NE - TE Rob Gronkowski to undergo surgery soon

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (forearm) is scheduled to undergo surgery Monday, May 20. He underwent X-rays on his forearm Wednesday, May 15, and had his forearm examined. Doctors will see if the infection is still in Gronkowski's forearm. The team expects Gronkowski to be ready for training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the fourth surgery on Gronkowski's forearm. If there's an infection then Gronkowski would need a fifth procedure. If that happens then his availability for the beginning of the regular season would be in jeopardy.

KC - Jonathan Baldwin seems to be top choice for No. 2 WR job

Source: The Kansas City Star - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jonathan Baldwin appears to be the favorite for the No. 2 wide receiver job at this point but has not emerged as the dominant offseason player like he was last offseason. WRs Donnie Avery, Dexter McCluster and Terrance Copper are also expected to be candidates for the job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Baldwin has the skill set to be a top 32 WR in the game today. He's failed to play up to his potential as a pro but he could be re-energized under new head coach Andy Reid. With Dwayne Bowe taking the attention of the defense away the WR2 is going to see plenty of single coverage.

OAK - Joshua Cribbs hopes to play WR

Source: ANG Newspapers - Jerry McDonald

Oakland Raiders WR Joshua Cribbs said he hopes to get an opportunity to produce on offense in addition to his role on special teams.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cribbs offers little as a wide receiver. However, the Raiders don't really have any proven players in their WR corps so there might be a role for Cribbs as a third or fourth guy.

CAR - WR Steve Smith blasts QB Mark Sanchez

Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith verbally blasted New York Jets QB Thursday, May 16. 'He sucks,' Smith reportedly said. 'I wouldn't let Mark Sanchez throw me a paper bag sandwich.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith needs to tell us how he really feels. We'll see Sanchez battle rookie Geno Smith for the starting job this year.

NFL - WR Randy Moss' future undecided

Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Free-agent WR Randy Moss (49ers) is still undecided if he will play football this season. There was reportedly interest in Moss a few months ago, although nothing has transpired since. Moss had only 434 yards last season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moss feels he was underused last year. The 49ers didn't feature him enough as he'd like and we're not sure there's any team out there that would be willing to take a chance on Moss.

NYJ - QB Mark Sanchez expects to win starting job

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Jane McManus

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez said he expects to win the starting quarterback job this offseason. Sanchez said he knows he needs to cut down on his interceptions and expects to improve in that area.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like the confidence coming from Sanchez here. We'll see if that can carry over to the football field when the games are live. Sanchez has been the Stuart Smalley of QBs in recent years because of his lack of confidence and mistake prone play. He'll have to beat out second-round rookie QB Geno Smith if he wants to win the starting job.

MIN - Cordarrelle Patterson will be given opportunity to start

Source: NFL.com

Minnesota Vikings WR Cordarrelle Patterson will be given an opportunity to earn a starting wide receiver spot across from WR Greg Jennings this year, according to head coach Leslie Frazier. WR Joe Webb will be insurance in case Patterson doesn't pan out.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We wouldn't consider Webb any sort of insurance in this situation because of his struggles as a receiver. Patterson should win the starting job and can make an impact for this team in 2013. He's fantastic with the football after the catch and the team could use him on underneath routes similar to what they used to do with Percy Harvin (Seahawks). Patterson is strong, fast, and physical but struggles with concentration from time to time.

SD - QB Philip Rivers to have big role

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said the team will ask QB Philip Rivers to play a huge role in reducing the learning curve for the rest of the bodies on offense this year. 'We're going to throw as much of the offense as Philip can handle,' McCoy said. 'When he tells us to slow down, we'll slow down.' Rivers said the practices with new head coach McCoy have been designed for more intermediate passes than in recent years.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Rivers as a bounce back QB this year. McCoy is a coach known to be versatile in his play calling and he will fit the offense around the skill set of those in the lineup. Rivers' current ADP is QB20 and he's coming off the board at the end of round 12.

CLE - QB Brian Hoyer signs

Source: FOXSports.com - Adam Caplan

The Cleveland Browns signed free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Cardinals) to an undisclosed two-year deal Thursday, May 16.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hoyer is added to the mix of backup caliber QBs in Cleveland. Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell are competing for the starting job in camp. Hoyer will give the team veteran depth but looks like a mere third-stringer with the Browns.

NYG - RB Andre Brown could be poised to start

Source: Yahoo! Sports

New York Giants RB Andre Brown could be poised to start in 2013. 'This is my year,' Brown said. 'I have to go out there and I have to produce. I feel like this is a very important season and I have to go out there and show the world what Andre Brown is made of.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown has the experience that David Wilson does not have. He's bigger than Wilson and more capable between the tackles and on short yardage situations. Brown has huge durability concerns and lacks the big play ability that Wilson brings to the field. We'll see the two battle for the starting job in training camp.

