HOU - RB Arian Foster update

Source: Houston Chronicle - Stephanie Stradley

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said RB Arian Foster (back) is fine, but still bothered by back tightness.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're waiting to see Foster is on track to play in the third preseason game before moving him outside of the elite running back tier. There are some worries about this being evidence of overuse in the last three years catching up with Foster, but if he plays next weekend, it will be easier to see it as giving a veteran the rest and deference he has earned by being one of the best in the league at his position.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles has mild foot strain

Source: The Associated Press - Dave Skretta

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (foot) is dealing with a mild foot strain, and he wasn't walking with a boot or a noticeable limp Tuesday, Aug. 13. He rode a stationary bike but didn't participate in practice.

'His ankle ligaments were fine," Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said. "He had some pain on the outside bone of his foot. We did an X-ray. That was negative. There's a tendon that attaches right at that spot and that's what is sore right now. That's why we call it a strain.'

'People are speculating Lisfranc and all that,' Burkholder said of the mid-foot injury that caused problems for former RB Larry Johnson. 'He doesn't have any discomfort there. I've had him see two orthopedic surgeons and everyone agrees he has a mild foot strain.'

There is no timetable for when Charles will return to action, but it's unlikely he'll play in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 16.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Big news here. As we told you yesterday in our report from Dr. Bramel, these are the things we were hoping for. #1. He's not in a walking boot. That's big. #2. They're diagnosing it as a strain and not a sprain. That's good. Basically, this is looking as good as you could ask after what happened Monday.

It's important to note that rookie Knile Davis was taking a majority of the first-team reps with the team in practice. Davis is a poor man's version of Darren McFadden (Raiders). He has good straight line speed but lacks elusiveness and has durability concerns. Shaun Draughn and Cyrus Gray are battling for the No. 3 job.

MIA - OC thinks starting RB job close

Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman indicated this week that RB Lamar Miller is not necessarily locked in as the top tailback on the depth chart over RB Daniel Thomas, at least not yet. 'Yeah, I would say it's pretty close, the running back competition,' Sherman said. 'I thought that Daniel Thomas did a really nice job in the game the other day. Certainly Miller has had his shining moments as well, and some of the younger guys have stepped up.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller is going to be the lead back here unless something dramatic happens. Thomas has underperformed his second-round draft status, although his size makes it seem like he would be a better short yardage back than Miller. Thomas hasn't excelled in those situations in the past. Unless Thomas really impresses in the next two preseason games, there's no reason to move Miller down from his place as an upside RB2 play in the third or fourth round, no matter what Sherman says.

GB - WR Randall Cobb dealing with pain

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb (biceps) is practicing through the pain associated with a biceps injury. 'I have some pain,' Cobb said. 'I'm dealing with that. The hardest part for me is that I'm a tough guy. I don't like missing practice. I'm trying to be smart and tough and that's a little bit difficult for me. I understand I have some limitations and have to be smart about it, but it's difficult.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cobb is showing toughness dealing with this injury. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said this is an injury Cobb could be dealing with "for a while."

CLE - RB Trent Richardson fully healthy

Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson (shin) is no longer wearing protective covering on his right shin and said he is 100 percent healthy. His practice workload increased last weekend, but the team hasn't decided if they'll let him play in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 15. 'In the back of your mind you've got to realize it's preseason and coach is gonna do the best thing for me to put me in the best position to stay healthy for the whole season,' he said. 'It's good and bad. I feel I can be ready to go Sept. 8 without playing any preseason. I feel I can be ready with playing preseason.' RB Dion Lewis has taken most of the first-team reps when Richardson hasn't practiced.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Browns here. Richardson is one of the most physically gifted RBs in the league today. If healthy it wouldn't surprise us to see him finish as a top 5 fantasy RB. Under new OC Norv Turner we could see the best brought out of Richardson if only he can stay healthy.

