Matthew Berry, The Talented Mr. Roto, celebrates every aspect of fantasy sports in his new book FANTASY LIFE. Brilliant trash talk. Unbelievable trophies. Insane draft day locations. Shake-you-head-in-disbelief punishments. Ingenious attempts at cheating. And surprisingly uplifting stories that remind us why we play these games in the first place.

Between tales of love and hate, birth and death, tattoos and furry animal costumes, the White House Situation Room and a 126-pound golden pelican, Berry also chronicles his own journey from a fourteen-year-old fantasy player to the face of fantasy sports for the largest sports media company in the world.

"Football can be broken down into X's and O's, but at the end of the day, we're all after drama, human interest, and a great story. Matthew Berry's Fantasy Life is a great story. I know sports can make a difference in people's lives; Matthew Berry has shown that fantasy sports can, too." Ron "Jaws" Jaworski, ESPN NFL Analyst

DEN - Confident OLB Von Miller will not be suspended

Source: USAToday.com - Lindsay H. Jones

The Denver Broncos are confident that LB Von Miller will not be suspended four games for violating the NFL's drug policy because he did not fail any tests, according to a person familiar with the situation.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll take this with a grain of salt. Miller might have "failed" a test by providing a sample that did not comply with requirements, such as Keenan Allen's "red flagged" test for having suspiciously high levels of water in his system. Players have successfully had suspensions reduced or even overturned, so we still shouldn't assume that Miller is going to miss four games, but we shouldn't assume that he won't on the basis on this one report.

CIN - WR A.J. Green likely to miss practice time

Source: The Associated Press

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (knee) will likely miss practice this entire weekend as he recovers from a bruised knee. 'At this point, I don't see out in the future that being very long. But we'll take our time with it and let him get right. He'll be fine, hopefully very quickly,' head coach Marvin Lewis said. Green had a wrap on his left knee Friday, July 26.

The upside of big-name players having injury scares is that they get to rest and not risk injuries in camp for a few days after everyone catches their breath.

SEA - WR Percy Harvin dealing with long rehab if surgery needed

Source: ESPN.com - Mike Sando

Seattle Seahawks WR Percy Harvin (hip) would be facing a 10- to 16-week rehab if he needs surgery on a possible tear in his labrum. The recovery time likely would be more if bone resurfacing is involved in the surgery. The team still does not know if Harvin will need surgery to repair the injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is in line with what our Dr. Jene Bramel projected yesterday. The good news is that Harvin would be back for at least the fantasy playoffs, if not the entire second half of the season. Harvin's makeup may encourage him to play through the injury, so taking him off of your board before we know the outcome of this situation is an overreaction.

SEA - Hoping WR Percy Harvin will not need surgery

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

The Seattle Seahawks are hoping WR Percy Harvin (hip) will not need surgery on his injured hip. Harvin is scheduled to undergo an MRI and receive a second opinion next week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harvin owners shouldn't despair just yet. Osi Umenyiora and Brandon Marshall have both played well through hip injuries in recent years, and if Harvin can play through this one, he will, and likely do it well.

JAX - RB Maurice Jones-Drew able to practice

Source: The Associated Press

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) participated in practice Friday, July 26, and did not have any problems with his surgically repaired foot. He said he feels good but knows he has to get to the point where he can carry the ball 20 to 25 times. Jones-Drew received about 12 repetitions during practice. Head coach Gus Bradley said the team will monitor his reps but want to see him cut and catch some passes during practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a breath of fresh air considering the increasingly uncertain bad news we are getting about Santonio Holmes coming back from his lis franc injury. Jones-Drew remains a boom/bust RB2 choice in the late second/early third round, whose ADP could move higher into the second round with more positive news out of camp.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger dealing with discomfort

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said QB Ben Roethlisberger (knee) is dealing with some discomfort in his knee, but it is not considered a setback.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the second year of Todd Haley as offensive coordinator, so Roethlisberger can miss some time without too many repercussions. Still, developing chemistry with third-round pick Markus Wheaton would be beneficial. Roethlisberger will likely play all of this year banged up, just as he has for most of his career.

HOU - RB Arian Foster expected to practice soon

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Wilkening

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said he believes RB Arian Foster (calf) will be able to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list in the near future. Kubiak said he was surprised that Foster was not ready to practice but indicated the training staff believes they need to work with Foster for a few days to get into a routine.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This isn't ideal, but Foster has earned the benefit of the doubt from us until there are bigger red flags around his injury. Our Dr. Jene Bramel says to not get worried unless this calf injury sidelines Foster through the third preseason game.

