GB - RB Johnathan Franklin appears to be the guy

Source: NFL Network - Jamie Dukes

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy appears to be a little heavy during training camp, and RB Johnathan Franklin appears to be have a chance to win the starting running back job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Packers have a nice problem. Lacy is a banger between the tackles with size and a wicked spin move. Franklin is a good all-around RB who runs bigger than his size. This competition should continue through camp. Our very own Cecil Lammey compared Franklin to a smaller version of Frank Gore when he watched him from the sidelines during the week of practice for the Senior Bowl earlier this year.

NYJ - Could use RB by committee

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

The New York Jets could use a running-back-by-committee approach this season with RB Chris Ivory being the lead runner. The team is hoping Ivory will be able to handle 15 carries a game. RB Bilal Powell is expected to be the No. 2 running back and is the leading candidate for the third-down back role.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's the best move for the Jets given Ivory's injury history. Powell is a plodding RB and has a boring playing style that lacks elusiveness and creativity. Nobody knows when backup RB Mike Goodson will show up to practice. He's currently missing training camp due to an undisclosed reason.

IND - WR T.Y. Hilton moving around

Source: Terre Haute Tribune-Star - George Bremer

Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton is battling WR Darrius Heyward-Bey for the No. 2 receiver spot in training camp. Offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton has used Hilton all over the field, lining up outside on the left and right, and also in the slot. Hilton is also expected to serve as the team's primary punt returner.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We prefer Hilton in this competition. He's got the speed to get on top of the defense in a hurry and showed good chemistry with QB Andrew Luck last year. Heyward-Bey is big and fast but has struggled (and is continuing to struggle) with drops during his pro career.

JAX - QB Blaine Gabbert limited

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert (ankle) was limited to individual drills during practice Wednesday, July 31. Gabbert said he expects to fully practice Thursday, Aug. 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gabbert needs to stay healthy and get on the field if he wants to win the starting job. He's competing with veteran Chad Henne and can't afford to miss much time. Gabbert is in a make or break season. He needs to prove he can be the franchise QB the team envisioned when they selected him in the first-round of the 2011 NFL draft.

CHI - WR Brandon Marshall returns

Source: Chicago Tribune - Brad Biggs

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall (hip) returned to practice Wednesday, July 31.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall has had hip problems during his entire pro career. The team will continue to manage his practice time and give him some days off if need be.

SF - WR Michael Crabtree back for the holidays?

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') might be looking for a late November or early December return, if he is able to come back and play this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team is hopeful they can get Crabtree back before a playoff run. Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be and there's a chance we could see Crabtree before the end of the season. However, just because he returns it doesn't mean he'll instantly look like his old self.

PIT - Le'Veon bell stands out

Source: College2Pro.com - Bo Marchionte

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell was the star of training camp practice Wednesday, July 31, and he broke off a long run.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell is looking to be the team's starting RB this year. He's considered the favorite to win the job over Isaac Redman or Jonathan Dwyer. Bell is a big back who is tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam. With Bell leading the way we could see the Steelers emphasize the ground game more in 2013. Since the start of the 2008 season, the Steelers’ percentage of designed rush plays has declined from a high of 46.4% of their plays in 2010 to 39.6% in 2012. The Steelers have also seen a huge decline in their ability to run between the tackles. They rushed for 3.5 yards between the tackles last season, one full yard less than 2011.

BUF - QB EJ Manuel works with first team

Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel worked with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, July 31, after spending most of his time with the second unit to begin training camp. QB Kevin Kolb led the first unit for the final two 11-on-11 periods, however.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see this rotation at QB continue for the Bills. Manuel has the athleticism and arm strength edge over Kolb. However, Kolb is the seasoned veteran and his experience could put him at the top of the depth chart to begin the season. Even if Kolb is the week one starter we should see Manuel take over at some point during the year.

NO - Heated battle for No. 2 QB job

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune - Terrance Harris

New Orleans Saints QBs Luke McCown and Seneca Wallace are getting equal reps with the second-team offense, as they battle for the primary backup job behind starting QB Drew Brees.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCown is at camp with the Saints for the second consecutive year which could make him the slight favorite in this competition. Wallace was out of football last year and has been slowed recently by a groin injury. Brees has been incredibly durable since joining the Saints in 2006 and has only missed one game during his time in New Orleans.

