CLE - Trent Richardson expected to be limited Week 1

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson (knee) is expected to play Week 1 but likely will have his workload limited. He probably will be limited until he is recovered from knee surgery.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Browns are going to be careful with their superstar RB. Richardson has Adrian Peterson-like ability and can be a fantasy stud. However, to begin the year they'll likely ease him into action. This leads to an increased role for guys like Montario Hardesty and Brandon Jackson early on.

DAL - TE Jason Witten 50-50 to play Week 1

Source: ESPN.com - Matt Mosley

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (spleen) is considered 50-50 to play in Week 1, according to the team, although many don't expect him to be ready until Week 2.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If he does play we would expect a limited amount of snaps. The Cowboys dodged a bullet when team doctors decided Witten didn't need surgery on his spleen.

PHI - QB Michael Vick says he is 80 percent

Source: USA Today - Robert Klemko

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick (ribs) said he is around 80 percent healthy at this point but is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season. Vick indicated he will not change how he plays because he does not know what is going to happen during a play. 'I just let everything happen in that moment. I can't go to the line dictating what I'm going to do,' Vick said. 'I can't go to the line trying to predict everything that I'm going to do. That would hurt you're game a little bit, because I might miss somebody getting open. I have to go through my progressions to the best of my abilities.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rib injuries are very painful, and it will take time for his injury to heal. He'll be ready for the regular season, but Vick's durability issues are a big concern for fantasy owners.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson injury update

Source: Pioneer Press - Jeremy Fowler

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (knee) has reportedly experienced no swelling in his left knee the day after practices, a good sign for the running back as he hopes to be ready for Week 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Very good sign for Peterson here. The days of getting him in the third-round of your fantasy draft are over. Peterson is now coming off the board in the mid second-round. The team may ease him into the action the first month of the season but it may not be long before Peterson is back to being himself. Grab him as a value now and reap the rewards later.

PIT - RB Rashard Mendenhall unsure when he'll be ready

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Ralph N. Paulk

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall (knee) does not know when he will be ready to return to action. Mendenhall acknowledges he must remain patient in his rehab. 'To be real, I don't know when I'll be ready to play,' Mendenhall said. 'I'm just working with the training staff and doing what I can to get on the field.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd be surprised if Mendenhall played in the first four weeks of the season. Isaac Redman will fill in for Mendenhall during the month of September but after that it could become a RBBC until Mendenhall is up to speed. Redman could be a decent RB2 during the first month, but after that his fantasy value will likely take a big hit. Mendenhall is worth a late round flier in your draft.

WAS - Two RBs to sit out preseason game

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said RBs Roy Helu (Achilles') and Evan Royster (knee) will not play in the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 25, because of injuries.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Without Helu and Royster in the lineup we'll see more from guys like Alfred Morris. There's some fantasy value to be mined here with the Washington RBs but we say just avoid the headache. The starter at the beginning of the year may not be the starter during the fantasy playoffs, and the lead RB may change every few weeks.

GB - RB James Starks on the bubble

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Rob Reischel

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (toe) could be released by the team. Starks has played just 16 games in his first two seasons, and he is currently battling a turf toe. At some point, his inability to stay on the field will cost him a roster spot.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Starks is big and fast in a straight line but he's not a special runner. He lacks elusiveness and creativity in the open field and struggles to stay healthy. His injury history dates back to his days in college at Buffalo where he was out for his entire senior season with a shoulder injury. Cedric Benson is in line to be the team's starter and primary ball carrier in 2012.

NYJ - CB Darrelle Revis questions offensive talent

Source: NFL.com

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis said QB Mark Sanchez must emerge into a top-10 NFL quarterback this season; however, Revis is uncertain whether the team has enough offensive talent surrounding Sanchez. 'I don't know,' Revis said. 'You've got to do what's best for the team, and I don't know if we've been wise in that department.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets have all the bravado in the world, but what they lack is dangerous offensive weapons and cohesion as a unit. Sanchez is struggling and could be replaced by Tim Tebow later in the year. Their ground game needs a jump start as Shonn Greene has failed to impress. And finally, their WR corps lacks experience and superior talent behind Santonio Holmes. It could be a long year for the Jets.

