DET - RB Jahvid Best cut

Source: DetroitLions.com

The Detroit Lions have released RB Jahvid Best.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This has been in the works for some time. Best hasn't played since October of 2011 when he suffered his last concussion. The Lions kept him on the roster as he continued to suffer from concussion symptoms. The story of Best will always read "what might have been?" He flashed incredible ability during his short time in the NFL but failed to stay healthy after multiple concussions.

PHI - Teammate thinks QB Michael Vick will win starting job

Source: Phillymag.com - Sheil Kapadia

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson said he believes QB Michael Vick will beat out QB Nick Foles for the starting quarterback job during training camp. 'In my opinion, honestly, I donít want to be put on the spot, I know yíall gonna do me like that, but Michael Vickís got a lot of confidence in himself. Heís been there, going on 12 years in the NFL, I think heíll get the job,' Jackson said. 'Nick Foles is a great, great talent coming in from Arizona, actually a Pac-12 guy. He has the hype, he has the skills as well too. Going into camp, I think Michael Vick will probably be the starter, but we still donít know. I think [head coach Chip Kellyís] gonna keep everybody honest and keep everybody open.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foles was reportedly the front runner but this competition is far from over. The Eagles offense will look different depending on which QB wins the starting job. With Vick in the lineup we'll see more inside/outside zone/read option. With Foles in the lineup we'd see more use of the TEs and a more traditional passing game. We may not have an answer at QB until the third week of the preseason.

MIA - Talks with RB Vonta Leach to continue

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

The Miami Dolphins are expected to continue talks with the agent for free-agent FB Vonta Leach (Ravens) this week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miami is considered the front runner at this time but a team like the Ravens may still be interested. The Dolphins hope to be able to reach a contract agreement with Leach in the near future.

TEN - Hope to get RB Chris Johnson more involved as receiver

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon

The Tennessee Titans would like to get RB Chris Johnson more involved in the passing game this season. Johnson only caught 36 passes for 232 yards last season, which were both career lows.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Shonn Greene added we'll see Johnson used less on short yardage and goalline situations. This could lead to more targets for Johnson if QB Jake Locker can keep the chains moving. We like Johnson as a RB2 in 2013. His current ADP is RB13 and he's coming off the board at 2.06 in 12 team PPR leagues.

HOU - Believe QB Matt Schaub can play better in big games

Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith said QB Matt Schaub knows he will be judged by how he plays in big games and that he could play better in those games. 'He understands that. He knows that. And he does have to play better in those situations for us to take our team to the next level,' Smith said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've seen the best from Schaub as a pro and it may not be enough to get the Texans over the top. They added a serious weapon to the passing game when they selected WR DeAndre Hopkins (Clemson) in the first-round of the 2013 NFL draft. Hopkins reminded some in the scouting community of Reggie Wayne (Colts) because of his hands, concentration, and route running ability.

TB - PK Lawrence Tynes signed

Source: Twitter

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent PK Lawrence Tynes (Giants) to an undisclosed deal.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tynes was a Pro Bowl alternate last year after scoring 145 points for the Giants in 2012. He hit 33-of-39 field goals in 2012 and could have a similar efficiency rate this year for the Buccaneers. Bucs general manager Mark Dominik said. ''Lawrence and his agent, Ken Harris, had other standing opportunities, but we are pleased that they thought this was the right place for Lawrence to continue his career.''

TB - PK Connor Barth out

Source: The Tampa Tribune - Roy Cummings

Tampa Bay Buccaneers PK Connor Barth (Achilles') is out with a torn Achilles'. He's likely to miss the entire season. He'll be placed on the non-football injury list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Our Mike Herman had Barth as the #16 rated kicker before his injury. We'll see how camp shakes out but Tynes is a guy with experience. He'll likely be under the radar of owners (unlike yourself) who aren't on top of everything.

STL - RB Daryl Richardson listed as starter

Source: StLouisRams.com

St. Louis Rams RB Daryl Richardson is listed as a projected starter on the team's initial depth chart heading into training camp and the preseason, followed by RBs Isaiah Pead and Zac Stacy, who are listed as 'key contributors'.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson has the most experience of anyone left on the Rams RB corps. He's fast and can change direction quickly without losing much speed. Pead is going to miss the first game of the year due to a suspension but may be the best all-around runner on the roster. Stacy is a powerful rookie from Vanderbilt who may end up as the team's grinder in short yardage and goalline situations.

CLE - RB Trent Richardson vows to be ready

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson (shin) missed the mandatory minicamp in June and the final week of organized team activities (OTAs) due to a muscle strain in his right shin. However, he said Tuesday, July 16, that when training camp opens July 25 that he will be ready to roll. 'I'll be full-go right from the get-go and y'all out there will see me flying around,' Richardson said. 'I can't wait to get out there and I can't wait for the first game. I've been waiting forever this season and I know it's going to be a good one for us.' Richardson will report at his prescribed weight of 225, down about seven pounds from last season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson has the ability to be the best RB in the league. He now has the OC (Norv Turner) who knows how to get the most out of his RBs. Three RBs on teams Turner has coached have captured a total of five NFL rushing titles. Richardson had a fine rookie season but struggled through various injuries. If he could just stay healthy then the skies the limit for the second-year back.

ATL - Tony Gonzalez thinks OL biggest uncertainty

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez said he believes the offensive line is the team's biggest question mark entering training camp because there will be a few new starters. He believes C Peter Konz will be able to take over as the starting center and that OT Mike P. Johnson has the chance to take over the right tackle job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd agree with Gonzalez here. Offensively the team is set at the skill position players. The big guys up front need to gel and help both the ground game and the passing game in 2013.

