WAS - QB Robert Griffin III put through extensive workout

Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (knee) was put through an extensive work out by head coach Mike Shanahan Monday, July 22, after being cleared to practice by team doctors on the advice of Dr. James Andrews earlier in the day.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team feels great about his recovery and plan on having him under center for week one of the regular season. We may not see much of Griffin during the Redskins' preseason.

WAS - QB Robert Griffin III cleared to practice

Source: Twitter

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (knee) tweeted that doctors have cleared him to practice, but the coaches will ease him in.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A remarkable recovery for the young QB here. Griffin is going to be eased into training camp and we may not see much of him during the preseason. The team's goal is to have Griffin ready to start week one of the regular season. His current ADP (QB9) may rise slightly upon the release of this news.

DEN - OLB Von Miller facing suspension

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is facing a four-game suspension for violating NFL policy. The case is currently in the appeals process.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the Broncos here if the suspension is upheld. Miller is the league's top outside pass rusher and has compiled 30 sacks over the last two years. The Broncos' pass rush is already hurting with the loss of Elvis Dumervil (Ravens) in free agency. If Miller is out it would mean the Broncos would have to turn to free agent addition Shaun Phillips for the first month of the season.

CLE - RB Trent Richardson a full-go

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson (shin) reported to camp last week with the rookies and injured players and has been a full participant.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Browns here. Richardson is a star RB but has superstar potential if he can stay healthy. New OC Norv Turner knows how to build a quality ground game and Richardson will benefit from his coaching. Three RBs on teams Turner has coached have captured a total of five NFL rushing titles.

PHI - QB Nick Foles not playing to be backup QB

Source: Philly.com - Sheil Kapadia

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles said he is not in training camp to win the backup quarterback job, and wants to the guy to lead the team as the starting quarterback. "I have all the confidence in the world in my ability," Foles said. "But I still respect the players around me and I know what they're capable of doing. But at the end of the day, I'm not here to be a backup. I'm here to be the guy. I don't think we play this game to sit on the bench. We play it to play, and I'm here to play."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Some believe Foles is the leader in this competition. Michael Vick is more athletic and perhaps a better fit for the inside/outside zone read option. However, Foles is the more traditional pocket passer. The team will use more two TE sets if Foles is under center.

MIA - RB Lamar Miller not guaranteed starting job

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller has not earned the starting running back yet because the team believes RB Daniel Thomas can have a big season if he is able to stay healthy. Miller has received most of the reps with the first-team offense, but Thomas has received some reps with the starters.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller is the more explosive player here and should win the starting job in camp. Thomas has failed to impress during his pro career although the reports have been positive about his performance this offseason. If Thomas continues to impress then perhaps the Dolphins could be more RBBC than some think.

CLE - QB Brandon Weeden shows improvement

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski said QB Brandon Weeden significantly improved his footwork this offseason and is getting the ball out of his hand quicker.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's important for Weeden as he's trying to prove himself to the new regime in Cleveland. The team is gearing the offense to his strengths so we'll see more shotgun formations and shotgun passing from the Browns in 2013. New OC Norv Turner knows how to craft an effective offense and the Browns have some interesting weapons on the offensive side of the ball.

CLE - QB rotation to remain the same

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski said QB Brandon Weeden will with the first-team offense when practices begin. QB Jason Campbell will be working with the second-team offense while QB Brian Hoyer will work with the third-team offense.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Weeden is trying to prove himself to the new regime in Cleveland. So far most reports have been positive about his progress this offseason. Campbell has more experience than Hoyer but could lose his job as the primary backup in camp.

DAL - RB DeMarco Murray eager to work in one-back sets

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Clarence E. Hill Jr.

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray is excited about the possible renewed commitment to the running back, and he is eager to play out of the one-back alignment with a chance to run more and maximize his potential. When he gets the ball this year, it is expected to be in a one-back, two-tight end alignment since the team no longer has a fullback on the roster. 'It's something I'm looking forward to,' Murray said Sunday, July 21. 'When you get guys spread out, its going to be hard for them to have seven or eight guys in the (box) so its going to open a lot of running lanes.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray is a fine talent but durability is a huge concern. The Cowboys are seeking a more balanced offense this year after being near the bottom in rushing attempts in 2012. A healthy Murray would greatly help that cause. Rookie Joseph Randle (Oklahoma State) will be Murray's primary backup in 2013.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith thinks he has a shot

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Geno Smith thinks he has 'a great shot' to win the quarterback competition between himself and QB Mark Sanchez in training camp. Smith recently turned down an invitation this offseason to participate in Sanchez's annual passing camp, but Smith said the relationship between the two isn't strained.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanchez is feeling confident this offseason and has the experience edge over Smith. The rookie from West Virginia is intelligent, athletic, and can be an accurate passer on short routes. We'll see if he can win the starting job in training camp. If he is not the starter to begin the season he could eventually take over if Sanchez struggles during the year.

