DEN - Offensive backfield notes

Source: Colorado Springs Gazette - Paul Klee

The Denver Broncos could start RB Ronnie Hillman for Week 1, but he is expected to eventually give way to rookie RB Montee Ball, perhaps by the end of September. Veteran RB Knowshon Moreno likely will be used often, as he is the best pass-protecting running back on the team.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a feeling that has been going around Dove Valley for some time. Hillman is getting a majority of the first-team snaps this offseason. Ball was selected to be the primary back but the team won't simply hand him the starting job. We'll see if Ball can win the job over Hillman in training camp. Hillman could be their primary change of pace back behind Ball if he doesn't win the starting job.

NFL - RB Willis McGahee released because of his knee injury?

Source: Colorado Springs Gazette - Paul Klee

Paul Klee, of the Colorado Springs Gazette, believes the primary reason free-agent RB Willis McGahee (knee, Broncos) is no longer a Denver Broncos roster member is because of his health status. Broncos head coach John Fox said McGahee's decision to skip voluntary minicamp had nothing to do with the veteran's release.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team denies this is what happened. Even McGahee said that he was feeling great and was healthy when he arrived at Dove Valley for minicamp. "I'm healthy, I'm cleared. Everything is good. No problems. I can run. I've been working out when I was in Miami. I've dropped down (weight). No complaints."

PHI - WR DeSean Jackson clarifies QB comments

Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Les Bowen

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson clarified but ultimately stood behind his comments about wanting to have the Eagles' starting quarterback named before training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see how the competition unfolds during training camp. Michael Vick and Nick Foles have been working to win the starting job this offseason. Vick is a better fit for the zone read option plays that will be featured by new head coach Chip Kelly. If Foles wins the job then we'll see more use of the TEs in a more traditional offense.

NYJ - WR Santonio Holmes hopes to be ready for camp

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Santonio Holmes (foot) indicated he hopes to be ready for the start of training camp. Holmes may not be ready for camp because he has not started running or cutting yet.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Holmes may not be ready for the start of training camp as he comes back from his Lisfranc injury. He could be placed on the PUP list for training camp if he's not fully recovered. The plan is to have Holmes ready for the start of the regular season.

HOU - Coach concerned about RT situation

Source: HoustonTexans.com - Nick Scurfield

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said he is concerned about the team's situation at right tackle because OT Derek Newton (knee) and OT Brennan Williams (knee) were not able to participate in offseason workouts. 'If you look at our roster, it looks good, but the bottom line is the guys aren't out there, so that's concerning for us as a team and me as a coach,' Kubiak said. 'I love the way Newton has worked. I think he made a lot of progress as a player last year. He played hurt at the end of the year, which was tough on him and us as a team. We drafted a young man with a lot of ability (Williams). He hasn't been out here yet.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Both should be ready for the start of training camp. If both stay healthy then Kubiak's concern should subside.

CLE - WR Davone Bess could start early

Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns WR Davone Bess could start while WR Josh Gordon serves his two-game suspension.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bess is going to be the team's slot receiver behind Gordon and Greg Little this year. While he's filling in at WR2 we'll see guys like Travis Benjamin or David Nelson fill in at the WR3 spot.

MIN - WR Greg Childs not cleared yet

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Mark Craig

Minnesota Vikings WR Greg Childs (knees) has not been cleared to participate in team practices at this point and likely will not be for some time. He has been working out in the weight room and currently weighs 225 pounds. He has also been able to do some running and cutting.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Childs has interesting upside if he could ever get healthy. He's never been the same since a torn patellar tendon his junior year in college at Arkansas. Last season he suffered patellar tendon injuries to both knees and is trying to make his way back. In super deep dynasty leagues he's worth having on the end of your bench as a lottery ticket player. We'd love to see what he could do if he ever returned to form but the chances of that happening are slim.

JAX - QB Blaine Gabbert expected to start

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert is expected to be the starting quarterback Week 1 unless he performs very badly in training camp and preseason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gabbert performing badly in training camp and the preseason is not out of the question. He's been struggling in minicamp so things may not get better when the team puts shoulder pads on. Gabbert could be replaced by veteran Chad Henne as the team's starter at any time. It's a make or break season for the 2011 first-round pick and this could be his last season with the Jaguars.

JAX - Likely will keep two QBs

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to keep QBs Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne on their final roster. QBs Matt Scott and Jordan Rodgers could be options for the practice squad.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Scott is an interesting prospect to keep an eye on in super deep dynasty leagues. He's incredibly athletic and has a strong arm but struggles with accuracy and decision making. Rodgers is the younger brother of Packers superstar QB Aaron Rodgers. He's a backup caliber player who has little upside as a starter.

IND - Want to use TE Coby Fleener as vertical threat

Source: NationalFootballPost.com - Dan Pompei

The Indianapolis Colts want to use TE Coby Fleener more as a vertical threat down the seam this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An important note for fantasy owners here. Fleener is familiar with the Pep Hamilton offense from their days together at Stanford. The Colts should use both Fleener and Dwayne Allen more this season. The Hamilton offense isn't as vertical as the system used last year by former OC Bruce Arians.

IND - Believe WR Darrius Heyward-Bey can be explosive playmaker

Source: NationalFootballPost.com - Dan Pompei

The Indianapolis Colts believe WR Darrius Heyward-Bey could be an explosive playmaker this season that could get behind the defense. Heyward-Bey is expected to receive more opportunities than he received when he was with the Oakland Raiders.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Heyward-Bey has great downfield speed and can get on top of the defense in a hurry. The problem with his game is a lack of consistency and concentration. Heyward-Bey will often drop easy passes and he's known for letting too many balls hit the ground.

NYJ - WR Stephen Hill struggled during minicamp

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill struggled with drops during the team's recent minicamp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill has a good size/speed combination but is still an incredibly raw prospect. He's coming back from a knee injury and the team needs him to impress in training camp. They have an unproven group of WR Santonio Holmes, who is coming back from a Lisfranc injury.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith needs to work on calling plays in huddle

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets quarterbacks coach David Lee said QB Geno Smith needs to be more consistent with his ability to call plays in the huddle. Smith struggled with some of the calls during offseason workouts.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Learning the playbook and the terminology is key for Smith. He's competing with Mark Sanchez to be the team's starter in 2013. Smith worked primarily out of the shotgun during his time in college at West Virginia.

NYJ - RB Mike Goodson's future still uncertain

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Mike Goodson's future with the team is still uncertain because of his arrest this offseason. He could face a one-game suspension if he pleads guilty to possession of marijuana. The gun charges against him could be dropped.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The gun charges were far more severe than the drug charges. Goodson is competing with Bilal Powell to be the team's primary backup behind Chris Ivory. The legal process could drag throughout the rest of the year. The league won't hand down any sort of suspension until the courts have made a decision.

ATL - No deal with DT Richard Seymour imminent

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

Free-agent DT Richard Seymour (Raiders) said he has not been able to reach a contract agreement with the Atlanta Falcons. Seymour is still open to signing with the Falcons.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No hurry with this situation. Seymour's price might be too high for the Falcons at this time. We'll see if the two sides can come to an agreement before the start of training camp.

BUF - DE Mario Williams cautions teammates

Source: The Buffalo News - Tim Graham

Buffalo Bills DE Mario Williams warned his teammates about staying in shape in the weeks leading up to training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The time between minicamp and the start of training camp is always a dangerous time. Players can get out of shape or get in trouble off the field. We'll see if Williams' Bills teammates heed his advice.
