IND - TE Weslye Saunders suspended 8 games

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

Indianapolis Colts TE Weslye Saunders has been suspended for the first eight games of the 2013 season for a second violation of the NFL's policy performance-enhancing substances. He was suspended last year for four games for violating the PED policy as well. He's eligible to participate in training camp and the preseason. After the team's final exhibition game, he won't be barred from team facilities until Nov. 4.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the second time Saunders has been suspended during his pro career. He was suspended for the first four games of the year last season. Another strike and Saunders would get bounced for the entire year.

TB - Coach discusses kicking situation

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Stephen Holder

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano discussed how losing PK Connor Barth (Achilles') could affect the team's plans in 2013, saying Barth was a weapon with longer field goals. Schiano said he is not sure if PK Lawrence Tynes will be as effective from those distances. "I thought Connor was a weapon in the longer field goals," Schiano said. "He was exceptional over 40 yards. We'll have to play that out. I have not coached Lawrence at all. So, I couldn't tell you. I just look at the numbers. But we'll see. That'll all play itself out."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Buccaneers should consider themselves fortunate a player like Tynes was available at this time. Tynes ranked second in the league last year with 145 points scored after he went 33-of-39 on field goals in 2012.

NYG - Likely to go with the hot hand at RB

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Ohm Youngmisuk

The New York Giants are likely to go with the hot hand at running back when choosing between RB David Wilson and RB Andre Brown, according to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN New York. While Wilson may have the upper hand in terms of who will be the lead back, he has a lot to prove in training camp to earn the coaches trust, according to Youngmisuk.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The dreaded 'hot hand' is not what fantasy owners like to hear. Wilson is the big play back who should be the starter and get the most touches on the season. Brown proved last year that he could be effective when healthy. He's the bigger back and may be the team's short yardage and goalline specialist in 2013.

DAL - QB Tony Romo cleared

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Calvin Watkins

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) has been cleared to begin practicing for the start of training camp Sunday, July 21. He was kept out of most offseason workouts following April surgery to extract a non-cancerous cyst from his back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is what was expected. Romo had minor back surgery this offseason with a targeted return date near the start of training camp. The team may ease him into practice at the beginning of workouts.

WAS - WR Pierre Garcon medically cleared

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon (shoulder) was medically cleared by Dr. James Andrews earlier this week, and will be a full go when the team opens up training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Garcon had shoulder surgery shortly after the Redskins' were out of the playoffs. This whole time Garcon has felt confident that he would be ready for the start of training camp. "The shoulder is good," Garcon said in June. "There shouldn't be any worries for me for the season coming up. So it should be good to go." Garcon's toe is now the only problematic body part. He's going to wear custom made shoes to help to help support the toe. We like Garcon as a low end WR2 in 2013. His current ADP is WR23 and he's coming off the board at 6.05 in 12 team PPR leagues.

CHI - WR Brandon Marshall hopes TE opens pass game

Source: ESPNChicago.com

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall said Tuesday, July 16, that he hopes the offseason addition of TE Martellus Bennett will take some of the receiving pressure off him. Marshall had career highs with 118 receptions, 194 targets and 1,508 yards. The Bears receiver with the next highest number of targets was WR Earl Bennett, with 49. Marshall feels the wear and tear might have led to his offseason hip surgery. 'I am (looking forward to having more weapons),' Marshall said. 'It was tough sledding last year. I think that's why I had to have surgery. I had 2-3 guys on me every single play, but bringing in big boy Martellus, I don't think the league really knows how good he is.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We think Bennett will be a great help for the Bears passing game. He'll be able to exploit mismatches and should become a favorite target for QB Jay Cutler. With improved weapons, a better offensive line, and a more creative offense we feel the Bears will have one of the most exciting offenses in the league.

OAK - TE David Ausberry expected to get first shot at TE

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Scott Bair

Oakland Raiders TE David Ausberry is expected to receive the first chance to win the starting tight end job during training camp. TEs Nick Kasa and Mychal Rivera are expected to receive long looks during preseason games. TE Richard Gordon is also expected to be a candidate for the job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ausberry is athletic, determined, and swift in the open field. He does have the size and athleticism to be a weapon if used appropriately, but the lack of proven production tempers expectations.

BAL - RB Vonta Leach could return

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson

Ralph Vitolo, agent for free-agent FB Vonta Leach (Ravens), did not rule out the possibility of Leach re-signing with the Baltimore Ravens.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This has always been a possibility for the veteran fullback. The Ravens could toss Leach a veteran minimum deal to come back if he can't reach a deal with a team like the Dolphins.

MIA - RB Vonta Leach passed up, for now

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

The Miami Dolphins have decided to enter training camp without making a contract offer to free-agent FB Vonta Leach, according to a source. The team plans to weigh the options it has on roster.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Dolphins have a couple of options in place, but nothing as good as Leach. Jorvorskie Lane and Charles Clay (TE) could line up at fullback for the Dolphins in training camp.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill would like to move around more

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill said he would like to throw on the run more this season but understands it would be a small part of the offense if it occurs. 'I like throwing on the run,' Tannehill said. 'Whether it's designed, a naked bootleg, or something that's spontaneous, I think it adds an element where defensive linemen just aren't teeing up.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tannehill is an athletic QB who can make plays with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. He proved in college that he could handle the rush and stay calm under pressure. Using bootlegs would draw defenses up and allow downfield routes from Mike Wallace to develop.

