Hi Folks,

Welcome to the Weekend.

First off, you may know that a big chunk of the internet broke yesterday for a while as several of the big hosting companies had some downtime. Two of our friends were affected with the folks at FJ Fantasy Draft Boards and the FFPC High Stakes Draft Leagues were down for a bit. FJ was especially bad timing as their hosting site went down about the time that our Email Update hit mailboxes with the FJ advertisement in it. They've asked me to apologize for the inconvenience and I hope you'll check them out at http://www.fjfantasy.com/ And of course you know we love the FFPC guys. All good with them but they too apologize for any trouble. Neither company of course had any control over the downtime - but it still sucks.

We've got some fantastic new features for you guys today plus big news about our Mobile Apps AND the News and Notes you need. So let's get to it.

F. 3 Year Footballguys Insider Subscription Returns
We initially took this away as an option, because we hated the idea that someone purchased the 3 year expecting something and that feature was changed/dropped, etc.

We have a lot of people asking us to bring it back though. And the truth is these are the guys that have been with us for the longest and our biggest cheerleaders.

So we have brought it back. It's $64.95 for the three-years. This will add on to whatever balance you have.

For people that wanted this option, but it wasn't available:

- You can request a refund by sending an email to: gray@footballguys.com - Put REFUND in the Subject
- Just add on another three years to what you have

We are making no guarantee that we will be offering this next year or beyond. But we will feel we pulled the rug out without notice this year and decided to change course to our most loyal readership.

G. Player Spotlight: David Wilson
Our Jason Wood with a detailed look at David Wilson's fantasy prospects for 2013. How does the loss of Ahmad Bradshaw affect the offense? What about Andre Brown? Can Wilson stay out of Tom Coughlin's DogHouse? We dig into these questions and much more.

Amendola isn't hurt (yet?) but our Matt Waldman does some hypothetical analysis looking at what might happen for the Patriots if Danny Amendola were to miss time. Matt takes a deep look at how Julian Edelman, Shane Vereen and even Tim Tebow would be affected.

J. Hypothetical Thinking - What If Rob Gronkowski Gets Hurt?
Rob Gronkowski is working hard to be back this year, but our Matt Waldman does some hypothetical analysis looking at what might happen for the Patriots if Gronkowski were to miss time. Matt takes a deep look at how Tom Brady, Steven Ridley, Danny Amendola and more would be affected.

BUF - QB EJ Manuel receives tall praise

Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley said QB EJ Manuel has the 'it' factor and will be the face of the franchise. 'Most successful quarterbacks have that 'it' factor. (Manuel) has that 'it' factor,' Whaley said. 'When he walks into a room, there's a presence and people take notice. He's going to be the face of our franchise, and it's not too big for him.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peter King from Sports Illustrated made similar comments about Manuel earlier this week. It is beginning to seem like Manuel will start very early in the season, if not week 1. His running ability will be something that he has to rely on as a young quarterback (and by design in the read option), so he could be a low QB1 in fantasy leagues. Manuel is part of the unprecedented depth and upside at quarterback this year.

NYJ - QB competition fairly even

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has outperformed QB Mark Sanchez during the first week of training camp but the competition is believed to be fairly even because of Sanchez's experience. Smith and Sanchez are expected to split reps evenly with the first-team offense during the team's scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 3. Smith said he believes the scrimmage will give him a chance to show the coaches what he can do.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Smith and Sanchez are even now, Smith will have to get worse to lose the job because there's no reason for the Jets to slow his development by putting Sanchez on the field when the two are close. Look for Smith to win the job, which is good for the offense. It would also add another quarterback that could be a solid waiver wire pickup early in the season, assuming the Jets also install some read option looks in the running game.

