SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch arrested on suspicion of DUI

Source: The Seattle Times - Danny O'Neil

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch was arrested early Saturday, July 14, in Northern California on suspicion of driving under the influence. Lynch was suspended for violating the league's personal conduct policy in 2009 after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor weapons charge, and he missed the first three games because of that suspension.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynch has been in trouble in the past too many times to mention. A six or eight-game suspension would naturally follow from his last four-game suspension that was reduced to three games in 2009. It is unknown whether Roger Goodell will be lenient with Lynch if the charges are dropped or because it has been three years since he ran afoul of the law. Lynch's redraft stock has plummeted out of the first two rounds, and maybe farther. Rookie Robert Turbin could start in his absence, or the Seahawks could look the free agent market, including Cedric Benson.

TEN - WR Kenny Britt had surgery on both knees

Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Kenny Britt (knees) underwent arthroscopic surgery in May on his right knee after he tore his anterior and medial collateral ligaments last September. His recent knee surgery was to clean out his other knee.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's officially time to move Britt down to the bottom of the WR2 tier. All of this surgery rehab is a risk for a player who has been known to have a questionable work ethic in the past.

HOU - QB Matt Schaub not discussing foot injury

Source: The Associated Press

Houston Texas QB Matt Schaub (foot) did not answer questions about his right foot injury during a charity event Monday, July 16, saying that he will do so only when training camp starts at the end of next week. 'My foot is doing great,' Schaub said. 'We'll touch on that as we get going here at camp next week. Everything feels good and ready to go.' QB T.J. Yates will enter camp as the backup.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Schaub's foot isn't really a concern because he doesn't rely on his mobility as much as other quarterbacks. He is a very solid fantasy backup quarterback with starter upside.

DAL - More details on WR Dez Bryant

Source: WFAA - Rebecca Lopez and Jason Whitely

Updating previous reports, Desoto police say Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant pulled his mother's hair and slapped her across the face. The report says Bryant's mother had asked him to leave when he allegedly assaulted her.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

These details are only going to enhance a growing perception of Bryant as a bad seed. Look for Roger Goodell to address this incident one way or the other.

NE - WR Wes Welker might need to take hometown discount

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

Updating a previous report, the deadline for signing franchise players to long-term extensions came and went Monday, July 16, and the New England Patriots and WR Wes Welker failed to reach an agreement. He'll play under the franchise tag this season, and it would be a surprise if that happened again in 2013. Welker might need to decide between getting paid or playing with QB Tom Brady at a hometown discount for future years.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots have Julian Edelman and Jeremy Ebert developing on the roster and slot receivers aren't that scarce. The lethal two tight end pass offense means that New England doesn't need to have an ultratalented slot receiver to get production from the position. This could definitely be Welker's last year in Foxboro.

KC - Ricky Stanzi could become starter

Source: KCChiefs.com - Josh Looney

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli and quarterbacks coach have praised the work of QB Ricky Stanzi as he battles for the backup job with QB Brady Quinn. 'We drafted a quarterback last year who I truly believe has good ability and has the potential to start in this league,' Pioli said. 'I really do believe that.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of course he believes that, otherwise, the pick makes no sense. Stanzi will show how much of that is wishful thinking and how much of that is actual development during his first year in the league during preseason. It is important for fantasy because Matt Cassel is one of the most likely starting quarterbacks to be replaced because of play, not injury.

NFL - WR Terrell Owens training with current players

Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Free-agent WR Terrell Owens (Bengals) worked out with New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, Oakland Raiders QB Carson Palmer and free-agent QB Kyle Boller (Raiders) a few weeks ago, and Owens worked out with Seattle Seahawks WR Golden Tate Monday, July 16. Owens also trained with Carolina Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen Monday.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Owens probably won't get signed during training camp, but if a team suffers a major injury at wide receiver and has championship aspirations, he could get a look. We have little doubt that he can still physically hack it in the NFL. It's just a question of whether a team would be willing to take on the distraction/disruption of adding Owens.

PIT - Max Starks re-signs

Source: KFFL.com

The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed OT Max Starks to a one-year deal Tuesday, July 17. Financial terms were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Starks will provide depth at right and left tackle and an insurance policy in case second-round pick Mike Adams isn't ready to start at left tackle. He has been a starter on both recent Steelers Super Bowl champions and should aid in Adams development in addition to providing continuity if the team needs to delve into their depth on the offensive line because of injuries.