DAL - QB Tony Romo running mountains to prepare

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Calvin Watkins

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) is running mountains to prepare for training camp, according to owner Jerry Jones. Jones said Romo is ready to go for training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There should be a Rocky IV like video montage put up on YouTube. If Romo could work out in a barn that would only be icing on the cake.

BUF - Three expected to compete for No. 2 WR job

Source: BuffaloBills.com - Mark Armstrong

Buffalo Bills WRs T.J. Graham, Robert Woods and Brad Smith are expected to be candidates for the No. 2 wide receiver job during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Woods in this competition. He's a fantastic route runner and can make difficult catches seem routine. We feel Graham's best spot is at slot WR where his speed and quickness can come into play.

GB - TE Jermichael Finley dialed in

Source: ESPNMilwaukee.com - Jason Wilde

Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley has been dialed in during offseason activities, according to tight end coach Jerry Fontenot. "He seems like he's really dialed in. as far as expectations go, I didn't set any expectations last year, we just wanted to continue to improve each and every week, and that's the same mentality we're taking this year let's get better, let's find a starting point and let's get better each and every week. We're capable of doing great things," Fontenot said. "I think we definitely had a year to grow off of last year and the way we finished off the year, I'm happy with where we're starting. But again, we have a long ways to go."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting Finley focused and on point is nothing but a good thing for the Packers. They could use Finley more this year since they lost WR Greg Jennings (Vikings) in free agency.

CIN - WR A.J. Green praises QB Andy Dalton

Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green praised QB Andy Dalton, and said that 2013 is not a make-or-break year for him. 'I don't feel like it's a make-or-break year for him,' Green said. 'He's still the quarterback of the future because he has every intangible to be a great one. He works hard, he has great leadership. I think he'll be fine.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We agree with Green here. Other young QBs like Christian Ponder (Vikings), Blaine Gabbert (Jaguars), and Jake Locker (Titans) are likely in make or break seasons. Dalton has taken the Bengals to the playoffs twice during his two years in the league. They are set to make another postseason run in 2013.

WAS - TE Chris Cooley retires

Source: The Washington Post - Mark Maske and Dan Steinberg

Washington Redskins TE Chris Cooley is retiring from the NFL and he will join the team's radio booth in 2013. Cooley was signed to a multi-year deal by ESPN 980 (980 AM), the team's flagship station in Washington. 'To add a talent and fan favorite like Chris to our team will add excitement to our broadcast and a level of unpredictability for our listeners,' the executive producer of the Redskins Radio Network said in a written statement.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooley is a personality and should be able to provide entertaining analysis on Redskins games. The Redskins have moved on with Fred Davis, Logan Paulsen, rookie Jordan Reed (Florida), and Niles Paul at the TE position.

NFL - RB Jahvid Best clears waivers

Source: thesidelineview.com - Adam Caplan

Free-agent RB Jahvid Best (Lions) has cleared waivers and is free to sign with any team.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Best's days in the NFL are likely over.

SF - TE Vance McDonald likely will be No. 2 TE

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald likely will be the team's No. 2 tight end this season because he performed well during offseason workouts. McDonald could see a significant amount of playing time if he wins the job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team lost Delanie Walker (Titans) in free agency. McDonald was added in the draft to play as a backup TE behind Vernon Davis. He's got good size and the athleticism to create mismatches when he's on the field.

DAL - Joshua Brent to retire

Source: FOXSports.com - Mike Garafolo

Dallas Cowboys DT Joshua Brent is retiring to focus on off-the-field issues.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We applaud Brent for making this decision. He needs to get his life back on track and stepping away from football may help him do that.

MIA - Jamar Taylor expected to be ready for camp

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins CB Jamar Taylor (hernia) should be ready for the start of training camp after undergoing sports hernia surgery this offseason. The team could limit Taylor during the first few weeks of camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Taylor is going to be competing for a starting job this year. He's a big, physical rookie from Boise State who does not back down from a challenge. During training camp Brent Grimes, Richard Marhsall, and Taylor will compete for pecking order on the depth chart.

TB - CB Darrelle Revis will be on the field next week

Source: Buccaneers.com

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis (knee) will be on the field in some capacity next week when the team practices for the first time, according to head coach Greg Schiano.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Bucs here. The team will take it easy on Revis as he returns from this knee injury. The plan is to have Revis at full strength by the start of the regular season.

TB - DT Gary Gibson to start camp as starting nose tackle

Source: PewterReport.com

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DT Gary Gibson will start training camp as the starting nose tackle, according to head coach Greg Schiano, because of the experience factor. Schiano said DT Akeem Spence looked good and the competition is open.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Spence is expected to win the starting job at some point. He's not the biggest NT in the league but at 6'1" 307 he's quick off the snap. There were some in the scouting community who compared Spence to DT Geno Atkins (Bengals) before the draft.
