SD - RB Ryan Mathews targets Week 1 return

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) said Sunday, Aug. 12, that he thinks he can be on the field for the Sept. 10 regular season opener against the Oakland Raiders. 'I think I heal pretty fast,' Mathews said. 'I think that'll give me time to play against the Raiders. I'm happy it happened now than against the Raiders.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's nice for Mathews to have this sentiment, but the reality is that type of injury at that position could lead to him missing more time than he wants. If his body can stand up to it Mathews is in for a big workload when he returns to the field. His ADP has fallen to the RB2 ranks now due to this injury.

TEN - Jake Locker to start preseason game

Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said QB Jake Locker will start in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 17. Locker said the starting offense is expected to be in for around 20 plays.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A great sign for Locker's chances of starting the regular season opener. Matt Hasselbeck has struggled during camp and the preseason, while Locker has looked good. He's the future of the team and the job will be his eventually even if Hasselbeck wins the job at the beginning of the year.

NYG - WR Hakeem Nicks activated off PUP list

Source: The Star-Ledger - Mike Garafolo

Updating a previous report, New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (foot) has been activated off the Physically Unable to Perform List Monday, Aug. 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A good sign for Nicks recovery here. He may be able to suit up during the dress rehearsal for the regular season, aka week three of the preseason. Nicks should be a full go for the start of the year barring any setbacks.

CIN - RB Bernard Scott's hand injury not considered serious

Source: Cecil Lammey - ESPN Denver, Footballguys.com

Cecil Lammey, NFL Insider for 102.3 ESPN Denver and senior writer for Footballguys.com, reports a Bengals source says that Bernard Scott's hand injury is not believed to be serious. Scott's being held out of practice again today and is probably not going to play against the Falcons this week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lammey also tweeted the Bengals have no timetable for his return, so Scott may not miss the entire preseason. He's missing out on valuable time and reps in training camp, especially since Benjarvus Green-Ellis is missing practice with a foot injury. If healthy Scott will be the team's big play change of pace RB behind Green-Ellis.

GB - WR Greg Jennings going through concussion protocol

Source: Green Bay Press-Gazette - Mike Vandermause

Green Bay Packers WR Greg Jennings (concussion) is still going through the concussion protocol, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jennings is a big piece of their passing game and they won't rush him back from this injury. There's no need to worry about him missing time in the regular season at this time.

SD - To use RB committee

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner indicated Sunday, Aug. 12, that the team will use a running back by committee approach until RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) is healthy enough to return. 'Right now, it'd probably be a mix' between RBs Ronnie Brown, Le'Ron McClain and Curtis Brinkley.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're hearing that Brinkley may be the guy to emerge in this RBBC. The coaching staff loves him and he plays with a nice blend of balance and elusiveness. Brown is more versatile but not the same player he used to be when he came out of Auburn years ago.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson takes first-team reps

Source: 1500ESPN.com - Tom Pelissero

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (knee) took all the first-team reps in practice Sunday, Aug. 12, in his first day back from the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) list. RB Toby Gerhart was working with the second team.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson wouldn't have it any other way. We're certain the team is monitoring him closely, but Peterson is a beast and he wants to get back to where he was pre-injury. Without setbacks he should be ready for the start of the regular season, but may see a reduced workload in the first month.

WAS - Roy Helu injury update

Source: The Washington Times - Rich Campbell

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu (Achilles') missed practice Monday, Aug. 13, with Achilles' tendonitis, according to head coach Mike Shanahan.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Helu has talent but questions abound about his durability. The Redskins starting RB job could go to Evan Royster at the start of the regular season. However, with Mike Shanahan the job may change hands multiple times during the year.

PHI - QB Michael Vick looks good in practice

Source: CSNPhilly.com - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick was sharp in practice Monday, Aug. 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Vick just has to stay healthy this year. If he does we wouldn't be surprised to see him finish as a top 5 fantasy QB. Because of his injury history you need to draft a solid backup QB like Andrew Luck if you add Vick to your roster.

