BAL - TE Dennis Pitta expected to miss season

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating previous reports, Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) is expected to miss the entire 2013 season because of the dislocated hip he suffered Saturday, July 27.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Huge blow for the Ravens offense here. They were already scrambling to find targets since they traded away WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) earlier this year. Ed Dickson now slides into the starting role for the Ravens. He's an athletic move TE but lacks the strong hands that Pitta has. We'll see if the team makes a move at the position to add more depth. They had free agent TE Visanthe Shiancoe in for a tryout on Friday.

PHI - Team Confirms WR Jeremy Maclin ACL injury

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The Philadelphia Eagles confirmed reports that WR Jeremy Maclin (knee) tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tough break for Maclin and the Eagles. Without Maclin in the lineup we'd see more from the TE position in Philadelphia and likely some shift to the running game. Riley Cooper would also get a bump here.

SEA - Coach says WR Percy Harvin may have several options

Source: Sports Radio KJR - Curtis Crabtree

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said WR Percy Harvin (hip) could have several options to consider regarding his hip injury depending on what the second opinion reveals. 'We are just going to have to wait and see and it's everything that he might be to come back and be ready to go,' Carroll said. 'There may be some procedures that are needed to take place. There are a number of different ways that that could happen in the lengths of the recovery and what has to take place. So it's uncertain right now.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carroll said Harvin will not necessarily miss the entire season if he does need surgery. Fantasy owners need to watch this situation closely as we gather more information. Harvin could be back by the fantasy playoffs.

HOU - RB Arian Foster wants to be careful with injury

Source: Houston Chronicle - Tania Ganguli

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (calf) said he does not have a timetable for when he will be able to begin practicing because he does not want to rush back from the injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's wise to be cautious with the veteran runner. He had durability issues in college and the team needs him to be the centerpiece of their offense once again in 2013. Foster is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list but is expected to come off the list at some point during training camp.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger says knee is fine

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (knee) said his right knee is fine even though head coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger was dealing with a little discomfort in the knee.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Roethlisberger is one tough QB. The team will be cautious with this knee while it's discomforting the veteran.

SD - WR Vincent Brown misses practice

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Brown (hamstring) did not participate in practice Saturday, July 27, because of a hamstring injury. The team believes the injury is minor.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is coming back from an ankle injury that cost him the entire 2012 season. The team doesn't want him to miss any more time with injury and will monitor Brown's hamstring closely.

PIT - TE Heath Miller not 100 percent

Source: USAToday.com - Jim Corbett

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Heath Miller (knee) said his right anterior cruciate ligament is a work in progress.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zero surprise here. Miller injured his ACL, MCL, and PCL in week 16 last year and is still on the road to recovery. There's a chance he could begin the regular season on the PUP list which would force him to miss the first six weeks of the season. We'll see more from Matt Spaeth and David Paulson while Miller is out.

BAL - Remain in talks with RB Vonta Leach

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

The Baltimore Ravens remain in contract talks with free-agent FB Vonta Leach, and they remain the front runners to re-sign him.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Going back to the Ravens may be the best bet for Leach. The Dolphins still might have interest in the veteran fullback too. Leach is a devastating lead blocker and will improve any ground game he's added to.

BUF - RB C.J. Spiller could see 30 touches

Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller could see 30 touches a game in head coach Doug Marrone's offense. Marrone's offense at Syracuse ran the ball around 40 times a game, and if Spiller remains healthy, he could see a heavy workload.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We say 'why not?' Spiller is a big play weapon who can score anytime he touches the ball. Giving him the rock more increases the chances of production for the Bills offense. Some are concerned about Spiller wearing down but the Bills have Fred Jackson to give him a breather during games if need be.

BUF - QB Kevin Kolb, QB EJ Manuel to split reps

Source: NFL.com

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said QB Kevin Kolb and EJ Manuel will split reps with the first-team offense once training camp begins.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a QB competition we could see last through training camp. Kolb has the experience edge but Manuel is more athletic and has a stronger arm. Even if Kolb wins the job to start the season we should see Manuel eventually. He's the team's QB of the future and has franchise QB upside.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson unlikely to play much in preseason

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said RB Adrian Peterson will receive some reps during preseason games but likely will not see a lot of playing time during the preseason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Peterson is wanting a 2,500 yard season in 2013 and doesn't need every rep in the preseason.

KC - WR Dexter McCluster to finally take off?

