JAX - RB Maurice Jones-Drew's status to be evaluated

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said the team will evaluate RB Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) at the start of training camp to see how much can do during practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones-Drew's status has been ominously vague during the offseason. He has earned our trust with year after after of stud-level performance, but this foot injury sounds like the kind of thing that could leave him never the same back he was before the injury. We won't know until we see him on the field, and it sounds like he might be limited in the preseason. His third-round ADP reflects the wide span between his floor and ceiling this year.

NYJ - Rex Ryan praises QB Mark Sanchez

Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan praised QB Mark Sanchez, while not tipping his hand as to who his starting quarterback will be in 2013. 'Obviously, (Sanchez has) had his ups and downs and things, but there's a lot of positive things about what Mark's accomplished, won four road playoff games,' Ryan said. 'But this Geno Smith is really a talented young man.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanchez's four road playoff wins should have zero effect on the quarterback competition outcome. Ryan is just trying to build confidence in the battered psyche of Sanchez. The compliment given to Smith was more unequivocal and indicates the direction the franchise is headed at quarterback, sooner or later. We're guessing sooner.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy says teams questioned love of game

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tyler Dunne

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy said teams questioned his love for the game leading up to the draft but believes his production on the field speaks for itself. 'I know a lot of teams questioned how much I love football because I don't talk about it 24/7,' Lacy said. 'But I feel like it's not how much you know about it or how much you watch it. It's all about production and obviously up to this point I did what I was supposed to do. You put me on the field and I'll contribute.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lacy came off as a passive, even depressed personality in Dunne's piece. He obviously has talent, but there is an extra level of drive that is necessary to succeed in the NFL. The article also recounted how Alabama players would have to practice and play hurt because of the quality of players coming up behind them. This could be an explanation for why so many Crimson Tide prospects have needed surgery after leaving Tuscaloosa.

JAX - WR Justin Blackmon unlikely to go on PUP list

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said WR Justin Blackmon (groin) could be limited at the start of training camp but will not need to be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Blackmon's conditioning will be something to watch, because he will serve a four-game suspension and could be less than game speed when he returns. He wasn't really himself until mid-season after a holdout last year. Blackmon could end up being a big value, but he won't help you for at least the first month of the season.

PHI - WR Jeremy Maclin plans to be more involved

Source: CSNPhilly.com - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin said he is expecting to be more involved in the team’s offense in 2013. Maclin believed that the previous offense was tailored around WR DeSean Jackson. “There’s two ways you can run the West Coast Offense,” Maclin said. “You can run it where the flanker position, you can put him in the slot, put him in motion, or you can tailor it around a single receiver who’s always by himself. And when Marty was here, we tailored it around the flanker position. That’s just how it was.”

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Maclin has to stay healthy for any scheme changes to matter. The Eagles' offseason moves on offense focus mostly on the tight end position, so that change in emphasis could limit Maclin's upside, along with Chip Kelly's penchant for using good blocking wide receivers. Arrelious Benn would be the best blocking wide receiver on the team if he makes the final 53. Maclin has upside as an eighth or ninth round pick, but so do the other receivers going in that area of drafts.

SEA - WR Percy Harvin expected to receive some carries

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to give WR Percy Harvin some carries this season because he is familiar with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell's system. Harvin could receive two or three carries a game, mostly in the red zone. Harvin could also often be used as a decoy during plays.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We applaud the Seahawks here. They need to be creative with a weapon like Harvin and that's what they'll do in 2013. Harvin can score anytime he touches the ball and will be the centerpiece of the team's passing game.

GB - RB Johnathan Franklin may have role immediately

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Rob Reischel

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin could have a complementary role on offense immediately if he does not start because he is a natural pass catcher. Franklin may not be big enough to be an every-down running back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Franklin has the slashing style to operate well in the Packers offense, and he's a durable, versatile back. He'll get on the field in some way, shape, or form, and if he impresses, his role will grow. Franklin is a good target in the double digit rounds of PPR leagues.

