DEN - Dan Koppen has torn ACL

Source: The Denver Post - Jeff Legwold

Updating an earlier report, Denver Broncos C Dan Koppen (knee) has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the season.

The Broncos may be in the market now for a veteran center like Jeff Faine, Eugene Amano, or Jason Brown.

BAL - TE Visanthe Shiancoe signed

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The Baltimore Ravens have signed free-agent TE Visanthe Shiancoe (Patriots) to a one-year deal.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shiancoe is a solid two-way tight end, but he is no threat to be a fantasy factor this year. What he could do is steal enough targets from Ed Dickson with competent play to keep Dickson's upside limited to high TE2 or low TE1 instead of a possible breakout player with Dennis Pitta sidelined for the year. Shiancoe was actually watching Ravens practice with Ozzie Newsome before Pitta's injury, so there was interest there before a need arose.

BAL - TE Dennis Pitta has surgery

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson

Updating an earlier report, Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) underwent surgery to repair a fractured and dislocated hip. Head coach John Harbaugh said he expects Pitta would be able to play in 2014.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harbaugh can say that, but no one will know for certain whether Pitta's career can resume as expected for at least a few weeks as his bone begins to heal and hopefully get past key points where complications can develop.

NYG - WR Hakeem Nicks banged up

Source: Newsday - Tom Rock

New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (groin) has tightness in his groin.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This isn't really what his owners or anyone planning on drafting Nicks wanted to hear, but it sounds like this is minor and insignificant in the big picture. If Nicks has trouble practicing and playing for most of the time between now and the third preseason game, then we might consider moving him down our boards for fear of more injury issues this year.

TB - WR Vincent Jackson seeing time in slot

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Stephen Holder

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson has frequently lined up in the slot in practice. He could be a fixture there in the 2-minute offense.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson would get a cleaner release and a two-way go from the slot that could get him into deep routes more quickly than when he faces a jam or gets steered to the sideline outside. The better question for the Bucs is which wide receiver will line up outside along with Mike Williams when Jackson does move inside?

IND - WR Darrius Heyward-Bey opens camp as No. 2 WR

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Mike Chappell

Indianapolis Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey lined up with the first-team offense during practice Sunday, July 28. WR T.Y. Hilton may be used as the No. 3 receiver.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Colts should be trying to get Hilton on the field more than he did last year as he develops in the second year of his career, but they are also going to run more two tight end sets. Heyward-Bey is a good end of the bench stash, but he has never been a consistent producer or player. Hilton might have inconsistent production early in the season if Heyward-Bey is on the field more than him, but we think eventually he will get back to his more prominent role from last year because he's the best vertical threat on the team.

PHI - WR DeSean Jackson expects to be punt returner

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Zach Berman and Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson said he will be the team's punt returner this season and is looking forward to handling the role. 'I'm very excited about that,' Jackson said. 'Able to go out there once again, help the offense get in great field position and things like that. Something I'm looking forward to.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is great for Jackson in return yardage leagues, but it also could indicate that the team is going to disprortionately lean on him in the pass offense, because if Jackson was seen as indispensable, they might not want to risk his health regularly on punt returns. Jackson's ADP is going to go up in the wake of the loss of Jeremy Maclin, but it might not be warranted.

SF - WR Kyle Williams sitting

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers WR Kyle Williams (hamstring) is sitting Sunday, July 28, after tweaking his hamstring the previous day.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams could get himself in the thick of the battle to start opposite Anquan Boldin because he is the most experienced in the 49ers offense. Williams has flashed in the past, but he has to stay on the field to impress enough to win the job - or even be on the roster.

PHI - WR Arrelious Benn's injury not serious

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said WR Arrelious Benn's (knee) knee injury is not considered serious.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benn could be foisted into a larger role as one of better run-blocking wide receivers on the roster, but he has to get back on the practice field to do it. Damaris Johnson and Riley Cooper are probably better knee-jerk (so to speak) pickups in deep dynasty leagues.

PHI - WR David Ball signed

Source: PhiladelphiaEagles.com

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed free-agent WR David Ball (Jets). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ball was coached by Chip Kelly back at New Hampshire in the mid 2000s. He has excellent body control and hands, with a game roughly similar to Lance Moore or Austin Collie. He was apparently signed before Jeremy Maclin's injury, so the team could still acquire another receiver to make up for that loss.

NYG - GM puts team on notice

Source: The Associated Press

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese is not satisfied with his team making the postseason only once in the last four years, and he put his team on notice Saturday, July 27. 'Close is not good enough,' he said. 'You need consistency. At times last year we looked like a good football team, and at times we looked like a bad football team. We want to put everyone on notice that is not our standard. Being to the playoffs one time in four years is below our standards.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What Reese is overlooking here is that the Giants barely eked into the playoffs in both of the Super Bowl seasons. Their best regular season was ended by a loss to the rival Eagles in the playoff opener. While consistent excellence is a good goal. The Giants seem to have up and down in their DNA - except when they are on the march to a Super Bowl.

NYJ - GM will have say in starting QB competition

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets general manager John Idzik said he will have a pretty big role in deciding whether QB Mark Sanchez or QB Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback Week 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a competition we'll see shake out in training camp. Sanchez has the edge with his experience and is feeling very confident this offseason. Smith is the more intelligent and athletic rookie who the team is hoping can be their QB of the future. There has been some discussion about the Jets using Smith as a "change of pace" QB if he doesn't win the starting job.

ATL - CB Desmond Trufant working at RCB

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons rookie CB Desmond Trufant is working at right cornerback and nickel back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Trufant is going to be on the spot right away on a team that has to face Cam Newton, Drew Brees, and Josh Freeman six times this year. If he wins a starting job opposite Asante Samuel, he'll be a good candidate to start in IDP leagues.

ATL - DE Osi Umenyiora seeing time at LB

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The Atlanta Falcons have used DE Osi Umenyiora as a standup linebacker at times since training camp began. Umenyiora said he does not know if he will line up at the position during a regular season game but wants to work on it in case he needs to play the position.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is known for mixing up fronts and looks on defense, but Umenyiora might not be the best player to experiment with in that way. The Falcons must have Umenyiora healthy and generating pressure if they are going to repeat as NFC South champs.

DEN - CB Champ Bailey to get time off during camp

Source: The Denver Post - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox said the team will give CB Champ Bailey some time off during training camp because of his age and their belief he will be ready for the start of the season. 'At this point in his career we're going to do what's best, just like we would for all our players. We know Champ is ready to go and will be ready to go. And when he practices, he makes the most of it,' Fox said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bailey gave up some big plays in the playoff loss to the Ravens, but he is still playing at a high level, and the addition of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie adds some speed to the secondary to help Bailey as his starts to fade.
