GB - Coach sees RB DuJuan Harris as starter

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said he is looking forward to seeing RB DuJuan Harris (knee) practice because he considers Harris the team's starting running back. 'I'm excited to see when DuJuan Harris comes back, because I view him as our starter,' McCarthy said. 'I want him to get back in there and earn it like he did all of last year. He made an impact in our offense.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Packers made two moves in the draft to select Eddie Lacy (Alabama) and Johnathan Franklin (UCLA) to compete for the starting job. The team has shown the willingness to feature one back but who that is at this point is a mystery. Harris is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list and expected to miss another week or two.

PHI - QB Michael Vick to start preseason game

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick will start the teamís first preseason game, with QB Nick Foles starting the second preseason game. Both quarterbacks will alternate with the first team offense, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Some say Vick has created a slight edge in the competition with his play in training camp. If he wants to carry that over to win the starting job then Vick had better perform up to snuff in the preseason.

JAX - QB Blaine Gabbert receives praise - will start preseason game

Source: ESPN.com

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley has praised QB Blaine Gabbert's play during training camp. 'I think that he's really shown a lot of poise,' Bradley said of Gabbert. 'I think he handles situations that have been presented to him in practice. They (Gabbert and QB Chad Henne) both have done some really good things, both have made some really good progress. Now, are they there yet? No, and I hope they would both answer it the same way. We just felt like with Blaine, with what he's done the last couple days in practice and how he's responded, we decided to give him the nod.' QB Chad Henne will see some repetitions with the first-team offensive in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 9, too.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Gabbert here. He's had his struggles earlier this offseason but may have settled in during the week of training camp. He'll continue to compete with Chad Henne for the starting job in 2013. Gabbert is in a make or break season where he needs to show he can be the franchise QB the team envisioned when they made him a 2011 first-round pick.

CLE - RB Dion Lewis could be candidate for No. 2 RB job

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Dion Lewis could compete with RB Montario Hardesty for the No. 2 running back job if he is able to hold onto the football and show he can pass protect despite his small size.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lewis has good balance, pad level, and lateral agility when running the ball. He is tough in between the tackles and can make defenders miss if he gets to the second level. We'll see if he can win the RB2 job behind Trent Richardson. If he does then Montario Hardesty could be on the roster bubble.

PIT - TE Matt Spaeth injury update

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Gerry Dulac

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Matt Spaeth (undisclosed) is being evaluated in Pittsburgh for an undisclosed injury, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. The injury is believed to be some sort of foot or ankle issue.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Steelers need to find some TE help if Spaeth misses any time. They're already missing regular TE Heath Miller (knee). We may see Miller begin the season on the PUP list which would force him to miss the first six weeks of the year.

KC - WR Dexter McCluster lining up everywhere

Source: The Kansas City Star - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster is lining up everywhere eligible for a receiver in training camp. He has delivered some big plays. 'One million, five hundred and thirty-six ways that I can get the football,' McCluster said of his role in the Chiefs' offense. 'This offense is wide-open. You get opportunities everywhere. Itís a fun offense.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Andy Reid may finally be the one who figures out how to use McCluster. He's been a player without a position during his time in the pros. McCluster is a weapon who can be used effectively as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. The Chiefs need to find weapons in the passing game behind WR Dwayne Bowe. We could see McCluster fit that bill in 2013.

PIT - WR Burress suffered a torn rotator cuff

Source: Adam Schefter - ESPN.com

ESPN writes, "Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress has a torn rotator cuff, which could end his season, a source familiar with the injury told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tough break for Burress. We were projecting him as Pittsburgh's WR #5 so this doesn't radically affect the rankings.

SD - Speeding up playcalling

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic

The San Diego Chargers and head coach Mike McCoy are speeding up the playcalling this season, and the calls will go straight from a coach to QB Philip Rivers, without a middleman. 'It gets in quicker,' McCoy said. 'It gives Philip more time.' As a result, theoretically, the team will be less prone to delay of game penalties and rushed snaps. Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt will be the main play caller.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An important note for fantasy owners here. The Chargers have a poor defense and should be playing from behind a lot. This could mean more touches for RB Danny Woodhead. The up tempo offense is also good for QB Philip Rivers. He can get rid of the ball quicker and avoid pressure.

NYG - WR Hakeem Nicks unsure for preseason game

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Ohm Youngmisuk

New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (groin) is unsure if he will see snaps in the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 10. He's been practicing this week, but the team is being cautious not to bring him back too season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's good to see Nicks back on the practice field. He could be a top 15 fantasy WR if he stays healthy this year. Nicks is in a contract year and could break the bank next offseason if he plays up to his potential.

PHI - Two WRs will try to play

Source: CSNPhilly.com - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles WR Russell Shepard (hamstring) and WR Damaris Johnson (hamstring) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 8, but it appears they will try to play in the first preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles need to be careful here. They've already lost Jeremy Maclin (knee) and Arrelious Benn (knee) for the season due to injury. Johnson and Shepard are competing to replace Maclin in the starting lineup opposite DeSean Jackson.

