PHI - QB Michael Vick could be roster casualty

Source: - Geoff Mosher

Eagles Insider Geoff Mosher was asked which veterans could possibly wind up being cut. He said that if Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly believes in Nick Foles and the long-term potential of Matt Barkley, Michael Vick could be cut.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of course, that's a big "if" right now. This is a QB battle that will take place during training camp. The team has former Oregon QB Dennis Dixon as fourth on the roster. If Foles wins the starting job the team will use the TEs more in the offense. If Vick wins the job then we'll see more inside zone rushing from the Eagles. We're certain some team would add him if he was on the open market.

NE - TE Rob Gronkowski making progress

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (back) is making progress in his rehab, but it is too early to say if he will be ready for the start of the regular season. Gronkowski has resumed light workouts and has made significant progress.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Patriots here. We're unlikely to see Gronkowski in training camp or the preseason but he may be ready for the start of the regular season. They may want to avoid putting Gronkowski on the PUP list to start the year.

DET - QB Matthew Stafford contract extension

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Updating a previous report, the Detroit Lions are expected to sign QB Matthew Stafford to a five year contract extension that will pay somewhere around $75 million as soon as Tuesday, July, 9.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stafford has huge upside after compiling over 10,000 passing yards over the last two seasons. He needs to stay healthy but has a bright future at only 25 years old. This contract may not lower his cap number much this year ($20.8MM) but it may significantly lower his camp number in 2014. Stafford’s new contract extension reportedly has $53MM worth of new money included in the new deal, including $43MM in guaranteed money. Stafford will be under contract with the Lions through the 2017 season.

PHI - WR spots up for grabs

Source: - Geoff Mosher

Philadelphia Eagles WRs DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant and Damaris Johnson are considered locks to make the team. One or two more spots will be filled by Riley Cooper, Arrelious Benn, Ifeanyi momah, B.J. Cunningham and Russell Shepard.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benn is a great blocker and could make the team because the Eagles should be run heavy in 2013. Shepard is a great athlete but still raw as a receiver coming out of LSU as an undrafted free agent. Cooper is tough but durability and consistency are question marks. Cunningham is a crisp route runner but offers little after the catch.

STL - QB Sam Bradford improved in red zone

Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Bernie Miklasz

St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford improved dramatically in his red-zone production as 2012 went on. In the first eight games last year, he completed just 43.3 percent of his inside-the-20 attempts with four touchdowns and two interceptions, for a 62.5 passer rating. After the team reworked the club's red-zone approach, Bradford completed 67 percent of his tosses in the red zone, logging nine touchdowns and suffering just one interception, good for a rating of 101.8.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're expecting Bradford to have his best year as a pro in 2013. This offseason the team has worked hard to add talent around their franchise QB. They picked up both LT Jake Long and TE Jared Cook in free agency. They also added WRs Tavon Austin (West Virginia) and Stedman Bailey (West Virginia) in the 2013 NFL draft. We'll see if Bradford can put it all together and outperform his ADP (QB20) this year.

DEN - Tom Heckert facing DUI charges

Source: The Associated Press

Tom Heckert, the Denver Broncos' director of pro personnel, was arrested on June 11 and charged with driving under the influence and careless driving, according to Douglas County Sheriff's Department.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This comes one day after Director of Player Personnel Matt Russell was arrested for drunk driving. The Broncos released this statement: “One member of the Broncos arrested for driving under the influence is one too many. This type of behavior puts innocent people at risk and cannot be tolerated. While our team and league supply plenty of resources to prevent these situations, it is clear we need to do better."

ARI - TE Rob Housler on the brink of breakout?

Source: - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals TE Rob Housler could have a big role in the offense this year and ranks as a breakout candidate. Head coach Bruce Arians said he saw Housler as a big receiver, potentially as opposed to a tight end, when he came out of college.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Housler is going to have a big opportunity this year. The Bruce Arians offense is all about challenging the defense vertically with a heavy dose of downfield passing. However, Carson Palmer may have to bail on those deep routes early because of the state of the Cardinals O-Line. Palmer targeted TE Brandon Myers (Giants) over 100 times last year when both were with the Raiders. We like Housler as a low end TE2 with upside.

NFL - RB Vonta Leach being patient

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Free-agent FB Vonta Leach (Ravens) is willing to keep waiting to see if another team will give him a large contract. The Miami Dolphins are interested in signing him to a low-money deal, and they remain the favorites to land him, unless another team comes out of the woods and offers him something he can't turn down.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Leach is a seasoned veteran and should find a home before the start of training camp. We love the way that he blasts open holes as a blocker and Leach is one of the best at his position. He'll improve the ground game for any team that he joins.

PHI - WR Riley Cooper on the bubble

Source: - Geoff Mosher

Philadelphia Eagles WR Riley Cooper could be in danger of being cut during training camp if he doesn't step up.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooper is a tough receiver but he needs to stay healthy and prove that he can play more consistently as a pro. He'll battle WRs like Greg Salas and B.J. Cunningham to be the team's sixth WR on the depth chart.
