Statement from Andy Reid Family

Source: philadelphiaeagles.com

The Reid Family released this statement Monday.

On behalf of Tammy and our family, I would like to thank everybody for their tremendous support, love, kind words and prayers during this time of great sadness. Words cannot express our sense of loss.

We loved Garrett so much. He was a wonderful son and brother. He made us laugh, he was a pleasure to be around, he always had a smile on his face, and we will miss him dearly. We will never forget him, and we will remember him with love.

Garrett's road through life was not always an easy one. He faced tremendous personal challenges with bravery and spirit. As a family, we stood by him and were inspired as he worked to overcome those challenges. Even though he lost the battle that has been ongoing for the last eight years, we will always remember him as a fighter who had a huge, loving heart.

I spoke with the team yesterday and thanked them for their thoughts and prayers. I asked them to continue with their preparations for the upcoming season until I am ready to rejoin the team.

It is in times like these that we lean on our faith, our family, our friends, and our Eagles family. We will do so in the difficult times ahead.

Thank you again for your continued support,

Andy Reid

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Continued thoughts and prayers for the Reid family. As someone who's lost a younger brother and seen my parents suffer the pain of burying a child, my heart goes out here. Godspeed for healing and peace.

CLE - Brandon Weeden named starting quarterback

Source: Medina County Gazette - Scott Petrak

Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur named QB Brandon Weeden the starting quarterback Monday Aug. 6.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. The Browns will move forward with Weeden as the starter and will have a long leash for the rookie. We'll see if they can move popular backup QB Colt McCoy before the start of the regular season.

CHI - RB Matt Forte returns to practice

Source: Chicago Bears Radio Network - Zach Zaidman

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte (thumb) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 6.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Even with the news of Michael Bush being a goalline back we still see Forte as a top 10 fantasy RB. He's a great receiver out of the backfield in addition to being a fantastic runner.

JAX - Justin Blackmon agrees to terms

Source: Jaguars.com

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon agreed to terms on a contract Monday, Aug. 6, and is expected to sign it Monday night or Tuesday morning.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The hang up was language in the contract but that has been resolved. Blackmon has missed valuable time in camp and will have some catching up to do. He could quickly become the team's WR1 because of his natural skill set and run after the catch ability. However, we only see him as a low end WR4 and don't recommend drafting him in your fantasy league.

WAS - RB Tim Hightower tops depth chart

Source: 106.7 The Fan - Grant Paulsen

Washington Redskins RB Tim Hightower (knee) is the No. 1 running back on the first depth chart released by the team Monday Aug. 6.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's what we expected. However, that could quickly change in a Mike Shanahan offense. The starting job could change multiple times during the season.

ARI - QB Kevin Kolb could return soon

Source: ESPN.com

Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said QB Kevin Kolb (chest) could return to practice this week after suffering a bruised chest in the Hall of Fame game Sunday, Aug. 5. 'He has a bruise in his chest and that makes it kind of tough to rotate, move,' Whisenhunt said. 'I think he'll probably be practicing sometime this week.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Kolb here. He's battling with John Skelton for the starting job in training camp and can't afford to miss any time.

WAS - Robert Griffin III comfortable in camp

Source: Twitter

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III's comfort level is really good. He says the Redskins' defense does a great job against the offense in practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Griffin is a strong leader and we like him as a lead QB in a QBBC for your fantasy team. He's a scrambling QB and will be running a bootleg heavy offense in 2012.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco shining in camp

Source: Twitter

Baltimore Ravens TE Ed Dickson said quarterback Joe Flacco is playing at an all-time high, and he is excited to have him as his quarterback.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Flacco but we still only see him as a backup fantasy QB. The Ravens offense will run through Ray Rice once again in 2012.

MIA - QB David Garrard sits atop first depth chart at QB

Source: CBSSports.com

Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard was listed as the No. 1 quarterback on the team's first preseason depth chart released Monday, Aug. 6.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not a surprise. Garrard has been impressive in camp, and will likely open the season as the team's starter. However, at some point this year we expect rookie Ryan Tannehill to take over.

