CIN - To use RB Giovani Bernard at receiver

Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Cincinnati Bengals running backs coach Hue Jackson preferred RB Giovani Bernard over RBs Le'Veon Bell, Montee Ball and Eddie Lacy in this year's draft because of Bernard's speed and versatility. Bernard was used as a wide receiver in spring practices, in addition to his rushing duties. 'He's so natural catching the ball. He can catch it like a receiver,' Jackson said. 'I knew he could catch it really well, but I wouldn't be surprised if he could go out there and line up outside and catch balls like some other guys can because he has that skill set.'

Bernard was one of the best pass-catching backs in the draft, so this should come as no surprise. PPR leaguers should not let him drop past the sixth round.

OAK - RB Darren McFadden putting last year behind him

Source: NFL.com

Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden is putting the 2012 season behind him and looking forward to 2013. 'There's always going to be things that gets your blood boiling,' McFadden told the Bay Area News Group in June. 'But last year was last year. It's something I put behind me. We're moving forward, and I'm looking forward to a new season.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are reasons to give McFadden a shot this year. The Raiders are moving away from the zone-blocking running game that bogged him down last year, and it is a contract year for McFadden. Perhaps he'll be more motivated to play through injuries this year. He's still on one of the worst teams in the league, and he still hasn't played more than 13 games in a season. McFadden is worth taking as your RB2 or RB3 in the third round, but he shouldn't sniff the first round ADP he had at this time last year.

CLE - Kicking competition update

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Updating a previous report, the Cleveland Browns PK competition will likely be resolved in the preseason, with the possibility the that the team could both PKs Shayne Graham and Brandon Bogotay. 'Itís been close. Itís been back and forth,' Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said of the kicking battle this spring. 'Obviously, you get into the preseason and those games and that will be a very important part of the process of the evaluation. But itís ongoing all the way through.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are fewer safe kickers this year than in any recent year. Make sure to check the Footballguys newswire before making your list of acceptable kickers this year, as many 2012 starters are going to have to fight for their jobs in camp and the preseason this year.

SF - WR Michael Crabtree begins working out

Source: Twitter

San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') said he is ready to return to the gym for his next phase in his rehab.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a good sign that he won't go on injured reserve. A four-month rehab period would put him on schedule to return around November. Even if the 49ers are extra cautious with Crabtree, he could return in time for the fantasy playoffs. It's time to think about drafting Crabtree again in league with 20 or more roster spots.

CLE - QB Brandon Weeden draws good review

Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

ESPN's quarterback evaluator Ron Jaworski believes Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden will be a solid NFL quarterback. 'For a rookie, Weeden showed uncommon poise and calm in the pocket' with 'consistently solid' mechanics, said Jaworski, who also touted the quarterback's ability to 'sit on his back foot and drive the ball with velocity.' Moving from former head coach Pat Shurmur's paint-by-numbers West Coast Offense to offensive coordinator Norv Turner's aggressive downfield passing attack should help. Weeden is more of a gunslinger, and coach Rob Chudzinski has promised to make the most of his quarterback's deep-ball ability.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jaworski tends to be ultra-positive about players, to the point of exaggeration. Weeden was not bad for a rookie last year, but his play didn't improve as the season went on, and now he's playing for a regime that did not draft him. He does have a better skillset for a downfield offense, but it's now or never for the quarterback that will turn 30 during the season.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger has earned most of his deal's money

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is expected to earn $11.6 million this season, which will give him $76.5 million of his eight-year, $102 million deal he signed in March 2008. The most any player received from a $100 million deal was former QB Donovan McNabb with $69 million.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Roethlisberger has won a Super Bowl and taken the Steelers to another one during the life of the contract, so it was worth every penny, even though there was a time that the team was reportedly looking to deal him after he brought negative publicity to the organization due to an accusation of rape in a Georgia bar. He appeared to have put that behind him now and should go down as one of the best quarterbacks of his era.

SD - RB Ryan Mathews' arrest would not have been a surprise

Source: San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee

If Ryan Mathews had been arrested for his involvement in an altercation outside of a nightclub, it would not have been "all that surprising nor disappointing", according to Kevin Acee, current columnist and long-time Chargers beat writer for the San Diego Union-Tribune. Acee called it "fairly common knowledge that Mathews is frequently out at places that serve plentiful alcohol and occasionally are host to unsavory behavior, even at times and dates that show questionable judgment".

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathews has failed to deliver on expectations that were set very high when the Chargers traded up to the 12th pick of the 2010 draft. This column gives some insight into why Mathews has disappointed, and why it is probably not a great idea to stick your neck out for him unless he presents a great value in your draft - in the sixth round at the earliest. Danny Woodhead is looking like a better sleeper pick in the 10th round or later of PPR drafts every day. Don't be surprised if the Chargers kick the tires on Willis McGahee, because head coach Mike McCoy knows him from their time together in Denver last year.

NFL - WR Titus Young no-shows again

Source: USA Today - David Leon Moore

Free-agent WR Titus Young (Rams) didn't show up for his second straight court appearance but was given an excused absence from a judge in Newport Beach, Calif. Young's lawyer, Altus W. Hudson II, says that Young hasn't appeared for his hearings in the 11-count criminal case against him because he's still undergoing treatment for concussions related to his NFL days.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Young's NFL career is likely over, but the evidence that the defense eventually presents about how his head injuries might have contributed to his crimes will be watched closely by the NFL and thousands of players that are suing the league for allegedly hiding the known risks of concussions and rushing them back onto the field.

HOU - Brian Cushing praises DE J.J. Watt

Source: ESPN.com

Houston Texans LB Brian Cushing thinks DE J.J. Watt has the potential to be one of the all-time great defensive linemen in the game. 'The things that he's going to be able to accomplish are unbelievable. When you talk about the potential that he has of really being the greatest defensive player ever, he could be. I know that's very premature but he's that kind of player,' Cushing said. Watt led the league with 20.5 sacks last year, and he also batted 16 passes down, had 81 tackles and forced four fumbles.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Considering that Watt had one of the all-time great individual defensive seasons last year, Cushing's statement almost seems obvious. He should be the first player off of the board in IDP leagues by a good margin. Even a 25% dropoff on his numbers would put him well ahead of the pack at DL/DE.