STL - May use committee at RB

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said the team may have a revolving door at running back this season, headed by RB Daryl Richardson. 'I've usually had a guy, but that's what the competition is about, and that's what camp's for and preseason games are for,' Fisher said. 'It's not going to be out of the question that we don't play two or three of them quite a bit. We may not end up with a 'bell cow' like we've had last year in (Jackson) and previous years, and just let them all play.' RBs Isaiah Pead and Zac Stacy will compete for touches with Richardson.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fisher is stating the obvious here. None of these backs are built like a 300-carry workhorse and that offense seems to be designed for a spread passing game, not a power running game. The best answer to which Rams running back to draft this year might be "none of the above".

SD - RB Ryan Mathews feels he can be elite

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Matt Calkins

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews heads into his fourth season, and he understands he has been an 'average back' in his first three years. However, he dropped about 10 pounds from his weight last season, and enters training camp at 220 pounds. He is healthy and has big expectations for himself. 'I think I can be a top-five back,' Mathews said, 'and be up with the best of them. I just have to be consistent. That's the main thing, to be consistent with my play.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Confidence is an important thing for a running back, and something Mathews hasn't always possessed, but the odds are still against him this year. The Chargers offensive line is still probably the worst in the NFL, and Danny Woodhead is much better suited for playing on a team that will behind or having to open up the offense to stay in games. Mathews is not a good value at his current ADP.

NE - RB LeGarrette Blount runs with authority

Source: ESPNBoston.com - Field Yates

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount reportedly looked energized and quicker than in offseason work on the first day of camp Friday, July 26.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots could choose to carry four backs into the regular season if both Blount and Brandon Bolden continue to impress. New England would then be more encouraged to emphasize the run in their uptempo offense. Blount will need some injuries ahead of him to have fantasy value, but if he can make this roster, he'll have great upside if and when his number is called as a starter in place of an injured Stevan Ridley.

SF - WR Mario Manningham a month away

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers WR Mario Manningham (knee) is roughly a month away from returning to action on the field, and the competition behind WR Anquan Boldin will be furious. WRs Kyle Williams, Ricardo Lockette, A.J. Jenkins, Quinton Patton and Marlon Moore will be looking to step up in the absence of WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles').

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers could choose to platoon wide receivers in this role, with Lockette being the fastest, Patton the best after the catch, Williams the most experienced, and Jenkins the biggest investment. Even if one receiver rules the role, they will likely be the third option at best in a run-heavy offense, and that's only until Manningham is ready to resume his role.

PHI - QB Michael Vick takes first-team reps

Source: ESPN.com

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick took snaps with the first team Friday, July 26, while QB Nick Foles opened with the second team and QB Matt Barkley practiced with the third team. However, Foles eventually saw some time with the first team. Head coach Chip Kelly said Vick and Foles will split first-team repetitions at the start of training camp, and the team will have a starter named by the time they begin game planning for Week 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a true competition that will be decided on the practice and preseason field. Foles was favored by more than one beat writer coming out of OTAs. The winner will determine how much QB running and quick passing there is in the offense. Foles would be better for the receivers and tight ends, while Vick would give the Eagles a viable fantasy quarterback.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith sharp

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez is working exclusively with the first-team offense, but rookie QB Geno Smith looks sharp with the second team.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is an improvement from OTAs, when Smith reportedly had trouble with even simple tasks like taking a snap from center. Smith should be able to start once he brings the talent that made him so productive at West Virginia to the surface, but the Jets won't hand him the job until he does.

NE - WR Aaron Dobson works with starters

Source: The Boston Globe - Jeff Pini

New England Patriots WR Aaron Dobson worked with the first-team offense during practice Friday, July 26. Dobson saw time as the slot receiver as well as the outside receiver during practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dobson had a few drops according to reports, but he should be given first shot at the "X" wide receiver job.

NYJ - WR Braylon Edwards praises QB Geno Smith

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Braylon Edwards has been extremely impressed with rookie QB Geno Smith in the first few days of training camp. 'It's going to be a battle,' Edwards said of the Jets' quarterback competition. 'Mark can't make mistakes like he has in the past. Things have to be legit with Mark for him to be the starter because he has a legit guy knocking at the back door.' Smith showed a big arm during practice Friday, July 26.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is something to keep in mind if Smith and Edwards can win jobs out of training camp. The Jets have no clear cut #1 receiver or quarterback right now, so if these two have a connection, it could create some marginal fantasy value in the limp Jets offense.