BAL - Three expected to compete for No. 3 TE job

Source: BaltimoreRavens.com - Garrett Downing

Baltimore Ravens TEs Billy Bajema, Alex Silvestro and Matt Furstenburg will be competing for the No. 3 tight end job during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bajema could have an edge in the competition because it is mostly a blocking role and he has experience as a blocker. The main factor as to who wins the job may come down to which player performs the best on special teams. We'll see Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson as the two primary TEs for the Ravens in 2013.

CHI - QB Jay Cutler not worrying about contract

Source: ESPNChicago.com

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler said he is not worried about his contract situation at this point and will allow things to play out during the season. 'That stuff takes care of itself. As long as we're winning football games and I'm playing well, hopefully they keep me around. If that doesn't happen, we'll see how it plays out. I'm not going to be distracted by it. I can't worry about it. I've been in this league long enough. I've seen guys come and guys go. It will work out the way it's supposed to work out,' Cutler said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cutler is entering the final year of his contract with the Bears and could break the bank with a big season in 2013. New head coach Marc Trestman is known as an offensive genius and should build a passing game that accentuates Cutler's strengths. The O-Line is vastly improved and Cutler should get rid of the ball quicker in this offense. We like him as a value QB who can be added in your draft. His current ADP is QB17 and he's coming off the board at 11.09 in 12 team PPR leagues.

CHI - RB Matt Forte thinks he could get more receptions

Source: ESPNChicago.com - Michael C. Wright

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte said he believes he could be more involved in the passing game this season under head coach Marc Trestman. 'I would expect (to be used more in 2013). Coach Trestman, I think he said he watched a lot of film on me and has seen me run different routes,' Forte said. 'So we'll get back to catching the ball out of the backfield like we did the prior years.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We agree with Forte here. He'll be the centerpiece of Trestman's offense and should finish the year as a top 10 fantasy RB. His current ADP is RB11 and he's coming off the board at 2.01 in 12 team PPR leagues.

DEN - QB John Elway comments on suspensions of execs

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Denver Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway said a clear message has been sent to the team's staff -- front office and players -- following the drunk-driving incidents that resulted in the suspensions of two team personnel executives.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Elway had strong words for Heckert and Russell. ďItís particularly disappointing that two members of my staff acted so irresponsibly. Simply put, itís unacceptable and inexcusable. While Matt and Tom have apologized and taken accountability, itís most important they take advantage of whatever help they need. We will learn from this and take the necessary action as we move forward in a positive way.Ē

KC - QB Alex Smith making smooth transition

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith said new head coach Andy Reid has been 'very hands-on' regarding the quarterbacks and the offense, which incorporates some of the same terminology that Smith used under the direction of San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman for the past two seasons. He seems happy to have a new beginning. 'To see them make the move and trade and get me, and it's what I wanted to happen -- very exciting. Now, it's my turn to go make the most of it.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith's play in 2013 will determine how successful the Chiefs are. The team is built on both sides of the ball and are closer to a playoff push than some think. If they can get quality play from Smith we could see them push for a .500 record in 2013.

CLE - WR Travis Benjamin heavy favorite for punt return role

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns WR Travis Benjamin will enter training camp as the overwhelming favorite to win the punt return job because of the playmaking ability he showed with limited returns last season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin is incredibly quick and dangerous in the open field. He has the speed to take it the distance if he gets a crease.

CLE - RB Montario Hardesty could be on bubble

Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty could be on the roster bubble during training camp because offensive coordinator Norv Turner likes running backs that are able to catch the ball and Hardesty has been a liability as a receiver.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have a difficult time believing Hardesty is on the bubble. This offseason while Trent Richardson was out (shin) we saw Hardesty get most of the first team reps for the Browns.

NYJ - WR Stephen Hill did not have many yards after catch

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill only recorded 38 yards after catch last season on 21 receptions.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill was incredibly raw as a receiver coming out of Georgia Tech. He's got strong upside if he's able to develop and play up to his physical potential. However, the Jets have a poor QB situation and Hill may not be much of a fantasy factor in 2013.

ATL - TE Tony Gonzalez says this will be last season

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez said this will definitely be his last season in the NFL. He was going to retire after last season, but his family convinced him to come back for one more season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the same thing he said last year. We'll see if the Falcons can make that Super Bowl run Gonzalez has been waiting for.

DAL - DE DeMarcus Ware expects move to DE will be fine

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Doug Farrar

Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware said he expects his move to defensive end in a 4-3 defensive alignment to work out fine because it is basically the same thing he did as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 defensive alignment. 'I think people are overplaying it. I mean, you're going to have adjustments going from a 3-4 to a 4-3, but there aren't as many moving parts with your linebackers, so it's a little easier playing a 4-3. I'm still playing outside contain and rushing the passer, and now, I'm just putting my hand in the dirt. I mean, there's really no big difference -- there may be for some of the interior guys and the linebackers, but going from outside linebacker to defensive end, you're doing the same thing,' Ware said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ware's on the right track here. Rushing the passer is his specialty and he'll be able to do that no matter where he lines up or what scheme he's in.

HOU - ILB Brian Cushing cleared

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Houston Texans LB Brian Cushing (knee) has received clearance from Dr. James Andrews to participate once training camp begins. The team likely will limit Cushing's participation early in camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Texans here. We'll see Cushing eased in but most certainly he will participate later in the preseason. The team lost some of it's swagger when Cushing went down with this knee injury last year.

HOU - Confident S Ed Reed will be ready for Week 1

Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith said the team is confident that FS Ed Reed (hip) will be ready for the start of the regular season. Smith said Reed's rehab is going well, and the team is focused on having him ready for Week 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're unlikely to see much from Reed during training camp and the preseason. Reed refuses to guarantee he'll be ready by week one but the feeling is now he should be. We'll get more information on his recovery as we get closer to the regular season.