SD - More on WR Keenan Allen

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen (knee) left practice to get treatment on a posterior cruciate ligament injury that Allen suffered in 2012, according to head coach Mike McCoy. McCoy said the team wants to stay on top of the issue.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Here we go again. This is the same PCL injury that plagued him during the pre-draft process and caused him to slide in the 2013 NFL draft. The team needs to proceed with caution here. Allen has incredible talent as a linear athlete who can make difficult catches seem routine.

IND - TE Coby Fleener has a concussion

Source: The Herald Bulletin - George Bremer

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts TE Coby Fleener (concussion) has been diagnosed with a concussion and has begun the NFL concussion protocol.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the Colts here as they have already seen fellow second-year TE Dwayne Allen get banged up with a foot injury. This is Fleener's second concussion of his NFL career. We're unlikely to see Fleener in the team's second preseason game this week. He could possibly return for the dress rehearsal of the regular season aka week three of the preseason.

NYJ - WR Santonio Holmes working hard

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets WR Santonio Holmes (foot) is 'desperately' trying to work his way back onto the playing field, and the team has been pleased with his work ethic.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Holmes is trying to get back to the field as soon as possible but that doesn't mean he's going to be ready in time for the start of the regular season. In fact, most believe he'll have to begin this year on the PUP list which would force him to miss the first six weeks of 2013 as he continues to come back from this Grade 4 (most severe) Lis Franc injury.

DEN - RB Montee Ball remains No. 2

Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball remains behind RB Ronnie Hillman on the depth chart. He played 11 snaps in the preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, posting five carries for just nine yards. Ball has received occasional carries with the first-team offense during this week's practices, but remains No. 2 on the depth chart.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ball has not made many standout plays in practice. The team is giving him every opportunity to win the starting job but he is not outplaying Hillman. Knowshon Moreno has done more with his (limited) first team carries. The honeymoon period is over, Ball needs to start flashing that he can be the bellcow the Broncos envisioned when they selected him in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft.

NYG - WR Hakeem Nicks likely to play in preseason game

Source: The Star-Ledger - Conor Orr

New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (groin) is likely to play in the team’s preseason game Sunday, Aug. 18.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's the same old story with Nicks. If healthy he could finish the year as a top 15 fantasy WR. He's in a contract year and could break the bank if he's injury free and plays up to his potential in 2013.

JAX - WR Cecil Shorts does not practice

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts (calf) did not participate in practice Tuesday, Aug. 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shorts is considered day-to-day with this calf injury. It's looking like he's going to be doubtful for week two of the preseason.

TEN - Not concerned with WR Kenny Britt

Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Kenny Britt (knee) has missed practice time due to swelling and soreness in his right knee, but head coach Mike Munchak isn't terribly concerned at this point. 'We just have to be smart, because it is all about getting him to September,' Munchak said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team knows that Britt is talented but will monitor his injury closely. If healthy Britt could finish as a top 10 fantasy WR if he plays up to his potential. The chances of both happening are somewhat slim but Britt is worth a gamble at his current ADP (WR36, 9.03).

TEN - QB Jake Locker learning from mistakes

Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker had an awful practice Sunday, Aug. 11, but reportedly bounced back nicely Monday, Aug. 12. He said he expects to have bad practices from time to time, and the most important thing is learning from them and not repeating the same mistakes.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Locker sounds more like a rookie than a quarterback entering his third season. Chances are, we will be seeing the Titans have to find another "quarterback of the future" soon unless Locker really blossoms once the season starts.

JAX - Still no clear-cut leader in QB race

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Vito Stellino

Jacksonville Jaguars QBs Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne continue to battle for the starting job, with no real clear-cut leader in the race. Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said he is not necessarily disappointed, as long as both continue to improve. 'We look at it is if they're continuing to improve, they're going to continue to stay close. If neither is improving, they're going to continue to stay close,' Fisch said. Head coach Gus Bradley will inform the team Friday, Aug. 16, who will start the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 17, against the New York Jets.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Many folks feel it'll be Gabbert. We think Fantasy owners should be rooting for Henne, because the Jaguars wide receivers did much better with him in the lineup last year. Jaguars fans should be rooting for a good crop of quarterbacks in the 2014 draft.