NYJ - QB Mark Sanchez improving in the pocket

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Monday, Aug. 6, that QB Mark Sanchez has improved his pocket presence. He is doing a better job of sliding in the pocket and protecting the ball with two hands. In the past, Sanchez was notorious for holding the ball with one hand in the face of the rush, resulting in many fumbles. 'His pocket presence is the best I've ever seen,' Ryan said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanchez needs better ball security if he wants to hold onto the starting job in 2012. Having better pocket presence will help him play more calmly and could lead to fewer turnovers.

HOU - WR Andre Johnson looks good in practice

Source: ESPN.com

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson (groin) looked good in his return to practice Monday, Aug. 6, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. Johnson was on a play count, however, as he is eased back to form. 'I thought he looked good. We put a play count on him,' Kubiak said. 'It's about getting him going again ... I thought he held up well.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Texans will be cautious with Johnson as he returns from this groin injury. It's no surprise to hear that he's looking good in practice, Johnson is one of the top 3 WRs in football today.

NYJ - Should release Tim Tebow?

Source: CBSSportsNewYork.com

Former NFL QB and current analyst Boomer Esiason said the New York Jets should release QB Tim Tebow as the idea of him being a backup quarterback is a mistake. 'I'm just telling you right now, I would (cut him), and I'll tell you why I would,' Esiason said. 'It's not in any way, shape or form - I think - benefiting this team. All you have to do is watch him throw the ball. Just watch him.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a 'get off my lawn' take if we've ever heard one. Esiason has never been a Tebow fan, and that's not changing anytime soon. The Jets won't cut Tebow. He's a valuable football player who gets the attention of the defense. Yes, he struggles mightily as a passer but can make impact plays as a rusher and help win games. The most beautiful part was Tebow's reply when he was asked about Esiason's comments. Tebow smiled and said, "I've heard nothing but great things about Mr. Esiason. I know he was a great player here, and I just wish him nothing but the best in his announcing, and God bless him."

NYJ - WR Santonio Holmes doubtful for preseason opener

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Santonio Holmes (ribs) is doubtful for the team's preseason opener, according to head coach Rex Ryan, and is out indefinitely. Holmes could have some cartilage damage.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A blow to the Jets passing game for sure. They have a young and inexperienced WR corps and need a guy like Holmes to lead the way. This injury will give more playing time to guys like Chaz Schilens and Stephen Hill.

MIA - QB competition very close

Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said the team's starting quarterback competition remains very close at this point. Philbin added he has been pleased with the performances of QBs David Garrard, Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill thus far in training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At this time it seems like Garrard is the leader in the clubhouse. Moore is not known as a good practice QB and will need outstanding performances in the preseason to climb up the depth chart. Tannehill is the rookie QB of the future. He may begin the season as the backup but we think he'll see the field at some point this year.

GB - WR Greg Jennings battling concussion

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tyler Dunne

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said Sunday, Aug. 5, that WR Greg Jennings (concussion) suffered a concussion in the team's scrimmage Friday, Aug. 3.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Teams are diagnosing concussions better and are treating them very seriously. Expect them to ease Jennings back into the lineup when he's cleared to resume practice.

OAK - RB Darren McFadden wants to stay healthy

Source: SI.com - Peter King

Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden said he is desperately trying to stay healthy in 2012. McFadden has suffered injuries in all four of his pro seasons. 'It drives me crazy. I want to go out there and prove I can stay healthy a full season,' McFadden said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners want McFadden to stay healthy too! He's never played a full 16 games in his pro career but that could change this year. McFadden is one of the best RBs in the game today and will go off the board in the top 8 picks of most fantasy drafts.

SEA - Is WR Terrell Owens a good fit?