DAL - QB Tony Romo feels good

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) said he felt good after reporting to training camp Sunday, July 21. 'I feel good,' Romo said. 'I've been throwing. I've been running, doing all that stuff. I was excited about getting out here. Honestly just the smell of the grass, just being out on the football field is a great feeling. You never want to take that for granted. It can end at any moment. I'm just glad I was able to come back and get out here and get to play the game I love.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Romo had surgery earlier this offseason to remove a cyst from his back. The procedure was considered minor and he's good to go for camp. Of course the team will monitor his progress so they don't push him too much too soon. Romo's current ADP is QB12 and he's coming off the board at 8.04 in 12 team PPR leagues.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith signs

Source: The Star-Ledger - Conor Orr

The New York Jets signed second-round pick QB Geno Smith to a four-year deal.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith could be the QB of the future if he develops his pro potential. He'll compete with Mark Sanchez for the starting job this year. Smith is incredibly intelligent and can quickly diagnose what a defense is doing. He has the athleticism to run if a play breaks down although he will exhaust all passing options before looking to do so. Smith needs to work on his intermediate to deep accuracy and play with a shorter memory. It seems like mistakes compound for him and when he starts playing poorly it spirals downward. We'll see if Smith has the mental toughness to be a quality starter.

JAX - TE Marcedes Lewis may be freed up to receive

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

The Jacksonville Jaguars hope the acquisition of OT Luke Joeckel will free up TE Marcedes Lewis from blocking as much to enable him to catch more passes this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An interesting note for fantasy owners here. Lewis scored 10 receiving TDs in 2010 but has only scored four (all in 2012) since then. The inconsistent QB play from Blaine Gabbert hasn't helped. However, if Chad Henne wins the starting job then perhaps we'll see more from Lewis. The Jaguars will be without WR Justin Blackmon for the first four games of the year due to a suspension. That could lead to more targets for the veteran TE. Lewis is currently going undrafted in most 12 team PPR leagues.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith deal tied to workouts

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has a clause in his contract that is related directly to Smith showing up to a majority of the team's offseason workout program in the final two season of the deal. Smith is required to show up at 80 percent of the teams offseason activities to earn the bonus money.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see where Smith is at during that time of his career. He'll compete with Mark Sanchez for the starting job in training camp but many feel he's not ready.

TB - RB Peyton Hillis to work out

Source: SportsTalkFlorida.com - Jenna Laine

Free-agent RB Peyton Hillis (Chiefs) is scheduled to work out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tuesday, July 23.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hillis has gotten little interest this offseason. The Bucs are likely just updating their emergency list. They have a strong RB corps with Doug Martin, Michael Smith, fullback Brian Leonard, and rookie Mike James.

TEN - Optimistic about deal with Chance Warmack

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon

The Tennessee Titans are optimistic about getting a contract done with first-round draft choice OG Chance Warmack, but the two sides have to agree on whether the contract will have offset language.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Warmack is a huge upgrade for their interior offensive line. He has good foot quickness and can pull with ease. Warmack is like a freight train when he builds a head of steam and blocks with a nasty attitude. The Titans also added free agent OG Andy Levitre earlier this offseason. They should be able to run the ball more efficiently in 2013.

DAL - WR Danny Coale sits out practice

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys WR Danny Coale (knee) did not participate in practice Monday, July 22.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coale blew out his knee last November. The team expected him to be ready for the start of training camp. Coale will be eased in when he's ready so they don't re-aggravate his knee injury. He's competing for a spot on the depth chart behind Dez Bryant and Miles Austin. We like Dwayne Harris and rookie Terrence Williams (Baylor) more than Coale even when he's healthy.

SF - WR Michael Crabtree to be placed on PUP list

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') will be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harbaugh said nothing has happened during Crabtree's recovery to make the team less optimistic about Crabtree being able to play at some point in 2013. Getting Crabtree back at any time would be a boost for the 49ers offense. He's Colin Kaepernick's favorite target and a huge part of the offense.

PHI - QB Matt Barkley expects to compete for starting job

Source: CSNPhilly.com - Geoff Mosher

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley said he expects to compete with QBs Michael Vick and Nick Foles for the starting quarterback during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barkley is unlikely to win the starting job this year. He could sit and develop as the team's QB3 during his rookie season. If he progresses nicely then the team could put him in the mix for the starting job in 2014.

MIA - Pat Devlin sees time with second team

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins QB Pat Devlin received some snaps with the second-team offense during practice Monday, July 22, but is not expected to compete with Matt Moore for the No. 2 quarterback job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Devlin was an accurate QB at Delaware but has struggled to make a positive impression as a pro. The Dolphins have held onto Devlin after he was picked up as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He's trying to make the active roster this season after two years on the practice squad.

