SITE NEWS

A. Footballguys Draft GM App Ready for Android
We've turned the Fantasy Football Mobile Draft world on it's ear with our Draft GM app. We released it for Apple first and promised we wouldn't forget our Android folks. Well here it is. It's unbelievable to me that you can harness this kind of power in your pocket. Just like with our Apple Apps, we'll soon be releasing our Footballguys Magazine and Draft Kit for Android that will include the Draft GM app. But that's probably a week or 10 days away. In the meantime, knock yourself out with the Draft GM app for Android. It rocks.

Over 1,600 people have already signed up to play in what is shaping up to be the biggest event of the year. Get in before the Average Draft Position starts moving with the flow of the training camps and preseason games.

Upcoming openings (all times Eastern):

  • Friday, July 26th: 7:00pm (4 open spots), 10:00pm (11 open spots)

D. New Draft Dominator Ready
With a new set of detailed stat projections out, that means an updated version of the Draft Dominator is ready. And make sure to understand as I'm getting some questions about how the Draft GM Mobile App compares to the Draft Dominator. The reality is that they're two different products. The Draft Dominator is more mature as we've been tweaking it for several years. It's more powerful and flexible and uses the computing horsepower of the desktop or laptop. The Draft GM is a ground up new design incorporating many of the same concepts, but it maximizes the cool features allowed with touchscreen like swiping and such. Both are awesome but the Draft Dominator is our "grandaddy" drafting tool that's super powerful and flexible.

F. Footballguys Mobile Tab Added
In case you've been lost at sea for the last few years, the world has turned mobile. Desktops and laptops will still always be a huge part of how people consume internet content but the emergence of smart phones and tablets has obviously been a game changer. We're trying to stay right with that for you guys that are moving that way as you've seen with our Mobile Apps in the Draft GM and the Footballguys Magazine and Draft Kit. We've added a new tab to the Footballguys home page giving an area to keep all the mobile content together in one place. Thanks to Footballguy Wizard Behind The Curtain Keith Overton for making this happen.

CIN - WR A.J. Green left practice

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Joe Reedy

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (undisclosed) is leaving practice early Thursday, July 25, after he fell awkwardly attempting to catch a deep pass. He was able to walk off the field.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The initial reports had Green down for a few minutes and leaving the field with trainers. Head coach Marvin Lewis said he thought Green would be ok, and Artrell Hawkins reported that an MRI showed no structural damage to his knee. Exhale.

SEA - WR Percy Harvin may need surgery

Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen

Updating previous reports, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said there is a possibility that WR Percy Harvin (hip) may need surgery on his injured hip. He is scheduled to get a second opinion on the injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carroll is one of the straighter shooters among NFL head coaches. It is sobering, but the reality is that we have no idea how many games Harvin will play this year in light of today's news.

SEA - WR Percy Harvin placed on PUP list

Source: KFFL.com

The Seattle Seahawks have placed WR Percy Harvin (hip) on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was unexpected. An MRI might have found a "slight" tear in his labrum that could require surgery, which would certainly sideline him for a good part of the season. Harvin's value has taken a hit either way, as he would have to play through the injury if he doesn't miss time. Err on the side of moving him farther down your board.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart on PUP List - Hopes to play Week 1

Source: Twitter

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) said he hopes to play in Week 1, but he did not sound optimistic. He was placed on the PUP List.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

DeAngelo Williams should be moving up your board even more than he did when our Dr. Jene Bramel wrote a piece questioning the health of Stewart's ankles last week. Stewart is nothing more than a bench running back in the late rounds right now, while Williams is looking like a very good RB3/Flex to open the season.

HOU - RB Arian Foster should return soon

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (calf) should be back on the field 'in a couple of days,' per head coach Gary Kubiak.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foster has come into the season nursing a hamstring injury, re-injured it, and still performed like a stud. He's one of the fantasy football forces that has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to minor injuries. Some might see this as a bad sign for Foster, but unless it keeps him from playing in the preseason, we won't be worried.

CLE - RB Trent Richardson feeling positive

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson (shin) said he feels way quicker this season now that he's playing at 225 pounds and not using padding around his ribs. He played nine games with fractured ribs last year. He also trusts that his shin will heal in time for the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson was a full-go and is healthier than he was in camp last year. He is usually available in the second half of the first round, and a steal if he falls to the second. Some drafts are seeing Richardson go in the top three, so if you want to take him high, you're not alone.

SF - WR Michael Crabtree placed on PUP list

Source: CSNBayArea.com

The San Francisco 49ers have placed WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This means that there's a very good chance that he'll be transferred to the PUP list to begin the season. The 49ers could still choose to put him on IR, but that would be a surprising move for a championship contender. If your league has long benches or an IR spot that you can use on a player on the PUP list, Crabtree is worth drafting late.

ATL - QB Matt Ryan contract details

Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen

Updating a previous report, the Atlanta Falcons and QB Matt Ryan have agreed on a five-year contract extension that is worth $103,750 million. $59 million is guaranteed with $63 million in the first three years, which is $20.75 million average per year.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ryan gets paid in the same offseason as Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers. Now he needs to join them in the group of quarterbacks that have piloted their team to a Super Bowl win.

CIN - Two RBs to split carries?

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Joe Reedy

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden indicated RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard could evenly split carries this season. The team likes Bernard's ability to catch passes out of the backfield.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green-Ellis should no longer be treated as the clear starter and lead back. Bernard obviously has more value in PPR leagues, but if he impresses, he could take more than half of the workload in the backfield. Bernard has as much upside as any running back that you can regularly get outside of the top 25 backs off of the board (for now).