GB - RB DuJuan Harris may not be starting RB candidate

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Rob Reischel

Green Bay Packers RB DuJuan Harris may not be a candidate for the starting running back job because he may is too small to be an every-down back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harris is still the best returning back and he could have a big role just because of his experience in the offense and the sometimes rough goings for rookies as they get their feet under them. He's an excellent late round pick in deep leagues.

NE - WR Donald Jones had bonus due

Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

The New England Patriots were scheduled to pay WR Donald Jones a $200,000 bonus for reporting to camp before they decided to release him.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones did not do enough to earn that, which should tell you his future in the NFL. He might catch on with another team that has less complicated roles for wide receivers, but it could be a wait until someone gets hurt for Jones.

NE - WR Donald Jones released

Source: Patriots.com

The New England Patriots have released WR Donald Jones. The team has also signed free-agent WR Perez Ashford (Browns) and undrafted free-agent WR Quentin Sims (Tennessee-Martin). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ashford is a Matt Waldman favorite because of his terrific hands and ball skills. The Patriots also have UDFA rookies Kenbrell Thompkins and Mark Harrison, so a lot of their wide receivers in camp will be rookies learning the ropes.

OAK - Lucas Nix could push for starting job

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Scott Bair

Oakland Raiders OG Lucas Nix could push OG Mike Brisiel for the starting right guard job if he performs well during training camp because Brisiel is not a good fit for the team's power-blocking scheme.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brisiel was signed away from the Houston Texans last year as the Raiders switched to a zone blocking running game under Greg Knapp, who like Brisiel, came to the Raiders from the Texans last year. Knapp is gone while Brisiel remains, but possibly outside of the starting lineup.

OAK - Two to compete for RT job

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Scott Bair

Oakland Raiders OT Khalif Barnes and Menelik Watson are expected to compete for the starting right tackle job during training camp. Watson should receive playing time if he is able to master the offensive scheme during camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watson is raw, but he has starting left tackle upside. The Raiders already have one of the best in the league in Jared Veldheer, so Watson will be slotted at right tackle. If he can hit, the Raiders will have two cornerstone tackles, which should help Matt Flynn or Tyler Wilson get rolling this year.

SF - CB Eric Wright acquired

Source: ESPN.com - Josina Anderson

The San Francisco 49ers have acquired CB Eric Wright from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a conditional late-round draft choice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a bit of a surprise, as Wright was still slated to start, although his recent DUI arrest was probably the last straw. It was the second of Wright's career, but the first one was dismissed. Tampa is probably relegated to starting rookie second-round pick Johnthan Banks opposite Darrelle Revis, who is recovering from an ACL tear. The team does have a dynamic duo of Dashon Golson and Mark Barron at safety, but expect to see Drew Brees and Matt Ryan test Banks early and often in matchups.

DAL - ILB Sean Lee should be fine

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee (toe) is expected to be good to go for the start of training camp Saturday, July 20.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lee is a defensive superstar when healthy, but that hasn't been often enough in recent years, with a toe injury in 2012 ending his season after only six games and wrist injury in 2011 slowing down his production. If he can stay close to 100% for all 16 games this year, that will be huge for a team transitioning to a 4-3 defense.

NE - Alfonzo Dennard may get out of DUI charge

Source: Scout.com - Aaron Wilson

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard did not comply during a suspicion of DUI stop by not blowing hard enough on an administered breathalyzer test, according to the police report. Dennard is disputing that claim and said he was asked to blow into the breathalyzer and was told he did not reach the legal limit. Dennard also reportedly passed a field sobriety test administered by police, according to an NFL.com source. Dennard claims he was not asked to take a blood test. Without a breathalyzer test proving he was over the legal limit for alcohol consumption, or a blood test showing he was legally intoxicated, prosecutors would have to prove he was drunk based on police video from the scene of the traffic stop.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This doesn't preclude Dennard getting suspended for the arrest and bad publicity it created, and he could be under more scrutiny because of his arrest before the draft last year. Still, this is good news for Dennard, and if true, it should minimize the punishment he faces from the league, his team, and the legal system. The Patriots can not afford to lose Dennard for an extended period.
