PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger had knee surgery

Source: ESPN

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (knee) had minor surgery on his right knee Wednesday, June 5, and is expected to be healthy for the start of training camp. It was reported that Roethlisberger could have played with the injured meniscus in his right knee, but doctors recommended he have the surgery.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The procedure was done to alleviate some minor discomfort that Roethlisberger was experiencing in his knee. This is not going to affect his long-term health and he should be ready to go by the start of training camp.

CLE - RB Trent Richardson expects to be ready for camp

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson (leg) said he expects to be ready for the start of training camp and is sitting out the team's minicamp this week as a precaution. He said he would be able to play in a game this weekend if the team had one.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson described his shin injury earlier by saying 'ain't no biggie.' Well, the team didn't necessarily agree with that and have shut down the second-year runner until training camp. The team is worried this injury could worsen and turn into a stress fracture and are being cautious. Richardson has the natural ability to be a top 5 fantasy RB if he can get (and stay) healthy. Fantasy owners should not overreact to this injury but monitor Richardson's progress when training camp opens up.

DAL - QB Tony Romo not expected to take part in minicamp

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Calvin Watkins

Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said QB Tony Romo (back) likely will not take part in the team's upcoming minicamp because the team wants to be cautious with Romo. Jones said Romo's rehab is going well and that Romo has been doing conditioning drills to stay in shape.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. When Romo had the cyst removed from his back the team knew he was going to be out until training camp. He should be ready to go by the time we get to August. In the meantime backup Kyle Orton will get the first-team reps at OTAs.

PHI - No QB depth chart yet

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Zach Berman

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has asked for a moratorium on depth chart questions, especially at quarterback, because nothing is finalized. Michael Vick and Nick Foles have each taken first-team snaps at OTAs for a substantial period. Foles said his consistency and comfort in Kelly's system has improved since last week. Vick talked about how 'innovative' Kelly's offense is.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Both QBs are decent fits (but not perfect) for the inside zone read system that Kelly's offense is based on. Vick is athletic enough to hold DEs on an option play. However, he holds onto the ball too long as a passer which is a big 'no-no' in this scheme. Foles is arguably a better passer than Vick but lacks the athleticism to be a threat on an option play. That won't hold the pass rusher on the end which negates the effectiveness of the inside (or outside) zone read.

GB - WR Randall Cobb's primary focus will be offense

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Lori Nickel

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said WR Randall Cobb will focus primarily on offense this season, and his special teams participation will depend on the other players on the team. McCarthy said he hopes other players will be able to fill Cobb's role on special teams.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's the smart move for the Packers. Cobb is an incredible weapon the team needs to feature as a pass catcher. They need to keep him healthy and fresh, so cutting into his time on special teams was the logical answer.

NYJ - Not close to naming starting QB

Source: New York Daily News - Seth Walder

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the team is not close to naming a starting quarterback. 'I don't think we're close to that right now,' Ryan said. 'The process is, you don't have to make that move. But until we feel 100 percent comfortable with that decision, then we'll just leave it to competition.' Ryan did not say if QB Mark Sanchez or QB Geno Smith has an edge in the competition.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd be surprised if Smith doesn't win the starting job. Sanchez says he has his confidence back yet has been struggling through OTAs this offseason. The team could see Smith as the future and Ryan may need to hitch his wagon to the rookie if he wants to keep his job. It's a make or break season for Ryan. He needs to get the Jets back on track as he's clearly on the hot seat this year.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald learning three spots

Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald is working in the 'X', 'Z' and 'F' positions at receiver. Fitzgerald is spending his nights studying each position for tests the following day.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fitzgerald can do it all, and this year he's going to prove that. The 'X' receiver is a split end who lines up on the ball and furthest away from the center. The 'Z' receiver is a flanker who lines up off the ball and generally on the same side as the tight end. The 'F' position is a flex receiver who mostly lines up inside the 'Z' receiver and can work short routes both inside and out.

MIN - QB Jeff George to mentor QB Christian Ponder?

Source: 1500ESPN.com - Tom Pelissero

Former NFL QB Jeff George is in camp with the Minnesota Vikings as a guest instructor and mentor to QB Christian Ponder. 'We told our players just to be able to pick his brain, our quarterbacks, and talk with him about some of the things he saw as a young quarterback and what he saw as a veteran and just his maturation over the course of his career,' head coach Leslie Frazier said. 'He was a very good player for a long time, high draft pick, and I think he can really help our players with some of his background and his knowledge as well.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

George was known for his strong arm and attitude during his time in the NFL. We'll see if this coaching can help Ponder play up to his potential in 2013. It's a make or break year for Ponder who needs to be more than just a safe QB. He has to show the ability to make plays from the pocket and challenge edges downfield.

- Jeff Garcia thinks QB JaMarcus Russell ready for comeback

Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Former NFL QB Jeff Garcia said he believes free-agent QB JaMarcus Russell (Raiders) is physically and mentally prepared to play in the NFL again. Garcia has been working with Russell and that Russell still has the physical tools to play but needed to improve on the mental aspect of his game. 'Mentally, was the state where we needed to get him back to thinking football, speaking football, knowing football, being a student of the game. I don't know if that's ever been part of his background, to be a student of the game. That's where he needs to get to. He needs to sleep, eat, drink football. It can't be anything else if he wants this bad enough,' Garcia said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Garcia has been working with Russell at T.E.S.T. West in California as he prepares for his comeback. The 2007 number one overall pick has been out of football since 2009. He's currently drawing interest from the Bears and the Ravens. With his rocket arm there is bound to be some team willing to bring him in for camp.