DEN - RB Ronnie Hillman has improved blocking

Source: The Denver Post - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman has improved his pass-protection skills this season, which hurt his case for playing time last season. He still has a firm grasp on the No. 1 running back post.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You've got to protect Peyton Manning if you want to get on the field for the Broncos. Hillman is standing out as the best RB on the roster, showing better decisiveness than he did as a rookie. He's added 20 pounds of muscle this offseason working with superstar trainer Travelle Gaines yet Hillman has retained his quickness and speed. Rookie Montee Ball has struggled as a runner and pass blocker and may not win the starting job in camp.

DET - TE Brandon Pettigrew looking to improve game

Source: MLive.com - Justin Rogers

Detroit Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew said he changed his diet and worked out this offseason to lose some weight and get a more refined technique. 'Brandon looks as good as I've ever seen him physically,' head coach Jim Schwartz said. 'He's very accountable. Like all our players, they work hard to identify their weaknesses and try to work to correct those.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He needs to cut down on the drops in 2013. Pettigrew has also been focusing on keeping his eyes on the ball and looking passes in.

NYJ - Coach wants to use QB Geno Smith on read-option

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he would like to use QB Geno Smith on read-option plays because he believes Smith can be a weapon on offense. Ryan is intrigued by Smith's running ability.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This may not be the best idea. Smith is incredibly athletic but was a pocket passer in college at West Virginia. He only had 342 rushing yards in four seasons with the Mountaineers.

CLE - GM happy with QB Brandon Weeden's progress

Source: Medina County Gazette - Scott Petrak

Cleveland Browns general manager Michael Lombardi said he has been happy with QB Brandon Weeden's work during offseason workouts and training camp. 'I think everybody that practices football has really good days and they have some bad days and I think everything's a learning experience and I think he clearly has proven in the offseason that he's gotten better at everything they've asked him to do,' Lombardi said. 'So every day is about getting better and I think that's what a lot of players are doing.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lombardi used to be on NFL Network and he was not a fan of the Weeden pick during his time in the media. It's a good sign for Weeden if he's beginning to impress Lombardi this offseason. New OC Norv Turner's offense should be very Weeden friendly and take advantage of what the second-year QB does best.

JAX - WR Justin Blackmon making progress

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said WR Justin Blackmon (groin) is making progress in his rehab from groin surgery.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Blackmon is suspended for the first four games of the regular season so the Jaguars have no need to rush him back before he's ready. They'll take it easy on Blackmon until his groin is properly healed.

IND - Pass-catch duo building rapport

Source: Terre Haute Tribune-Star - George Bremer

Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton has developed quite the rapport with QB Andrew Luck. The duo spent last month working with WR Reggie Wayne in South Florida, as they each look to improve upon their rookie season performances.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hilton is an interesting fit in the new Pep Hamilton offense. Last year in the Bruce Arians system he was a perfect fit because of his downfield speed and ability to track deep passes. The Hamilton system is more about short/underneath passes and methodically working down the field. We'll see if this chemistry helps Hilton continue to shine in 2013.

BUF - TE Scott Chandler still not working in drills

Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills TE Scott Chandler (knee) continues to be held out of team drills, as he recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No real concern here. Bills coach Doug Marrone said the team has built in rest days for Chandler, who had surgery in January. Without Chandler on the field we'll see more from rookie Chris Gragg and veteran Lee Smith.

SEA - WR Sidney Rice in Switzerland for treatment

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Danny O'Neil

Seattle Seahawks WR Sidney Rice (knee) is in Switzerland for what head coach Pete Carroll says is a non-surgical procedure on his knee. 'When he comes back, he'll go right back on the field,' Carroll said Tuesday, July 30. 'So he didn't get hurt.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rice should return stateside here in the near future. The team not only expects him to be ready for the regular season but he's expected to be ready for the preseason.

