NYG - Two RBs listed as co-starters

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Mike Mazzeo

New York Giants RBs David Wilson and Andre Brown are listed as co-starters at running back on the team's first depth chart. Wilson is also listed as the main kick returner.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We love when the first depth charts start coming out across the NFL. The Giants are going to use a 'hot hand' approach at the RB position in 2013. Wilson should be the lead back with Brown serving as a power change of pace and goalline back.

PHI - QB Michael Vick leading competition

Source: CSNPhilly.com - Jordan Raanan

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick won the quarterback competition by a long shot over QB Nick Foles in practice Wednesday, July 31. Vick connected with WR DeSean Jackson on two long touchdown scores. Vick tossed three TDs on the day and had some nice scrambles. Foles looked average and QB Matt Barkley struggled. Foles threw an interception and Barkley was only 8-for-16 with a touchdown pass and interception. Foles has held onto the ball too long and has been indecisive.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is exact opposite of what we heard this offseason when some speculated that Nick Foles was in the lead. This QB competition should last all the way up to training camp. It's important for fantasy owners to monitor because the offense will look different depending on who is under center. If Vick wins then expect more inside/outside zone rushing. If Foles wins then expect the team to have a more traditional offense and use the TEs more.

DEN - RB Ronnie Hillman the starter

Source: The Denver Post - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman has a firm hold on the No. 1 running back position to this point in training camp over RBs Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno. 'How it moves forward — we don't know enough about Montee Ball yet,' head coach John Fox said. 'We know what style he has. I've been very impressed with his football character. And you do find out pretty fast at that position.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hillman has been a standout player every day in training camp while Ball continues to struggle. The Broncos are going to use a RBBC in 2013 with Hillman as their big play back. Ball will be the team's red zone back no matter where he lands on the depth chart because of his nose for the end zone.

SEA - WR Percy Harvin undergoes surgery

Source: Everett Herald - John Boyle

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said WR Percy Harvin (hip) underwent successful hip surgery Thursday, Aug. 1, and hopes Harvin will be able to return at some point this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harvin will rehab in New York for a few weeks before returning to Seattle to continue his recovery. The Seahawks are set to make a Super Bowl run and Harvin may be able to return later in the year as the playoffs approach. That would be a huge boost for the team's passing game.

PHI - More on WR DeSean Jackson

Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Les Bowen

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson (toe) left practice with a minor toe injury Thursday, Aug. 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles already lost WR Jeremy Maclin to a knee injury and they don't need to lose anymore at the position. It's a minor injury but one the team will carefully monitor as they work through training camp.

KC - Coach praises QB Alex Smith

Source: The Kansas City Star - Randy Covitz

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson gave QB Alex Smith high praise, calling him the best quarterback in the NFL. “Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback,” Pederson said. “I think we have the best in the league.”

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pederson is a little off calling Smith the best in the league. Smith isn't even the best QB in his division (Broncos, Peyton Manning). We like seeing the confidence coming out of Kansas City but the team should finish around .500 this year under the guidance of Smith. If he was truly the best in the league they'd win more.

CIN - WR Andrew Hawkins carted off

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Joe Reedy

Cincinnati Bengals WR Andrew Hawkins (ankle) was carted off the field Thursday, Aug. 1, after suffering an ankle injury during practice. Hawkins was unable to put weight on the ankle after the injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We love Young Baby Hawk. Hopefully he's able to get back on the practice field soon. He's competing for the slot WR job in 2013.

TEN - RB Chris Johnson sits out practice

Source: TitansInsider.com - Terry McCormick

Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson (ankle) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 1, because of ankle soreness. Head coach Mike Munchak said he expects Johnson to play in the first preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is a speed back and ankle problems are something that can slow him down. We'll see him get a limited number of snaps in the preseason opener.

WAS - Joshua Morgan leaves practice

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said WR Joshua Morgan (hamstring) left practice early Thursday, Aug. 1, because of a strained hamstring.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Morgan is a strong receiver who can make plays downfield. We've been waiting for Morgan to play up to his potential ever since he came into the league. Injuries have plagued him during his entire career. No word on how severe this injury is but it's just another reminder that Morgan is injury prone.