TEN - RB Chris Johnson thinks he can get 2,000 yards again

Source: ESPN.com

Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson said he believes he can rush for 2,000 yards in a season again. 'I know I have another 2,000-yard season in me,' Johnson said Tuesday during the interview. 'I would love to get 2,000 yards again, but I haven't been to the playoffs since my rookie year. I want to get back there.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We love the confidence here and Johnson could have a bounce back season in 2013. However, no RB in NFL history has rushed for 2,000 yards more than once. In fact, only seven backs have hit that mark. Johnson is feeling good under new RBs coach Sylvester Croom and may be able to outperform his draft position. His current ADP is RB14 but may be slightly higher in PPR leagues. Johnson will lose touches to backup Shonn Greene this year but is expected to be more involved as a receiver out of the backfield in 2013.

DAL - RB Joseph Randle will get cast removed soon

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle (thumb) said Wednesday, June 5, that he expects to have his cast removed in two weeks and should be a full participant in training camp in July. 'I'm ready to get it off,' Randle said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Randle (Oklahoma State) was drafted in the fifth-round of the 2013 NFL draft to be the primary backup behind Demarco Murray. He's a speed back who accelerates quickly. Randle is not overly creative or elusive and relies on his speed to beat angles. With Murray's injury history we could see Randle get a few starts in 2013.

CLE - TE Jordan Cameron appeared to suffer injury

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns TE Jordan Cameron (hamstring) appeared to injure his left hamstring during practice Wednesday, June 5. He had his left leg wrapped after the injury occurred and sat out the rest of the practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the Browns here. Cameron is a former basketball star from USC who has been waiting since 2011 for his opportunity with the Browns. He's set to be the team's starter this year if healthy and could be productive under new OC Norv Turner. Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not properly cared for so expect the Browns to take it easy on Cameron and not rush him back.

SEA - WR Percy Harvin sits out

Source: Everett Herald - John Boyle

Seattle Seahawks WR Percy Harvin (hip) did not participate in practice Wednesday, June 5, because of a sore hip flexor.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks are going to be careful with their superstar WR. If healthy Harvin can be a top 10 fantasy WR in 2013 and is an every week starter. His current ADP is WR7 and he's coming off the board at 3.04 in non-PPR leagues. Bump those numbers up a bit if you play in a PPR league.

SD - D.J. Fluker agrees to terms

Source: NFL Network - Kim Jones

The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with first-round draft choice OT D.J. Fluker (Alabama) on a four-year deal worth $11.4 million. The deal includes a $6.6 million signing bonus.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fluker was added in the first-round of the 2013 NFL draft to start at right tackle. He's known as a mauler who can flatten defenders when run blocking. Fluker does okay against edge rushers but struggles with secondary moves. The Chargers get a quality right tackle in Fluker and upgrade their O-Line in the process.

KC - Owner excited about season

Source: The Kansas City Star - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said he is excited about the season because of head coach Andy Reid and how the team has looked during offseason workouts. 'I always have high expectations, but you try to temper those expectations,' Hunt said. 'We do have a new staff. We have a lot of new players. I don't know how quickly it will come together once we get to September. But I'm very excited about what I've seen this spring.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hunt is one of the best owners in the game. He made the moves this offseason to put the Chiefs back on the right track. Some feel they may push for a Wild Card spot behind the Broncos in the AFC West this year.

NYJ - WR Santonio Holmes could start camp on PUP list

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said there is a chance that WR Santonio Holmes (foot) could start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team has to be cautious with Holmes as he comes back from this Lisfranc injury. They have an inexperienced group of receivers and second-year WR Stephen Hill is still dealing with knee soreness. The plan is to have Holmes ready to go by the start of the regular season.

MIN - WR Joe Webb working as returner

Source: 1500ESPN.com - Tom Pelissero

Minnesota Vikings WR Joe Webb was working as a punt returner during organized team activities Wednesday, June 5. Webb was getting extra instruction from special teams coach Mike Priefer during the workout.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Webb has converted from QB to WR this offseason and the team is looking for ways to get his elite athleticism on the field. It makes sense for them to try him as a return man because of his size and elusiveness in the open field.

CLE - OLB Barkevious Mingo wants to start

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns LB Barkevious Mingo said his goal is to win one of the starting outside linebacker jobs this season but knows it will be hard for him to outperform LB Paul Kruger or LB Jabaal Sheard. 'I'm very determined,' Mingo said. 'That's the goal. That should be everybody's goal. You want to play, you want to help the team win, but you've got to put in the work.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mingo is a freakish athlete with high upside. He may not get into the starting lineup this year but he's got the ability to be an impact player as a part time pass rusher. Mingo has the strength to beat blocks, and the length to chew up ground in a hurry. With good first step explosion he can bend around the edge to get to the QB.

SEA - DE Chris Clemons could be ready for Week 1

Source: Everett Herald - John Boyle

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said DE Chris Clemons (knee) is well ahead of schedule in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and that Clemons could be ready for the start of the regular season. Carroll said the team will not rush Clemons back on the field.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting Clemons back gives them yet another quality pass rusher. The team added Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril in free agency this offseason. They will also have second-year DE Bruce Irvin back on the field after he serves a four game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

TB - CB Darrelle Revis making progress

Source: The Associated Press

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis (knee) said he has made progress in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament but will not say if he thinks his knee is close to 100 percent. 'I cannot really put a number on it,' Revis said. 'I can tell it is getting stronger. ... I am out here running and cutting. Even in the weight room we are getting stronger. There is really no percentage on it right now, but I can tell I feel better than I did a couple weeks ago.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Revis said he expects to play at the same level he did before the injury. He should be ready by the start of the regular season.
