Our users told us they wanted a great mobile drafting tool and we listened. We worked through the offseason combing through every type of league we could. We believe our end result is the most complex math algorithms created to best simulate any type of league. We don't have the computer teams just draft by Average Draft Position like our competitors do. We use a combination of VBD, ADP, position need, and a high degree of mathematics to power our Artificial Intelligence algorithms. It's this kind of attention to detail that people have come to expect from the Footballguys brand.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith leaves with ankle injury

Source: Chris Wesseling - NFL.com

Jets QB Geno Smith appeared to twist his ankle as he was scrambling. He left the game and the Jets announced only that Smith had sustained an ankle injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Obviously let's watch to see if Smith misses any time with this. The Jets QB battle remains close and clearly Smith needs to be on the field to win the job. Stay tuned.

WAS - No timetable for Robert Griffin's practice time

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said the team still has not decided when QB Robert Griffin III (knee) will increase his practice reps. Griffin is expected to work in only seven-on-seven drills for the time being.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

All reports have been positive about Griffin's recovery to this point. The team is wisely being cautious with him as he comes back from knee surgery. We should see a near 100 percent RG3 by week one of the regular season.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy, WR Randall Cobb sitting out

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (hamstring) and WR Randall Cobb (biceps) will not play in the team's first preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lacy is competing to be the team's starting RB in 2013. The second-round pick from Alabama was only a 14 game starter in college yet had durability concerns that caused him to fall in the draft.

BUF - QB EJ Manuel works with starters

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel is working with the first-team offense during practice Friday, Aug. 9.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manuel is working to win the starting job over Kevin Kolb. He's seen as the QB of the future and will be in the lineup eventually even if he doesn't win the job initially.

PIT - TE Matt Spaeth out 8-10 weeks

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Gerry Dulac

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers TE Matt Spaeth (foot) is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks because of a Lisfranc sprain.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Steelers already have enough problems to worry about at the TE position. Starter Heath Miller may not be ready to begin the regular season as he comes back from a knee injury.

SD - Could have competition for No. 2 QB job

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said QB Brad Sorensen will be given the chance to compete with QB Charlie Whitehurst for the No. 2 quarterback job but indicated Sorensen has a long way to go. McCoy said Whitehurst has some things to work on but also made comments in support of Whitehurst. Whitehurst did throw two interceptions in the team's first preseason game while Sorensen threw the team's only touchdown.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sorensen was the best FCS prospect in the 2013 NFL draft. At Southern Utah he showed proper zip on a compact throwing motion. He's a classic pocket passer who offers little in the way of scrambling ability. Sorensen needs to have time to adjust to the speed of the NFL and we'd like to see improved pass placement instead of the area code accuracy he currently has.

STL - RB Daryl Richardson expects more receptions

Source: College2Pro.com - Bo Marchionte

St. Louis Rams RB Daryl Richardson said he expects to be more involved in the passing game this season. 'I'm going to have more receptions this year,' Richardson said. 'They're going to give me more opportunities to catch the ball with screens and stuff.' Richardson said he is more comfortable with the offense.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson is a quality big play back who is exciting to watch. He's likely to begin the season as the starter and could hold onto the job if he impresses. Richardson is dangerous in space and has the speed to take any touch to the house.

NO - RB Mark Ingram looking good

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune - Jeff Duncan

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram has looked very good during practices and could be seen as the player with the best training camp performance so far. He is looking like he did as a rookie when the first defender usually had a hard time bringing him down.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ingram has failed to play up to expectations since the team selected him in the first-round of the 2011 NFL draft. Durability and inconsistency have plagued his pro game thus far. It sounds like now he's fresh and ready to prove the doubters wrong. Ingram could outperform his current ADP of RB37 (non-PPR) if he plays up to his potential. The Saints poor defense may force the team into more pass happy situations which would mean less Ingram and more Darren Sproles. We like Ingram as a low end RB3 with upside.

CLE - RB Dion Lewis appears to be in lead for No. 2 RB job

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Dion Lewis is believed to have an edge over RB Montario Hardesty (hamstring) for the No. 2 running back job because Hardesty has missed time with a hamstring injury. Lewis rushed for 12 yards on five carries and caught a 16-yard pass during the team's first preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The emergence of Lewis could bounce Hardesty off the final roster. Lewis is built low to the ground and runs with a lot of balance. He can bounce off would be tackles and keeps his feet after contact. He's a compact runner with good vision and instincts for running the ball. Lewis may end up being the primary backup behind Trent Richardson in 2013.