CIN - QB Andy Dalton remains streaky

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton had a great rhythm in the first two days of training camp but forced throws into coverage over the next few practices. 'The way he's commanded the offense, he knows it’s his team now,' WR A.J. Green said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are some who question whether or not Dalton is the QB to get them over the top in the playoffs. The team is going to leave no stone unturned and that's why they continued to add quality weapons around him this offseason. Rookies Giovani Bernard (RB) and Tyler Eifert (TE) should help make this offense even more dangerous and free up some coverage for superstar WR A.J. Green.

NYJ - Coach happy with QB Mark Sanchez's work Thursday

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Jane McManus

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said QB Mark Sanchez performed well during practice Thursday, Aug. 1. 'I thought Mark did a great job, especially on the gotta-have-its. After the two minute when we did the gotta-have-its, he made a great throw. Now the defense helped him out when they never had the personnel on the field. If you play with nine on the field, bad things happen,' Ryan said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanchez is battling rookie Geno Smith for the starting job. Reports from training camp say that Smith is standing out more than Sanchez. This a competition that should last throughout most of the preseason.

SD - WR Vincent Brown misses practice

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic

San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Brown (hamstring) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 1, but appeared to running better on a side field.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopefully Brown can get back on the field ASAP. He's a crisp route runner with incredible hands but has durability concerns after missing all of 2012 with an ankle injury. Brown should be a favorite target of QB Philip Rivers in 2013.

NYG - WR Hakeem Nicks considered day-to-day

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Kieran Darcy

New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (groin) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 1, but head coach Tom Coughlin said he believes Nicks is day-to-day.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a regular story with Nicks. He's incredibly gifted but also gets banged up a lot. Coughlin said he is frustrated that Nicks is missing time but believes he will be back as soon as possible.

JAX - Cutting down on RB Denard Robinson's workload

Source: The Associated Press

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been using RB Denard Robinson at running back, kick returner and in the wildcat formation during training camp because they thought they had him do too much during offseason workouts. Robinson lined up at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, punt returner and kick returner during offseason workouts but he was struggling with ball security during the workouts.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jaguars had to find a way to use Robinson and that's why they experimented with him during the offseason. His listed as OW (Offensive Weapon) because he'll be lining up all over the field as a rookie. It's a smart move for the Jaguars as Robinson is dangerous in the open field and needs the ball in his hands.

NE - WR Julian Edelman activated from PUP list

Source: ESPNBoston.com - Field Yates

The New England Patriots have activated WR Julian Edelman (foot) from the Physically Unable to Perform list. Edelman is participating in practice Thursday, Aug. 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to take note. Edelman is back in action for the first time since week 13 of last year. He's competing for the WR2 spot with rookies like Aaron Dobson (Marshall), Josh Boyce (TCU), and Kenbrell Thompkins (Cincinnati). Edelman is one of the few remaining targets in New England that has established chemistry with Tom Brady.

BUF - Stevie Johnson working in slot

Source: The Buffalo News - Mark Gaughan

Buffalo Bills WR Stevie Johnson has worked primarily in the slot in the first week of camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is working in the slot where he can be put in motion and get a clean release off the line of scrimmage. The Bills made huge upgrades to their WR corps this offseason when they drafted Robert Woods (USC) and Marquise Goodwin (Texas). Both rookie should help boost the passing game along with second-year WR T.J. Graham.

BAL - Bryant McKinnie says was 10 pounds overweight

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson

Baltimore Ravens OT Bryant McKinnie said his target weight for training camp was 346 pounds, but he reported for camp around 10 pounds overweight.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You know it's August when McKinnie is overweight. He'll get worked into shape over the next month.

CIN - OC impressed with TE Tyler Eifert

Source: The Associated Press

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said he has been impressed with how TE Tyler Eifert has looked during training camp. 'He's running routes and catching the ball. He's very natural at what he does. He can beat man coverage no problem. He can beat zones. He's got a great feel for the game,' Gruden said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're impressed with Eifert. He was our favorite rookie TE coming out in the draft this year. Eifert has a solid frame and is tough in a crowd. He's athletic enough to challenge the deep seam and does a good job of gaining position. Eifert is a weapon we expect the Bengals to gameplan around. If he plays up to his potential then it will help open up coverage for superstar WR A.J. Green.

