DAL - TE Jason Witten does not need surgery

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (spleen) will not need surgery for a lacerated spleen. He is questionable for the team's Week 1 game against the New York Giants.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could make Witten a value in the 8th round or later, although he might need to be on your bench for the first game or two with his layoff following the injury.

CLE - Trent Richardson could return next week

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns general manager Mike Holmgren reports that RB Trent Richardson (knee) could be back on the practice field doing something next week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could get him back in time for the season opener against the Eagles, but it will still be hard to trust him in your week 1 lineup.

DET - Mikel Leshoure expected to play in preseason game

Source: MLive.com - Anwar Richardson

Detroit Lions RB Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) participated in his third straight practice Wednesday, Aug. 22, and is expected to play in the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 25.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We would love to see Leshoure look anything like he did back at Illinois. He has been forgotten in the rush to get Kevin Smith. Smith is now going in the 6th-7th round, while Leshoure is going after the 10th. That could change if he looks good this weekend.

JAX - RB Maurice Jones-Drew open to making amends

Source: NFL.com - Steve Wyche

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew is open to a trade; however, he is also open to bridging what is becoming a more fractured relationship with the team. The issue remains who will extend the olive branch in order to repair the relationship as Jones-Drew is not happy owner Shahid Khan discussed his situation in public.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could be the signal of movement that everyone has been waiting for in the Jones-Drew holdout. He is still likely to yield touches to Rashad Jennings, so Jones-Drew is a risky first-round pick even after he reports to the team.

There had been talk from Jones-Drew about being open to a trade. There's no reason for the Jaguars to trade Jones-Drew unless a team is willing to give a first-round pick and more, and that team will have to be willing to give Jones-Drew at least 15-20 million dollars guaranteed on a new deal. There will be no Maurice Jones-Drew trade.

PIT - Isaac Redman injury update

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Alan Robinson

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman (hip) said an MRI revealed he had a hip injury, not a groin injury. He is practicing again and, barring a setback, could start in Week 1. 'I'm trying to do what I can do without triggering it, without making it worse,' Redman said. 'Hopefully, I can just keep getting better and better and not have a setback. We're just trying not to push it too hard.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the first positive news we've seen on Redman in a bit, but it still sounds like he will be a dicey start in week one. He might have 3-4 weeks of lead back work, but the Steelers seem eager to get Rashard Mendenhall involved before mid-October.

CAR - WR Steve Smith has foot issue

Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith (foot) is seeing a doctor for a foot infection he is dealing with. The issue has kept him out of practice all week, but it is not believed to be serious. Smith was seen walking on crutches Wednesday, Aug. 22.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The news of this mystery injury circulated this morning, but it sounds like it is not a reason to move him down your board. The appearance of crutches is still ominous, so we'll be monitoring this for you. Smith is still a solid pick in the fourth round of a 12 team league.

NO - RB Darren Sproles may not play until Week 1

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune - Larry Holder

New Orleans Saints interim head coach Joe Vitt said he would be fine with RB Darren Sproles (knee) sitting out the final two preseason games so he can get ready for the start of the regular season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sproles was looking like a value in the second round of PPR leagues, now we have to possibly let him fall to the third round before pulling the trigger. Vitt has insisted that Sproles could play if it was the regular season, but to not let him play in the preseason at all is a bit worrisome.

NYG - WR Hakeem Nicks looks good during practice

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Ohm Youngmisuk

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said he had WR Hakeem Nicks (foot) go through practice harder Wednesday, Aug. 22, and that Nicks looked good during practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nicks is creeping back into top 10s on fantasy wide receiver draft boards. He is a solid pick in the mid-to-late third round, a value in the fourth.

PHI - Nick Foles to start Friday

Source: CSNPhilly.com - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles will start in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 24, and may play up to a half. QB Trent Edwards will be the No. 2 quarterback in the game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mike Kafka's injury has put Foles's career on a faster track. If he performs well in the "dress rehearsal" preseason game, Foles could hold the backup job at some point this season, and even give the Eagles pause about paying Vick's exorbitant price tag in 2013 if he can't stay healthy this year.

OAK - Will not 'baby' RB Darren McFadden

Source: NFL.com

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said RB Darren McFadden is healthy entering the season and in no way will the team 'baby' him in order to ensure the running back stays injury-free. McFadden has missed 19 of a possible 64 games during his four-year pro career, missing at least three games in each season. The bulk of those games lost to injury came due to a Lisfranc foot injury during the second half of last season. 'He's 100 percent,' Allen said of McFadden. 'I think the thing that you look at is as a running back, I mean, it's a tough position. They take some shots and that's part of football. We can't baby him. We can't protect him. We got to go out there and play football and give him an opportunity to carry the ball, and we hope that he's able to stay healthy.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no reason to do that, as McFadden's injury problems have not been a result of overuse. All of the Raiders confident rhetoric about McFadden's durability has to be comforting if you are thinking of taking him in the first round.

WAS - Injury updates

Source: ESPN980 - Chris Russell

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said RB Roy Helu (Achilles') did not do much in practice Wednesday, Aug. 22. 'He didn't do too much today. A little bit, but not a lot,' Shanahan said. RB Tim Hightower (knee) practiced with the scout team and did more.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Helu will be brought along slowly by a staff that doesn't trust his durability, but today still represents a move in the right direction. If he and Hightower are at or near the same point physically, Helu is easily the superior option.