Source: NFL.com

Free-agent WR Terrell Owens (Bengals) may not be a good fit with the Seattle Seahawks because of head coach Pete Carroll's preference to work with younger players, according to former player and current analyst Eric Davis. 'Pete Carroll works better with young players,' Davis said. 'He works better in a teaching mode, he works better brining the guys up the chain. I don't think T.O. is going to listen to a lot of what he says. I don't think Pete's method is going to work with him.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Owens was not known as a trouble maker with the Bills or the Bengals. His days as a rebel might be over as he just wants a chance to play in the league again.

SF - Colin Kaepernick to be No. 2 QB Friday

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said QB Colin Kaepernick will be the second quarterback to enter the game in their first preseason game Friday, Aug. 10.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harbaugh knows what he has in veteran Josh Johnson as he was his college coach at the University of San Diego. Kaepernick looked rough last year in the preseason and needs all the looks he can get.

DEN - Brock Osweiler has strong showing in camp

Source: NFL.com - Jeff Darlington

Denver Broncos QB Brock Osweiler may find himself quickly ascending to the No. 2 quarterback position if his strong training camp continues

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Our very own Cecil Lammey has been out at practice every day and has been impressed with the rookie. Osweiler has an incredibly strong arm and Broncos QB coach Adam Gase has worked to clean up the rookie's throwing motion and footwork. Lammey thinks Osweiler can beat out Caleb Hanie for the backup job behind Peyton Manning.

NYJ - QBs struggle in practice Monday

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez went 5-for-11 passing and was sacked three times in practice Monday, Aug. 6. QB Tim Tebow was just 3-for-8 passing and was sacked six times in 19 snaps.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This should not be news. Tebow is not a good practice player and is more of a 'gamer.' Sanchez should be performing better but is still a lock to open the season as the team's starter.

NFL - RB Travis Henry reinstated

Source: Carroll County Times - Aaron Wilson

The NFL has conditionally reinstated former NFL RB Travis Henry, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We can't imagine his phone ringing off the hook, or ringing at all. Running Back is a young man's position and guys like Cedric Benson and Ryan Grant are still available as street free agents.

MIN - Greg Childs waived

Source: KFFL.com

The Minnesota Vikings announced Monday, Aug. 6, they have waived WR Greg Childs (knees).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's going to be extremely difficult for Childs to come back from two patella tendon injuries. He was already trying to come back from one patella tendon injury he suffered as a junior in college in 2010.

CHI - J'Marcus Webb expected to be starting LT

Source: Chicago Tribune - Brad Biggs

Chicago Bears OT J'Marcus Webb has all but been awarded the team's starting left tackle spot.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Webb is physically gifted but needs to play with more consistency. This signals that Chris Williams will move inside to Guard.

BUF - RB Fred Jackson thinks team is a playoff sleeper

Source: NFL.com

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson said he is fine with the idea that the team will be playing the role of playoff sleeper this upcoming season. 'I think you always want to be considered one of the best,' Jackson said. 'And we know that we haven't proven anything. We still have to step out on the football field and make plays and put us in a position to be known as one of the better or dominant teams ... So we don't mind being a sleeper. We don't mind being a team that nobody talks about, just because, like I said, we haven't proven anything. Hopefully we let our play talk for us when we get out there.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We agree with Jackson here. So long as QB Ryan Fitzpatrick stays healthy, the Bills are going to make a run at a Wildcard spot. The improvements to the defense were huge and should help them immensely in 2012.

ATL - Mike Smith says offense will become more pass-heavy

Source: NFL.com

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said the offense needs to be more versatile, which is why they will incorporate more passing in 2012. 'I really think that in the National Football League, when you have to run the football, there's going to be times that it happens in the season, you're going to have to be able to do it,' Smith said. 'That's why we've got Michael Turner, but it is a spacing game now. And when we say a spacing game, it is about throwing the football and being able to move the ball through the air. You've got to have the weapons, so our identity is we want to be as explosive as we can, both running and throwing the football.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a Dirk Koetter offense, which means the ball will be heavily spread around in the passing game. Roddy White and Julio Jones will be the primary targets, but don't forget about TE Tony Gonzalez either. Fantasy owners should also take note as this shift in offensive philosophy could mean more touches for RB Jacquizz Rodgers and fewer touches for Michael Turner.