BAL - RB Bernard Pierce back on the field

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RB Bernard Pierce (knee) was back on the practice field after missing two days due to a knee ailment.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pierce's injury looked like it might be a sprain that would cost him weeks of practice and play, but the reports of it being nothing significant ended up being correct. His value is trending up, as he might be the best between the tackles back on the Ravens roster right now. You'll have to spend an eighth or ninth round pick to get Pierce this year.

NYJ - Moving away from ground-and-pound philosophy?

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

The New York Jets ran the ball only 16 times and passed it 42 times in their first preseason game. Although head coach Rex Ryan would like more balance than that, he hinted that it's possible the team will look to throw more often in 2013. 'Who said you need to be balanced?' offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. 'You score points throwing the ball. Now you're getting into a philosophical situation. Look it, we don't care how we get it done -- running, passing, we don't care who gets the credit. It's whatever it takes to win the next game.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yep, because the strength of the team is the QB and their awesome group of WRs. Actually, it's quite the contrary. The Jets have huge questions marks at the WR position behind Jeremy Kerley. They also don't have any clarity at the QB position. Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez are competing for that job but there is no frontrunner at this time.

TB - Gabe Carimi won't start

Source: ESPN.com - Pat Yasinskas

Tampa Bay Buccaneers OT Gabe Carimi will not be an option to start over OT Demar Dotson at right tackle. The team sees Carimi as insurance behind Dotson and OT Donald Penn at left tackle. Dotson is having an outstanding showing in training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Buccaneers knew what they were getting when they traded for Carimi earlier this offseason. Carimi was a first-round pick in 2011 but it's clear by this time that he's only a backup caliber player at the pro level. The Bucs offensive line coach Bob Bostad coached Carimi at Wisconsin.

TB - WR Kevin Ogletree the favorite for third receiver

Source: ESPN.com - Pat Yasinskas

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Kevin Ogletree appears to be the favorite for the third wide receiver job over WRs Tiquan Underwood and Chris Owusu. Underwood and Owusu have had strong showings as well, though, so they could see playing time.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ogletree has the experience edge and has been making noteworthy plays in practice. We're not expecting much fantasy value from Ogletree this year if he does win the WR3 job.

CLE - TE Jordan Cameron staying healthy

Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns TE Jordan Cameron has practiced every day while remaining healthy in training camp, and it looks as though he's becoming a big part of the offense. 'And he's played more physically, and he's worked hard. It's an interesting position because it's a very physical position. You get the ball in traffic a lot. I'm hoping he can become a guy that gives us the consistency we're looking for on third down plays,' offensive coordinator Norv Turner said. Cameron worked on training methods to prevent injuries in the offseason and reached out to Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez for advice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cameron works out with fellow former basketball star Julius Thomas (Broncos) during the offseason. He's set to be the team's starter this year and makes for a strong TE2 option with upside. Fantasy owners can add Cameron at TE16 (12.11) in 12 team PPR leagues.

NYJ - Not naming starting QB

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan has refused to name his starting quarterback between QBs Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith for the preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday, Aug. 17. Ryan said he won't hesitate to wait until after the third preseason game to name the starter for the regular season. Sanchez hasn't separated himself from the competition as many had expected, even though he's seen the majority of first-team reps in practice the last two days. QB Geno Smith (ankle) also mildly sprained his ankle in the preseason opener. Privately, the team is hoping Smith can step up and win the job, but his play has dipped in the last week, possibly because of his injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Oh those crafty Jets. We won't know who is going to be the starter this season as Smith and Sanchez continue to battle. It's a competition that is going back and forth with no clear frontrunner. Fantasy owners should avoid this situation if at all possible.

TB - CB Darrelle Revis says he could play in preseason game

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis (knee) said it is a possibility that he could play in the team’s third preseason game. “That's a possibility if me playing Week 3,” Revis said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Week 3 is known as the dress rehearsal for the regular season. Even if Revis plays in that game we don't think he'll get too many reps. The team wants him healthy for the start of the regular season.
