation to continue to develop throughout the week.
***Monday Update 2: Tom Pelissero tweeted the most specific update yet on Bradford this afternoon, reporting the injury as a bone bruise and confirming Chao's speculation that Minnesota will attempt an injection to treat inflammation in the area. A bone bruise and cartilage damage are not exclusive to each other. Commonly, the area of bone around the knee joint that has been bruised is covered by cartilage -- both structures can be injured.
The expectation for Bradford doesn't change much here if the bone bruise is minor and the limiting factor is inflammation and fluid in the joint. If his knee responds to the injection and further rehab, he could return as soon as this week. If the limiting factor is the severity of the bone bruise, it may be longer. Either way, it's a week-to-week situation and should not be considered season-threatening.
Jordan Howard | Left shoulder injury | Day-to-Day
Howard landed on the outside of his shoulder last Sunday and was limited in practice all week. The Bears provided no information on the injury but the mechanism of injury wasn't classic for an AC sprain and raised concern about a rotator cuff contusion or other injuries around the joint capsule. Howard left the locker room with a sling after struggling through a nine carry, seven-yard performance. I'm not optimistic but hope to hear more details on Howard in Monday's press conference. I have him listed day-to-day for now but consider that a tentative and hopeful estimate.
Cam Newton | Left ankle sprain | Day-to-Day
Newton had his left leg awkwardly folded underneath him on Sunday. His injury was announced as an ankle injury and replay showed a mechanism consistent with a low ankle sprain. Newton returned to the game and isn't likely to miss time. Accuracy issues have plagued Newton through two games. This ankle injury -- which is to the same ankle he had surgically addressed three years ago -- could also limit his accuracy and could further limit his ability to threaten defenses as a runner.
Tyler Eifert | Back / Knee injuries | Week-to-Week
***Monday Update: Adam Schefter tweeted Monday morning that Eifert is "battling back and knee injuries" and called his status "uncertain" this week. That's ominous for multiple reasons.
First, Eifert spent the offseason recovering from December back surgery and the team didn't clear him to return to full activity until training camp. While I'm often skeptical of the 8-12 week recovery period we often hear reported after a microdiscectomy, Eifert wasn't cleared for over eight months for more than light positional activity. Until reported otherwise, it's easy to speculate Eifert's back injury is related to his previous injury and surgery.
Second, Eifert missed time late in the preseason with knee tendinitis. Already worrisome as a possible cascade injury, Schefter is now putting the knee concern on the same plane as the back issue. Both injuries may need time to cool off.
Finally, we rarely get actionable information on Cincinnati injuries. Other than the Bob Holtzmann - A.J. Green connection, we're usually left to read between the lines of Marvin Lewis coach speak. This may prove to be nothing. But "his status for Sunday vs the Packers is uncertain" is a meaningful red flag. I'll update further after the Bengals' Monday press conference.
Randall Cobb | Shoulder injury | Day-to-Day
While there was no obvious mechanism of injury on first review, Cobb left Sunday night's game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury. He looked to be describing the injury as having his shoulders crunched together while in uniform on the sideline talking to a teammate. There were no post-game updates. I'll have more after Green Bay's press conference on Monday.
Corey Davis | Hamstring strain | 2-4 weeks
Davis returned to the game in short-yardage situations after aggravating a preseason hamstring strain. That sounds reassuring but Mike Mularkey also said they didn't feel comfortable exposing him to deeper routes where Davis would need to reach top speed. Long-time readers know what I'm typing next: Aggravated muscle strains usually require as long (or longer) to recover from as the initial injury. Davis missed multiple preseason weeks with a hamstring strain. There's room to hope the Titans were cautious with a very low-grade aggravation but prepare for a multiple-week absence.
Corey Coleman | Hand fracture | 4-6+ Weeks
The Browns haven't released details on Coleman's injury. But hand fractures generally take around six weeks to heal and wide receivers struggle to play with any size splint. Coleman fractured a hand early last season and missed seven weeks. That's a reasonable starting point for this injury.