PHI - RB Chris Polk working with starters

Source: Phillymag.com - Sheil Kapadia

Philadelphia Eagles RB Chris Polk has been working with the first-team offense while RB LeSean McCoy (knee) has been sidelined. Polk has been competing with RB Bryce Brown for the No. 2 running back job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Polk was a fantastic receiver out of the backfield and ran with great strength during his college career at Washington. Shoulder problems caused him to fall undrafted in 2012. If healthy he may beat out Brown for the RB2 job in 2013.

IND - TE Dwayne Allen gets second opinion

Source: Terre Haute Tribune-Star - Tom James

Indianapolis Colts TE Dwayne Allen (foot) received a second opinion on his injured foot, but the team does not know the results of the exam at this point.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Losing Allen would be a blow to the passing game and it would rocket Coby Fleener's fantasy stock. Keep an eye on this situation as more word about Allen's injury comes out.

SD - Not ready to name starting LT

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said he is not ready to name a starting left tackle and indicated that OTs King Dunlap and Max Starks are still competing for the job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers have made several moves to upgrade their offensive line this offseason. They still won't have a rock solid O-Line but anything is better than what they had last year. QB Philip Rivers says "thank you."

NO - WR Kenny Stills looks to have edge for No. 3 WR job

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune - Jeff Duncan

New Orleans Saints WR Kenny Stills appears to be the leading candidate for the No. 3 wide receiver job at this point. WR Steve Breaston likely will compete with Stills for the job, but Stills has a big edge.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stills has the speed to get on top of the defense in a hurry and stretch the field. He plays bigger than his size and does a good job of tracking deep passes. The WR3 in the Saints offense is somebody fantasy owners should know. As we get closer to the regular season if we see Stills cemented into this job then keep him in mind when considering lottery ticket WRs late in your draft.

TB - Two shine in preseason game

Source: PewterReport.com

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Brian Leonard and WR Kevin Ogletree shined for the team in the first preseason game. Leonard showed good instincts in picking up blitzes. Ogletree led the team in receptions and yards.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ogletree is battling for the WR3 job behind Mike Williams and Vincent Jackson. He's failed to play up to his potential as a pro but got off to a strong start in the preseason on Thursday night.

TEN - Chance Warmack praised

Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak praised OG Chance Warmack for his play in the first preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Warmack is like a freight train combined with a tank. He's nasty inside and loves to punish the opposition. Adding Warmack in the draft and free agent Andy Levitre in free agency will greatly improve the Titans' ground game. Both Chris Johnson and Shonn Greene will be the beneficiaries.

SF - WR A.J. Jenkins not worried about preseason performance

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins said he will not worry about the fumble he lost during the team's first preseason game. 'Hopefully, I've made some strides,' Jenkins said. 'It's the first preseason game. We have three more games left. It's a long year. No need to panic and get all discouraged. Just got to keep watching film.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jenkins needs to elevate his game. The 2012 first-round pick failed to record a catch last year and has been average in camp. Beat writers for the 49ers say Jenkins has as many drops as he does big catches in practice. Jenkins is competing for the WR2 job opposite Anquan Boldin in 2013.

STL - Rodger Saffold to miss time

Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Jim Thomas

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said OT Rodger Saffold (shoulder) could miss a few preseason games after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the team's first preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team wants Saffold to be ready for the start of the regular season and all indications are he will be available at that time. Saffold is in the final year of his contract and needs to stay healthy if he wants a lucrative deal in free agency next year. Durability problems have plagued his pro career.

OAK - WR Denarius Moore inconsistent

Source: CSNBayArea.com

Oakland Raiders WR Denarius Moore is showing to be inconsistent at training camp, making spectacular catches, followed by embarrassing drops. The Raiders coaches are looking for a “go-to” guy to step up and be a number one wide receiver.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The name of the game with Moore has been his inconsistency. He's an amazing athlete who can make difficult catches seem routine. However, he's been banged up quite a bit through his career and isn't a consistent force from week to week. We'll see if he can change that in 2013.

BUF - QB Kevin Kolb expected to practice

Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb (knee) participated in the team's walkthrough Friday, Aug. 9, and is expected to participate in evening practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kolb slipped on a wet rubber mat last week and has been dealing with a minor knee injury ever since. He's competing with rookie E.J. Manuel (Florida State) to be the team's starter in 2013. Even if Kolb wins the job in camp we could see the Bills make the change to Manuel sometime this year as he is their QB of the future.

