Hi Folks,

Welcome to Sunday. Hope you're having a great weekend. Big one for me as I'm heading home from Bristol, Tennessee where I was able to catch one of my favorite bands, Mumford and Sons on their Gentlemen Of The Road Tour. Fun show. And then today I get to pick up my oldest son who's been away at camp for a month this summer working on the dish washing crew at Windy Gap Camp near Asheville, NC. Plus I've got a DVR full of Week 1 Preseason games to get through. It's a great time of the year.

We've got important new content for you with the Top 300 and Draft Lists, new episodes of Footballguys TV, plus the news and notes so let's get to it.

MIA - WR Chad Johnson arrested

Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel - Izzy Gould

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Johnson was arrested Saturday, Aug. 11, and charged with domestic violence.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As outrageous as Johnson has been during his NFL career, he could always point to the fact he's avoided real trouble and hasn't been arrested as a pro. Not any longer.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart signs five-year extension

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart signed a five-year contract extension worth $36.5 million, including $22.5 million guaranteed. 'We are thrilled to be able to extend Jonathan for five additional years. He is a perfect fit for our organization. He is a playmaker who can make the difference in games, and we have seen the impact he and DeAngelo Williams have had on our team,' general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement released by the Panthers.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Some folks worry that once a player is paid, he lets off the gas. I don't fully buy into that but I also don't completely ignore it.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson might return Sunday

Source: 1500ESPN.com - Tom Pelissero

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (knee) might come off the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) list as soon as Sunday, Aug. 12. 'We're going to discuss it,' head coach Leslie Frazier said. 'We'll discuss where he is and what's the next step for him this week, whether we continue to work through rehab or how we want to approach it.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson is chomping at the bit and is ready to go. We feel the team will ease him back into the lineup. No need to rush the superstar back into the lineup.

MIA - Ryan Tannehill closing the gap

Source: CBSSports.com

Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said Friday, Aug. 10, he has not yet committed to moving QB Ryan Tannehill up to No. 2 on the depth chart; however, Philbin did acknowledge the gap between Tannehill and QB Matt Moore is closing. 'I don't think it's huge,' Philbin said. 'I think it's relatively close.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With the injury to David Garrard it has opened up an opportunity for Tannehill to show what he can do. Tannehill knows the Mike Sherman system like the back of his hand because Sherman was his college coach at Texas A&M.

PHI - QB Michael Vick to practice Saturday

Source: NFL.com

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick (thumb) will take part in practice Saturday, Aug. 11.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Vick's latest injury was minor, but still provided a major scare for fantasy owners. If healthy he could finish the season as a top 5 fantasy QB. However, if you select Vick as your QB1 make sure to have a strong backup QB option like Carson Palmer or Andrew Luck.

TB - No end to RB battle

Source: CBSSports.com

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' running back competition expects to continue as both RBs Doug Martin and LeGarrette Blount impressed in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 10. Blount was quick and decisive on the way to 30 yards on seven carries. Martin added another 21 yards on seven carries. Each scored a touchdown in the contest.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A starter for the regular season won't be named until later, but we still think Martin wins the job. Martin is a three down back who can be an effective runner and receiver out of the backfield.

ARI - QB battle has no frontrunner

Source: NFL.com

Arizona Cardinals QBs Kevin Kolb and John Skelton have failed to impress during the team's first two preseason games as the team's quarterback competition remains very much up for debate.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kolb has the big contract, but Skelton has the big arm. Neither have looked that impressive during the preseason and we're not expecting a decision until the last week of the preseason. No matter who is the starter we don't like either player as anything more than a poor fantasy backup.

SD - Early return for RB Ryan Mathews would be highly irregular

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

A team orthopedic surgeon said Friday, Aug. 10, that an early return for San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) would be highly irregular. A four-week return would put Mathews in position to potentially play in the Sept. 10 Week 1 opener against the Oakland Raiders. 'Frankly, I don't think most people would release him before six weeks,' the surgeon said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathews could miss the first few weeks of the regular season as he heals from this clavicle injury. He'll have a big role for the team once healthy and should perform like a RB1. In the meantime the Chargers will lean on guys like Ronnie Brown and Le'Ron McClain to do more in the ground game.

DEN - Ronnie Hillman back at practice

Source: The Denver Post - Lindsay Jones

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman (hamstring) is working in full-team practice sessions Saturday, Aug. 11, for the first time since returning from a hamstring injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hillman was padded up last Tuesday and Wednesday but didn't participate in team drills. He's got huge upside and should be the primary backup behind Willis McGahee to start the regular season. There's a chance Hillman could get more touches as the season goes on.

PHI - QB Mike Kafka injured

Source: NFL.com

Philadelphia Eagles QB Mike Kafka (hand) fractured his left (non-throwing) hand in the team's preseason opener and will be limited for the next three weeks. Kafka will be able to participate in practice drills where he does not have to take snaps from center. QB Nick Foles will work with the No. 2 offense in 'live' practice periods.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a big opportunity for Foles here. With Kafka out Foles will be able to show what he can do in practice and in the preseason. Foles has a strong arm but needs to work on his accuracy and decision making.

NO - TE Daniel Graham signed

Source: Twitter

The New Orleans Saints signed free-agent TE Daniel Graham (Titans) Saturday, Aug. 11. The team waived CB Nate Bussey in the corresponding move.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Graham is not the same player he used to be, but can still be a valuable blocker and red zone target if need be.

