PHI - QB Nick Foles in lead over QB Michael Vick

Source: The Morning Call - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles is in the lead in the quarterback battle because he outplayed QB Michael Vick in OTAs and minicamp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An important note for fantasy owners here. If Foles wins the starting job then the team will use more multiple TE sets and are likely to run the inside zone read less. The offense will look more like a traditional NFL offense than the high powered running/option offense we saw Chip Kelly run at Oregon. Some have speculated that if Foles wins the job then Vick is expendable. The Eagles have rookie Matt Barkley and veteran Dennis Dixon on the roster as well.

SD - Coach wants RB Ryan Mathews to be the guy

Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy wants RB Ryan Mathews to be the guy in 2013. McCoy said the depth the team added when they signed RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown was not a reflection on Mathews. McCoy has one message for Mathews; 'To have a great year and be the guy.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Durability and confidence have been two issues Mathews needs to overcome in order to play up to his potential. He finished the 2011 season as the 7th best RB in fantasy football but fell to 30th last year. Mathews' current ADP is RB27 and he's coming off the board at 5.02 in 12 team PPR leagues. The Chargers could take Mathews off the field in certain situations and use free agent addition Danny Woodhead as their primary third down weapon. Since they're likely to be playing from behind a lot we could see more from Woodhead than some think.

MIA - Scheduled to meet with RB Vonta Leach's agent

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

The Miami Dolphins are scheduled to meet with the agent of free agent LB Vonta Leach (Ravens) this week. Leach could still return to the Baltimore Ravens if the Dolphins only offer a one-year deal at league minimum.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Leach is looking for a multi-year deal but it's unknown if the Dolphins are prepared to offer such a contract. He's one of the best in the game at his position and will boost any ground game that he's added to.

MIN - WR Greg Jennings talks QB Christian Ponder

Source: NFL.com

Minnesota Vikings WR Greg Jennings said QB Christian Ponder has not had enough help around him in previous years, and that will change this year. 'He (Ponder) has always been a position where the stress and the pressure was on him, and he really didn't have the help around him to take that load off, outside of 'All Day' (Adrian Peterson). That's it,' Jennings said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's essentially a make or break year for Ponder in 2013. The team added veteran Matt Cassel in free agency and they could have a quick hook for Ponder if he struggles this year.

DET - QB Matthew Stafford wants to throw less

Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford wants to throw the ball less than the 727 times he threw the ball in 2012. The hope is the team will be able to run the ball more in the late in the game and not be forced to throw because they are behind. 'A lot of the time, we were throwing the ball because of circumstance; we were behind in games late in the game and it's tough to justify handing the ball off a lot and trying to get back into it," Stafford said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see if the Lions defense can keep them in games where they don't have to play "catch up" football. The addition of RB Reggie Bush will help their ground game, and Bush can also be dangerous as a receiver out of the backfield. If they need to grind down the play clock late then going to RBs like Joique Bell or Mikel Leshoure makes a ton of sense.

HOU - QB Matt Schaub in great shape

Source: HoustonTexans.com

Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub is in great shape and had a great offseason, according to quarterbacks coach Karl Dorrell.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Texans here. Schaub has passed for over 4,000 yards in three of the last four years. The Texans finally got a quality target to start opposite superstar Andre Johnson when they selected WR DeAndre Hopkins (Clemson) in the first-round of the 2013 NFL draft. This addition, along with solid play from TE Owen Daniels could help Schaub perform like top 12 fantasy QB in 2013.

SD - Scaling back QB Philip Rivers

Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said the team plans to simplify things for QB Philip Rivers. McCoy said Rivers gets in trouble when he tries to do too much, but it's on the entire offense to become more consistent. 'We got to get him going back to the basics,' McCoy said. 'Take what the defense gives you. Don't be afraid to check it down. You don't have to make that big play every play. We are going to do some different things in the passing game with him to raise the completion percentage, get the ball out of his hand a little bit quicker.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a smart move for the Chargers. We think Rivers could have a bounce back year in 2013 for a couple of reasons. First, McCoy is going to emphasize getting rid of the ball quickly and into the hands of playmaking WRs like Danario Alexander and Vincent Brown. Second, the team made improvements to the O-Line this offseason including (but not limited to) selecting OT D.J. Fluker in the first-round of the 2013 NFL draft. Rivers could be a value at his current ADP (QB19, 12.09 in 12 team PPR leagues).

JAX - RB Maurice Jones-Drew may be limited to start camp

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) may not go at full speed at the start of training camp, according to offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. "We have to make sure he can just not plant off his foot, but be tackled on his foot and be able to bounce right back up and be able to withstand a lot of carries," Fisch said. "When we start seeing those things, we'll have a better feel of what type of guy he can be.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Jones-Drew is likely to be the centerpiece of the offense once again if healthy. The team is going to monitor him closely as he continues to return from this foot injury.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith: no hard feelings, QB Mark Sanchez

Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

New York Jets QB Geno Smith told the OchoCinco News Network that there is no problem between QB Mark Sanchez and him. 'Me and Mark are cool. There's no hard feelings or anything.' Smith said that he has been getting work in and implied that he was scheduled to work out with some teammates, just as Sanchez had been doing. He added that he continues to prepare to be the starter and is looking forward to the competition in training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith is not attending "Jets West", the passing camp lead by Sanchez. The two will compete for the starting job in training camp with Sanchez perhaps having the edge due to his experience. If Sanchez struggles once again this year then the team could turn over the reins to Smith. Even if Smith is not the starter the Jets are considering using him as an option "change of pace" QB.