MIN - WR Joe Webb fine with position change

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Sid Hartman

Minnesota Vikings WR Joe Webb said he is fine with moving from quarterback to wide receiver but expects it to take some times to get comfortable at the position. 'Iím doing real good. I still have a long ways to go, but Iím getting better every day and thatís all you can do. I just take it one step at a time, one day at a time, one play at a time, and hopefully it can turn out as a success,' Webb said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of course Webb is fine with the move. He failed to impress as a QB and if he wants to stay with the team then a position change was necessary. The Vikings need playmakers at the position and Webb is incredibly athletic. He needs to prove that he's learned how to be a better route runner with increased concentration.

NYJ - QB David Garrard says team will have open QB competition

Source: The Star-Ledger - Michael J. Fensom

Retired QB David Garrard said the New York Jets coaches told him they would have an open competition for the starting quarterback job during the offseason and that no player will be promised the starting job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is Mark Sanchez's job to lose but many expect rookie Geno Smith to win the job before the start of the regular season. Smith is a better athlete, has more confidence, and is an extremely intelligent player. He gives defenses more to worry about than Sanchez does.

CLE - Coach talks about QB rotation

Source: Medina County Gazette - Scott Petrak

Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski said the team likely will continue to use QB Brandon Weeden with the first-team offense and QB Jason Campbell with the second-team offense during organized team activities but it is too early to name a starting quarterback.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a competition the team wants to see unfold in training camp. The front office has doubts about Weeden but he's actually a good fit for the Norv Turner offense. He's got a big arm, is an aggressive passer, and has the weapons outside to make big plays. We'll see if Weeden can win the job, hang onto the job, and impress the doubters in the building this year.

DAL - QB Tony Romo's role not changing

Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has downplayed the fact that owner Jerry Jones said QB Tony Romo will have a significantly larger role in the offense this season. 'It's really been similar to every quarterback situation that I've been involved in with every team that I've been involved in,' Garrett. 'In every place in this organization and in others, you're trying to get that kind of rapport between your starting quarterback and the coaching staff, and we've had it, and we'll continue to have that.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Garrett is trying to downplay the situation here but if Jones wants more Romo then Jones will eventually get just that. We'll be able to see if Romo has more control over the offense when the team gets to the regular season.

NO - Mark Ingram improved in second half of season

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram rushed for 178 yards and one touchdown in the first eight games of the 2012 season but rushed for 424 yards and four touchdowns in the second half of the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see more from Ingram this year. He's failed to live up to his first-round draft status as a pro but is trending upwards. With the return of head coach Sean Payton we may see the team emphasize the ground game a little more than they did last year. Ingram's current ADP is RB36 and he's coming off the board in the middle of round eight.

NYG - Nothing imminent on S Charles Woodson

Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

The New York Giants are not close to signing free-agent CB Charles Woodson (Packers) and no visit has been scheduled. The Giants would need Woodson to be OK with signing a one-year deal for close to the veteran minimum for a deal to be struck.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants, Raiders, Panthers, and Broncos all have interest in the veteran. If he wants to contend for a championship then the Broncos and Giants become the most attractive teams.

NYJ - QB David Garrard could return as coach

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Jane McManus

Retired QB David Garrard said the New York Jets offered him the chance to attend their training camp as a coaching intern. Garrard said he will have to talk with his wife before deciding to accept the offer.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Now that Garrard is done playing football he'll have to consider what he wants to do with his life. Several former players have turned to the coaching ranks once their playing days are over.

PHI - Will look at WR Jeremy Maclin as returner

Source: CSNPhilly.com - Geoff Mosher

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said the team will look at WR Jeremy Maclin as a punt returner during organized team activities. Kelly said Maclin had experience as a returner but is not sure if Maclin will be used in the role. Maclin indicated he would be open to returning punts.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Maclin is dangerous in the open field because he's fast and can make defenders miss. We'll see if he can impress given this new opportunity in training camp.

SD - OLB Dwight Freeney takes physical

Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent DE Dwight Freeney (Colts) took a physical for the San Diego Chargers Thursday, May 16. While he has not signed a deal yet, the meeting with the team went well.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If he passes his physical then we could see an offer submitted by the Chargers. The team needs pass rushing help after losing Melvin Ingram to a knee injury earlier this week.

NYG - Interested in S Charles Woodson

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Ohm Youngmisuk

The New York Giants are interested in signing free-agent CB Charles Woodson (Packers), according to Woodson's agent, Carl Poston. The Giants would likely sign Woodson to the veteran's minimum if he passes a physical.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The interest in Woodson is starting to skyrocket in the last week or so. Teams like the Broncos, Raiders, and Panthers also have interest in Woodson. The veteran has position versatility and can play both safety and cornerback.

DET - Nick Fairley makes bold statement

Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Detroit Lions DT Nick Fairley said he and DT Ndamukong Suh are the most dangerous defensive tackle tandems in the league heading into 2013. 'Of course,' Fairley said. 'We're going to give guys trouble, man. It's like pick your poison this year with our defensive line. You cannot come in and double-team Ndamukong and you can't come in and double-team me.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's great confidence shown by Fairley, and now it's time to live up to the hype. Both are incredibly talented players and the pass rush was helped even further when the team added DE 'Ziggy' Ansah with the fifth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft.

That'll do it for tonight, Folks. Thanks for letting us be a part of your Football season and we'll see you tomorrow with the update.
