NYJ - QB Geno Smith wants to practice next week

Source: The Star-Ledger - Darryl Slater

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (ankle) wants to participate in practice Monday, Aug. 12, even though he suffered an ankle injury during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 9. The X-rays on the ankle were negative. The injury is believed to be minor and shouldn't limit Smith much if any.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith knows that he won't win the job from the sidelines and watching Mark Sanchez throw yet another interception - this one returned for a touchdown - has likely emboldened the rookie to believe he still has a shot at the starting job.

CLE - Hope RB Trent Richardson can play in preseason game

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski said RB Trent Richardson (shin) will be worked into team drills during practice this week and hopes Richardson will be able to play in the second preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson was a beast last season and practically had to be dragged off the field when injuries caught up to him. We know he can produce like an elite RB1, but he has to stay healthy to do it. Keep an eye on this but he should be ready to go Week 1.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell injury update

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Mark Kaboly

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he did not see enough from RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) during practice this week to allow him to play.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Disappointing to be sure for those of us who wanted to see the rookie in action so we could better gauge his fantasy worth, but smart nonetheless. The Steelers need him healthy for the season and are already sure he's the starter, so they don't need to throw him out there in the first week of preseason games. If this lingers into the third week, be concerned. Otherwise, his ADP of 48 and RB23 remain right on point.

BAL - RB Bernard Pierce injury update

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson

Baltimore Ravens RB Bernard Pierce (knee) could miss a few days because of a sprained left knee. An MRI on the knee did not show any structural damage.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Ravens and fantasy owners as Pierce won't be sidelined for long. He still represents good value as a weekly flex play.

BAL - Will sign WR Brandon Stokley

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson

The Baltimore Ravens plan to sign free-agent WR Brandon Stokley (Broncos).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens obviously didn't like something in their offense when they decimated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday night. Perhaps missing the possession receiving that Anquan Boldin brought to the table, a role Stokley could fill. Stokley was reliable for Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos last season, but not all that productive. It's a crowded group at receiver for the Ravens, so his totals won't look much better in Baltimore.

KC - Coach has been interested in QB Alex Smith for a while

Source: The New York Times - Nate Taylor

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he attempted to acquire QB Alex Smith several times when he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and Smith was with the San Francisco 49ers.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's good to know Smith has the backing of his new coach. Smith is a serviceable quarterback who should be able to take advantage of Dwayne Bowe and Jamaal Charles, but he can't pull touchdowns out of a hat. If either of those two are hurt or shut down, the pickings might be slim.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon does not think injury will linger

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (knee) said he does not believe the patellar tendonitis in his knee will be an issue during the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At least he has that going for him. Unfortunately there have been some reports that his focus hasn't been all that good. He'll need to get that straight, as well as his health, if he wants to step right back into the offense when he returns from suspension in Week 3.

JAX - Unsure about RB Maurice Jones-Drew for next game

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said he is not sure if RB Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) will play in the second preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jaguars will play it cautious with their lead back as he returns from his Lis Franc injury last season. Worth keeping an eye on, but he should be ready to go Week 1.

CIN - WR Andrew Hawkins could be candidate for short-term IR

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said WR Andrew Hawkins (ankle) is a candidate to be placed on the Injured Reserve/Designated to Return list. Hawkins will wear a cast on his ankle for 10 days and then the team will determine the next course of action.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Hawkins out it leaves Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones primarily battling for the No. 2 spot. Sanu was very reliable in the redzone before an injury ended his season while Jones has shown speed but still is a bit raw. Both players enter their second year and have shown the ability to play well and whichever one wins the spot will have a good chance to put up a lot of numbers while defenses key on AJ Green.

JAX - QB Blaine Gabbert unimpressive in opener

Source: The Associated Press

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert completed 5 of 10 passes for 19 yards, with an interception, in his team's 27-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Friday, Aug. 9.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gabbert played the first four series of the preseason game against the Miami Dolphins but struggled to get anywhere. He was picked off on the last play of the first quarter when his pass went off fullback Will Ta'ufo'ou's hands. Worse for him, Chad Henne came in and directed a 15-play, 75-yard drive resulting in a field goal. The Jaguars were without several starters and Henne was working with the first string offense against a second string Miami defense, but this was not a good start to the preseason for Gabbert.