MIA - WR Mike Wallace hopes to play in preseason game

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace (groin) said he has been dealing with a groin injury but hopes to play in the Hall of Fame Game Sunday, Aug. 4. He said he does not believe the injury is serious.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no need to push it this early in the preseason. It would be nice to see Wallace for just a bit with the first-team offense. Wallace has reportedly been having trouble establishing chemistry with QB Ryan Tannehill. That needs improvement before we start the regular season.

WAS - RB Roy Helu ahead in competition for No. 2 RB job

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu appears to be the leading candidate for the No. 2 running back job. The team has been using him in standard running plays, option pitches and as a receiver out of the backfield because they want to take advantage of his speed and catching ability.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Helu is a good all-purpose back who can be effective as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. He's competing with rookie Chris Thompson to be the primary backup behind Alfred Morris. If Helu is healthy he could give the team a nice change of pace when Morris needs a breather.

WAS - Robert Griffin struggles Wednesday

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (knee) completed only seven of 14 passes in seven-on-seven drills during practice Wednesday, July 31. He threw two interceptions and had three passes dropped. He did not appear to plant his back leg firmly as in previous days, but it is not known if it was because of the rain or another reason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rain, rain, go away is what Redskins fans are saying. It's an interesting note but one we'll let slide for now. Let's see what Griffin looks like when it's not raining and he can plant his leg better when throwing.

NYJ - Coach hopes RB Chris Ivory will return soon

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he hopes RB Chris Ivory (hamstring) will return to the practice field soon. 'I hope to get him out there soon... I thought it would be progressing a little bit better than it has,' Ryan said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets would be wise to not rush Ivory back. He's a big back who runs with swiftness and elusiveness in the open field. However, Ivory has always come with durability concerns as the injury bug has bothered him during his entire pro career. Hamstring injuries can linger if not given enough time to heal.

ARI - Ryan Williams not practicing

Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB Ryan Williams (knee) is not participating in practice Thursday, Aug. 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams has talent but we hardly get to see it because he's hurt most of the time. This is a make or break year for Williams with the Cardinals. They drafted Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington this year and could move on from Williams if he doesn't get healthy and impress in camp.

MIN - WR Cordarrelle Patterson looks to be No. 4

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Mark Craig

Minnesota Vikings WR Cordarrelle Patterson appears to be the team's fourth receiver right now.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Patterson has the ability to be a dominant pro and should move up the depth chart as camp goes along. The team selected him in the first-round of the 2013 NFL draft because of his size/speed combination. Patterson does a good job with his run after the catch ability and has the speed to pull away from defenders.

PIT - TE Heath Miller not expected back soon

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Mark Kaboly

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Heath Miller (knee) isn't expected to be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list for a few weeks. He has been running while dragging a weight behind him on a side field.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller may not be ready for the start of the regular season. There's a chance he could begin the regular season on the PUP list which would force him to miss the first six weeks of the year. Matt Spaeth and David Paulson have been splitting first-team reps in camp.

JAX - WR Justin Blackmon's rehab accelerates

Source: The Associated Press - Mark Long

The Jacksonville Jaguars have sped up WR Justin Blackmon's (groin) rehab, and he could be practicing soon.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no need to rush Blackmon back before he's ready. He'll serve a four game suspension to begin the season and the team doesn't want to aggravate the injury. He may begin practicing soon but we're sure they'll ease him back into action.

CIN - OLB James Harrison exceeding expectations

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Cincinnati Bengals LB James Harrison is exceeding expectations as he transitions from an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense to Cincinnati's 4-3 defense. 'He's exceeded my expectations, to be honest with you. Typically, that transition is a little more difficult. Shoot, we're finding a lot of things for him to do. The coverage part was what I was a little worried about. But he's doing things really well. We'll find a lot of ways to use him in all kinds of different packages,' defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harrison may have more left in the tank than some think. Most of the time the Steelers do a good job of letting veterans go before their play declines drastically (Jason Gildon, Levon Kirkland). However, they have had a few misses in that category before (Rod Woodson, Chad Brown). Harrison may be one of those players who leave Pittsburgh but still put up quality numbers.

Updating an earlier report, San Francisco 49ers MLB Patrick Willis (hand) has a slight fracture in his right hand.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team will wisely proceed with caution, but he'll be ready for the regular season. Willis is one tough cookie and should be back to full strength before you know it.
