NE - Stevan Ridley bulks up

Source: NESN.com - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots RB Stevan Ridley has added a 'noticeable amount of muscle' this offseason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots want Ridley to be able to dish out even more punishment this year. He finished as the 10th best RB in fantasy football last year after rushing for over 1,200 yards with 12 TDs. Those numbers could dip slightly if the team starts using guys like Shane Vereen, LeGarrette Blount, or Brandon Bolden more.

DEN - Rookie RB Ball Can Run Outside Effectively

Source: Cecil Lammey - ESPN Denver and Footballguys.com

Broncos rookie RB Montee Ball is known as a workhorse back after compiling 983 touches at Wisconsin. However, he's more than just a between the tackles banger. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry outside the tackles in 2012. Ball gained 36.1% of his FBS-leading 3,750 yards on rushes outside of the tackles over the last two seasons.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ball is likely to be the Broncos lead back in 2013. With new OC Adam Gase using more outside zone stretch run plays we could see a lot of Ball in the open field. John Fox has an interesting history with rookie RBs so monitor this situation closely in training camp.

PIT - Rookie RB Bell Gets Big Yards After Contact

Source: Cecil Lammey - ESPN Denver and Footballguys.com

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie RB Le'Veon Bell is known for getting big yards after contact. In fact, last year he lead all AQ runners with 921 yards after contact. Montee Ball (Broncos) was second with 887, and Jonathan Franklin (Packers) was fourth with 765.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Steelers need a punishing runner who can be the workhorse they've been missing for years. Bell has the size (6'2" 230) to be a grinder, but also has the athleticism to be effective in the open field. He should be the Steelers lead RB in 2013.

TB - PK Nate Kaeding retiring

Source: Iowa City Press-Citizen - Pat Harty

Tampa Bay Buccaneers PK Nate Kaeding (groin) has decided to retire from professional football after suffering a groin injury a few days ago. 'It's not like I can switch the way I kick, or change this way, or use a different muscle,' Kaeding said. 'Especially for me, and the way I kick, that's the main lever in the kicking motion. It's impossible to avoid it and I've got these chronic issues.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hats off to Kaeding for a nice career. He's still young at 31 and hopefully has a lot of success still in front of him.

NYJ - Character issues for Geno Smith?

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Jason Cole

New York Jets QB Geno Smith reportedly fell in the NFL Draft because teams are concerned he does not listen to coaches and does not take constructive criticism well. 'His biggest problem is that he doesn't know what he doesn't know,' said a league executive, who spent extensive time assessing Smith before the draft. 'I'm not sure he knows how to take instruction because he pretty much wouldn't listen or talk to our coaches he's talented. He can sling it, he can fit it into tight spots, he can do a lot of things and I think he wants to be good. But you can't tell him anything right now. He's tuned out because he thinks he's got it all down.' Two sources also indicated that when Smith went on some visits to teams, rather than interact with coaches and front-office people, he would spend much of his time on his cell phone, texting friends or reading Twitter. 'All these other players who were in there were talking to the coaches, trying to get to know people and he was over there by himself,' one of the sources said. 'That's not what you want out of your quarterback.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

These perceived character issues started to get more notice at the Scouting Combine. During his media interview Smith seemed a little flippant and was deflecting blame for last year's second half collapse at West Virginia. Now that he fell to the second-round perhaps Smith will understand what he needs to do in order to be an effective pro.

GB - Eddie Lacy ready to go

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tyler Dunne

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (toe) said he is ready to go and will be 100 percent entering camp. Teams shied away from drafting him early in the draft due to a toe fusion surgery.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Packers haven't had a 100-yard rusher in last 43 regular-season games (more than twice as long as any other active streak in NFL) but they're hoping Lacy can fix that. He's a big back with good footwork, a wicked spin move, and the power to run over defenders instantly. Lacy averaged 7.6 yards per carry between the tackles with about one in every four attempts going for at least 10 yards. That number rose to 8.7 yards per carry when facing seven or fewer in the box.

OAK - Latavius Murray known for stiff arm

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray will battle for a roster spot in training camp and the preseason, and he is viewed as one to watch since the team had injuries problems at the position a season ago. He said he thinks he runs like teammate RB Darren McFadden, as well as Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, and he uses his power and strength with an upright running style. Murray likes to embarrass defenders with his stiff-arm, or 'The Tave' arm, as his UCF teammates called it.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray is an impressive player because of his size and physicality. He is a swift runner who is difficult to bring down once he gets a head of steam. Murray should be the primary backup behind starter Darren McFadden this year. That means he'll likely see playing time as McFadden hasn't played more than 13 games in a season during his career.

OAK - Tyler Wilson highly regarded

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie likes the ability of QB Tyler Wilson to 'move around the pocket and toughness to hang in there and see the field.' Wilson isn't expected to initially compete for the starting job, or even the primary backup job to either QBs Matt Flynn or Terrelle Pryor, but he could eventually start at some point down the round. 'I want him to learn the playbook first,' McKenzie said, 'make sure he gets behind the center and not the guard.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wilson was the number one QB in this class for both Cecil Lammey and Matt Waldman. He's got some Brett Favre to his game as Wilson is a gunslinger who isn't afraid to stand in and take a hit. Wilson loves to challenge defenses downfield but sometimes forces passes when he should check down. We'll see how quickly this talented rookie can compete for the starting job.

SF - WR Mario Manningham not expected to be ready

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers WR Mario Manningham (knee) is not expected to be ready for training camp. He continues to recover after suffering tears to the anterior cruciate and posterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee in a late-season game against the Seattle Seahawks.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a chance Manningham will begin the season on the PUP list. This would give the team an additional six weeks to see how Manningham recovers.