CHI - Eben Britton could push for RT job

Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears OG Eben Britton could overtake OT J'Marcus Webb for the starting right tackle job at some point. Britton is performing well during training camp, and head coach Marc Trestman believes Britton will be one of the active offensive linemen on game days.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Britton has experience playing right tackle from his days in Jacksonville. If healthy he could be an upgrade over Webb.

CHI - GM thinks WR Devin Hester can be a factor again

Source: ESPNChicago.com

Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said he has seen something in WR Devin Hester during training camp that makes him believe Hester could be a factor as a returner again. 'I think he feels very good about where his body is at, where his mind is at, to have that type of season and we're looking forward to watching him,' Emery said. Hester has worked exclusively with the special teams unit during camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

One of the many moves the new regime made in Chicago was to eliminate Hester's role on offense. This has allowed him to solely focus on the return game. We'll see if it makes a difference in 2013.

CIN - RB Bernard Scott may start season on PUP list

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Joe Reedy

Cincinnati Bengals RB Bernard Scott (knee) started training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list and there is a good chance he will remain on the list when the regular season begins. Scott is rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Scott has good speed but has lost his role on the Bengals because they selected Giovani Bernard in the 2013 NFL draft. If put on the PUP list Scott would be forced out of action for the first six weeks of the regular season.

MIA - WR Mike Wallace's status for Friday uncertain

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

The Miami Dolphins still are trying to decide whether WR Mike Wallace (groin) will play in the second preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team needs to make sure Wallace is ready for the start of the regular season. They won't rush him back before he's ready to participate.

BUF - QB Kevin Kolb's status for preseason game uncertain

Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said he wants to see how QB Kevin Kolb (knee) practices Friday, Aug. 9, before deciding if Kolb will play in the first preseason game or how much playing time he could get.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kolb suffered a minor knee injury last week when he slipped on a wet rubber mat at practice. The team will monitor him closely and may decide to let him rest in week one of the preseason.

MIN - GM thinks WR Joe Webb can have a role on team

Source: 1500ESPN.com - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said he believes the team will be able to find a roster spot for WR Joe Webb because of the versatility he can bring. '[Webb] is one of those guys that can do a lot of different things most people can't in the league,' Spielman said. 'But the other thing we're going to take a hard look at is during these special teams drills, now we're not live yet, but just seeing him run down as an athlete on kickoff coverage, working him back some as a returner, putting him out as a gunner on the punt team, see if he can break down in space and make some tackles.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Webb is an incredible athlete but struggled to impress as QB. He's raw as a receiver and needs to show better route running and hands if he wants to develop into a quality target.

MIA - RB Lamar Miller expected to play

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller (ankle) is expected to play Friday, Aug. 9, against Jacksonville. Miller is dealing with a minor ankle issue.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller is set to be the Dolphins starter this year but perhaps the team wants him to get some more reps in the preseason for experience. We like Miller as a mid range RB2 with RB1 upside. His current ADP is RB20 and he's coming off the board at 3.04 in 12 team PPR leagues.

JAX - RB Maurice Jones-Drew ruled out

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) has been ruled out of the teamís first preseason game, according to head coach Gus Bradley.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No real surprise here. The Jaguars gain nothing by playing MJD in a meaningless preseason game. He's healthy enough to play but the team is wisely going to be cautious.

GB - TE Jermichael Finley praised

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Bob McGinn

Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley added about 10 pounds in the offseason and has improved his run blocking. QB Aaron Rodgers also praised Finley's improved route running. 'He's been running his routes really well,' Rodgers said. 'Something clicked last year midseason... and it's carried over this spring. He's got himself in unbelievable shape, and he's come in and been dominating out there. I'm really proud of him and the steps he's made.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Finley has upside but has yet to truly play up to his potential as a pro. We'll see if he can stay healthy and be an even bigger piece to the Packers passing game in 2013. Finley's current ADP is TE10 and he's coming off the board at 9.02 in 12 team PPR leagues.

CIN - DT Geno Atkins could see long-term deal

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The Cincinnati Bengals are making a push to sign DT Geno Atkins to a long-term deal.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The writing was on the wall for some time. Atkins has become the premiere player at his position and the Bengals have been setting themselves up to lock him down. They franchise tagged DE Michael Johnson but this is likely his final year with the club. Atkins is the centerpiece of the defense and should be compensated as such.

DEN - OLB Von Miller's appeal to be heard next week

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller's appeal of a four-game suspension is scheduled to be heard Aug. 15, according to sources.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Some Broncos teammates feel Miller will be able to have this suspension overturned. We'll see what the league has to say later this month.

SF - CB Eric Wright signed

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

The San Francisco 49ers have signed free-agent CB Eric Wright (Buccaneers) to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. The team also released CB Lowell Rose.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers promptly placed Wright (undisclosed) on the Non-Football Injury list. The team made a trade with the Buccaneers for Wright about three weeks ago, but he failed his physical and was released. After losing CB3 Chris Culliver (knee) there is now an opening for Wright when he's healthy. He'll battle guys like Nnamdi Asomugha and Perrish Cox for that spot.