Marshal Yanda | Left leg fracture | Out for Season
Yanda had his lower leg caught under a Cleveland defensive lineman and suffered a broken bone in his lower leg. The mechanism was consistent with at least a high-grade high ankle sprain with a fracture. Yanda was able to walk off the field bearing weight on his left leg. That's reassuring against a fracture in his shin bone but his injury will end his season. Expect to hear Yanda will have surgery and be placed on injured reserve soon.
Jason Verrett | Knee injury | Week-to-Week
Verrett was added to the practice participation report on Thursday and declared out on Friday. Anthony Lynn called Verrett week-to-week but wouldn't give specifics on an MRI ordered after Verrett experienced soreness in his surgically-repaired knee.
Mitch Morse | Midfoot sprain | Week-to-Week
***Monday Update: Ian Rapoport tweeted that Morse suffered a foot sprain on Sunday. Video review shows a non-contact, twisting mechanism suspicious for a Lisfranc injury. An MRI is pending but Rapoport tweeted Morse will miss time. If Morse needs surgery, this is likely a season-ending injury. If not, 6-8 weeks of recovery may still be needed.
Others of note: Kwon Alexander has a hamstring strain. Chris Hogan limped through the game with an unspecified knee injury. Jamie Collins was diagnosed with a concussion. Cordy Glenn left with an ankle injury. Vic Beasley Jr didn't return after a hamstring injury. Rob Kelley may have a fractured rib and could miss at least a week. Rex Burkhead also left with a rib injury. Garrett Bolles suffered at least a mid-grade high ankle sprain and is likely to miss multiple weeks. ***Monday Update: An MRI showed a high ankle sprain and bone bruise and it's unlikely Bolles will return until after Denver's Week 5 bye. Mike Daniels suffered what looked to be a mid-grade hamstring injury. T.J. Watt left with a groin injury. Kevin Johnson will miss 4-6 weeks with an MCL sprain. Mason Foster returned to the game after a shoulder dislocation. Nick Kwiatkoski has a pectoral injury that could end his season. ***Monday Update: Ian Rapoport confirmed Kwiatkoski will miss the season. Eric Reid will have an MRI after a non-contact knee injury he was unable to play through despite multiple attempts to return to the game. ***Monday Update: Reid's MRI showed a low-grade PCL sprain that will not require surgery. He is week-to-week.
FOLLOWUP APPOINTMENTS
Andrew Luck | Right shoulder labrum repair | 2-4+ Weeks
Luck didn't return to individual or team drills last week but was seen on the sideline for the first time. We're still on practice watch with Luck and anxiously awaiting an announcement that he'll be cleared to throw routes to receivers in some capacity. When that happens, the return-to-play clock starts running. At minimum, I believe Luck will need at least two weeks to get into football shape and gain clearance to play.
Odell Beckham | Left high ankle sprain | Day-to-Day
I'm expecting Beckham to be active Monday night and play a limited role. I'll have an update here after the game.
John Brown | Quad soreness | Week-to-Week
Sadly, Brown could not practice last week with what's likely be recurrent and sickle-cell trait related soreness in his quad muscle. Bruce Arians would not provide a timetable for Brown's return and the wide receiver did not speak to the media last week. When battling quad soreness this preseason, Brown missed multiple weeks of practice and said he'd return only when he felt fully recovered. It's unlikely he'll return this week unless he surprisingly returns to a full practice after last week's absence.
Josh Doctson | Hamstring strain | Day-to-Day
After another week of limited practice with ongoing soreness in his hamstring, Doctson was active and managed 29 snaps. He was targeted just once and Washington seems reluctant to include him heavily in the game plan until they can trust he'll be able to participate in practice. He remains at risk of an aggravation or compensatory injury.
Others of note: Danny Amendola did not practice last week and it's unclear whether the concussion or knee injury (or both) is the primary limitation. Mike Iupati continues to miss time with a triceps injury. Bryan Bulaga and David Bakhtiari were inactive on Sunday night. Markus Wheaton is expected to return this week after missing time with a finger fracture. Deone Bucannon will have a chance to return after rehabbing from ankle surgery and subsequent sprain.
