PIT - Stop contract talks with WR Mike Wallace for now

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

The Pittsburgh Steelers have halted contract talks with restricted free-agent WR Mike Wallace until he signs his tender offer and reports to training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pittsburgh is playing hardball with Wallace here. Head coach Mike Tomlin commented "What I'm going to do is work with Emmanuel Sanders. Because he's here, and be excited about doing it." This holdout could last a week or two into camp, and Wallace will miss valuable time learning Todd Haley's new offense. Once Wallace is back in the fold we feel the Steelers will pick up contract talks and sign him to a new deal.

NE - RB Joseph Addai released

Source: Patriots.com

The New England Patriots have released RB Joseph Addai.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots backfield gets a little less cramped here. Addai isn't the same player he used to be but could still be effective in pass protection and as a receiver out of the backfield. The market won't be hot for his services but a team like the Eagles may have interest in the veteran.

IND - Three cleared to practice

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Mike Chappell

Indianapolis Colts RB Delone Carter (thumb), OG Ben Ijalana (knee) and OT Anthony Castonzo (ankle) have been cleared to practice once training camp begins.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Carter here. He's lost valuable ground behind starter Donald Brown after missing the offseason workouts because of this thumb injury. We think Brown holds him off for the starting job and could be in for a big role in 2012. Browns ADP is RB30 and he's coming off the board in the early 7th round in most 12-team leagues. If he stays healthy and plays up to his potential he could easily outperform that spot.

TEN - WR Kenny Britt placed on PUP list

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon

The Tennessee Titans have placed WR Kenny Britt (knee) on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Britt can be activated at any time during training camp once he's able to pass a physical. His offseason surgery on both knees and July 20th DUI arrest drop his fantasy value to WR3. His ADP is WR30 right now and he's going off the board in the 7th round of most 12-team leagues.

JAX - Owner indicates no deal coming for RB Maurice Jones-Drew

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Vito Stellino

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan indicated the team is not planning to sign RB Maurice Jones-Drew to a new contract. It is not known if Jones-Drew will report to training camp on time.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This matches what Jaguars GM Gene Smith has stated as well. Jones-Drew is looking for a new deal after leading the league in rushing last season. This holdout could last well into training camp, and as of right now it looks like the team won't budge. If Jones-Drew were to miss any time backup Rashad Jennings would get to start.

CHI - WR Johnny Knox making progress

Source: ChicagoBears.com - Larry Mayer

Chicago Bears WR Johnny Knox (back) said he is making steady progress in his recovery from a serious back injury but is not sure when he will be cleared to practice. 'There's really no timetable,' Knox said. 'We're all taking our time on this. They're not rushing me. I'm not rushing myself. This was a serious injury, so we're all taking our time on this.' Knox has been able to do some light jogging.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Knox suffered a horrific looking back injury late last season and we'd be surprised if he plays at all in 2012.

TEN - QB Matt Hasselbeck listed as starter for now

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon

Tennessee Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck is listed as the starting quarterback on the team's first unofficial depth chart.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This competition will play out through training camp, but Titans head coach Mike Munchak has already hinted the tough early season schedule will factor into his decision. Even if Hasselbeck is the starter at the beginning of the season we know that Locker is the QB of the future and could take over at some point during the regular season.

DAL - Jason Garrett showing support for WR Dez Bryant

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Calvin Watkins

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett offered his support Wednesday, July 25, for troubled WR Dez Bryant, who is facing jail time and a suspension by the NFL for his arrest last week on a Class A misdemeanor for assaulting his mother. 'I have spoken to Dez a number of times since the incident last week,' Garrett said. 'First and foremost we support Dez Bryant's family. We support Dez. We support his mom, we want to help them in any way that we can. We have the resources to do that.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No charges will be filed by Bryant's mother but that doesn't mean NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell won't look into this situation. Bryant could be disciplined by the league for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

WAS - DE Osi Umenyiora says Robert Griffin must earn respect

Source: New York Post - Paul Schwartz

New York Giants DL Osi Umenyiora said he refuses to heap praise for Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III by referring to him as 'RG3,' even though that's basically what everyone calls him. 'Who is this RG3 guy you guys keep talking about?' Umenyiora said. 'You talking about Bob Griffin? You guys are giving him a cool nickname already and everything. When he does anything in the NFL we're gonna call him RG3. Right now he's Bob Griffin.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants have the Super Bowl rings and the swagger to back up this kind of talk. Griffin is an exciting playmaker who can make plays with his deep arm, bucket accuracy, and scrambling ability. We like the rookie as a QBBC candidate you can pick up in the 8th or 9th round.