GB - RB Cedric Benson still has a lot left in the tank

Source: Green Bay Press-Gazette - Mike Vandermause

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson says he still has a lot left in the tank. 'I definitely got another 900 plus (carries). I feel great. I do a good job of putting a lot of effort in, taking care of myself off the field, and I think it contributes on the field. It's kind of what you've got to do. You grow older, play the running back position, you understand the longevity of this position, of any position in the NFL, you got to do all you can to stay healthy.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We think Benson is a better fit than James Starks on run downs. He's determined and keeps his legs driving after contact. Benson is not a receiving threat and thus will only be a two-down back. We're not expecting a huge season from Benson even if he does win the starting job as the Packers don't lean on the ground game that much. Pick him up as a RB3/flex option for your fantasy team in the 8th round.

MIA - WR Davone Bess has strong practice

Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins WR Davone Bess had a strong practice Monday, Aug. 13, catching two red zone touchdowns. Bess has been running much crisper routes in training camp this year.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bess is now the team's best WR on the roster and the team will need him to elevate his game this year. For fantasy purposes (in re-draft leagues) we're not crazy about the Dolphins or any other receiver on the squad. Draft Bess as a WR4/5 you can grab in the final rounds of your draft.

MIA - Ryan Tannehill gets first-team reps

Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill got snaps with the first-team offense Monday, Aug. 13, and may be closing the gap in the quarterback competition with veteran Matt Moore.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We wouldn't be surprised if Tannehill wins the starting job outright for week one of the regular season. He's the future of the team anyway and eventually the job will be his. If he impresses in training camp and the preseason the team might as well start him over Moore and the injured David Garrard.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning looks sharp

Source: The Denver Post - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning looked sharp in practice Monday, Aug. 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manning's passes were more crisp than they were Thursday night against the Bears. He even connected with Eric Decker on a 60-yard laser pass down the sidelines. Any concerns about his arm strength are seriously overblown. Sure, he's not 100% but he can still make all the throws required in the NFL.

NO - RB Darren Sproles to miss preseason game

Source: WWLTV.com

New Orleans Saints interim head coach Joe Vitt said Darren Sproles (knee) will not play in the third preseason game because of a knee injury. Vitt said Sproles would have been able to play if it was a regular season game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sproles is a seasoned pro and there isn't any need to rush him back. We should see him get a few more reps later in the preseason.

NYJ - Still no QB controversy

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Monday, Aug. 13, that QB Mark Sanchez remains the team's starting quarterback over QB Tim Tebow, despite the willingness of the public to create a quarterback controversy.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ryan can continue to deny it, but the QB controversy talk won't rest unless Sanchez looks sharp when he's on the field. The early season sketch for the Jets is brutal, and if Sanchez struggles we could see Tebow take over as the starter. It could be a long, long year for the Jets in 2012.

NE - Not expected to sign WR Plaxico Burress

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The New England Patriots are not expected to sign free-agent WR Plaxico Burress (Jets).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots may now have Burress on their emergency list in case injuries hit their WR corps later in the preseason. We didn't see Burress as being anything more than a red zone threat with the Patriots.

DAL - QB Stephen McGee struggling during camp

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George

Dallas Cowboys QB Stephen McGee has struggled during practice at training camp. He is competing with QB Rudy Carpenter for the No. 3 quarterback job if the team decides to keep three quarterbacks on their final roster.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team has been patient with McGee but he hasn't developed over the last few years. He's certainly on the roster bubble, and the team may decide to keep only two QBs on the roster - Tony Romo and Kyle Orton.

DAL - WR Kevin Ogletree still has slight lead for No. 3 WR spot

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George

Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach Jimmy Robinson said WR Kevin Ogletree still has a small edge over the other receivers for the No. 3 wide receiver job. Ogletree's edge is probably due more to his experience than his production.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cole Beasley has been working with the first-team and may be Ogletree's strongest competition. Dwayne Harris and Danny Coale are also in the mix for the WR3 job behind Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.

