Hi Folks,

Welcome to Friday. We've got the News and Notes you need plus some fresh new articles for your Friday enjoyment. Also, I apologize yesterday for the error where we listed the Chargers as SD instead of LA. Old habits die hard I guess. My apologies. Have a great Friday and let's get to it.

1. TB - RB Doug Martin OK after accident

Source: PewterReport.com - Trevor Sikkema

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin suffered minor cuts and bruises as a result of a car accident Thursday, May 4, according to a report from the Tampa Police Department.

Looks like Martin will be fine and we can go to DEFCON 3. We feel like Martin could bounce back this year as the offense overall looks much more potent.

2. NFL - QB Jay Cutler moving to broadcasting?

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears) has auditioned for a broadcasting career, which could signal his retirement is imminent.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd draft Tony Romo over Jay Cutler in a fantasy broadcaster league, but the train wreck factor of Cutler's "I have no cares to give" personality could be worth the price of admission. We're a bit surprised there's no interest in Cutler. Then again, the teams who need a quarterback are looking for younger talent with more upside and less grouchiness.

3. LAC - Anthony Lynn believes in QB Philip Rivers

Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers has started 176 consecutive games, and head coach Anthony Lynn believes he has another three or four productive years ahead of him. The Chargers did not a draft a quarterback because Lynn still has high expectations for his veteran quarterback. 'We definitely think Philip can still play,' Lynn said. 'Whoever we drafted was going to have to come in and sit for a while because I think Philip is going to continue to play at a high level.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rivers has been up and down over the latter half of his career and last season was one of the worst he's had in some time, with the highest interception total (21), and third lowest completion percentage (60.4) of his career. It's good the Chargers believe in him, but how many times can he reboot his career? We'll see if an upgraded O-Line and added weapons helps Rivers play better.

4. DET - QB Matthew Stafford talks in early stages

Source: CBSSports.com - Jared Dubin

Updating previous reports, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's extension talks remain in the early stages, according to Lions general manager Bob Quinn.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Given how hard to come by quarterbacks are, getting ahead of the game to lock Stafford down is smart for the Lions. Stafford is coming off a solid year after throwing for 4,327 yards, 24 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions, and it seems as if he has settled into life after Calvin Johnson just fine.

5. NFL - TE Gary Barnidge may talk with JAX, CAR

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Updating a previous report, free-agent TE Gary Barnidge (Browns) may meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barnidge could be an interesting fit for either team, though he might make more hay from a fantasy standpoint in Jacksonville as he would have less competition for touches at tight end. In Carolina he would be firmly behind Greg Olsen.

6. OAK - QB Derek Carr to start extension talks soon

Source: Sirius XM NFL Radio - Alex Marvez

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr will begin contract extension talks with the Raiders in the near future, according to general manager Reggie McKenzie.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carr was a second-round pick, so there was no fifth-year option available to pick up. Entering the final year of his contract, Carr has proven that he's one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. This is the biggest no-brainer in the history of Earth...the Raiders will find a way to get Carr an extension that makes him one of the highest paid players at his position.

7. ARI - WR John Brown had cyst removed

Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (back) had a cyst removed from his spine following the final game of last season. Brown had been dealing with a sickle cell trait last season and his production suffered because of it. After the cyst was removed, though, he was back to normal. Brown said his body has been feeling better and he's back in his normal routine and back to being himself.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopefully this is the end of the larger issues for Brown but he has a lot of competition to crawl over to be a fantasy force.

8. NYJ - QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson will try out for Jets

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

Free-agent QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson (Eagles) will participate in the New York Jets' rookie minicamp Friday, May 5, on a non-roster tryout basis.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It wouldn't shock anyone if he not only made the team but won the job considering how bad the selection there is. But that's more about how bad everyone else is versus how good this new addition could be. Fantasy owners are not going to be lining up around the block like it's the premiere of "The Last Jedi" when it comes to drafting a Jets quarterback in 2017.

9. NYJ - New York releases three players

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Jets FS Marcus Gilchrist was released Thursday, May 4. CB Nick Marshall and FB Chris Swain were waived.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We figured it was only a matter of time for Gilchrist after they drafted two safeties last week.

10. SF - RB Mike Davis released

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

San Francisco 49ers RB Mike Davis was released Thursday, May 4, according to a source.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis had a bit of hype surrounding him coming out of South Carolina in 2015. A fourth-round pick that year, Davis leaves San Francisco with only 108 yards rushing in two years combined. He may struggle to find work, and if/when he does it's not like we'll expect him to play up to the potential he showed with the Gamecocks years ago.

11. BAL - RB Terrance West has stars aligned

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RB Terrance West is in a favorable position after the team didn't draft a running back in the 2017 NFL draft or free agency.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Despite sharing the load with several other backs, West ran for 774 yards and while guys like Kenneth Dixon are still around, West is likely in control of his destiny. We still aren't completely sold on him as a fantasy starter, as we still think he shares carries, but he's a solid backup or flex player at this point. Out of the Ravens backfield (Danny Woodhead, Kenneth Dixon, Terrance West) it's West with the lowest current ADP in 12-team PPR leagues of RB63 (13.11). That could change as we get closer to the year and with Dixon's four-game suspension looming.

12. SEA - RB Kelvin Taylor released

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

Seattle Seahawks RB Kelvin Taylor was released Thursday, May 4, according to a source.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The son of Jaguars great Fred Taylor, Kelvin has bounced around the league in just one year of being a pro. It looks like he may struggle to latch on at the pro level.

13. SF - Reuben Foster had concussions

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

San Francisco 49ers LB Reuben Foster (concussion) suffered multiple concussions during his time at the University of Alabama and there was concern in regards to his recovery time.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This should be a concern for everyone as most players coming out of college have been hit enough to worry about it. Foster should be fine, but the Niners will want to watch it long term. They felt good enough to take him near the end of the first round in the 2017 NFL draft.

14. SEA - S Earl Thomas should be ready

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas (leg) is expected to be healthy enough to play by Week 1, head coach Pete Carroll reiterated Thursday, May 4. Thomas fractured his tibia late last season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While he may be expected back, the Seahawks did pick up three safeties in the NFL Draft, so they are clearly looking long term at the position. None were terribly high picks - Delano Hill was the highest pick, selected in the third — but the way the Seahawks build teams, they could all contribute.