CAR - WR Louis Murphy may not be ready for camp

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vittorio Tafur

Carolina Panthers WR Louis Murphy (hamstring) may not be ready for the start of training camp because he tweaked his hamstring last week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Injuries and inconsistencies have held back Murphy during his career, and that trend has carried over to the Panthers. Murphy gives the team veteran depth, but even if he makes the roster we don't see him having much fantasy value in 2012.

WAS - Still have concerns about Roy Helu

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins coaches still have some questions about RB Roy Helu. Helu struggles to consistently pick up chunks of yardage, and the team would like to see him do more than just take what's there and be able to make something out of nothing. There also are questions about his durability. Injuries hampered Helu late last season and kept him out of most of offseason workouts. Head coach Mike Shanahan said the questions about Helu's durability will remain until he can prove otherwise.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Helu is arguably the most talented back on the Redskins roster and could be very productive in that system. We may see the team use Tim Hightower on passing downs as a complementary back behind Helu. Shanahanigans will continue with the Washington ground game, but there comes a point when Helu is a value pick given his upside. Feel comfortable selecting Helu if he falls to the 7th or 8th round of your fantasy draft.

ARI - Players prefer QB John Skelton as starting QB?

Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Former NFL LB Willie McGinest, who now works as an analyst, said that he has friends on the Arizona Cardinals and that they've told him they prefer QB John Skelton as their starting quarterback over QB Kevin Kolb. 'Talking to some of my buddies down there, it seems like they're gravitating toward Skelton a little bit more,' McGinest said. 'He's a big quarterback, he's tough in the pocket, he has a carefree attitude, he really doesn't have any pressure. He didn't get a huge contract like Kolb did, and he's one of those guys that can command a huddle, can come in there, and guys just like his attitude.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Skelton has a strong arm and showed good leadership last season when thrust into the starting lineup. Kolb may have the edge in this competition because of the $7MM roster bonus the Cardinals paid him earlier this offseason. However, don't be surprised if Skelton gets into the lineup if/when Kolb struggles this year.

JAX - Starting QB job Blaine Gabbert's to lose

Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert will be given every opportunity to remain the team's starting quarterback this upcoming season. The Jaguars feel QB Chad Henne gives them a better backup situation; however, they don't head into training camp with a sense that Henne will wind up running the huddle. Head coach Mike Mularkey, coordinator Bob Bratkowski and quarterback coach Greg Olson were hired to effectively build Gabbert into the quarterback the team envisioned when it drafted him.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The reports about Gabbert's progress this offseason have been positive and we think he'll have a long leash in his second year. Henne is only veteran depth at the QB position and not a real threat to win the starting job. Gabbert would have to struggle mightily for several weeks before the team would consider benching him.

ARI - Beanie Wells placed on PUP

Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers

Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells (knee) was placed on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) list Tuesday, July 24, to start training camp. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said the move is not unexpected, and he doesn't anticipate Wells being on PUP for an extended time.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Wells is recovering from a cleanup procedure he had on his knee earlier this offseason. He'll compete for the starting job with second-year RB Ryan Williams who is recovering from the knee injury that cost him all of his rookie season in 2011.

NE - Brian Waters placed on Did Not Report list

Source: The Boston Globe - Greg A. Bedard

The New England Patriots have placed OG Brian Waters on the Did Not Report list after not reporting to training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Most don't believe Waters is retiring, and at age 35 he's still playing at a high level. The seasoned veteran doesn't need a bunch of reps to get back up to speed and is just getting some rest.

CHI - WR Johnny Knox placed on PUP list

Source: ChicagoBears.com - Larry Mayer

The Chicago Bears have placed WR Johnny Knox (back) on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Knox is essentially a lock to begin the regular season on the PUP list too. We'd be surprised if we see him at all during the 2012 season.

PIT - Max Starks to start on PUP list

Source: Beaver County Times - Mike Bires

Pittsburgh Steelers OT Max Starks (knee) will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Starks is a seasoned veteran and doesn't need a ton of reps in training camp. His absence will give more opportunity for rookie OT Mike Adams, who should start on the left side of the line for the Steelers.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco open to negotiations during season

Source: NFL.com

The agent for Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco, Joe Linta, said he is leaving the door open for contract negotiations to continue after the Ravens get training camp going. There is, again, no deadline in his mind. 'Not on our end ... Halloween, Thanksgiving, whenever, and Joe gives me the leeway to talk whenever,' Linta said. 'We're not creating any artificial deadlines. I do know once he's on the field, his focus is there, but we can keep working.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens are putting all their focus on signing Flacco to a new long-term deal. He's entering the final year of his rookie contract, and Flacco's agent wants his client to be paid like a top 5 QB in the league. We don't see that happening, but we do see an extension getting done before next offseason.