SF - TE Delanie Walker's injury not believed to be serious

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he does not think the knee injury TE Delanie Walker (knee) suffered during practice Sunday, Aug. 12, is serious.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team will monitor the situation and in the meantime guys like Nate Byham will get more reps in camp.

DET - WR Calvin Johnson dealing with finger injury

Source: MLive.com - Anwar Richardson

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (finger) is dealing with a finger injury but said he will be fine.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Conspiracy theorists will say it's the Madden Curse! We say it's just football. Don Mega says he's okay, and we don't see this being an issue by the time the regular season gets here. Lions coach Jim Schwartz said the injury was not serious.

NO - WR Adrian Arrington undergoes surgery

Source: WWLTV.com

New Orleans Saints WR Adrian Arrington (knee) underwent knee surgery after receiving a second opinion on the injury. Interim head coach Joe Vitt did not have a timetable on when Arrington will be able to return.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for Arrington here. He was impressing in camp and trying to win the WR4 job behind Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, and Lance Moore. Now guys like Joseph Morgan, Nick Toon, and Courtney Roby will compete for that spot.

SEA - Russell Okung having strong camp

Source: NFL.com

Seattle Seahawks OT Russell Okung (pectoral) is quietly having a solid training camp and has bounced back from a torn pectoral muscle suffered last season. 'I've really rebounded from the injury last year, and I'm really glad to be back out there,' Okung said. 'We want to be a tough, physical football team that runs the ball and explosively throws it down the field. So that's kind of what we did last year, and I hope that we keep going off of that.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Okung has always had the talent to be dominant in this league. If he stays healthy his presence on the O-Line will greatly help both the run game and the passing game.

ATL - GM says QB Matt Ryan a top-10 QB

Source: NFL.com

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said there is no question QB Matt Ryan is a top-10 quarterback in the NFL, and he will only continue to get better. 'In my mind there is no question he is a top-10 quarterback in this league,' Dimitroff said. “This is a team game. We all know that Matt's his harshest critic and he's always working on getting better. There is no one out there that works as hard as him or harder than he does and I know the expectations are high in this building, they are high outside, they are high from the owner as well as myself and Mike Smith and he is the kind of guy that is going to take that head on.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dimitroff is right on the money here. Ryan could really flourish under the new system run by Offensive Coordinator Dirk Koetter.

CIN - RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis will be inactive Thursday

Source: Bengals.com

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (foot) will miss the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 16, against the Atlanta Falcons.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Green-Ellis will be back for the dress rehearsal to the regular season, aka week three of the preseason. In the meantime we'll see more from guys like Bernard Scott, Boom Herron, and Cedric Peerman.

JAX - Coach explains WR Lee Evans move

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Vito Stellino

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey said Sunday, Aug. 12, that WR Lee Evans was released because he is no longer the same player as earlier in his career. He said Evans wasn't able to run routes the way he did in his prime. 'He's just struggling getting in and out of breaks and I think he felt the same way,' Mularkey said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Evans is going to have a difficult time catching on with another team if the WR poor Jaguars let him go. He's not the same player he used to be and this may be the end of his pro career.

PHI - CB Nnamdi Asomugha does not have concussion

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles CB Nnamdi Asomugha (lip, neck) did not have any concussion symptoms after his collision during practice Monday, Aug. 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news here after a scary moment in practice.

IND - ILB Pat Angerer expected to miss six weeks

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Phillip B. Wilson

Indianapolis Colts LB Pat Angerer (foot) is expected to miss six weeks because of a fractured foot. He will undergo surgery to repair the fracture.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Angerer was a tackling machine last season, ranking fourth in the NFL with 148 tackles. This is a big blow for a defense in dire need of help against the run. They ranked 29th versus the run last year and Angerer was going to play a big role in Chuck Pagano's 3-4 defensive scheme. They may explore the free agent market for help while Angerer is out. In the meantime guys like Moise Fokou and Greg Lloyd Jr. will compete for Angerer's spot.