WAS - QB Robert Griffin III practice update

Source: NFL.com - Jeff Darlington

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said QB Robert Griffin III (knee) will take 8 of 10 snaps during 7-on-7 workouts each day. That is the most work he will do for the first week of camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Griffin is unlikely to play in the preseason, but that shouldn't scare you away from taking him if he's still there after eight or nine quarterbacks have gone in your draft. If his knee wasn't sound yet, the Redskins would not even be risking his health in practices.

ARI - WR Ryan Swope to Reserve-Retired list

Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

The Arizona Cardinals placed rookie WR Ryan Swope (concussion) on the Reserve/Retired list because of ongoing concussion issues.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Swope released a statement via his agency Rep1 Sports that he suffered another concussion during OTAs and was advised that there are serious risks to returning to the game. He will return to Texas A&M to work on his degree and reassess his football prospect next year. Five or ten years ago, Swope might have been practicing with the team right now. Concussion awareness and a better understanding of when it is not safe for players to play after head injuries continues to change the injury landscape of the NFL.

GB - WR Randall Cobb will be given chance for bigger role

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Rob Reischel

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said he would not make a projection on how many receptions WR Randall Cobb will have this season but indicated Cobb will be given the chance to have a bigger role on offense this season. 'He'll be given opportunities, there's no question about that. But yes, I think he definitely has a lot more growth in front of him. And it's exciting, for how productive he's been as a young player,' McCarthy said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cobb could easily eclipse 100 receptions because he is also involved in the passing game downfield. He is being drafted as a low-end WR1 in PPR leagues because his true ceiling is still unknown and could be higher than any of us realize.

NYJ - WR Braylon Edwards re-joins team

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

Updating a previous report, the New York Jets agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free-agent WR Braylon Edwards (Seahawks) Wednesday, July 24.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edwards is well past his prime. This says more about the state of the Jets wide receiver corps than Edwards' chances of being relevant in fantasy leagues this year.

SD - WR Danario Alexander briefly leaves practice

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander (leg) left practice early Thursday, July 25, to receive treatment on a leg injury. Alexander was able to return to practice after the treatment.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It is great to hear that he returned to practice. Alexander's injury red flag is a deeper shade of red than any other player in the league. We'll be watching this closely to see if there are signs that his knee issues are coming back. Vincent Brown continues to look like an excellent upside pick in the later rounds of PPR drafts.

CAR - ILB Jon Beason could sit out training camp

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers LB Jon Beason (knee, shoulder) indicated there is a chance he does not practice during training camp because he is coming back from microfracture surgery. He said his goal is to be ready for the start of the regular season. Doctors have told Beason that he will have to manage his pain this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Beason has endured a myriad of serious injuries, but like his teammate Thomas Davis, seems to somehow get back to a high enough level to start no matter what misfortune throws his way. Beason's IDP value is on the fringes at this point, but if he can get on the field, he'll probably be worth rostering in leagues that start 3+ linebackers.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert could be used as several spots

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Joe Reedy

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert has the ability of lining up at any receiver position and showed he can be an effective blocker in the running game. Eifert could see time in the slot this season. 'I just learned there’s really nothing that he can’t do. He’s smart and he can block and can line up all the routes. He can line up outside in the slot and at tight end, and I think he’s going to be a major, major player around here for a lot of years,' offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Eifert could buck the trend of very rookie tight ends being fantasy relevant. His addition (along with Gio Bernard) helps Andy Dalton as the Bengals have a vast array of weapons and could go more uptempo/spread with the quality of personnel at the skill positions.

PHI - WR Jeremy Maclin not worried about contract

Source: Delaware News Journal - Martin Frank

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin is not going to let his contract become an issue, and is ready to prove what he is worth on the field. Maclin said he is aware of some of the other contracts players are signing.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Maclin hasn't stayed healthy or produced at a high level consistently enough to deserve a big contract extension. His dynasty value could slide a lot this season if he doesn't have a big year with the Eagles.

DEN - Coach praises RB Ronnie Hillman

Source: Twitter

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox praised RB Ronnie Hillman, saying he has a pro body and is even more capable as a full time running back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hillman got all of the reps with the first team, so his stock should be on the rise, while Montee Ball's stock continues to slide. We'll be monitoring this situation with Cecil Lammey on site at Dove Valley, but for now it looks like Hillman is the Denver back to draft.

TB - CB Darrelle Revis fielding punts

Source: The Tampa Tribune - Roy Cummings

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis is fielding punts in camp Thursday, July 25.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bucs have a major hole in the return game, but risking their shutdown corner to get a boost in production there could be ill-fated. Revis could get some return looks in key situations of close games, but that should be the extent of his use on special teams.

MIA - RB Marcus Thigpen is favorite for returns

Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins CB Nolan Carroll, WR Jasper Collins, RB Lamar Miller and RB Marcus Thigpen worked as kick returners Wednesday, July 24, with Thigpen as the clear cut favorite for the job after his stellar performance in the role last season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller owners would rather hear that the team isn't even having him try kickoffs because they want to preserve him for his big role in the running game, but chances are that this is just to keep him fresh in that area in case Thigpen goes down.

ARI - DE John Abraham signs

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The Arizona Cardinals signed free-agent DE John Abraham (Falcons) to an undisclosed deal Thursday, July 25.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals are clearly not backing down from the Seahawks and 49ers, who might both be without their top receiver for a good portion of the season. Eric Winston and John Abraham might have been the best two veterans on the free agent market and both address areas of a pressing need for the Cardinals. The NFC West is going to be a bloodbath this year.
