DEN - RB Montee Ball signs

Source: DenverBroncos.com

The Denver Broncos signed RB Montee Ball (Wisconsin) nThursday, June 13. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ball is set to take over as the Broncos lead back in 2013. When that exactly happens is anybody's guess right now. Ball has been working behind Ronnie Hillman in Broncos minicamp and is getting about 1/4 of the first-team reps. We'll see if Ball can pass Hillman on the depth chart during training camp.

ARI - RB Rashard Mendenhall clearly No. 1 back

Source: Xtra 910 Radio - Mike Jurecki

Arizona Cardinals RB Rashard Mendenhall has clearly been the top option in the backfield. He's looked good hitting holes, stable in pass protection and catching out of the backfield.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. The team is looking for one RB to be the primary ball carrier and that's looking more and more like Mendenhall. He has a history with new Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians from their days together in Pittsburgh. Mendenhall is competing with Ryan Williams to be the team's lead back. Arians has commented earlier this offseason that he's not going to use a RBBC.

NFL - RB Willis McGahee wants to play

Source: ESPN.com - Josina Anderson

Free-agent RB Willis McGahee (Broncos) said he plans to play this season. 'I will keep playing,' he said. 'I don't feel like I have to go out there and say what I have left. I know what I can do. I'm not worried about it. Once I get the opportunity, it will be all good.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McGahee isn't the same player he used to be but has more left in the tank than other veteran free agents like Cedric Benson or Michael Turner. We could see teams like the Chargers or Cowboys show interest in McGahee.

DEN - Not looking to re-sign RB Willis McGahee

Source: ESPN.com - Josina Anderson

Free-agent RB Willis McGahee (Broncos) said the Denver Broncos did not ask him to re-sign with them at a lower salary.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos are moving on with a younger group of RBs. Rookie Montee Ball (Wisconsin) is not being brought along slowly and will be given every opportunity to win the starting job. He's currently getting a small slice (about 25%) of first-team reps behind second-year back Ronnie Hillman. We'll see if Ball can seize the starting job in training camp.

SF - WR Austin Collie works out

Source: USA Today - Mike Garafolo

The San Francisco 49ers are working out WR Austin Collie (Colts) Thursday, June 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Collie (knee) may not be cleared to resume football activities until October but has been getting some interest in the last week. He is trying to make a comeback from a ruptured right patella tendon. Collie has a long concussion history that also clouds his NFL future.

TEN - Coach sets QB depth chart

Source: TitansInsider.com - Terry McCormick

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said QB Jake Locker is his quarterback and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is strictly the backup and knows his role on the team.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. It's a make or break season for Locker in 2013. He has to prove that he can be consistent enough to be relied on as a starter. Locker also has to stay healthy so that he can play up to the potential franchise QB level the team saw in him when they selected him in the first-round of the 2011 NFL draft.

SD - RB Ryan Mathews says he's been average, makes changes

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said he's 'been just an average back.' After bulking up last year in an effort to absorb hits more effectively, he has leaned out this year while also incorporating different stretches to stay flexible. Mathews is also studying more, specifically changing and working on understanding his blocking technique.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathews is right, his NFL career has been a disappointment. This was the guy drafted to be the replacement for future Hall of Fame RB LaDainian Tomlinson and he's played more like Rod Bernstein. We'll see if Mathews can stay healthy, keep his confidence up, and play up to his potential in 2013.

DAL - RB DeMarco Murray says he's ready

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (hamstring) said he feels like he's 'back where [he needs] to be' and is expected to participate in minicamp workouts Thursday, June 13. He missed the first few organized team activities back in May because of a slight hamstring strain.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray needs to stay healthy through training camp to give the team confidence he can make it through the season unscathed. He's a talented runner but durability issues have held him back through his pro career. The team has rookie Joseph Randle (Oklahoma State) as his primary backup.

CAR - Wide receiver notes

Source: ESPN.com - Pat Yasinskas

Carolina Panthers WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are locked in at the top two spots. Ted Ginn Jr. has stood out during minicamp, catching several deep passes from Cam Newton. Armanti Edwards looks more comfortable playing the position. Ginn and Edwards will compete with Kealoha Pilares, Joe Adams and David Gettis for roster spots and reps.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith should be the star receiver he's been for years in 2013. His current ADP is WR28 (6.08) which makes him a good value. The bigger question mark is LaFell. He's got the size/speed combination to be an effective pro but has lacked consistency to his game. LaFell's current ADP is WR69 and he's coming off the board at 14.10 in 12 team PPR leagues.