NE - Rookie WRs working to increase targets

Source: The Boston Globe - Zuri Berry

New England Patriots WRs Josh Boyce, Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins each figure to play a big part heading into the regular season. There is plenty of anticipation to see how the rookies, who have had good training camps, look during live game action.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see this pecking order get established in the preseason. Dobson was the first picked out of the three (second-round, Marshall) and is the favorite to start opposite Danny Amendola. Boyce was drafted next (fourth-round, TCU) and he has the ability to get open with savvy route running on deep targets. Thompkins wasn't drafted (Cincinnati) but has crazy ball skills and can make difficult catches seem routine. The Patriots have a nice group of young WRs heading into 2013.

NE - TE Jake Ballard falling behind competition?

Source: The Boston Globe - Zuri Berry

New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld has looked good in practice, and TE Daniel Fells has reportedly had a solid training camp. TE Jake Ballard, on the other hand, has looked stiff at times, and has fallen behind in the team's competition.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ballard doesn't seem to be fully recovered from the knee injury that cost him all of 2012. He's being outplayed by Fells and undrafted rookie Zach Sudfeld. Ballard is squarely on the roster bubble and is in danger of getting cut.

DAL - RB Joseph Randle looking to improve

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Calvin Watkins

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle is looking to improve in his second preseason game after rushing 13 times for 70 yards in the team’s first preseason game. 'This is the next step,' Randle said. 'I'm just trying to establish myself as a hard-working guy and earn the respect of my teammates, all the things new people try to do. You earn respect from your teammates by what they see you doing and they see you working hard in practice, all the things that really matter in order for me to stay on the team. I have to be in order to do my part.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Randle is trying to beat out Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner for the primary backup job behind Demarco Murray. It's important to note because Murray is injury prone and is likely to miss some time in 2013. Randle is a straight line speed guy but lacks creativity or elusiveness in the open field.

PIT - WR Jerricho Cotchery breathing easier?

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The last wide receiver spot for the Pittsburgh Steelers was believed to be a battle between WRs Plaxico Burress (shoulder) and Jerricho Cotchery. With Burress suffering a torn rotator cuff in practice Thursday, Aug. 8, a potential season-ending injury, it might be good news for Cotchery.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cotchery and Burress were competing for one roster spot on the Steelers depth chart. This injury to Burress opens the door for Cotchery to make the team.

PIT - RB LaRod Stephens-Howling to get long look

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Gerry Dulac

The Pittsburgh Steelers want to see RB LaRod Stephens-Howling in third-down situations during the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 10, against the New York Giants. The team envisions that role for Stephens-Howling in the regular season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stephens-Howling is a big play back who could make for an interesting change of pace back for the Steelers. He runs with good balance and isn't afraid to grind out yards between the tackles.

SEA - RB Christine Michael shines

Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Eric D. Williams

Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael posted 89 yards on 16 carries in the team's preseason opener against the San Diego Chargers Thursday, Aug. 8. He appears to get stronger as the game went on, and head coach Pete Carroll said he wanted to make sure to get Christine into a rhythm. 'We weren't going to get frustrated with what happened early, and just keep sticking to it,' Carroll said. 'He bounced the ball well outside on his long run - had a couple of nice runs. He's got a long way to go, but he ran hard, looked quick and made some guys miss. So I think it's a very good first game for him.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

"Starbucks" runs hot on every carry. He's a high energy runner who drives his legs into the ground like pistons when he runs. Michael can change direction with ease and has good short area burst. He's still getting his speed back after suffering an ACL injury in 2011.

OAK - Have talked contract extension with RB Darren McFadden

Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

The Oakland Raiders have checked in with RB Darren McFadden on a contract extension. McFadden, who is entering a contract year, would prefer to wait until after the 2013 season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team would prefer to wait because McFadden has never made it through a full season during his pro career. Everyone knows his talent level is high but durability has been a huge problem. If he can stay healthy in 2013 and play up to expectations then he'll be rewarded with a lucrative contract in 2014.

TEN - WR Justin Hunter frustrates coaches

Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Justin Hunter failed to make a first down on a third-and-5 play as he retreated a couple of steps to try to get more out of the play and was tackled before the marker. 'They were waiting for me,' Hunter said. 'They were very mad. They were trying to get me to understand that when it's third down, get what you can and get down. You have to get the first down. I was trying to get more than what I had. I should've gone down.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a rookie mistake, and one Hunter will learn from. We love his ability to make big plays on short passes. Hunter can also track the ball deep. He only needs to work on improving his concentration as sometimes he'll turn upfield to run before securing the catch.
