NYG - Slow progress in talks with Victor Cruz

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

The New York Giants are making slow progress in contract talks with restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz on a long-term contract. The two sides are expected to resume negotiations this week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team wanted to get something done before OTAs but that doesn't look like it's going to happen. We're not too concerned by this situation unless it lasts until training camp. Even in that scenario we don't see Cruz missing any time in the regular season.

CLE - Two TEs work on first team

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns TEs Jordan Cameron and Kellen Davis have each worked with the first-team offense during drills at organized team activities (OTAs) this week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cameron is the interesting player to watch here. The former basketball star at USC has some Jimmy Graham (Saints) to his game but has failed to live up to the hype so far as a pro. That could change under new OC Norv Turner. It was Turner who featured Antonio Gates in his offense with the Chargers. Cameron's current ADP is TE21 and he's coming off the board at the end of round 13.

CLE - Brandon Weeden confident in WR

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden indicated that he and WR Josh Gordon are jelling nicely at organized team activities (OTAs). 'I have so much confidence in him. I'm not afraid to throw at any corner with him,' Weeden said. 'He's that good.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Weeden and Gordon could make a nice combination in the Norv Turner offense. Gordon has been working on his route running and should be a more complete WR in 2013. Weeden needs to endear himself to the front office and his big arm should be a good fit for the vertical Turner system.

CLE - Four QBs expected to go to camp

Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

The Cleveland Browns are expected to take QBs Brandon Weeden, Jason Campbell, Brian Hoyer and Thaddeus Lewis to training camp this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Weeden is considered the favorite to start but he'll have to beat out Campbell for the job in training camp. Hoyer will compete to be the team's primary backup behind whoever wins the starting job.

NFL - Titus Young dealing with mental issues

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions LB Stephen Tulloch said he was with free-agent WR Titus Young (Rams) on an airplane and that Young showed him a document that explained the mental disorder Young is dealing with. 'Heís aware of the situation that heís dealing with and he showed me a paper and we went over it and I looked over it, and I understand it,' Tulloch said. 'A lot of people laugh about it and ke-ke-ke about it, but itís real. He has head issues, and the Titus Young when he came in as a rookie and the Titus Young now is two different people. Itís kind of like when you look at him, heís looking through you. Itís different. You can tell thereís something going on in his mind, in his head, and I hope that he can get help.' Tulloch has contacted the NFL to see if they can help Young with his situation.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're hoping Young gets the help he needs here. It's beyond his football career (which may be over), he needs to get his life back on track.

CLE - Brandon Weeden surprised by QB addition

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden said he was surprised with the team's signing of QB Brian Hoyer but understands it is a part of the business. 'I was surprised, but that's the nature of the beast,' Weeden said. 'It's part of this business and if you start worrying about it, that's too much to worry about. That's my mentality going forward.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Weeden shouldn't be surprised by it. The front office has their doubts about him and will look for competition anywhere they can find it. Hoyer isn't a starting caliber QB and should only compete to be the primary backup behind Weeden or Jason Campbell.

NYJ - Teammate does not think RB Mike Goodson will stay

Source: New York Daily News - Seth Walder

New York Jets OG Willie Colon said he does not think RB Mike Goodson will remain with the team after being arrested earlier this week. 'It's one of the things where it's zero-tolerance with stuff like that,' Colon said. 'It's sad. Mike could have been huge for us.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Colon is getting a little ahead of himself here. We wouldn't be surprised if Goodson was cut by the Jets but he was guaranteed $2MM and that price tag could keep him on the roster. Goodson could get jail time and a suspension is also looming for the veteran back.

MIA - Two expected to compete for No. 3 WR job

Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel - Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins WRs Brandon Gibson and Armon Binns are expected to compete for the No. 3 wide receiver job during offseason workouts and training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Gibson in this battle here. Binns has good size but lacks the concentration and explosion that Gibson has. Gibson has the ability to be effective as a red zone target because of his wingspan and strong hands.

DEN - Several linemen will sit out workouts

Source: The Denver Post - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos C J.D. Walton (ankle), OG Chris Kuper (ankle) and OT Ryan Clady (shoulder) will not participate in organized team activities next week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Clady should be ready by the start of training camp. The team needs him to protect Peyton Manning's blind side in 2013. Walton should be ready by August as well, but may have to compete with Phillip Blake for the starting job in camp.

PHI - WR Jason Avant works with defense

Source: CSNPhilly.com - Geoff Mosher

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jason Avant saw some time as a defensive back during organized team activities this week. Avant does not believe his work with the defense clouds his future with the team.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Avant is battling for a roster spot at the end of the WR corps. Working on defensive back isn't a great sign for his security on the depth chart. Chip Kelly had TE Clay Harbor working on defense (OLB) too.

SD - Coach thinks OLB Dwight Freeney fits defense

Source: Chargers.com - Ricky Henne

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said he believes DE Dwight Freeney will be a perfect fit for the team's defense because of his pass-rush ability.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We wouldn't call Freeney a 'perfect' fit at all. He struggled in a 3-4 defense last year with the Colts and will play in a 3-4 with the Chargers this season. The Chargers are saying they'll be creative with the way they use Freeney to play to his strengths.

SD - OLB Dwight Freeney agrees to terms

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with free-agent DE Dwight Freeney (Colts) on a two-year deal. Reports say it's a two-year deal worth $8.75 million. The deal could be worth as much as $13.35 million because of incentives in the contract that are tied to sacks.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. The Chargers needed to strengthen their pass rush after losing Melvin Ingram to a knee injury earlier this week. Freeney struggled to impress in a 3-4 defense last year and only recorded five sacks on the season. Many expected him to return to a 4-3 where he would be more comfortable but that's not the case. The Chargers run a 3-4 under John Pagano (Colts head coach Chuck Pagano's brother) and they've hinted they would tinker with the defense to better fit Freeney's skill set.