PHI - QB Nick Foles to start against Carolina

Source: The Associated Press

Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly told reporters QB Nick Foles would start the team's next exhibition game against the Carolina Panthers. Foles was 5 of 6 for 43 yards after an early fumble against the New England Patriots.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michael Vick got the start Friday against the New England Patriots, so it's merely Foles' turn in the rotation. Vick outplayed Foles slightly against the Patriots, but both players led their team down the field on scoring drives and head coach Chip Kelly isn't tipping his hand towards who is in front. This is a battle which will go down to the wire.

TEN - Coaching staff impressed with running game

Source: The Associated Press

Although the Tennessee Titans lost 22-21 to the Washington Redskins on Thursday, Aug. 8, coach Mike Munchak walked away happy with his team's running game, which gained 92 yards in the first quarter alone. 'That's what we're hoping to be all about, what we'd be able to establish and we did that,' Munchak said. 'We have to be a team that we're going to do it if it's there. If we think it's there, we're going to run the ball and take over on the line of scrimmage. We may run it 10 times in a row if that's what it takes to win, or we feel we can take a game over.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The changes to the offensive line seems to have helped quite a bit and rookie guard Chance Warmack looked very good. The high point of the evening was a Chris Johnson 58 yard touchdown run where he looked like the old Chris Johnson, including a tremendous juke to avoid a defender. Shonn Greene also looked better than expected, showing power and a determined running style he tended to lack in New York with the Jets.

SD - WR Vincent Brown might play Thursday

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic

San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Brown caught balls during pregame drills Thursday, Aug. 8, but he did not play in the preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Brown is expected to suit up for the game Thursday, Aug. 15, against the Chicago Bears.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The No. 1 receiver position for the Chargers is up for grabs and Vincent Brown is an early favorite. San Diego is being cautions with Brown as he comes back from injury, but we'll hopefully see what he can do this week. Brown can stretch the field and shows good burst in his cuts. His routes have improved this offseason as have his ball skills. Brown could be a solid WR3 with the upside for more if the offense holds together.

ARI - QB Carson Palmer sharp in team debut

Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer completed four of his six pass attempts for 77 yards and a touchdown in his team debut in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 9, against the Green Bay Packers. 'Both (offensive line) groups looked great. The pass protection has been phenomenal,' Palmer said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Green Bay Packers have some questions along their secondary, but that doesn't take away from Palmer's day. Palmer threw for over 4,000 yards with a sub-par Oakland Raiders team and has much more talented receivers to work with now. He could be poised for his best year in some time.

PHI - QB Michael Vick efficient in preseason opener

Source: KFFL.com

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick completed four of his five pass attempts for 94 yards, one touchdown and no interception in the preseason opener Friday, Aug. 9, against the New England Patriots. The score was a 47-yard pass and catch with WR DeSean Jackson in the first quarter.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Vick is going to need to be more than efficient if he wants the starting job, but not turning over the ball is a good first step. He'll be the second quarterback up in the game against the Carolina Panthers this week and has to turn on the gas to get past Foles.

ATL - WR Julio Jones limited

Source: NFL.com

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said WR Julio Jones (hamstrings) was limited during practice Saturday, Aug. 10. Smith said he expects Jones to fully participate in the near future.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

More than likely just a team being cautious with a veteran. Jones shouldn't be sidelined long by the injury.

MIN - Will keep getting ball to WR Cordarrelle Patterson

Source: FOXSportsNorth.com - Brian Hall

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said the team will continue to try to get the ball to WR Cordarrelle Patterson because he did well as a receiver in the first preseason game. 'We weren't sure how fast he'd come as a receiver. For him to do what he did tonight, that's going to help his confidence. I'm sure he'll go back and work even harder to be more of a complete receiver. That's exactly what you want out of a rookie playing wide receiver in our league. He's going to be hungry coming back and we've just got to keep feeding him to help him to continue to grow,' Frazier said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Patterson had a great first game, but remember it was the preseason and he still has Christian Ponder (who threw an interception on one of his only two throws) as his quarterback which could limit his productivity a little bit this season.

CIN - Mixed review for TE Tyler Eifert

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said he liked how TE Tyler Eifert played in the running game but thought Eifert was awful in the passing game during the first preseason game. 'He was way better in the running game than he was in the passing game,' Gruden said. 'It was awful. Great in the running game and awful in the passing game. Finally I get something to yell at him about.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The fact that the Bengals need to search for something to yell at the rookie about speaks volumes for the sort of camp Eifert has had. That said, if he's going to have an impact this season, he has to step up during passing plays. Eifert still has the potential to be a sleeper tight end fantasy stud this season if he can improve over the next few weeks.

