NE - WR Lavelle Hawkins could return punts

New England Patriots WR Lavelle Hawkins is likely to get an opportunity to return punts in the preseason.

Unlike Donald Jones and Michael Jenkins, Hawkins actually got a small amount of guaranteed money from the Patriots, and he was also signed only a week after the Titans let him go. Jenkins has taken the early lead in the battle to line up outside, but Hawkins could sneak onto the roster if he proves to be a good punt returner. That would allow the Patriots to expose Danny Amendola to injury as a returner less frequently.

DAL - CB Morris Claiborne praised

Source: Twitter

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne was praised by head coach Jason Garrett for how far he has come along in the last year. I think hes much further along than when he showed up here last year, Garrett said last month after the Cowboys ended their OTAs. Hes a good football player, very talented. Like with all rookies, theres a lot to learn when you get here. I think hes done a good job learning from the experiences he had as a player last year.

Claiborne hasn't made the impact that the Cowboys might have hoped when they gave up their first and second round picks to move up for him last year, but we have become spoiled by instant impact rookies. He'll get tested plenty by the NFC's numerous talented cornerbacks because he lines up opposite standout coverage man Brandon Carr.

NYG - OLB Mark Herzlich wants to lead defense

Source: The Star-Ledger - Michael J. Fensom

New York Giants LB Mark Herzlich said he wants to not only get better on special teams, but he also wants to lead the defense in 2013. I want to get better at special teams at the spot I've been playing at, better technique-wise, Herzlich said. But my main goal is to break into the starting lineup on defense and lead the defense -- just bring everybody together because we've had some guys leave, some guys come and join and really create a community on the defensive side of ball where we're all having fun playing together. Because we can have fun playing if we all know what we're doing. That's, as the middle linebacker, what your role is -- to make sure everyone knows what they're doing at all times so we can go out and play fast and have fun.

The Giants defense let them down in the second half of the year, giving up over 30 points to the Bengals, Falcons, and Ravens in blowout losses. The linebacker corps is in disarray right now, but the inspirational story and leadership that Herzlich embodies could be a point to rally around for this unit.

SEA - OLB K.J. Wright working on weak side

Source: - Clare Farnsworth

Seattle Seahawks LB K.J. Wright worked on the strong side last season, but during spring practices, Wright worked on the weak side where LB LeRoy Hill had been a started the past two seasons.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could be a boost to Wright value in IDP leagues, which is only that of an LB4/Flex bye/injury player. His value has been held down more by his role in the defense than his ability, so a weakside linebacker spot that affords him more ability to roam would give Wright excellent sleeper status in deep IDP leagues.

DET - DC impressed by S Glover Quin

Source: Detroit Free Press - Carlos Monarrez

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has been impressed by the professionalism of newcomer CB Glover Quin. He mixed in well with the starters during minicamp, and he has been trying to encourage younger players in the secondary. 'He is something,' Cunningham said. 'We had a meeting the other day and I turned to (vice president of pro personnel) Sheldon White and I said, 'Quin.' He goes, 'Professional.' I said, 'That's the best description I've heard.' That's him. All about business every day.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Quin is an excellent defensive back with the ability to play a linebacker-esque role in nickel and dime packages. He also has a lot of experience as a man corner with good ball skills for the interception. He is a solid DB2 for IDP leagues.