DEN - WR Brandon Stokley likely to earn roster spot

Source: CBSSports.com

Denver Broncos WR Brandon Stokley appears to be safely on the 53-man roster and should work extensively as a slot receiver.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stokley may win the WR3 job behind Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker. His main competition is Bubba Caldwell. Stokley has great timing and chemistry with QB Peyton Manning dating back to their days together with the Colts.

DEN - WR Eric Decker, WR Demaryius Thomas showing versatility

Source: CBSSports.com

The notion that Denver Broncos WR Eric Decker will be the possession receiver and WR Demaryius Thomas the deep threat in the offense appears to be false as both have been targeted all over the field by QB Peyton Manning in training camp. Expect that versatility to continue as they grow more comfortable with Manning.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Decker has emerged in training camp as Manning's favorite target and has rarely dropped a pass. Thomas is getting better at running the entire route tree and his size/speed combination makes him a very attractive target for the future Hall of Fame QB. We wouldn't be surprised if both finish the year as top 15 fantasy WRs in 2012.

NE - Ryan Mallett showing improvement

Source: The Associated Press

New England Patriots QB Ryan Mallett has shown an increased comfort level with the offense in training camp. Mallett spent much of his rookie season trying to catch up after the lockout eliminated rookie camp and organized team activities. 'He's way ahead of where he was last year,' head coach Bill Belichick said. '(He) knows more about what we're doing, I think has a better understanding of what the defense is doing and has run the plays - he's actually run them. Last year, we were putting them in and he had never done them before.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mallett has one of the strongest arms in the NFL but needed to develop more control on his passes. He's competing with Brian Hoyer to be the primary backup behind Tom Brady. There's a chance New England could put one of those two backup QBs on the trade block at some point during training camp.

NYJ - Changing scheme might benefit RB Shonn Greene

Source: The Star-Ledger Jenny Vrentas

The New York Jets plan to be more physical on offense, and they'll concentrate more on running the football. After being a primarily zone-running team with former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and Bill Callahan, new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano plans to put a greater emphasis on gap-scheme plays. He wants the team to thrive as a power running team, with the offensive linemen knocking defenders off the ball and the running backs like RB Shonn Greene plowing straight ahead at a designated gap. 'We can lead this league in rushing again,' running backs coach Anthony Lynn said. 'I have no question.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This type of system is much better for Greene. He's a straight ahead runner who loses momentum when he has to change direction. Having predetermined holes will help Greene be more decisive. When/if Tim Tebow takes over at QB we'll see more zone/read option mixed into the playbook.

BAL - DT Haloti Ngata bulked up

Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens DL Haloti Ngata is still committed to playing at 345 pounds this season, 10 pounds heavier than in 2011, although there are reports that he looks heavier than that in training camp. Ngata added the bulk because he felt he wore down last season. 'Right now, I can feel the power,' Ngata said. 'We'll just see how it goes. As the season goes, if I feel like I need to lose the weight, then I'll probably try to lose the weight during the season. For now, it's up and we'll see how it goes.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Opposing QBs just cringed at this headline.

DEN - Sign ILB Keith Brooking

Source: The Denver Post - Jeff Legwold

The Denver Broncos signed LB Keith Brooking (Cowboys) Monday, Aug. 6. Terms of the deal were undisclosed

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brooking gives the Broncos better veteran depth at the LB position. He can be a two down player for the Broncos and a potential starter while D.J. Williams serves a six game suspension.

CHI - Beginning to show concern for ILB Brian Urlacher

Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Mark Potash

Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher (knee) missed his fourth consecutive practice with a sore left knee Sunday, Aug. 5, and the injury is a concern for the team. 'It's always a concern when you have an injury at the end of the year and you miss some time in the offseason,' Smith said. 'But he should be OK.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Urlacher's no spring chicken and injuries are always a concern with a player his age. He doesn't need every practice rep because he's a seasoned vet, but the Bears would like to get him on the field as soon as possible.
