Hi Folks,

Good Tuesday to you. Let's open with a shoutout to my Buddies Ian Allan and Bruce Taylor of Fantasy Index Magazine. Big day as the new issue was in my mailbox today. Sweet.

Later today I was digging through some old files and came across this gem from 1995. How many of you Old Timers remember that one?

OK, enough nostalgia. We've got the news and notes for you so let's get to it.

A. Congrats to Footballguy Cecil Lammey - ESPN Syndication!
Big Hat Tip to my Buddy and long time Footballguy Staffer Cecil Lammey. His Saturday radio show he does in Denver, "Riding Shotgun with Cecil Lammey" has been picked up for National Syndication with ESPN Radio. Super cool. Cecil's one of the hardest working guys I know and a great example of a guy that's set his mind on something and then worked his butt off to make it happen. Congrats, my Brother. I'm proud of you.

ATL - Coach explains possible drop in carries for RB Michael Turner

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons running backs coach Gerald Brown said the team considered reducing the number of carries RB Michael Turner receives per game because they want him to stay strong throughout the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Falcons are looking to make another playoff push in 2012 and would like to have Turner near full strength for the postseason. He won't get 300 carries this year, but could still get around 250 for the year. The touches that don't go to Turner will now go to second-year RB Jacquizz Rodgers if he can beat out Jason Snelling for the backup job.

DEN - PK Matt Prater agrees to long-term contract

Source: DenverBroncos.com - Stuart Zaas

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with franchise free-agent PK Matt Prater on a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Prater is a big part of their team as he's a clutch Kicker who can knock in game winning Field Goals consistently. With Peyton Manning running the show Prater should also be counted on to kick more Extra Points than he did in 2011.

CHI - RB Matt Forte says he is in great shape

Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jon Greenburg

Chicago Bears franchise free-agent RB Matt Forte said he is the healthiest he has been in a while because sitting out the last four games of the season allowed him to heal injuries other than his knee injury. 'I've been lifting a little harder this offseason and running more,' Forte said. 'Just because I was able to heal a lot earlier having to sit out the last four games and having that time, and I was able to heal from the other injuries.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It sounds like Forte and the Bears may be coming together on a new contract before the July 16th deadline. This would mean no training camp holdout for Forte. We think the Bears could use Michael Bush a little more than some think to help keep Forte fresh for a Super Bowl run.

CHI - Deal with RB Matt Forte expected by July 16

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

A deal between the Chicago Bears and RB Matt Forte is expected to get done by July 16. Forte said over the weekend that he will play this season, and will not sit out the regular season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

All teams have until the July 16th deadline to sign Franchise Players to long-term deals. This is great news for the Bears and Forte, and a sign he won't miss any training camp. The team is concerned about his durability and may choose to use Michael Bush a little more during the year to keep Forte fresh for a playoff run.

KC - WR Dwayne Bowe not expected to hold out

Source: ESPN.com - Bill Williamson

Kansas City Chiefs franchise free-agent WR Dwayne Bowe has not given any indication that he will hold out during the season even though he has not signed his franchise tender at this point and did not participate in any offseason workouts.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've heard little about Bowe's contract situation this offseason. The deadline to sign Franchise Players to a long-term contract is July 16th. Bowe may have to play through his one-year franchise tender before getting the long-term contract he desires.

NYG - WR Domenik Hixon may be favorite for No. 3 WR job

Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano

New York Giants WR Domenik Hixon may enter training camp as the favorite for the No. 3 wide receiver job over WRs Rueben Randle, Ramses Barden and Jerrel Jernigan.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hixon has a lot of talent and versatility as a WR but injuries have prevented him from playing up to his potential. He could begin the season as the team's WR3 but we feel rookie Rueben Randle will eventually take over at that position.

GB - Expected to keep two QBs

Source: ESPNMilwaukee.com - Jason Wilde

The Green Bay Packers are expected to keep only two quarterbacks on their final roster unless QB B.J. Coleman has a very impressive preseason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Coleman as a deep dynasty prospect to keep an eye on. If he doesn't make the final roster the Packers could always choose to develop him on the Practice Squad. Coleman has a rocket arm, and executes play fakes just like his idol Peyton Manning.

MIA - Ryan Tannehill has shown flashes in workouts

Source: NFL.com

Miami Dolphins WR Brian Hartline said QB Ryan Tannehill has shown flashes during offseason workouts, adding Tannehill has a presence about him. 'He definitely has a presence,' Hartline said of Tannehill. 'Which is great. He's a guy that he knows what he wants, he knows the offense. I think that definitely helps him a lot ... For me, I feel like the first couple of weeks, you hope to see flashes. Because you've got to have something there, and there's no doubt in my mind that I saw flashes. The ball coming out of his hand is good, is great. His timing is really good. On a couple of routes, you can tell he's really comfortable. He can plant that foot and release without any gather step, so there's definitely some flashes.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We graded Tannehill's pocket presence higher than any other QB in this draft class. He's calm in the pocket, and has the athleticism to elude the rush and scramble for yards if necessary. We saw Andy Dalton show great composure last year, and Tannehill has a better natural skill set than Dalton.