ATL - RB Michael Turner struggling in preseason

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - Chris Vivlamore

Atlanta Falcons RB Michael Turner has just 14 yards on eight carries in the preseason so far; however, Turner insists there is no reason to panic as it is just a matter of getting his work in. 'It's just a matter of getting reps,' Turner said. 'It's just a glorified practice. You just want to get out there, get the looks and make the corrections from the game tape like you do for any other practice. You still want to look sharp and crisp out there and hopefully we'll clean all that up this week.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

By some reports, Turner has lost a step that he didn't have to lose. While he could be waiting to turn it on until the regular season, Turner was already fading last year. Jacquizz Rodgers is a multi-faceted talent who fits better in the Falcons new pass-centric offense, and he is the much better value pick in PPR leagues at least five rounds after Turner is going off of the board.

KC - WR Dwayne Bowe to play Friday

Source: KCChiefs.com - Josh Looney

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe will play in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 24.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We haven't moved Bowe in our rankings one bit because of his holdout. He is Matt Cassel's clear number one receiver, and he was a top 10 fantasy wideout before Cassel went down last year. Consider yourself lucky if you can get him in the fifth round.

IND - Head coach has praise for Vick Ballard

Source: FOXSports.com - Adam Caplan

Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano praised RB Vick Ballard Wednesday, Aug. 22. 'I think he's ahead of the learning curve,' Pagano said. 'He's doing a great job in the run game and the pass game. The protection stuff is coming around on first down. He's a dynamic runner; he's got make-miss ability. He's strong. He gets extra yards. I don't think you ever see him go backwards. Even after first contact, he's going to make people miss, and he's going to have a lot of yards after contact.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Donald Brown is the first string back in Indianapolis, but he is really the lead back in a committee. Ballard might be the best all-around back in that committee. He is a name to keep on your early season waiver wire speed dial list.

SEA - WR Sidney Rice to play in preseason game

Source: Everett Herald - John Boyle

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said WR Sidney Rice (shoulder) will play in the third preseason game Friday, Aug. 24.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rice has been one of the least durable wide receivers over the last few years, with major hip, shoulder, and concussion concerns. Still, with the potential of playmaking rookie Russell Wilson starting at quarterback, Rice is looking like a value in the 10th round or later on upside alone.

ATL - RB Michael Turner working on passing game

Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Daniel Cox

Atlanta Falcons RB Michael Turner has been focusing more on catching passes out of the backfield in the preseason. 'I'm comfortable with it,' Turner said. 'I've caught more passes than I have before last year. I'm just trying to get in the groove of things and getting accustomed to this offense.' Head coach Mike Smith feels good about Turner's ability to catch passes out of the backfield.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Turner isn't going to magically become a good pass-catcher this late in his career. This is another sign that the Falcons offense is changing under new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, and it's not changing in a way that will showcase Turner's skills.

NYJ - Searching for a RT

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum's search for a starting right tackle has intensified. The team has not been happy with the play of OT Wayne Hunter, who has struggled.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets should have been "intense" about this in March when free agency opened, and during the draft in April. Right tackle is just one of many achilles heels in the Jets offense.

OAK - WR Darrius Heyward-Bey returns to practice

Source: ANG Newspapers - Jerry McDonald

Oakland Raiders WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (shoulder) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 21.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At least one Raiders starting wide receiver is healthy. If Heyward-Bey is the focus of the defense's attention, he might be due for a drop in numbers. The Raiders wide receiver corps is very difficult to figure out this year.

OAK - QB Carson Palmer struggling in preseason

Source: ANG Newspapers - Jerry McDonald

Oakland Raiders QB Carson Palmer is just 16-for-30 passing with no touchdowns and two interceptions in two preseason games. However, Palmer said he is not concerned with the stats as he is using the preseason to work on certain plays. 'That's what (preseason) is for, really, unless you're a young guy that hasn't played and just wants to get acclimated to the speed of the game,' Palmer said. 'I've been around long enougn and that's not something I'm trying to do. There are things we'll work on and plays we'll put in we normally wouldn't put in, or if we want to see if this guy can run by that guy. There are a ton of situations that come up where you do things you wouldn't do in a regular season game.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders have been without Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford for most of the preseason, and neither has proven that they can stay healthy for any extended length of time. Palmer was looking like a solid QB2 to target in the late rounds, but he is probably one to pass on at this point.

CHI - ILB Brian Urlacher sought treatment in Europe

Source: Chicago Tribune

Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher (knee) reportedly sought treatment for his knee in Europe during the spring in hopes of avoiding surgery. However, the Bears won't comment on the issue because it concerns the private business of a player seeking a medical opinion on his own.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This treatment helped Kobe Bryant among others, so it shouldn't be seen a big negative for Urlacher's prospects this year. He is still only an LB3 in IDP leagues at best because of his mounting knee problems.

DAL - Morris Claiborne looks healthy

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne appears to be over the knee injury that slowed him down earlier in training camp, and the wrist injury he previously suffered has not been an issue, either. Claiborne acknowledged he has plenty of room for improvement before the start of the season. 'My camp experience wasn't like I planned it to be because of setbacks with the injuries but I made the most of it,' Claiborne said. 'I believe I made plays when I needed to make plays, but wasn't great by any stretch of the imagination. There's a lot more I've got to do to be better and I'm willing to take the time to make that happen.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Claiborne's slow start is actually a good thing for his prospects in IDP leagues. He'll get picked on a ton by opposing quarterbacks, which should pump up his tackle numbers, if not his interception and pass defended numbers, too.

That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for sharing your season with us. We'll see you tomorrow with the update.