NO - Darren Sporles not concerned about injury

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune - Larry Holder

New Orleans Saints RB Darren Sproles (knee) said his sore knee will not be a problem once the regular season starts. The team is simply being cautious with the running back. 'If I had to play, I could,' Sproles said. 'But this is the thing. They don't want to rush me right now. They see it as preseason games so there's no use in risking it.' Sproles added he'll feel even better about his health once he fully returns to practice. He said timing may be the only thing he'll need to catch up with on offense and special teams.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sproles would play if this was the regular season. A knee injury is a big concern for a quick twitch player like Sproles, but we're not overly worried about this situation. Sproles could still perform like a RB1 in PPR leagues and is a RB2 with upside in non-PPR leagues.

SD - RB Ryan Mathews going through rehab

Source: CBSSports.com - Dan McLellan

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) caught and threw footballs Wednesday, Aug. 22, during rehabilitation work. Mathews has said his goal is to be ready for Week 1, but it is considered a long shot that he'd be able to return that quickly after just breaking his clavicle 13 days ago.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathews is not a doctor and it's unlikely he'll be ready by week 1 of the regular season. He could miss as much as the first four games of the year.

SEA - Russell Wilson needs good showing

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson will need to be significantly better than QB Matt Flynn to have a chance to win the starting job in his team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 24.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wilson has been outplaying Flynn this preseason, but he's done so against second- and third-team defenses. His strong arm and scrambling ability could win him the starting job for week one. Wilson is known as a hard worker as well and teammates respond to his leadership.

GB - Impressed with RB Cedric Benson's work ethic

Source: The Associated Press

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said he has been impressed with RB Cedric Benson's work ethic and commitment since joining the team. 'He's been motivated,' McCarthy said. 'He's taken my seat in the meeting room. He sits next to Aaron. I've been bumped back a row. I think that's a good thing. He's really into trying to learn this offense because I know I've said it a couple times already, he's trying to learn a different language. He's an accomplished football player. I'm glad he's here. He seems very motivated. And I know he's looking forward to playing Thursday.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Benson's fit on the Packers. He's not going to catch many passes there, but his straight forward, determined running style should work well in their spread system. Benson could perform like a low end RB2 or flex option for your fantasy team.

SEA - WR Sidney Rice practicing at full speed

Source: The Seattle Times - Danny O'Neil

Seattle Seahawks WR Sidney Rice (shoulders) was knocked on his rear during a passing drill in practice Tuesday, Aug. 21, by FS Earl Little. 'It was great,' head coach Pete Carroll said. 'He needed to feel that and know that could happen.' Rice got up right away following the hit from Little, who eased up before colliding with him. Rice is coming back from surgery on both of his shoulders; he has been practicing at full speed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rice has incredible talent but is one of the most injury prone players in the league. If rookie Russell Wilson wins the starting QB job it's better for a downfield target like Rice. Matt Flynn is not known as a deep passer, and could struggle to hit a speedy target like Rice.

SF - Colin Kaepernick wins backup QB job

Source: Twitter

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has won the backup job behind starting QB Alex Smith, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kaepernick has made some plays this preseason and is being groomed as the QB of the future. It remains to be seen if the 49ers will keep three QBs on the roster. Scott Tolzien and Josh Johnson are competing for that spot.

DEN - Three linemen could compete for two spots

Source: The Denver Post - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos DL Malik X. Jackson, DE Jeremy Beal and DT Sealver Siliga could be competing for two spots on the final roster if the team decides to keep nine defensive linemen on the roster.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Siliga looked good at minicamp but has struggled to impress in the preseason. Beal has looked good late in preseason games, and Jackson is a rookie with the strength and long arms to be a factor against the run.

CAR - WR Steve Smith update

Source: Twitter

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith (foot) may practice Friday, Aug. 24, after his foot infection responded well to antibiotics.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This foot injury is not a huge concern and Smith should be ready for the start of the regular season.

SF - RB Brandon Jacobs has done enough to earn roster spot

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Brandon Jacobs has done enough to earn a roster spot, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jacobs is going to get some carries as a backup behind Frank Gore. Even though he's not a power back he'll get some goalline and short-yardage carries. He'll be splitting backup touches with rookie LaMichael James.

