SF - RB Frank Gore expected to see less carries

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore is expected to see his playing time decrease a bit this season because of the running backs the team added this offseason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers have a very strong group of RBs after adding Brandon Jacobs in free agency and LaMichael James in the draft. Kendall Hunter will also play a role as a complementary back. All this means fewer touches for Gore, but it should help him stay fresh all season long.

NFL - Suspended players to appeal

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith and LB Jonathan Vilma, Green Bay Packers DE Anthony Hargrove and Cleveland Browns LB Scott Fujita will appeal the suspensions they received for their participation in the Saints’ bounty program.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Now that suspensions have been handed out in the bounty scandal we expect a long, drawn out appeals process.

NO - ILB Jonathan Vilma banned for the year

Source: ESPN.com

The NFL suspended four players for their roles in the New Orleans Saints' bounty system, including LB Jonathan Vilma for the entire 2012 season. In addition to Vilma, DE Will Smith was suspended four games, Green Bay Packers DT Anthony Hargrove was suspended eight games and Cleveland Browns LB Scott Fujita three games.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The NFL's investigation came to the conclusion that Vilma was a ring leader of the bounty program alongside former Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams. Vilma's suspension will start immediately while the other players suspended will be able to participate in Offseason Training Activities. Free agent addition Curtis Lofton will shift to middle linebacker to replace Vilma.

NE - John Harbaugh clarifies remarks

Source: NFL.com

Updating a previous item, Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh called New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to explain comments he made about the team's championships being stained. Harbaugh released the following statement through the Ravens. 'While on the 98 Rock show this morning to talk about the run to honor O.J. Brigance and raise funds for ALS research, I answered a question about playing within the rules and referred to the perception that the Super Bowl championships won by the Patriots and Saints have a stain. My reference was to the perception out there that came as the result of the league’s actions. I could have been more clear that I was referring to those viewpoints. I totally believe that the Patriot and Saint coaches and players earned those championships. Bill (Belichick) and Sean (Payton) both know that. There has been some distortion about what I said ...'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If this was a scouting report on Harbaugh it would read "quick transition into his backpedal." Bill Belichick and the Patriots won't forget his original statement.

SF - Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James expected to compete for time

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RBs Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James may compete for playing time during training camp. Both could see time as the third-down running back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hunter is a more instinctive player who is an effective inside/out runner. James is better in space but not proven between the tackles. We have a feeling both will be used as complementary RBs this year.

SF - RB Brandon Jacobs could be used in short yardage

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Brandon Jacobs could be used in short yardage and goal line situations this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jacobs has greater size than any of the other backs behind Gore. He could give Gore a breather on first- and second-down as well.

NO - Talks with QB Drew Brees going slowly

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The New Orleans Saints have not made much progress in contract talks with franchise free-agent QB Drew Brees.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The talks are slow now but we have to think a new agreement will be reached before the start of training camp.

CIN - Mohamed Sanu could start Week 1

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Joe Reedy

Cincinnati Bengals WR Mohamed Sanu may be given the chance to start opposite WR A.J. Green when the regular season begins.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanu is a fantastic route runner with soft hands and smooth route running ability. He doesn't have blazing timed speed but plays faster with pads on.

PHI - QB Mike Kafka, QB Trent Edwards to compete for No. 2 job

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Jonathan Tamari

Philadelphia Eagles QBs Mike Kafka and Trent Edwards are expected to compete for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't expect the Eagles to carry four QBs so whoever loses the primary backup job will likely get cut. Rookie Nick Foles will be the developmental third-string QB. He's a tall, statuesque QB with a strong arm but he has a lot of improvements to make if he's ever going to see the field.

SD - WR Robert Meachem injury update

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem (knee) had arthroscopic knee surgery shortly after the end of the season and his recovery has been smooth so far. 'I'm going to do everything: OTAs, minicamp,' Meachem said. 'I'm feeling good. I'm in a new atmosphere. I'm getting all the help I need to make sure I'm good for the next year. Pretty much everything is good right now.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers lost Vincent Jackson in free agency and are trying to replace him with Meachem. This surgery is a common procedure and Meachem should be ready to participate in all the OTAs. We'll see if he can build chemistry with QB Philip Rivers quickly.

NYJ - Rex Ryan says QBs looking good

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said QB Tim Tebow has looked 'outstanding' in limited drills during offseason workouts. 'Same thing with Mark (Sanchez),' Ryan said Tuesday, May 1, quickly including his starting quarterback in the conversation. 'Both those guys are in phenomenal shape.' Ryan laughed when asked what he's seen from Tebow. 'I saw enough of Tebow last year, to be honest with you,' Ryan said, referring to the Jets' crushing loss to the Denver Broncos last season - a game than ended on Tebow's 95-yard touchdown drive. 'I still see that last drive.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Earlier this offseason Tebow worked with QB coach Noel Mazzonne, and sources say he would "wow" people with his improvement this year. We'll see if Tebow can work his way into the Jets starting lineup if Sanchez fails to impress early this year.

