KC - RB Charles likely to see light workload for OTAs

Source: Josh Looney - KCChiefs.com

Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel plans to handle the return of Pro Bowl RB Jamaal Charles cautiously this spring.

"You don't want him coming back too soon and then reinjuring himself," Crennel said from the NFL Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, Florida. "You talk to them about that, you have the trainer talk about it, his physician has to talk about it because when they do start feeling good, they want to do more.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So far so good, for Charles.

"Jamaal stopped by the office recently," Crennel said. "He came in for a check-up and he stopped by the office and I had a chance to talk to him and he was saying that his knee is doing well. He is running straight ahead, so he is making good progress.

"The trainer says he is on schedule, his rehab people say he is on schedule, so we're excited about that news. Now, with that being said, you always have to wait until you get them on the field to see how they really do, but it's optimistic right now." We'll be watching this one closely for you this spring and summer.

NO - Joe Vitt named interim head coach

Source: NewOrleansSaints.com

The New Orleans Saints have announced linebackers coach Joe Vitt will become the interim head coach once head coach Sean Payton begins his one-year suspension.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Saints O-line coach Aaron Kromer is expected to take over the head coaching duties for the first six games of the season when interim head coach Joe Vitt has to serve his six-game suspension. Have we ever had an "interim, interim" head coach in the NFL?

DEN - WR Demaryius Thomas will not miss Tim Tebow

Source: NFL.com

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas does not sound upset over the departure of former QB Tim Tebow. Thomas felt Tebow was often unable to find him in the passing game, even though Tebow threw him that famous slant pass in overtime of the Wild Card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. 'I ain't going to say I was sad because the only thing they remember is that pass,' Thomas said. 'You gotta go back and look at the rest of the games. I wasn't getting no balls and you had to make some of these plays where some players were open and he is not making the throws. But I don't want to talk bad about Tim, but hey I am happy we got Peyton.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We feel Thomas could end the season as a top 5 fantasy WR with Peyton Manning under center. He could finish top 10 at least if he plays up to his potential. Number one WRs have averaged over 90 catches and over 1,000-yards catching passes from Manning.

PIT - Teams looking into trading for WR Mike Wallace

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Mark Kaboly

The Pittsburgh Steelers are being contacted about the possibility of trading for restricted free-agent WR Mike Wallace. Wallace is expected to sit out offseason workouts because he has not received a long-term contract.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wallace is looking for a new deal that could pay him over $10MM per season. If the Steelers are unwilling to do that then perhaps a trade is inevitable. A team acquiring Wallace would have to give him that desired contract in addition to meeting the Steelers price in trade. If anything happens it should happen before the NFL Draft.

NFL - Ryan Tannehill the next QB JaMarcus Russell?

Source: Twitter

Former NFL head coach Brian Billick said Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill reminds him of former Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell. Billick said both players 'shot up draft boards based on how they looked in shorts.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's foolish to make this comparison as Russell was the biggest draft bust in NFL history. I don't know if this was Billick not meaning what he said or if it was an attention grab. It certainly had people talking. Tannehill has limited experience, but on film he certainly looks the part of a franchise QB. In fact, his in the pocket movement may be the best of any QB in this draft class. I'd be shocked if his work ethic turns out to be anything like Russell's was.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning working with WR Eric Decker

Source: ESPN.com

Denver Broncos WR Peyton Manning called his offseason throwing regimen with WR Eric Decker both 'rewarding' and 'critical,' adding that the workouts are helping him back into the groove. Manning said his work with Decker is not only helping the new teammates establish a connection but will mean wins when the season starts. 'You don't feel it necessarily right now, but you know that it's going to pay dividends for you in the fall...' Manning said. 'And you say, you know, 'We worked on that back in April and May, and that time we put in was worth it because it came on a critical third-down conversion or a touchdown pass.''

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Decker is set to have a career year with Peyton Manning under center for the Broncos. We could see Decker finished as a top 20 fantasy WR if he stays healthy and plays up to his potential.