Source: The Kansas City Star - Adam Teicher

When Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was with the Philadelphia Eagles, he was intrigued by WR Dexter McCluster during the 2010 NFL Draft. When Reid was hired in January, he immediately began making plans for McCluster. 'He gives you a little flexibility,' Reid said. 'You can move him around a little. We'll use him here or there. I don't know where he couldn't line up, to be honest, as far as skill positions go. He's got that many tools in the belt.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCluster has always been a player without a position in the NFL. He's versatile and can play many positions but the Chiefs haven't found the right way to get the most out of him. That could change with Reid in charge. The Chiefs have no proven weapons in the receiving corps behind WR Dwayne Bowe. McCluster could emerge from the pack to provide QB Alex Smith with a reliable target.

KC - QB Alex Smith shows well in first practice

Source: The Kansas City Star - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith connected with WR Dexter McCluster on a deep pass down the middle that was hauled in for a touchdown Friday, July 26, on the first play at training camp. More importantly than the big plays, head coach Andy Reid likes consistency, and Smith went several plays into practice before throwing his first incompletion. 'There weren't a lot of balls on the ground, and it looked like the defense had people covered,' Reid said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Chiefs here. Smith will lead the way as the team hopes for a bounce back year in 2013. We'll see if he can make the most of the weapons around him like WR Dwayne Bowe and RB Jamaal Charles. Reid has a pass happy system and Smith should have plenty of opportunity to showcase his stuff in 2013.

SD - ILB Jonas Mouton waived/injured

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Brian McIntyre

The San Diego Chargers have waived injured LB Jonas Mouton (knee). He will go on Injured Reserve if he is not claimed off waivers.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This will be the second season Mouton has missed in the last two years. He was a second-round pick by the Chargers in 2011 but missed his rookie season with a shoulder injury. Mouton only saw the field for five snaps in 2012. It's another blow to the Chargers' LB corps as they lost Melvin Ingram (knee) earlier this offseason.

CLE - Ryan Miller suffered concussion

Source: NFL.com

Updating previous reports, Cleveland Browns OG Ryan Miller (concussion) has been diagnosed with a concussion. He is resting comfortably and likely will be released from the hospital Saturday, July 27.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller won't be able to return to the field until he passes the NFL's protocol.

DAL - QB Tony Romo wants to play in preseason game

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) wants to play in the Hall of Fame game even if it is only for a few snaps.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see Romo in for a drive or so. He's coming back from offseason surgery to remove a cyst from his back. Once Romo is done it will be the Kyle Orton show.

BUF - WR Brad Smith restructures

Source: Scout.com - Aaron Wilson

Buffalo Bills WR Brad Smith signed a renegotiated contract Friday, July 26. No financial terms were made available.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Taking a pay cut should help Smith stay on the final roster. It's no guarantee though and he's still on the roster bubble as the Bills have a strong group of young WRs behind Stevie Johnson.

KC - RB Knile Davis working on returns

Source: The Kansas City Star - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs RB Knile Davis never returned a kick in a game during his time at the University of Arkansas, but the team is hoping he can be turned into a kickoff return specialist during training camp and the preseason. Davis dropped a kickoff in practice Friday, July 26, and he was known as a fumbled in college. 'We'll get that fixed,' head coach Andy Reid said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis was one of the most curious picks in the 2013 NFL draft. He never returned a kick in college and is a straight line speed back with little wiggle in the open field. He reminds us of a poor man's Darren McFadden (Raiders) with the same injury concerns.

NYG - DE Jason Pierre-Paul unsure about Week 1 status

Source: New York Post - Paul Schwartz

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back) said he is not sure if he will be ready for the start of the regular season because of his offseason back surgery. He said his back is at around 75 percent at this point.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants need JPP back on the field in a big way. The team is going to have a weaker pass rush without him. We'll see Mathias Kiwanuka in the lineup so long as JPP is out.

DET - DT Nick Fairley slims down

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has been impressive by the weight loss of DT Nick Fairley during the offseason. 'He's really impressive from where he left here at the end of minicamp to his report. You know people make TV shows about Extreme Makeover and stuff like that and I like where he is right now. He's worked very hard in five weeks or six weeks - whatever it was where he was gone and reported in good shape,' Schwartz said Friday, July 26. 'His weight was done and he just needs to stay on that track.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Fairley here. We'll see if he's matured on and off the field so he can finally start playing up to his All-Pro potential in 2013.