PHI - WR DeSean Jackson could be part-time punt returner

Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson will give up punt return duties most of the time; however, special teams coordinator Bobby April said he still thinks Jackson will have a role when the team needs a spark. 'DeSean will return some,' April said. 'But we'll primarily focus him on offense and hopefully find a guy that can do what he can do. We want to use him offensively as a weapon. There's some wear and tear to a guy his size ... Just the amount of running he does at practice. If you can eliminate some of it with the return game, if you can eliminate some of it in practice, he might be a little better replenished on game day. A little more explosive.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson is set to make a bigger impact as a Wide Receiver this year, but there are times when using him as a return man makes sense. He's an impact player who is a threat to score any time he touches the ball.

BUF - GM says time to win is now

Source: The Buffalo News - Mark Gaughan

Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix said it's time for the team to show improvement and start winning games, particularly with some big offseason additions like DL Mario Williams and DL Mark Anderson. 'Obviously, the offseason acquisitions helped, but I still think it was time - if we had not gotten Mario and Mark - it would have still been time to start winning some games,' Nix said. 'It's time to close it out and win some games. Until we do, it's not complete.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills have made power moves on the defensive side of the ball. They improved their front four and their secondary this offseason and it should help them compete in 2012. It won't surprise us if the Bills make the playoffs this year as a Wild Card team.

KC - Could be cautious with trio of players in camp

Source: ESPN.com - Bill Williamson

The Kansas City Chiefs expect TE Tony Moeaki (knee), SS Eric Berry (knee) and RB Jamaal Charles (knee) to be ready to play this season, but the team will be cautious. As a result, do not expect Moeaki, Berry and Charles to practice full go every day in training camp. The team will play it smart and have all three players ready for Week 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Getting all three back in action this season is one of the reasons why they could compete for the division title again in 2012. Berry plays like a young Ed Reed and is a huge impact player in the secondary. His return will help ease the pain of losing CB Brandon Carr in free agency. Charles is the big play back who will split touches with Peyton Hillis this year. Moeaki is a talented move TE but has a long injury history.

CAR - WR David Gettis injury update

Source: ESPN.com - Pat Yasinskas

Updating a previous item, Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said WR David Gettis (hamstring) tweaked a hamstring and that is why he was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list. The injury is in no way related to the torn anterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined Gettis last season. The team simply is being cautious with what he termed a minor injury. Hurney said he expects Gettis to come off the PUP list soon after training camp begins.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is always the story with Gettis. He's talented but oft-injured and that has prevented him from playing up to his potential. If Gettis is healthy he'll compete for the Panthers WR3 job behind Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell.

TEN - WR Mike Sims-Walker fails to impress

Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen

Free-agent WR Mike Sims-Walker (Jaguars) had a workout with the Tennessee Titans Tuesday, July 24, and it didn't go so good, according to reports.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Sims-Walker has failed to play up to his potential during his entire pro career and that's not going to change now.

DEN - OLB D.J. Williams will not see much time with starters

Source: The Denver Post - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox said LB D.J. Williams will not see much time with the first-team defense during training camp because he has been suspended for the first six games of the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos must prepare for life without Williams during the first six weeks of the season. We'll see Wesley Woodyard in place of Williams, and rookie Danny Trevathan could get on the field during obvious passing situations.

CIN - Dre Kirkpatrick expected to miss six weeks

Source: NFL.com

Cincinnati Bengals CB Dre Kirkpatrick (knee) is expected to miss six weeks with a fractured bone in his knee.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bengals will miss Kirkpatrick all through training camp and the preseason. This is a big blow for the Bengals secondary as Kirkpatrick was in line to compete for a starting job. Expect the team to be cautious with CB Leon Hall as he comes back from his Achilles' injury. Terrance Newman is likely to win the starting job opposite of Hall in camp.

BAL - S Ed Reed reports to camp

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Updating previous items, Baltimore Ravens FS Ed Reed has reported to training camp Wednesday, July 25.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We knew this would happen, despite Reed dropping hints about retirement via Twitter. He wanted a new contract, but with his age (and two-years remaining on his deal) that was never going to happen.