HOU - May meet with WR Laurent Robinson

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

The Houston Texans may consider meeting with free-agent WR Laurent Robinson (Jaguars) at some point.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinsons is getting tryouts and interest, and should soon be back in the league. After Ryan Swope had to retire before playing a down of NFL football because of concussions, we are rooting for Robinson to be a feel-good story in the new era of concussion awareness in the NFL.

NYJ - WR Santonio Holmes running

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Jane McManus

New York Jets WR Santonio Holmes (foot) has done some running for short stretches, but he hasn't taken part in any cutting. 'Making sure the feet move at the same pace,' Holmes said, 'and no setbacks in the future.' However, doctors are still unsure if Holmes will be able to return this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is your reminder that lis franc injuries can be devastating for a player's long-term outlook. Maurice Jones-Drew is also returning from one this season.

KC - WR Dwayne Bowe not practicing

Source: The Kansas City Star - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe (undisclosed) is not participating in practice Friday, July 26. He is working with trainers on another field.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bowe has a chest virus. Nothing to worry about here.

WAS - TE Fred Davis expects to be limited

Source: The Washington Post - Mark Maske

Washington Redskins TE Fred Davis (Achilles') said he expects to be limited during training camp after returning from a torn Achilles' last season. 'Since we have five tight ends, I think a lot of people are going to get a lot of reps,' Davis said. 'But at the same time, I think I'm going to get a lot of the first-team reps. I think the object will be for me to definitely ease myself back in but still play hard.' Davis said he feels 100 percent healthy.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis is a good sleeper at TE2 because the Redskins don't have a strong wide receiver corps. He was the team's leading receiver when he went down last year, but Pierre Garcon had only played in one game at that point.

NYJ - Coach not commenting on RB Mike Goodson's status

Source: New York Daily News - Seth Walder

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan would not comment when asked if he thought RB Mike Goodson would return to the team at any point. Goodson did not report for training camp because he is dealing with personal issues unrelated to his offseason arrest.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Most outward indications are that the team doesn't have a big problem with Goodson's current absence, but the mystery around it combined with his facing serious legal charges stemming from an offseason incident can't be helping his cause. He signed a three-year deal for over six million dollars with the Jets in free agency, but Goodson is not guaranteed to make the team.

NYJ - RB Chris Ivory does not expect to miss much time

Source: New York Daily News - Seth Walder

Updating a previous report, New York Jets RB Chris Ivory (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, July 26, because of a hamstring injury. Ivory said he does not expect to miss more than two days of practice because of the injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A hamstring injury cost Ivory most of December last year. If he wants to shed the injury-prone, he needs to get back on the practice field. Those that have been reluctant to take Ivory as an RB3 in the fifth or sixth have more ammo for their case with this news.

SD - Money likely reason for WR Robert Meachem staying

Source: CBSSports.com - Clark Judge

The San Diego Chargers owe WR Robert Meachem plenty of guaranteed money, so that's likely the only reason he makes the 53-man roster. According to people close to the club, they are convinced he will not be a factor in 2013.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Meachem will go down as the one of the last bad signings that AJ Smith saddled the team with in 2012, along with OT Jared Gaither. The Chargers were afraid of the Bills jumping in to the battle for Meachem's services, and paid dearly for that fear.

CAR - RB says QB Cam Newton more vocal

Source: The Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers RB Mike Tolbert said he notices a change in QB Cam Newton from last season and described him as more vocal.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Newton improved as the year went on in 2012, and there have been numerous reports of a new approach to the game and being a leader this offseason. He's still worthy of a pick among the top five quarterbacks off of the board.

CLE - WR David Nelson cleared

Source: Medina County Gazette - Scott Petrak

Cleveland Browns WR David Nelson (knee) said he has been cleared to practice and will come off the Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 26.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Josh Gordon seemingly one slip-up from being on the outs with Cleveland, there could be some surprise opportunity in the Browns wide receiver corps. Nelson is a big, agile receiver who even has experience lining up in the slot, so he should stick.

WAS - DT Jarvis Jenkins suspended four games

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

Washington Redskins DE Jarvis Jenkins has been suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jenkins is a projected starter, and backup Adam Carriker is dealing with a triceps injury that required surgery and will keep him out for most of the season. The Redskins may be in the market for defensive end help to get them through the first month of the season.