MIA - Ryan Tannehill not expected to start

Source: Palm Beach Post - Brian Biggane

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill is not in the running to start right now due to his untimely mistakes, particularly when throwing into traffic. Head coach Joe Philbin has made it clear that turnovers will not be tolerated, so for the time being Tannehill will continue to work as the No. 3 quarterback.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Right now Matt Moore and David Garrard should be the starter for the Dolphins. Maybe at some point during the year Tannehill can take over as the starter as he's the team's future. Tannehill is well versed in this offense because Mike Sherman (his former college coach) is the Dolphins new Offensive Coordinator.

OAK - Juron Criner a starting WR?

Source: SportingNews.com

Oakland Raiders WR Juron Criner, who was impressive during offseason workouts, could potentially challenge starting WRs Denarius Moore or Darrius Heyward-Bey if they struggle.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We think a starting lineup of Criner and Moore would be especially dangerous for the Raiders. Criner reminds those in the scouting community of the Saints Marques Colston because of his size, wingspan, and fearless nature when catching passes over the middle.

GB - Three expected to be in running for No. 3 WR job

Source: ESPN.com - Kevin Seifert

Green Bay Packers WRs James Jones, Randall Cobb and Donald Driver are candidates to become the No. 3 wide receiver during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see Cobb emerge in his second season. Cobb is an ultra fast, quick, and elusive WR who is a dangerous threat after the catch. His skill set makes the most sense as a WR3.

SEA - Mike Williams could be on roster bubble

Source: ESPN.com - Mike Sando

Seattle Seahawks WR Mike X. Williams could be on the roster bubble during training camp if he is outperformed by WR Kris Durham during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams had a breakout season in 2010 but failed to continue that trajectory in 2011. Durham only played three games during his rookie season before being lost for the year with a shoulder injury. He's a smooth athlete with good hand/eye coordination and sharp route running ability.

CLE - Trent Richardson waiting to sign

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson said he's waiting for the top two overall draft picks - Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck and Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III - to sign before completing his deal. 'For me, I think I'm really just waiting on one and two to get done,' Richardson said. 'Then when the big guys get done, I can sign.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With the new rookie wage scale we don't foresee any of the top picks missing time in training camp due to contract negotiations.

CLE - Brandon Weeden eager to sign a deal

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden said he is hoping to get a deal done prior to training camp. When asked for an update about the status of his contract, Weeden replied, 'What's the politically correct answer here? I wish it was done, but I don't know. It'll get done. We're working. It takes two sides, though.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Browns are going to use Weeden as their starting QB, and they can't afford for him to miss any time in training camp. They'll get a deal done with him in the near future.

SF - TE Vernon Davis feels team is Super Bowl material

Source: The Boston Globe - Greg A. Bedard

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis feels the team is a Super Bowl contender, and he isn't afraid to voice his opinion. 'I don't want to sound too cocky, but I think we have the potential,' Davis said. 'I think we have a lot of potential and I'm not wrong for saying that because of the talent we have. I can't that we're going to win the Super Bowl. All I can say is that I strongly believe that we have the team to get to that point. It makes me excited because I know what we have going forward.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis came on strong in the postseason last year, and could carry that momentum over to this season. We agree with Davis and see the 49ers as a Super Bowl contender because of their elite defense and strong ground game led by Frank Gore. If QB Alex Smith can get the most out of his new weapons in the passing game then a championship might be in their future.

DAL - Could show interest in Josh Gordon

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Calvin Watkins

The Dallas Cowboys could consider taking Baylor WR Josh Gordon in the 2012 NFL supplemental draft.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon has a fantastic size/speed combination that will interest a lot of teams. If the Cowboys added Gordon he could potentially compete with Kevin Ogletree, Dwayne Harris, and Danny Coale to be the team's WR3.

NFL - Josh Gordon to enter supplemental draft

Source: thesidelineview.com - Adam Caplan

Baylor WR Josh Gordon will enter the 2012 NFL supplemental draft.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules as he moved from Baylor to Utah. He was suspended by Baylor for the 2011 season because of violating team rules. Gordon has an amazing size/speed combination. He's 6'4" 225 lbs and was clocked in the 4.3s running the 40-yard dash at Baylor. We could see the Redskins use a late-round pick on Gordon so he could be reunited with QB Robert Griffin III.

MIA - RB Steve Slaton expected to be on bubble

Source: ProFootballWeekly.com

Miami Dolphins RB Steve Slaton is expected to be on the roster bubble during training camp. He may compete with RBs Marcus Thigpen, Jonas Gray and Jerome Messam for the No. 4 running back job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Slaton could make the team as the No. 4 RB because of his versatility and explosive playmaking ability. He won't have much fantasy value unless a lot of injuries hit the depth chart in front of him.

CHI - Gabe Carimi confident in knee

Source: ProFootballWeekly.com

Chicago Bears OT Gabe Carimi (knee) did not do a lot during offseason workouts but is confident that his knee is strong enough to participate in training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A healthy Carimi is a huge boost for the Bears Offensive Line. He'll work as the primary protector for QB Jay Cutler on the right side of the line.