TEN - QB Jake Locker runs some pistol offense

Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker ran the pistol offense late in practice Tuesday, July 30. Locker reportedly had his best practice of the year thus far and ran the pistol formation well.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Locker has the athleticism to run the pistol offense so it makes sense for the team to throw that into the mix. It's a make or break year for Locker as he needs to prove that he can stay healthy and be the franchise QB the team envisioned when they selected him in the first-round of the 2011 NFL draft.

CIN - WR Marvin Jones, WR Mohamed Sanu looking good

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Cincinnati Bengals WR Mohamed Sanu (foot) appears to be over a foot injury which required season-ending surgery last November. WR Marvin Jones has also impressed, showing good separation and speed in training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. We like both of these young receivers and appreciate the upside they bring to the field. Sanu can be a reliable possession receiver with the size to be a red zone target. Jones has the ball tracking ability to stretch the field and be a deep threat.

CIN - Not ready to reduce role of RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden hinted before training camp that there might be an equal distribution of carries between RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard, but that is unlikely to happen. The team has been impressive by Bernard, but they're not ready to reduce Green-Ellis' role.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see the team use both backs this season but the lead back could be Bernard. He's simply more explosive and a better big play option than Green-Ellis.

CIN - Wondering if QB Andy Dalton is franchise QB

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton has thrown for 47 touchdown passes in 32 career games, with only Hall of Famer QB Dan Marino (68) and Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning (52) throwing for more in their first two NFL seasons. Still, he is 0-2 in the playoffs, and there are doubts whether Dalton can take the team to the next level.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dalton was compared to former Jets/Dolphins QB Chad Pennington because of his lack of arm strength and football intelligence. We'll see if added weapons to the offense like RB Giovani Bernard and TE Tyler Eifert will help Dalton elevate his game in 2013.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles a favorite target

Source: The Associated Press

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has been a favorite target of QB Alex Smith in the passing game. He has also lined up as a wide receiver at times.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Charles is going to be the centerpiece of the team's offense, as he should. He's a top 5 fantasy RB and should be among the first picks off the board in every fantasy draft.

CHI - Jermon Bushrod still in boot

Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears OT Jermon Bushrod (calf) remains in a walking boot and is out Wednesday, July 31.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bushrod was a key free agent addition for the Bears this offseason. They won't rush him back until he's ready. Bushrod will protect QB Jay Cutler's blind side as their starting left tackle in 2013.

NE - WR Aaron Dobson fine

Source: The Boston Globe - Ben Volin

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots WR Aaron Dobson (leg) just took a cleat to the leg and is fine. He should return to practice Thursday, Aug. 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Patriots here. Dobson is competing to be in the starting lineup opposite Danny Amendola. He's fast but has build up speed and is not going to break ankles in the open field. Coming out of Marshall some in the scouting community compared him to Sidney Rice (Seahawks).

BUF - DE Mario Williams not talking about injury

Source: The Buffalo News - Tim Graham

Buffalo Bills DE Mario Williams (foot) would not discuss anything about how he suffered his foot injury or when he suffered the injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bills coach Doug Marrone said Williams is dealing with a left foot injury and is considered day-to-day. We may not see much from Williams during the preseason as the team gets him ready for week one of the regular season.

DEN - Believe CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will play Week 1

Source: The Denver Post - Caitlin Swieca

Updating previous reports, the Denver Broncos do not have a timetable for CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie's (ankle) return but are encouraged that he will be ready for the start of the regular season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting DRC on the field near full strength is important for the Broncos. He's set to start on the outside opposite Champ Bailey. Rodgers-Cromartie had been a standout player in practice for the Broncos.

SEA - O'Brien Schofield to work at OLB

Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Eric D. Williams

Seattle Seahawks LB O'Brien Schofield will initially be used at strongside linebacker, but the team believes he can be versatile. 'He's very active; he's a very versatile football player. He's played outside backer and rushing third down. Again, in that role that we like. You know, all of the things that the Sam and the Will can do. We are really excited to get him on the team. Unfortunately, it took us a couple of years to get him,' head coach Pete Carroll said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Schofield was released by the Cardinals after they signed John Abraham. He's in the perfect spot where he can potentially flourish as a pass rusher. Schofield could help out early on when Bruce Irvin is missing four games due to a suspension.