CAR - RB Kenjon Barner looks explosive

Source: ESPN.com - Pat Yasinskas

Carolina Panthers RB Kenjon Barner has looked explosive and fast in practice. They might figure out how to get the rookie into the backfield mix.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Barner was explosive on film at Oregon and showed that ability during the week of practice for the Senior Bowl earlier this year. He doesn't have the frame to add more weight and lacks the size to be anything more than a change of pace back. He's currently buried on the depth chart behind Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart might not be ready

Source: ESPN.com - Pat Yasinskas

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) may not be ready for the start of training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

More injury woes with Stewart here. He's so talented but durability has held him back during his pro career. Stewart could begin training camp on the PUP list if he's not ready to practice. This leads to more opportunity for DeAngelo Williams and rookie Kenjon Barner (Oregon).

DAL - QB Tony Romo throwing

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Carlos A. Mendez

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) was throwing a little bit to WR Miles Austin from about 10 yards Thursday, June 13. He looked healthy.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Cowboys here. Romo is recovery from surgery to have a cyst removed from his back and should be ready for the start of training camp.

JAX - WR Justin Blackmon sitting out

Source: The Associated Press - Mark Long

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon (groin) is sitting out the final day of minicamp Thursday, June 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Blackmon is facing a four game suspension at the start of the regular season. He'll be able to participate with the team through training camp and play in the preseason games.

MIA - RB Daniel Thomas seeing some first-team reps

Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel - Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller has spent all of camp as the starting running back, but RB Daniel Thomas has seen a few first-team repetitions.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That may be a sign of where Thomas is at in the competition behind Miller. Thomas is competing with rookie Mike Gillislee (Florida) to be the primary backup in 2013. He's struggled to impress during his pro career and some see 2013 as a make or break season for Thomas.

JAX - QB Mike Kafka has chance to win QB job

Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said Mike Kafka has 'just as good an opportunity' to win the starting QB jon as Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne or undrafted rookie Matt Scott. Caldwell had considered signing Kafka earlier in the offseason. The New England Patriots signed him but cut Kafka when they signed Tim Tebow.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That tells you a lot about the state of the QBs in Jacksonville. Gabbert is in a make or break year yet all we're hearing is about how bad he looks at OTAs. We'll see how this QB competition plays out in training camp. We won't be surprised to see Chad Henne open the year as the starter for the Jaguars.

SD - WR Robert Meachem has some hope to improve

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee

San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem is still buried on the depth chart, but this new offense gives him a shot to produce more than he did last year.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Meachem was a disappointment (along with Eddie Royal) as a free agent addition last year. He's always been inconsistent during his pro career and that didn't change in 2012. The new system may be more friendly but we're not counting on him to make much of a fantasy impact behind Danario Alexander, Vincent Brown, Eddie Royal, and Malcom Floyd.

DAL - RB Joseph Randle to have cast taken off

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Calvin Watkins

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle (thumb) said he will get the cast taken off his thumb next week. He said he will wear a small brace on his thumb when training camp begins.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Randle is a big play back with good speed and acceleration through the hole. He's set to be the primary backup behind Demarco Murray. With Murray's durability history then we could see Randle get a few starts in 2013.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery limited in practice

Source: Chicago Tribune - Brad Biggs

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) appeared to be limited in practice Thursday, June 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This has been the case with Jeffery this week. There's no need to rush him back at this point. Jeffery is set for a bigger role this season as the WR2 starting opposite Brandon Marshall.

CHI - WR Brandon Marshall misses practice

Source: Chicago Tribune - Brad Biggs

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall (hip) did not participate in practice Thursday, June 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall has dealt with hip injuries throughout his entire pro career. He should be more than ready to go by the start of training camp.

PIT - QB Landry Jones signed

Source: NFL.com

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed fourth-round draft choice QB Landry Jones (Oklahoma) to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is an interesting developmental QB to keep an eye on. His college career was marred by inconsistent play but he has the tools to be a quality NFL starter. Jones is big, has a good arm, and isn't afraid to challenge the edges of a defense. We'll see how he can develop as a third-string QB behind Ben Roethlisberger and Bruce Gradkowski.

BAL - TE Ed Dickson sits out practices

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens TE Ed Dickson (groin) has not participated in practice the last two days because of a groin injury. The injury is not considered serious.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We should see more from Dickson this season provided he can stay healthy. The team is set to use more two TE sets now that they've traded away WR Anquan Boldin. This means more work for lead TE Dennis Pitta as well.