ARI - TE Todd Heap does not appear to be cut candidate

Source: ESPN.com - Mike Sando

Arizona Cardinals TE Todd Heap does not appear to be in danger of being released during training camp unless he is unable to stay healthy. Heap is scheduled to make $2 million this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Heap misses time it will create more of an opportunity for Rob Housler. We like Housler's skill set as a move TE because he has the speed to attack the deep middle seam of the defense. Housler is a nice buy low candidate in deep dynasty leagues.

ARI - Like WR Andre Roberts in slot

Source: ESPN.com - Mike Sando

The Arizona Cardinals believe WR Andre Roberts is ideally suited to be a slot receiver. Roberts likely will play there this season with WR Michael Floyd playing on the outside.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Roberts as a slot WR too because of his run after the catch ability. Early Doucet could start ahead of Floyd on the depth chart to begin the season because of his experience. The Cardinals have said they won't rush Floyd, but we could see the rookie emerge as their WR2 before the end of the season.

TB - Two competing for backup QB job

Source: Buccaneers.com

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Dan Orlovsky and Brett Ratliff will compete for the primary backup quarterback job during training camp. The team likely will decide whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on their final roster based on how Orlovsky and Ratliff perform.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Orlovsky has more experience, but Ratliff has a better natural skill set. The edge has to go to Orlovsky right now, but keep an eye on this battle in training camp. Ratliff's incredibly strong arm could work well in the play action system new Bucs head coach Greg Schiano has installed.

PIT - RB Jonathan Dwyer dropping weight

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Mark Kaboly

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer has lost 20 pounds from his high of 240 pounds and is in better shape. Dwyer is ready to play a significant part in the team's offense this upcoming season. 'I am just realizing how much it takes to get where you are in this league and how hard you have to work and push yourself,' Dwyer said. 'This is my year to prove something to myself, the league, to the organization, that I am worth more than what I was.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dwyer is an interesting prospect to keep an eye on. The Steelers will start Isaac Redman at RB this year while Rashard Mendenhall recovers from his knee injury. However, if Redman gets banged up or is ineffective the team could turn to Dwyer to carry the load. Dwyer is a physical runner with deceptive speed in the open field. He's the type of back who gets stronger as the game goes on, and can wear down a defense with his bruising style.

TEN - Have big plans for Taylor Thompson

Source: SportingNews.com

Tennessee Titans TE Taylor Thompson was impressive throughout the team's offseason workouts. According to sources, Thompson showed elite athleticism similar to New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski. The Titans believe Thompson could become a dynamic offensive player and be special in the long term if he continues to develop.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Our very own Cecil Lammey watched Thompson make the transition from DE to TE during the week of practice for the Players All Star Classic earlier this year. He was impressed with Thompson's size, athleticism, and run after the catch ability. Thompson needs to refine his route running, but makes for an interesting prospect to add in deep dynasty leagues because of his upside.

NE - QB Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett to be showcased Aug. 20?

Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

The New England Patriots might consider turning over the second preseason game to QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett for the preseason game Aug. 20 against the Philadelphia Eagles. It is a nationally-televised game, which would give the team a chance to show the rest of the NFL what they have and to generate some interest in Hoyer or Mallett for a possible deal.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots were able to get a second-round pick for former backup Matt Cassel, but we don't think Hoyer or Mallett would command that type of price. Hoyer is a smart, athletic QB who plays a lot like the Seahawks Matt Flynn. Mallett has an incredibly strong arm and good deep accuracy. He's not mobile, and is a traditional pocket passer.

CLE - QB Colt McCoy could become distraction

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Colt McCoy is more likely to be traded because he is popular in the locker room, and he has plenty of fan support as well. If QB Brandon Weeden struggles early on, it could create fan controversy for those calling for the backup.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The interest in McCoy is cold right now but that could change once training camp hits. If/when the Browns trade away McCoy they'll use Seneca Wallace as the veteran backup behind Brandon Weeden.

DAL - Bruce Carter's performance may determine starter at ILB

Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano

Dallas Cowboys LB Bruce Carter will be competing with LB Dan Connor for the one of the starting inside linebacker job but his performance during the preseason may have more importance in the competition than Connor's performance.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Connor is the seasoned veteran and could begin the year as the starter while Carter gets used to the pro game. If Carter excels during the preseason he could earn the starting job for week one.

SF - Return all 11 starters on defense

Source: The Boston Globe - Greg A. Bedard

The San Francisco 49ers return all 11 starters on defense, and DL Justin Smith is excited to get going. 'The mindset I've kind of been spreading to the guys is, your team isn't always going to be stacked, we're not going to be able to keep this team together forever,' Smith said. 'So let's go out and try to hammer this thing home.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It was amazing that San Francisco was able to keep all their key defensive positions in free agency. They'll have a world class defense again in 2012, and with the improvements in the passing game it could help them get to the Super Bowl.