MIA - QB Matt Moore wants fair shot to compete

Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel - Izzy Gould

Miami Dolphins QB Matt Moore said he is looking for a fair shot to compete for the team's starting quarterback job in 2012 after the team signed QB David Garrard this offseason. 'I was fully expecting a quarterback competiton. I still am,' Moore said. 'I get it, I understand and in any case as a player you just want a fair shot to show your talent and prove to the coaches you can win or lead this team to win. That's all I was hoping for, and I think that's the situation we have here.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Dolphins may not be done adding QBs to the mix either. There's a good chance they select Ryan Tannehill (Texas A&M) with the 8th overall pick.

HOU - QB Vince Young wants to join team

Source: NFL.com

Free-agent QB Vince Young (Eagles) said he would like to play for the Houston Texans, his hometown team. 'I would love to play at home. That would be a dream come true and anything I can do to help out with the team,' Young said. However, Young added he 'definitely' sees himself as a starter in the league and would be happy to compete for a job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Young still feels like he could be a starter in the league, but the market has been ice cold for his services. The Texans released Matt Leinart but have T.J. Yates as a backup QB behind Matt Schaub. Young will make it to a camp, but we're not sure if the Texans want him on their squad.

IND - Colts Owner touts Ryan Tannehill

Source: ESPN.com

The Colts owner called Tannehill the "hidden gem" of the draft and suggested that if a team wants to select him, it will have to talk trade with the Minnesota Vikings, who own the No. 3 pick.

"Tannehill is a hidden gem in this draft, a quiet secret who was always sneaking up to #3..you want him,you better talk to Zigi The Biggie!," Irsay wrote Wednesday afternoon.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

"talk to Zigi the Biggie!" Nice. I wonder if Peyton Manning and Bill Polian read some of Irsay's tweets and are thankful they don't have to deal with that anymore...

NFL allows teams to accept limited ads for licensed casinos

Source: AP

The Associated Press reports, "The NFL will allow teams to accept advertisements for casinos and other state-licensed gambling-related establishments during the next two seasons.

"Those ads can appear only in game programs, on local radio broadcasts and in the upper bowl and inner concourses of stadiums.

"We remain steadfast in our opposition to the proliferation of gambling on NFL games," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said. "There is a distinction between accepting advertising in a limited fashion and gambling on the outcome of our games."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The cynic in me smiles a bit at this one. It looks like they're remaining "steadfast in their opposition" to the gambling but are glad to take their money and promote the casinos. I think I need a new dictionary for "steadfast"...

CAR - WR Steve Smith signs 3 year extension

Source: AP

Smith, who turns 33 in May, signed a contract extension Tuesday that will likely keep him in Carolina at least through 2015 and likely for the remainder of his career.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good for Smith and good for Cam Newton. Smith is the picture of the scrappy guy that makes the most of what he has.

"The coaches and players in this organization make it real easy to re-sign here," Smith said. "I respect coach Rivera a lot. He's pushed me to grow and examine what options I can bring to the table. It's been very enjoyable. It's a great opportunity to build a stronger foundation to what we're already building."

DAL - Have considered trading RB Felix Jones

Source: Calvin Watkins - ESPNDallas.com

The Dallas Cowboys have had internal discussions about the possibility of trading RB Felix Jones this offseason because they do not see him as a feature back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones could have some decent value on the trade block. He's explosive and is a gamebreaker who can help as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. His injury history is long, but there might be a team willing to take a chance on him.

TEN - QB Matt Hasselbeck on a short leash

Source: Gregg Rosenthal - NFL.com

Tennessee Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck will be on a short leash with the team this upcoming season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here considering the way Locker looked last year. He showed great composure as a rookie and could win over the starting job in training camp.

NYG - OLB Keith Rivers officially acquired

Source: Twitter

Updating previous reports, the New York Giants have officially acquired LB Keith Rivers from the Cincinnati Bengals for a 2012 fifth-round draft choice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This might as well be a sixth-round pick as it's the final pick in the fifth-round. A savvy move for the Giants here as Rivers is a quality run defender when he's healthy. Injuries have prevented him from playing up to his potential as a pro. Rivers should get plugged in on the weak side, with Mathias Kiwanuka playing on the strong side.