NE - WR Julian Edelman leaves practice

Source: WEEI.com - Christopher Price

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (undisclosed) left practice early Friday, Aug. 2, after suffering an undisclosed injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Uh oh. Edelman has had trouble staying on the field and already had a setback with a foot injury earlier in the offseason. He is in line to push to start opposite Danny Amendola, or at least have the plum fantasy spot as backup to Amendola in the offense. Early reports are that this is an issue with the same foot he broke last December.

SEA - Will add WR Early Doucet

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The Seattle Seahawks will sign free-agent WR Early Doucet (Cardinals).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doucet is a solidly-built receiver with good run after catch ability, but he has been inconsistent and oft-injured so far in his career. He could push for a roster spot if early camp sensation Stephen Williams falls off.

CLE - RB Trent Richardson sits out practice

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski said RB Trent Richardson (shin) did not participate in practice Friday, Aug. 2, because he was kicked in the shin during practice Thursday, Aug. 1. Chudzinski said he is not sure if Richardson will be able to practice Saturday, Aug. 3, but is not worried about the injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are worries that Richardson's durability may limit his short and long-term upside, but this sounds like nothing. We're still treating him like a solid mid-to-late first round pick.

SD - WR Vincent Brown sits

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic

San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Brown (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, Aug. 2.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is one of a growing list of wide receivers battling hamstring injuries early in camp. If this persists through the preseason, it could slow down the sleeper train that has been pushing Brown's ADP up into the 10-11th round range in PPR leagues.

SF - WR Austin Collie signed

Source: FOXSports.com - Mike Garafolo

The San Francisco 49ers have signed free-agent WR Austin Collie (Colts). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The young receivers on the 49ers roster are falling by the wayside with injuries, so this could be to get a camp body as much as anything else. Collie is more of a slot receiver, which isn't really a big role in the 49ers offense.

ARI - Ryan Williams not ready to return

Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB Ryan Williams (knee) continues to sit out practice and does not have a timetable for his return. He said he is dealing with irritation of the fatty pad below the patellar tendon and that rest is the only way to get rid of the irritation.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It appears that Williams is not trusting his knee right now, which is troubling considering that it has been two years since it was surgically repaired. He is a very talented back, but it's hard to like him in the short and long term with a knee problem that still hasn't gotten to the point where Williams doesn't think about it.

NYJ - RB Chris Ivory may have suffered setback

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory (hamstring) was wearing pads at the start of practice Friday, Aug. 2, but may have suffered a setback because he worked on a stationary bike and did not participate in position drills.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No one knows when Ivory will be back, and no one knows how far his ADP is going to fall while he's out. It's hard to like him before the 7th/8th round until news gets more positive.

NYG - WR Hakeem Nicks expected back Tuesday

Source: New York Post - Bart Hubbuch

Updating a previous report, New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (groin) is expected to return to practice Tuesday, Aug. 6, according to head coach Tom Coughlin.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Now that we have a hard date, we can gauge whether Nicks is keeping up with expectations. It's possible that Coughlin said this to push Nicks to get back on the practice field. It's not time to get worried yet, but Nicks' injury history makes this an essential situation to monitor.

DAL - QB Tony Romo to miss first preseason game

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Calvin Watkins

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) will not play in the teamís first preseason game Sunday, Aug. 4. The decision was made because of offensive line issues, and the team having five preseason games. The decision was not based on the offseason back surgery Romo had.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no reason for the Cowboys to be anything but cautious with their franchise quarterback. He's an excellent value as one of the last QB1's off of the board.

HOU - RB Ben Tate injures groin

Source: Houston Chronicle - Tania Ganguli

Houston Texans RB Ben Tate (groin) said his groin tightened up Friday, Aug. 2, and he left practice early. He hopes to return to practice Sunday, Aug. 4, after the off day.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This sounds minor, but it will open the door for the UDFA rookie trio of Dennis Johnson, Cierre Wood, and Ray Graham. Hopefully one will stand out with the first team while we're waiting for Tate and Arian Foster to return and give us an idea who has the inside track to the #3 job. The Texans have a plug and play running game, so any competent back who starts during the season will give us RB2 value with RB1 upside that week.