OAK - RB Ryan Grant might be top of wish list

Source: ANG Newspapers - Steve Corkran

Free-agent RB Cedric Benson (Bengals) reportedly wants to join the Oakland Raiders, but the team is more likely to pursue free-agent RB Ryan Grant (Packers) due to ties with general manager Reggie McKenzie, who was with the Green Bay Packers until this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Grant would give the Raiders veteran depth at the RB position. They traded for Mike Goodson and he should begin the season as the primary backup behind Darren McFadden.

OAK - RB Cedric Benson wants to join team

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Evan Silva

Free-agent RB Cedric Benson (Bengals) is reportedly hopeful of signing with the Oakland Raiders.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No interest from the Raiders (or any other team) at this time. Benson may have to wait for injuries to hit in training camp before getting a phone call.

MIA - Only two WRs guaranteed spots

Source: Palm Beach Post - Ben Volin

Miami Dolphins WRs Davone Bess and Brian Hartline are the only wide receivers on the roster that are guaranteed roster spots this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see Legedu Naanee likely stick around because of his special teams ability. That means players like Clyde Gates (KR), Roberto Wallace, Marlon Moore, B.J. Cunningham, Rishard Matthews, and Jeff Fuller will compete for the remaining roster spots. We could see guys like Fuller or Matthews getting put on the practice squad if they don't make the final roster.

MIN - QB Joe Webb focusing on being QB

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Jeremy Fowler

Minnesota Vikings QB Joe Webb said the team has told him to focus on being a quarterback and not to worry about being a wide receiver this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Webb will enter training camp as the team's second-string QB behind Christian Ponder. He's extremely athletic, has a strong arm, but struggles with accuracy problems.

NE - Will sign WR Jabar Gaffney

Source: ESPN.com - Josina Anderson

Free-agent WR Jabar Gaffney (Redskins) said he will be signing with the New England Patriots. Gaffney expects to sign a deal in the near future.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots have now added four WRs as free agents this offseason. Gaffney goes back to New England to join free agent additions Brandon Lloyd, Anthony Gonzalez, and Donte' Stallworth. He had a career high in catches and yards last year for the Redskins and it will be difficult to duplicate that this year in a crowded WR corps. Gaffney has good hands but offers little after the catch.

HOU - Two could be candidates for No. 3 WR job

Source: Houston Chronicle - Jerome Solomon

Houston Texans WRs Lestar Jean and DeVier Posey are expected to be candidates for the No. 3 wide receiver job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We give the edge to Jean here. He's got a size/strength advantage over Posey and provides more big play capability.

CIN - Mohamed Sanu a faster WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh?

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

The Cincinnati Bengals think third-round draft pick WR Mohamed Sanu is a slightly bigger and a little faster version of free-agent WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Raiders).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanu may not be the fastest WR in this draft class, but he's a fantastic route runner with soft hands and smooth run after the catch ability. He's position versatile as he can line up outside or in the slot. Sanu could be the starting WR opposite superstar A.J. Green.

DAL - Morris Claiborne wants to play offense as well

Source: NFL.com

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne said he would like to play as a wide receiver, in addition to cornerback. 'I would love to be a two-way player,' Morris Claiborne said. 'If they gave me that chance to be able to go both sides of the ball, I'll love it and I won't turn it down. I get in and give it 100 percent.' Claiborne is looking forward to working alongside WRs Miles Austin and Dez Bryant. 'I'm very excited to get right in and get around those guys. Try to learn as much as I can learn from the receiver standpoint to the cornerback standpoint, and both of those guys are great, big receivers, and I'm looking forward to getting some work in with them so they can make me better.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Claiborne was the best cover CB in this draft class and has the speed, transition, and quickness to be a shutdown corner. Just like Champ Bailey years ago, we could envision a few snaps on the offensive side of the ball.

KC - S Eric Berry will be ready for camp

Source: The Kansas City Star - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry (knee) said he expects to be at full strength when training camp begins.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for Berry and the Chiefs. It's easy to forget how hard Kansas City was hit with injuries to their best players last year.

WAS - Keenan Robinson to play inside

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

The Washington Redskins will be moving LB Keenan Robinson to inside linebacker after playing outside linebacker at the University of Texas. He believes he will be able to make the transition to the new position.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Interesting move here by the Redskins. Robinson is very athletic and play from sideline to sideline. However, he is unable to diagnose plays quickly and will too often be washed out of the play in the middle.

TB - See Lavonte David as three-down LB

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are consider keeping LB Lavonte David on the field for all three downs because of his pass coverage abilities.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

David isn't the biggest LB but he has the speed to attack both pass and run plays. He's got the quickness to shoot the gap and get after the QB. David can also makes plays as a chase LB who can get to the ballcarrier in the backfield.