JAX - Jordan Rodgers waived

Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

The Jacksonville Jaguars have waived QB Jordan Rodgers.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rodgers is the younger brother of Packers superstar QB Aaron Rodgers. He might catch on as a camp arm somewhere else. The Jaguars have 2013 UDFA Matt Scott as a reserve QB. Scott is incredibly athletic with a rocket arm. However, he struggles mightily with accuracy and needs a lot of work before he ever sees the field in the NFL. Scott is competing with Mike Kafka to be the team's QB3 behind Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne.

PHI - Two cleared for camp

Source: Delaware News Journal - Martin Frank

Philadelphia Eagles TE James Casey (knee) and C Jason Kelce (knee) have been cleared to participate at the start of training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Casey could be involved in the offense more than some think. He's always been incredibly athletic but failed to play up to his potential with the Texans. If QB Nick Foles wins the starting job then we'll see Philadelphia use more two TE sets. Casey is competing for targets with veteran Brent Celek and rookie Zach Ertz.

ARI - Expect to know WR Ryan Swope's status soon

Source: Xtra 910 Radio - Mike Jurecki

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said the team is expected to know if WR Ryan Swope (concussion) passed his physical and has been cleared to participate in training camp Monday, July 22.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Swope is a talented rookie WR who fell to the sixth-round of the 2013 NFL draft due to concussion worries. If healthy he could be a dangerous weapon as a slot WR for the Cardinals. Swope is a crisp route runner with incredible my ball mentality and elite concentration. There's a chance the Cardinals could put Swope on Injured Reserve and shelve him during his rookie season.

NFL - WR Laurent Robinson has other visits scheduled

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

Free-agent WR Laurent Robinson (Jaguars) will visit with the New York Jets Monday, July 22, but he also has workouts scheduled with the New England Patriots and Detroit Lions, according to a source. Robinson filed a grievance against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, hoping to be paid his 2013 base salary of $2.6 million. Robinson claims he is symptom-free from concussions now.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots are looking for WR help after the release of WR Donald Jones. The Lions are looking for additional weapons for their passing game as well. Robinson is only 28 years old but the four concussions he suffered last year with the Jaguars clouds his NFL future.

NYJ - WR Austin Collie to work out

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The New York Jets will work out free-agent WR Austin Collie (Colts) Monday, July 22.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets need WR help and Collie would provide that if healthy. Collie is trying to make a comeback from a ruptured right patella tendon. He also has a long concussion history that clouds his NFL future. Earlier reports indicated Collie wouldn't be 100% healthy until October.

TB - DE Adrian Clayborn hopes to be a full go for camp

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Adrian Clayborn (knee) said the hope is that he will be a full go for the start of training camp. Clayborn is returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in Week 3 of the 2012 season. 'The plan is to be ready to go full-speed in camp,' Clayborn said. 'Being a year in, I know myself, I feel like I know the defense a little bit more, and I know Bowers does. I feel like we're going to make that next step.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Clayborn suffered a torn ACL in week three last season. He's been recovering since then and is expected to be near full strength by the time the regular season starts. The Bucs need pass rushers Clayborn and Da'Quan Bowers to stay healthy this year and start playing up to their potential. The team let DE Michael Bennett (Seahawks) walk away in free agency.

WAS - Want to sign OLB Brian Orakpo to extension

Source: The Washington Post - Mark Maske

The Washington Redskins want to sign LB Brian Orakpo to a contract extension before he can become a free agent next offseason. It is not known if the two sides are actively negotiating a contract at this point.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A wise move by the Redskins here. Orakpo could be in line for a huge money deal if he hits the open market next offseason. Pectoral injuries have cut short each of his last two seasons so his price should be lower now. If healthy Orakpo is an impact pass rusher, having compiled 30 sacks in his first 49 games.

TB - Will release CB Eric Wright

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will release CB Eric Wright. Wright's trade to the San Francisco 49ers was voided because he failed a physical.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bucs want nothing to do with Wright and that's why they tried to trade him away to the 49ers. He'll hit the open market now and may find it difficult to find a team willing to take a chance on him.

MIA - DE Olivier Vernon looking good

Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins DE Olivier Vernon looked good during practice at defensive end Sunday, July 21, and had two sacks during the workouts. He is improving in his second year and could be the favorite for a starting spot in Week 1, depending on the health of DE Dion Jordan (shoulder). Jordan said he plans on being patient with his injury in order to lengthen his NFL career.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Dolphins here. Vernon looked good in a part time role last year and should see his snaps increase even if he isn't the starter. He's explosive off the snap and plays with a mean streak. He's a football junkie, hard worker, and incredibly athletic. He can even drop into coverage if need be. The Dolphins are developing quite the group of young pass rushers.