HOU - RB Arian Foster to begin practicing

Source: Houston Chronicle - Tania Ganguli

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (calf) will come off the Physically Unable to Perform list and begin practicing Sunday, Aug. 4.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As long as he practices soon and plays in the third preseason game, our Dr. Jene Bramel advises to not move Foster out of your elite running back tier. Backup Ben Tate is dealing with a groin injury, so Foster might be returning to practice just in time to keep one of the undrafted rookie trio from getting extensive first-team carries.

GB - Not worried about WR Randall Cobb's drops

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tyler Dunne

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said he is not worried about WR Randall Cobb dropping passes even though Cobb has dropped at least four passes in competitive drills since training camp began. 'Randall Cobb catches the football very well,' McCarthy said. 'He might drop a ball. I don't know if there's a concern. But it's something we spend a lot of time on. We need to catch the football better....I've never been part of a perimeter group that accepts anything less than being 100 percent, and that's what we're striving for.' Cobb dropped a team-high 10 passes last season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cobb has never been a drop-prone player, so this is a non-story until it starts happening regularly in the games that count.

TB - WR Chris Owusu turning heads

Source: The Tampa Tribune - Roy Cummings

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Owusu showed consistency so far during training camp, impressing the coach staff and fellow players. 'He's done a good job so far,' head coach Greg Schiano said. 'Now, it's only been a few practices, but you can only evaluate people on what they do and so far he's done a good job.' Owusu is locked in a battle with WRs Kevin Ogletree and Tiquan Underwood for the third receiver job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Owusu is tough with great straight-line speed. He fell out of the draft because of his multiple concussion history, but he could be a name to stash away if he wins the #3 job. The Bucs have a good downfield passing offense, and Owusu would be in line to start if either of Mike Williams or Vincent Jackson were to go down.

PHI - WR DeSean Jackson returns to practice

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson (toe) returned to practice Friday, Aug. 2.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson has a real chance to post a career high in catches and otherwise establish himself as the top pass-catching target in this fast-paced offense.

PHI - WR Riley Cooper excused from team activities

Source: PhiladelphiaEagles.com

Philadelphia Eagles WR Riley Cooper was excused from all team activities Friday, Aug. 2, as he seeks counseling for recent off the field actions.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The locker room is divided, and Cooper's presence would only exacerbate that. There's a good chance that he has played his last down with the Eagles, and it might take some time before another team brings him in.

BUF - WR Robert Woods impressing

Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods has impressed the team with his polish. 'When he came into OTAs and even out here for training camp, he looks like a 10-year veteran,' general manager Doug Whaley said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Woods is on track to be the team's #2 receiver, but it seems like this will be an offense that uses all of their talent at wide receiver and features CJ Spiller. Woods has marginal value for redraft leagues, but if Stevie Johnson struggles to stay healthy, he could be quality waiver wire fodder in PPR leagues. This report matches his reputation as a very polished receiver in the mold of former USC wideout Steve Smith.

CIN - WR Andrew Hawkins not expected to miss much time

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals WR Andrew Hawkins (ankle) is not expected to miss more than two weeks because the ankle injury he suffered during practice Thursday, Aug. 1. He is not expected to travel with the team to Atlanta for joint practices and a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hawkins' injury is going to give Mohamed Sanu and Tyler Eifert a chance to carve more into his workload as a slot receiver. The team has an embarrassment of riches of young passcatchers, and Hawkins needs to stay on the field to preserve his place in the pecking order. He's not worth a pick in redraft leagues right now, and his dynasty value is questionable because of his crowded situation.

MIA - Two WRs unlikely to play in preseason game

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace (groin) and WR Brian Hartline (calf) want to play in the Hall of Fame Game but likely will not because they are dealing with injuries. Both players missed practice Friday, Aug. 2.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

On the plus side, this should allow Ryan Tannehill to get some targets to new receivers Brandon Gibson and Dustin Keller in the few series he works in Canton this weekend.

