MIA - WR Chad Johnson released

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating a previous report, the Miami Dolphins released WR Chad Johnson Sunday, Aug. 12. The release comes on the heels of an arrest for an alleged domestic violence incident over the weekend.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We wondered how coach Joe Philbin would respond to this. If you saw the first episode of HBO's Hard Knocks, you saw the painful discussion where Philbin sheepishly tried to talk to Johnson about not using as much profanity in Johnson's press conference. It's not surprising that Philbin would rather cut bait here than try to deal with a strong personality like Johnson. And of course, the bottom line reality for Johnson is the same as it is for every player - the player simply wasn't good enough on the field to outweigh the negatives.

IND - Andrew Luck has strong debut

Source: The Associated Press

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck went 10-for-16 with 188 yards and two touchdowns against the St. Louis Rams in the Colts' first preseason game Sunday, Aug. 12.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Careful here. If we go by one game, Andrew Luck is the best QB in the league and Cam Newton is one of the worst. Relax. Let Jim Irsay go wild while you stay rational. Although it's much preferable to have a strong outing like this. His first pass was a 5 yard dump pass that turned into a 63-yard TD for RB Donald Brown. Brown did 95% of this one. Luck did show great poise, scrambling ability, and decision making in his debut. He did a nice job spreading the ball around and seemed to favor Austin Collie in this contest. We like him as a QBBC or QB2 prospect for your fantasy team this year.

HOU - WR Andre Johnson expected to play in second preseason game

Source: Houston Chronicle - Tania Ganguli

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said WR Andre Johnson (groin) is expected to play in the second preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He did not play in the first preseason game because he was behind in his practice reps.

GB - RB Cedric Benson signed

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The Green Bay Packers have signed free-agent RB Cedric Benson (Bengals) to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With James Starks dealing with a turf toe injury (and struggling in the preseason) the Packers felt they needed to make a move here. Benson could be a better fit for the offense as he's more determined than Starks between the tackles. He's not a receiver out of the backfield but can make an immediate contribution as a two-down back. We like him as a RB3/flex option and expect his ADP to rise somewhere around the 9th round.

MIA - Ryan Tannehill could start second preseason game

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

The Miami Dolphins would like to get QB Ryan Tannehill some reps with the first-team offense during the second preseason game Friday, Aug. 17, and there is a chance he could start the game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tannehill is not out of the running to win the team's starting job for the regular season. David Garrard is missing time with a knee injury but should be back sometime later this preseason. Matt Moore is not a good practice player and did not look overly impressive in the Dolphins first preseason game.

TEN - Jake Locker closing gap in QB competition

Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said QB Jake Locker is closing the gap in the starting quarterback competition with QB Matt Hasselbeck. Munchak indicated Locker could start the second preseason game Friday, Aug. 17.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Locker looked much better than Hasselbeck in the preseason game against Seattle. The job is his eventually and Tennessee's coaching staff may just decide to hand over the reins to Locker in week one.

NE - WR Plaxico Burress working out

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The New England Patriots are scheduled to work out free-agent WR Plaxico Burress (Jets) Sunday, Aug. 12.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Interesting workout for the Patriots here. They're already stacked at the WR position and Burress doesn't seem like a natural fit for that offense. If signed he would compete with guys like Donte Stallworth for a roster spot. Burress isn't the same player he used to be, but could be used mostly as a red zone target.

MIN - Hope RB Adrian Peterson can practice fully by Tuesday

Source: ESPN.com - Josina Anderson

Updating a previous report, the Minnesota Vikings hope RB Adrian Peterson (knee) can participate in a limited basis in the walkthrough Sunday, Aug. 12, and participate fully in practice by Tuesday, Aug. 14.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson is champing at the bit and ready to get back into action. The team insists he will be a full participant but we can't imagine them overusing Peterson during camp and the preseason.

GB - RB James Starks dealing with toe injury

Source: Twitter

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said RB James Starks (toe) is considered week-to-week with turf toe.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Turf toe injuries are known to linger, and it's one of the reasons why the Packers may sign Cedric Benson. Backup Alex Green is also trying to come back from the knee injury that cost him all of his rookie season last year.

CIN - RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis out for a week

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (foot) will be sidelined for a week because of a sore foot.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Lawfirm will be back for the team's third preseason game, which is treated like an in-season game and a dress rehearsal for the start of the regular season. In the meantime we'll see more from guys like Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard, and Cedric Peerman.

NYJ - Tim Tebow could get more playing time this season

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan did not rule out the possibility giving QB Tim Tebow more playing time this season if the offensive line continues to struggle with pass protection. The team gave up five sacks in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 10, but Tebow was able to get out of two pressure situations during the game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tebow is a great runner but struggles mightily as a passer. The Jets could use more zone/option plays in order to give Tebow room to run.

SF - TE Delanie Walker injured Sunday

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers TE Delanie Walker (knee) suffered an apparent knee injury during practice Sunday, Aug. 12. He was walking gingerly after the injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No word on the severity here. If Walker misses any time it will lead to greater opportunity for a guy like Nate Byham.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant expected to be game-time decision

Source: ESPNDallas.com - Tim MacMahon

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (hamstring) participated in the team's walkthrough Sunday, Aug. 12, and is expected to be a game-time decision for the preseason game Monday, Aug. 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If the team decides he can play we won't see him on the field more than a series or two. Bryant has incredible upside but time is running out for him to prove himself as a pro.

NYJ - TE Dustin Keller thinks he is going to Pro Bowl

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets TE Dustin Keller said he expects to be a big part of the offense this season and to make the Pro Bowl.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a nice sentiment to have but Keller must realize both Jets QBs struggle with consistency throwing the football.

JAX - WR Lee Evans waived

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Vito Stellino

The Jacksonville Jaguars have waived WR Lee Evans.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Evans may have trouble latching on with another team if the WR poor Jaguars is giving up on him.

NYJ - Jeremy Kerley has slight tear in hamstring

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets WR Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) said he has a slight tear in his hamstring but hopes to participate in team drills by the end of the week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kerley has barely practiced in training camp, and needs to show what he can do if he wants to be the team's slot receiver. He's quick in and out of his breaks, but this hamstring injury could linger and prevent him from playing up to his potential.

SEA - TE Zach Miller suffers concussion

Source: The Seattle Times - Danny O'Neil

Seattle Seahawks TE Zach Miller (concussion) suffered a concussion during the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 11.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller has missed games due to concussions in the past, and this is a situation to monitor closely. Kellen Winslow would work as the TE1 for Seattle while Miller is out.

ARI - Beanie Wells to practice this week

Source: AZCardinals.com - Josh Weinfuss

Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells (knee) will receive practice reps this week and his status for the preseason game Friday, Aug. 17, will be determined by head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt said he would like to see Wells get some touches in the upcoming preseason game but expects Wells to get more playing time in the fourth preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wells is trying to get ready for the start of the regular season and the team will monitor his health closely. Ryan Williams would be more than capable as a starter if Wells misses time with this injury.

CIN - DE Carlos Dunlap out four weeks

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said DE Carlos Dunlap (knee) will be sidelined for four weeks because of a knee injury he suffered during the preseason game Friday, Aug. 10.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dunlap didn't tear his ACL but is unlikely to be ready for the start of the regular season. This is bad news for the Bengals as they need to rely heavily on their pass rush to create havoc for opponents.