WAS - RB Roy Helu making cuts

Source: The Washington Times - Rich Campbell

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu (knee, toe) was making cuts near the end of OTAs. He's expected to be completely healthy entering the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Helu could win the primary backup job behind Alfred Morris if he can stay healthy. He's a good all-purpose back who can be effectively used as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. His main competition for the backup job could be rookie RB Chris Thompson (Florida State). Thompson is an explosive playmaker who can cut at speed on a dime. However, he's coming back from a knee injury that cut his season short last year.

DEN - Ryan Clady hopes for big year for team

Source: The Denver Post - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos OT Ryan Clady says 2013 has the potential to be a big year for the team. 'I've been working hard. ... I think this is a big year for us as a team because, you know, we're stacked," Clady said. "Definitely have a lot of expectations Super Bowl or bust for the most part. It's a lot of pressure. ... Definitely a big step with us this year.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Most teams, players, and coaches don't even like to admit there's a game called the Super Bowl, let alone talk about it. Clady joins head coach John Fox in calling 2013 "Super Bowl or bust" and we agree. The Broncos have a team which is built to make a championship run. They should easily win their division and may finish as the top seed in the AFC once again. We'll see if QB Peyton Manning and company can get it done in the postseason this year.

PHI - More on Michael Bamiro signing

Source: FOXSports.com - Mike Garafolo

Philadelphia Eagles OT Michael Bamiro has been guaranteed a portion of his base salaries for his first two seasons in part to offset the fact that he received a low signing bonus, according to a source. He was reportedly rated a fourth- to sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, but he learned that he had exhausted his eligibility at Stony Brook last season because he began attending the University of Pittsburgh in 2008 as a student only. Stony Brook appealed on his behalf for an additional season of eligibility but was denied. He was also declared ineligible for the supplemental draft, which took place last week. Former Eagles OT Tra Thomas had been training Bamiro and oversaw his workout last week in front of 22 NFL teams, several of which made strong attempts to sign him.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bamiro was a right tackle at Stony Brook and that's the position the Eagles likely want him at if he develops as a pro. First-round pick Lane Johnson will man that position now but when Jason Peters is done with the Eagles they could slide Johnson over to the left and perhaps put Bamiro in the starting lineup.

NFL - WR Laurent Robinson says he's healthy

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Free-agent WR Laurent Robinson (Jaguars) said he's symptom-free after his concussion-marred 2012. He has been running and training without issues since last week at Fit Speed in Weston, Fla., the workout facility co-founded by Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall. It was the first time Robinson went through football drills since being concussed on Nov. 18. Some teams are reportedly interested in Robinson, per his agent.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson will first need to find a doctor who will clear him before he gets another shot in the NFL. Still only 28 years old the four concussions he suffered last year are a big concern. If injuries hit in training camp we could see Robinson get a tryout.

DAL - Work out three

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Calvin Watkins

The Dallas Cowboys worked out three quarterbacks Tuesday, July 16. The team worked out QBs Kyle Padron (Eastern Washington), Chase X. Clement (Rice) and Alex Tanney (Chiefs). The team is expected to keep two quarterbacks on the active roster, QBs Tony Romo and Kyle Orton.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tanney was known for the trick shot video he made coming out of Monmouth. He was an undrafted free agent in 2012 but signed with the Chiefs last year before training camp. A finger injury had him put on Injured Reserve for the season. He was released by the Chiefs earlier this year in May.

JAX - RB Denard Robinson gets praise

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Denard Robinson was praised for progress in the offseason program by running backs coach Terry Richardson. "Denard made a lot of headway and improvement getting the nuances, terminology and the real intricacies of the position down," Richardson said. "He knows how to run the football."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson is listed as an "Offensive Weapon" on the depth chart and should line up all over the field in 2013. He'll compete in training camp with veteran Justin Forsett to be the primary backup RB behind Maurice Jones-Drew.

MIA - DE Dion Jordan contract update

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

The Miami Dolphins and DE Dion Jordan have not made progress on a new contract, and the holdup is due to offset language the team wants to include in the contract in case Jordan is a bust during the duration of the contract.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've seen this before from the Dolphins. They did the same thing last year with QB Ryan Tannehill and eventually Tannehill gave in. The offset language insures that a team isn't responsible for the remaining portion of a contract if a first-round pick is cut before his rookie deal expires.

DAL - DE DeMarcus Ware ready for new challenge

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware is ready for the new challenge of playing a different position in 2013. "I think it's another challenge of being effective at a totally different position," Ware said. "They say an outside linebacker is a defensive end just standing up, but it's not the same because you've got different ways the offense wants to sort of attack you. It's a little simpler now. It's more man on man, that brute football. It's not, I'm going to trick the guy and move the guy around to get a matchup. It's my tackle against your defensive end or my linebacker against your running back We know who's blocking who and it's up to who wants it most."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ware should be 100 percent healthy by the start of training camp. He's been held out of OTAs and minicamp as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery he had back in January. Ware has battled through injuries but has never missed a game during his pro career.