SEA - WR Sidney Rice could practice soon

Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks WR Sidney Rice (knee) could return to practice as soon as Sunday, Aug. 4.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If he can, then we won't drop him on our boards at all, and consider him a possible beneficiary of Percy Harvin's misfortune. Golden Tate is still catching our attention and could eventually pass Rice as the Seahawks wide receiver to target late in drafts.

BUF - Stevie Johnson injury update

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills WR Stevie Johnson (hamstring) has been diagnosed with a hamstring strain after undergoing an MRI. There is no timetable for his return.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's time to drop Johnson to the bottom of the very deep WR2/WR3 tier. He was already coming into the season with a back problem from the offseason, and the Buffalo offense will be using a lot of new talent at the receiver position. Highly talented UDFA Da'Rick Rogers should get a lot of first-team action while Johnson is out.

NYJ - WR Stephen Hill looking solid

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill has looked sharp since training camp started except for one bad drop during a practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill is available for a song in redraft leagues and maybe an EP in dynasty leagues, as the Jets offense seems like a wasteland. His speed and size could make him a good target on plays that Geno Smith keeps alive to improvise as a downfield passer. We're open to him as a late-round sleeper if he continues to build momentum.

NO - WR Marques Colston might be back soon

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune - Mike Gegenheimer

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston (foot) is still sidelined due to a foot injury, but head coach Sean Payton said Friday, Aug. 2, that Colston could practice soon. 'Nothing new. I think we're getting close, though, so we'll see,' Payton said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

"We'll see" isn't that comforting, but there's no reason to get too worried yet. If Colston can't suit up by the third preseason game, it might be time to start looking closer at Nick Toon and Joseph Morgan, but not before that unless we get indications that Colston's foot issue is more serious than the Saints are letting on.

CAR - No practice for RB Jonathan Stewart

Source: Charlotte Observer - Jonathan Jones

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) did not practice Friday, Aug. 2, due to an ankle injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No one knows for sure when Stewart will return, and that includes the possibility of an absence that extends into the regular season.

DAL - Nate Livings having surgery

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys OG Nate Livings (knee) will have a second surgery on his right knee in six months, according to sources. His last surgery was in February, and he aggravated his knee during organized team activities in May. Typical recovery time for a knee scope is two to four weeks, putting his Week 1 status in doubt. OG Ronald Leary (back), who is competing with Livings for the starting spot, returned to practice this week. OT Jermey Parnell (hamstring) has missed most of the practices in camp, C Ryan Cook (back) has an achy back and OG Kevin Kowalski (knee) is out two to four weeks with a bruised knee.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys interior offensive line has been a mess for a few years, and it didn't take long for this year's group to fray at the edges. Demarco Murray and Tony Romo will persevere, but without continuity and health at guard and center, this offense won't come close to hitting its ceiling.

TB - WR Mike Williams exits

Source: The Tampa Tribune - Roy Cummings

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Williams (undisclosed) left practice Friday, Aug. 2.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams has a "slight" hamstring strain according to head coach Greg Schiano. He should be back in practice early next week. As long as he is, we won't adjust our outlook for his fantasy prospects this year. Williams is generally underrated as a strong WR2/WR3 that you can get for low WR3 prices.

BUF - DE Mario Williams nearing a return

Source: ESPN.com

Buffalo Bills DE Mario Williams (foot) is nearing a return to practice in training camp after missing some time with a sore foot. 'It's getting closer,' head coach Doug Marrone said. 'He did a little bit more today, he's going out there, going through the walkthrough, so now we're just waiting for the doctor to release him and then he'll be going out there.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This seems like it isn't going to be a big deal, but we will still feel better when Williams is back on the field. He isn't quite as risky as Jason Pierre-Paul among elite DL, but we wouldn't want to have to count on the combination.