CIN - Two could practice this week

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said WR A.J. Green (knee) and OT Andrew Whitworth (knee) could participate in practice this week, but indicated they will not be rushed back to play in a game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bengals are just being cautious with their players, especially Green since he's a huge part of their offense. He should be fine for Week 1.

WAS - Donte' Stallworth update

Source: 106.7 The Fan - Grant Paulsen

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins WR Donte' Stallworth (hamstring) has a sore hamstring and tried to play through it in the first preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's not likely to be very fantasy relevant in any case, but being sidelined with a hamstring isn't going to help him secure a roster spot.

SF - RB Kendall Hunter activated

Source: The Mercury News - Cam Inman

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (Achilles') was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hunter is finally ready to go after recovering from his Achilles injury last season. He's done some running and looked good in relief of Frank Gore last season prior to being hurt and could contribute some if Gore gets hurt. He'll compete with LaMichael James to be the primary backup behind Gore in 2013.

MIA - Two competing for No. 3 RB job

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins RB Mike Gillislee is the leading candidate for the No. 3 running back job but is being pushed by RB Jonas Gray for the job. Gillislee rushed for 37 yards on 12 carries in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 9, while Gray rushed for 32 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. Gray is showing he could be a valuable short-yardage and goal line running back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The interesting thing is how, despite being reportedly out of favor and a weak camp, Daniel Thomas is still above both Gray and Gillislee. Unless Thomas is moved out of the No. 2 spot, neither will have much value (assuming they both make the roster), which gives Gray the edge due to his potential goal line work.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill, TE Dustin Keller working well together

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill appears to have created chemistry with TE Dustin Keller during training camp. The two players connected on two receptions for 46 yards and one touchdown in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 9.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's long been a theory that Dustin Keller never really reached his potential with the New York Jets more because of poor quarterback play and a lack of plays called his way. Early indications support that theory, as Keller had the chance to show off his athleticism and skill on Friday and performed. His value could heat up if he continues his strong preseason and Tannehill keeps looking for him.

BUF - Jeff Tuel could receive significant playing time

Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills QB Jeff Tuel could play as much as a half in the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 11, because of the injury to QB Kevin Kolb (knee).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Kevin Kolb hurt (and not exactly lighting camp up) Tuel could find himself in great position to make the roster with a good performance. He won't threaten EJ Manuel or Kolb, but he can make a case for a roster spot.

BUF - QB Kevin Kolb a game-time decision

Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said QB Kevin Kolb (knee) will be a game-time decision for the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 11. Marrone said Kolb could serve as the emergency quarterback.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills need to see what they have in rookies EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel while Kolb has proven to be exactly what we thought he was - relatively unimpressive - so even if he's cleared to go, we'll get a lot longer look at the rookies and less of Kolb.

NO - WR Preston Parker impressive in preseason game

Source: The Associated Press

New Orleans Saints WR Preston Parker caught a pair of touchdown passes in his team's 17-13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, Aug. 9. Parker is trying to earn the No. 3 receiver spot on the roster.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Parker is fighting with Nick Toon, Andy Tanner and Kenny Stills for the third receiver spot and all of them played well Friday night. While he didn't see much work in the first half, Parker was the go-to guy for backup quarterback Luke McCown and scored both his touchdowns in red zone situations. He'll need to keep up the pressure to create some distance between himself and the other receivers.

GB - No RBs stand out in blowout loss

Source: NFL.com

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks led the team with 38 rushing yards on 12 carries in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 9, against the Arizona Cardinals. RB Alex Green checked in with seven carries for 16 yards, while RB Johnathan Franklin posted six scampers for 14 yards. RB Eddie Lacy (hamstring) did not play due to a hamstring injury, and RB DuJuan Harris (knee) was absent due to a knee.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Starks has always had talent—he just also has a propensity for injury. With Eddie Lacy and DuJuan Harris out, Starks, Johnathan Franklin and Alex Green had a chance to separate themselves, but didn't end up doing so. This still appears as if Eddie Lacy is at the front of the line for carries this season.