NYJ - WR Santonio Holmes changes stance on two QBs

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Santonio Holmes said he thinks QBs Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow can be effective this year because everything will be scripted, with Tebow operating on a set number of plays. Without that dynamic, Holmes doesn't think a two-QB system can work in the NFL. 'You have to allow one quarterback to get into the rhythm of a game and it starts from the preparation in practice,' Holmes said. '(It's) knowing the first couple of plays that he's going to take these reps, it's getting the feel for coming onto the field with the crowd awaiting you, it's making the mistakes early in the game to finishing the games at the end.' Holmes expressed confidence that Tebow will execute the plays that he's called upon in certain wild-cat situations. Holmes praised both QBs during Sanchez's annual passing camp last week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At least Holmes is showing that he'll make nice publicly when the team asks him to. We have a feeling his first comments reflect his true beliefs.

MIN - WR Jerome Simpson looks to give receiving corps big boost

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Outside of Minnesota Vikings WR Percy Harvin, no other receiver topped 40 catches or 500 yards in 2012. The team added the speedy WR Jerome Simpson, and offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave is very excited about his addition, especially because of his speed on the outside. He also said there is a nice rapport building between Simpson and QB Christian Ponder. 'I think they sense we're going to give both of them a chance to make a ton of plays,' Musgrave said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Simpson was drawing rave reviews in minicamp and OTAs. He'll benefit from Percy Harvin being the focus of opposing defenses. He's an excellent late sleeper pick in deep leagues and deep dynasty stash.

MIN - Greg Childs looking to get speed back

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Minnesota Vikings WR Greg Childs (knee) was slowed in 2011 as the result of a torn patellar tendon suffered in 2010. Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave is looking to take advantage of his speed, as long as he is healthy. 'He's got the speed to get down the field. But he also has the size to muscle little DBs at the same time,' Musgrave said. 'We're counting on the human body healing up. With the significant injury he had, it's usually a 15-to-18 month healing process. And he's just getting to that threshold.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Childs had first/second-round talent before his knee injury. If he can get all of his explosiveness back, he could be a Malcom Floyd-type in the Vikings offense. He will get a chance to play while Jerome Simpson is suspended for the first three games of the season.

MIN - Excited about TE John Carlson in red zone

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave is excited about the addition of TE John Carlson and his potential in the red zone. 'In the red zone, he has a sense for zone and an ability to slide into an opening and then make a tough, contested catch,' Musgrave said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't let this cool your excitement about Kyle Rudolph, who is ready for a big second-year breakout. Carlson will be the secondary receiving tight end and the Vikings have a shortage of proven wide receivers. Rudolph is an excellent upside backup fantasy tight end in redraft leagues.

KC - No deal for WR Dwayne Bowe before deadline

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

The Kansas City Chiefs and WR Dwayne Bowe failed to reach an agreement on a long-term contract before the deadline Monday, July 16. Bowe might be entering his final season with the team, as the club continued to grab young receivers in the NFL Draft. Bowe might be a very attractive free-agent when he hits the market after this season, especially since several receivers signed long-term deals this offseason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could be Bowe's last year in Kansas City. Jon Baldwin dynasty owners have to be pleased with this development.

DET - DE Cliff Avril not mad with lack of new deal

Source: The Associated Press

Detroit Lions DL Cliff Avril isn't upset that he wasn't able to reach a new deal with the team before the deadline Monday, July 16. 'I'm not mad,' Avril said. 'Business is business. You can't take it personal.' He will play under the franchise tag this year with a $10.6 million deal.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Avril got a very fair offer of about 30 million dollars over three years with about 20 million guaranteed from the Lions. He definitely should not be mad at them. He might be mad at himself for passing on the offer if he doesn't play up his 2011 level this year.

SF - Weren't very close with S Dashon Goldson

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

The San Francisco 49ers and SS Dashon Goldson were never really close to an agreement on a long-term contract before the deadline Monday, July 16, according to sources.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Safeties are having trouble getting big money deals and Goldson was an afterthought on the free agent market just a year ago. Playing under the franchise tag this year is probably the best situation for both Goldson and the 49ers.