CAR - Cutting RB DeAngelo Williams will free cap space

Source: NFL Trade Rumors

The Carolina Panthers could save $3.4 million in cap space if they designated RB DeAngelo Williams a post-June 1 cut. That would also add a significant amount of dead money on the 2014 salary cap.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams could be cut after June 1st because of his $8.2MM cap number. They could put him on the trade block but may find takers thin since Williams has durability concerns. The Broncos could have had interest in Williams but they added Montee Ball in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft.

IND - WR Reggie Wayne wants another 1,000-yard season

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Mike Chappell

Indianapolis Colts WR Reggie Wayne said he is motivated by the thought of recording a 1,000-yard campaign as a 35-year-old in 2013. The 1,000-yard mark has been reached only 16 times by 12 players 35 years or older. Wayne will turn 35 in November. 'That's what fuels me, motivates me. Not everybody can do that,' Wayne said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wayne didn't miss a beat last year. In fact, he finished with a career best 106 receptions and 1,355 receiving yards. The new Colts offense is ran by former Stanford OC Pep Hamilton who worked with QB Andrew Luck in college. This won't be a vertical passing offense like it was with former OC Bruce Arians. However, it will be a very efficient offense built around Luck's strengths. Surpassing 1,000 yards receiving shouldn't be a problem for Wayne in 2013.

SF - Quinton Patton impresses coach early

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton, selected in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, is in the mix for the No. 3 wide receiver job, and he has already stood out to head coach Jim Harbaugh. 'The way he competes for the football, I would say stands out to me in my mind. The way he competes throughout the entire route. And then when the ball's up in the air, he goes up with the mindset that he's competing for the ball and that's his ball.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a lot to like about Patton's game. He had 104 catches last year and carried the Louisiana Tech offense. Patton has good acceleration and can eat up cushions quickly. He'll get open frequently, has strong hands, and good ball tracking ability when following deep passes.

NYG - RB Tim Hightower finishes visit and physical

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

Free-agent RB Tim Hightower (Redskins) completed his visit and physical with the team Thursday, May 2.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There is no word on if he will sign with the team or return for a camp tryout next weekend. Hightower is a savvy veteran who can contribute as a runner or receiver out of the backfield.

NYJ - QB David Garrard ready to compete

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Matt Ehalt

New York Jets QB David Garrard is ready to compete for the starting job, and is not there just to collect a check. 'I'm healthy now and I'm going to be going after it. I'm not here collecting paychecks,' Garrard said Thursday afternoon. 'That's not what I'm about. I'm definitely healthy and I definitely want to get out there. I want to be the guy but I can't talk about it. I gotta get on the field and do it.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Garrard is likely to be the team's third QB behind Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez to enter training camp. We'll see if he can climb the depth chart, or if he'll be bumped up automatically if the team decides to cut Sanchez.

BAL - Agree to terms with Bryant McKinnie

Source: BaltimoreRavens.com

The Baltimore Ravens have reached an agreement in principle with OT Bryant McKinnie Thursday, April 2. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McKinnie stays with the Ravens and will be their starting left tackle. He had contract offers from the Dolphins and the Chargers but decided on Baltimore instead. This gives the Ravens consistency on the offensive line and another great move by GM Ozzie Newsome.

DET - RB Joique Bell interested in being returner

Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell said he has talked with special teams coach John Bonamego about the possibility of becoming the team's full-time kick returner this season. RB Theo Riddick, WR Corey Fuller and CB Darius Slay could also be candidates for the return job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell is a big back but has good acceleration and gets to top speed in a hurry. His touches as a running back took a serious hit when the Lions added Reggie Bush in free agency earlier this offseason.

NFL - Tim Tebow would like to go where he could learn

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Jason Cole

Free-agent QB Tim Tebow would like to go to a place where he could sit behind a great starting quarterback and good coach and learn.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots could be a team that welcomes Tebow to the roster. OC Josh McDaniels was responsible for drafting Tebow in the first-round of the 2010 NFL draft. Head coach Bill Belichick has always had an admiration for Tebow and would be creative enough to use him. There would be zero QB controversy if Tebow was behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett.

DAL - Rookie WR Williams a Deep Threat

Source: Cecil Lammey - ESPN Denver and Footballguys.com

Dallas Cowboys rookie WR Terrance Williams was one of the biggest deep threats in this draft class. Since the start of the 2011 season, Williams has 39 receptions and 17 TDs on passes 20 yards or more downfield. Both numbers lead the FBS.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys didn't have a great draft, but the addition of Williams is a solid one. Some in the scouting community have compared Williams to Torrey Smith (Ravens) because of his speed and ball tracking ability. He'll be WR3 for the Cowboys behind Miles Austin and Dez Bryant in 2013. However, someday soon he'll be starting opposite Bryant.

NYJ - QB Mark Sanchez not concerned with fans

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez said he is not concerned with what fans are thinking about him. 'There's not enough hours in the day to worry about what fans are saying, what the media is saying, if this is my last chance,' Sanchez said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanchez needs to stop being the Stuart Smalley of the NFL and play with more confidence. If he's able to do that then perhaps he'll be able to hold off rookie Geno Smith for the starting job.

ATL - QB Matt Ryan could have extension by training camp

Source: ESPN.com - Pat Yasinskas

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan reportedly could sign a contract extension by the start of training camp. The Falcons want to retain Ryan for the long term and he wants to stay in Atlanta. The parameters are in place for a potential Ryan extension after Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco both inked new deals.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're certain an extension will be agreed upon in the near future. Ryan will be locked down with a number similar to what Rodgers and Flacco received from their teams. We could see movement on this deal after the teams gets all of their draft picks signed.