BUF - Not close to deals with two impending UFAs

Source: The Buffalo News - Mark Gaughan

The Buffalo Bills are interested in signing OG Andy Levitre and FS Jairus Byrd to contract extensions before they become free agents next offseason but are not close to a deal with either at this time. The team may try to sign one to an extension before the start of the regular season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Both are important pieces for the Bills future. We like Levitre's strength and versatility along the Offensive Line. Byrd is one of the best young Safeties in the game today and may be in line first to receive an extension.

OAK - WR Jacoby Ford in walking boot

Source: ANG Newspapers - Steve Corkran

Oakland Raiders WR Jacoby Ford (foot) walked onto the practice field Thursday, Aug. 23, with a walking boot on his left foot.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ford has great physical talent but can't stay healthy. He's not worth drafting in standard leagues, but keep him on your waiver wire speed dial if he can get healthy.

DET - Coach says more time would benefit RB Jahvid Best

Source: The Detroit News - Chris McCosky

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the team has not decided whether RB Jahvid Best (concussion) will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list but did say extra time off would benefit Best. Best has been working out by himself since has not been cleared to practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Best's football future is in question after these major concussion problems. He's too risky to draft in your fantasy league.

TB - Head coach praises WR Jordan Shipley

Source: PewterReport.com - Victoria Horchak

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano praised WR Jordan Shipley, saying he has looked good in his first two days of practice. 'He moves well. He is efficient. Natural under the ball in punt returns,' Schiano said. Schiano also said Shipley will play in the team's third preseason game, likely later in the game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shipley can be a QBs best friend because of his crisp routes and sure hands. He just needs to stay healthy as that's been a problem for him during his entire college and pro career.

PIT - QB rotation set for third preseason game

Source: Beaver County Times - Mike Bires

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will receive the most snaps during the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 25. QBs Byron Leftwich and Charlie Batch will also play in the game, but QB Jerrod Johnson will sit out the game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Week three of the preseason is essentially a dress rehearsal for the regular season. The Steelers are unlikely to keep four QBs, but Johnson could help his chances of making the practice squad with a strong performance in week four.

NE - WR Julian Edelman, Jeremy Ebert could see more time Friday

Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots WRs Julian Edelman and Jeremy Ebert would likely be bumped up the depth chart should WR Wes Welker (undisclosed) not play in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 24.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Welker may be playing his final season with the Patriots since he didn't get the long-term deal he wanted and instead had to sign his one-year Franchise Tender. Both Edelman and Ebert are candidates to replace Welker if he does move on. Dynasty owners need to keep an eye on this situation as it unfolds. Both backup WRs are nice lottery ticket picks in deep dynasty leagues.

CLE - Brandon Weeden getting comfortable with playbook

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden is confident in his knowledge of the team's playbook. However, there are still some plays he's not comfortable calling in a game, something he's communicated to coaches.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Weeden's a work in progress and he should have an up and down rookie season. We like his confidence and arm strength. There's not a throw he won't try to make, and he'll regularly attack tight coverage. However, he'll throw plenty of picks because of that attitude. Weeden also struggles to move in (or out) the pocket and is essentially a standing target.

SD - QB Philip Rivers to play Friday

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers will play in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 24, despite the team missing three starters from the offensive line. 'This is a group we could be playing opening day with,' head coach Norv Turner said. 'We're going to prepare. They are guys who certainly will be dressed on opening day the way we're at now. I've got a lot of confidence in the guys we're going to line up on the offensive line.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rivers and the Chargers have struggled this preseason. He needs to stay healthy in this regular season dress rehearsal, and could be running for his life behind that patchwork O-line.

DET - Looking for more from Nick Fairley

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions DT Nick Fairley has been having a quiet preseason with just three tackles through two preseason games. The team is looking for more overall from Fairley. 'The biggest problem for him, he's going to have to grow up fast and be consistent,' defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said. 'In that position, you can't have a part-time guy, and I'm talking about through the game, because if the offensive line smells blood, they're going to go get him.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fairley needs to stay healthy and become more of an impact player. He's playing as the team's third DT behind starters Ndamukong Suh and Corey Williams. Fairley is facing a potential suspension from the league after two offseason arrests earlier this year.