DET - Kellen Moore struggles in first pro game

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions QB Kellen Moore struggled in his first professional appearance in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 10, against the Cleveland Browns. He misfired on 10 of his 14 pass attempts, posting just 40 yards and a quarterback rating of just 9.8. Moore and QB R.J. Archer are battling for the No. 3 job behind starter QB Matthew Stafford and No. 2 QB Shaun Hill.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not a surprise here. He lacks the size and arm strength to be a pro passer. He may not even find a spot on the practice squad if he doesn't perform better.

MIN - RB Toby Gerhart impresses coach

Source: 1500ESPN.com - Tom Pelissero

Minnesota Vikings RB Toby Gerhart carried five times for 31 yards in the preseason opener Friday, Aug. 10, against the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Leslie Frazier commented that he was impressed how 'forceful'Gerhart was. 'We've avoided contact with him in training camp,' Frazier said. 'Now we wanted to take him down and just see how forceful he ran the football and his presence.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gerhart will be the team's lead back as they ease superstar Adrian Peterson back into the lineup. We could see an expanded role for Gerhart during the first month of the regular season.

IND - Finding WR Austin Collie useful outside

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Phillip B. Wilson

The Indianapolis Colts have been using WR Austin Collie on the outside, rather than his customary slot spot, during training camp. The new coaching staff led by head coach Chuck Pagano sees Collie as more of an asset outside, even in three wide receiver sets.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Using Collie on the outside should limit the number of blindside hits he'll take. He's very talented but concussion problems have plagued him in recent years.

PHI - Impressed with Bryce Brown

Source: KFFL.com

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said Saturday, Aug. 11, he came away impressed with RB Bryce Brown after the team's preseason opener. 'Bryce is a really smart kid. Heís picking things up well and then heís a big, physical kid,' Reid said. 'Heís got good speed and good moves so you got to see that. Itís important, though, that he continues to fine-tune himself as we go here. Like any young player needs to do, he needs to continue to do that. But I would tell you he was one of the positives coming out of the game. I thought he did a nice job.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown came out of high school as one of the most highly recruited backs in the nation. In 2009 at Tennessee he flashed good speed, agility, and hands as a receiver out of the backfield. He transferred to Kansas State and was thoroughly unimpressive for the Wildcats last year. Brown has the natural talent, and if he can develop a better work ethic then the Eagles may have gotten a sleeper in the seventh-round.

DET - Mikel Leshoure to practice next week

Source: ESPN.com - Kevin Seifert

Detroit Lions RB Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) is expected to return to practice next week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Leshoure is trying to come back from the Achilles' injury that cost him all of his rookie season in 2011. He's the most physically talented RB on the Lions roster, but lower leg injuries could bother him all season.

CAR - RB DeAngelo Williams seeing less carries

Source: The Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams had just 155 carries last season, but he averaged 5.4 yards per carry. Williams averaged fewer than 10 carries a game last season Ė his fewest since 2007; however, head coach Ron Rivera believes the team's multidimensional attack benefits the backfield. 'I think our guys realize that what weíre doing and the way we do it is good for them, and if itís good for them itís good for the team,' Rivera said. 'If our guys are getting anywhere between eight and 10 touches, 12 touches, and theyíre effective, itís great. And what it does, it doesnít wear them (down).'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams and Jonathan Stewart are both incredibly talented. However, in fantasy leagues Stewart is actually the most consistent. Both are flex options with big play ability, but if you're going to take a chance on a Panthers RB then go with Stewart - especially in PPR leagues.

CIN - Travelle Wharton could be lost for the season

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

The Cincinnati Bengals fear OG Travelle Wharton (knee) suffered a season-ending right knee injury in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 10.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the Bengals here. Wharton is a strong run blocker and losing him will negatively impact the ground game. Clint Boling is likely to fill in for Wharton.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning can build on debut

Source: The Associated Press

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning said he can use the team's preseason debut as a building block. 'It felt good to get out there,' Manning said. 'We can build on this.' WR Brandon Stokley said it looked like Manning hasn't lost a beat despite the long layoff. 'To me there was no difference. He still throws the ball great,' Stokley said. 'I think everybody saw ... that he has great control of the offense. I think we are just going to try to build on this and get better every week. I think it was a good first step.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manning was trying to shake off the rust against the Bears after not playing in 2011. He made some good passes, but some wobbled out of his hand. That might be a product of the wet field conditions at Soldier Field that night.

SF - WR Randy Moss quiet Friday

Source: NFL.com

San Francisco 49ers WR Randy Moss did not have a reception in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 10. Moss was not asked to do much in the game, and served mostly as a blocker in the run game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A disappointment for fans wanting see more from Moss. The team will work him in more as the preaseason goes on.

NYJ - Rex Ryan credits Tim Tebow

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan gave credit to QB Tim Tebow for his poise during the team's preseason opener Friday, Aug. 10. 'I liked the poise he showed,' Ryan said. 'Obviously, (he) made some big runs and that's what we say he can do. If you want to come after him, you better get to him. In time, he'll kill you running, and that's what he did.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Poise is fine, but that doesn't change the fact that Tebow struggled in the team's preseason debut. Both he and Mark Sanchez looked bad when asked to throw. The Jets could be in for a long season if they don't get better QB play.

NO - Expect Mark Ingram back at practice Monday

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram (knee, toe) is expected back at practice Monday, Aug. 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ingram was held out of the preseason game against the Patriots after looking good in limited duty in the Hall of Fame game against the Cardinals.
