Hi Folks,

Welcome to Friday. Hope you're heading towards a great weekend. We've got the news and notes you need plus some great new podcasts ready for you from our Cecil Lammey and Sigmund Bloom.

Please allow me to preach for a second. In the wake of the Junior Seau tragedy, please know this: if you're dealing with something so big that suicide is a thought, talk to someone. Don't keep it bottled up. There is NO shame in admitting that you need help. None. Drop the macho posturing and tell someone you need help.

There are several good resources out there. www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org seems to be one. They have a hot line that is 1-800-273-TALK They also have a chat area. The main thing is to not keep it all inside putting on a front that things are ok. Seriously.

Off the soap box now. Thanks for reading and I hope you have a great Friday.

BAL - DE Terrell Suggs tears Achilles

Source: ESPN.com

Baltimore Ravens LB Terrell Suggs (Achilles) tore his Achilles tendon, according to league sources. 'We found out about it on Monday. He (Suggs) said he would be visiting with a specialist early next week,' general manager Ozzie Newsome said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A devastating blow to the Ravens Defense here. Suggs will likely start the season on the PUP list and could be eventually placed on season ending Injured Reserve. He thinks October is when he could come back from this injury but that is wishful thinking. Most Achilles' injuries require 12 months to come back to full strength.

MIN - RB Toby Gerhart ready to carry the load

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune

Minnesota Vikings RB Toby Gerhart said he is preparing to carry the rushing load if RB Adrian Peterson (knee) is not ready to start the 2012 season. 'I'm preparing to be the guy,' Gerhart said. 'I try to do that every year. But this year it's a little more prevalent. I'm doing everything I can to be here, work hard, work with the new guys we have coming in. I'm pushing everybody and getting pushed by other guys. Preparing to be the guy, depending on whether Adrian comes back.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gerhart and Peterson are both coming back from knee injuries but should be ready for the start of the regular season. Gerhart is nearing the end of his rehab process and fully expects to work out at Offseason Training Activities.

CLE - McCoy's fate sealed before the draft?

Source: Tony Grossi - ESPN Cleveland

Tony Grossi, from ESPN Cleveland, speculates that QB Colt McCoy's fate may have been sealed with the team when his father sounded off about the club’s handling of his son's concussion in a December game against the Steelers last year.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy was hammered by Steelers OLB James Harrison yet came back into the game and continued playing even though it was obvious he had been concussed. His father's comments didn't seal his fate but it must not have been well received by the franchise. If they keep McCoy he will likely play as a backup behind rookie Brandon Weeden.

NYJ - OC not talking about Tim Tebow’s role

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano would not discuss the role QB Tim Tebow will have on offense this season. Sparano said Tebow could play one to 20 plays per game during the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tebow will be used in a number of different ways so long as he is the backup behind Mark Sanchez. The Jets will likely have a Wildcat package installed for Tebow, and could use it when the offense is stalled or when they're in a goal to go situation.

DET - RB Ryan Grant considering offer

Source: ESPNMilwaukee.com - Jason Wilde

Alan Herman, agent for free-agent RB Ryan Grant (Packers), said Grant is currently considering an offer from the Detroit Lions.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It would be an interesting move for Grant here. The Lions need veteran depth at the RB position with the injury concerns with Mikel LeShoure, Jahvid Best, and Kevin Smith. Grant could also reunite with Reggie McKenzie on the Raiders.

OAK - Believe RB Darren McFadden can be a workhorse back

Source: San Jose Mercury News - Tim Kawakami

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said he believes RB Darren McFadden can carry the football 25-30 times a game; however, Allen added a team needs a tandem to carry the load. 'The running back position in this league, I think you have the ability to use different people. Because those runners take such a pounding on a play-in and play-out basis,' Allen said. 'Does (McFadden) have the ability to be the lead back? Absolutely and he will be. But we’re going to have to find ways to spell him some, too.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McFadden is one of the best RBs in the game when he's healthy. He's a threat to score every time he touches the ball and dangerous as a receiver out of the backfield too. However, he's never played a full 16 games in his career and was only on the field for 7 games in 2011.

OAK - Expect RB Darren McFadden to take part in minicamp

Source: San Jose Mercury News - Tim Kawakami

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said he expects RB Darren McFadden (foot) to fully participate in the team's mandatory minicamp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He may participate but we're certain the Raiders will be very cautious with their star RB.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning has same demeanor

Source: NFL.com

Denver Broncos WR Brandon Stokley said he is enthusiastic about his reunion with QB Peyton Manning and added his demeanor has not changed. The players took part in offseason workouts this week. 'It was great, it felt like a practice almost,' Stokley said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manning has a different jersey now, but is still the same guy he's always been. He'll work extremely hard to put himself and his team in a position to succeed. With a healthy Manning under center the Broncos are a favorite to win the AFC West and could make a run at the Super Bowl.

BAL - Unlikely to sign veteran RB

Source: Matt Vensel - Baltimore Sun

Matt Vensel, from the Baltimore Sun, reports the Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta said it is unlikely that the team will sign a veteran RB after drafting Bernard Pierce (Temple) in the third-round. "I think this year we're content," he said. "We like the young backs we have. … We'd prefer to spend the money at another position."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pierce has elite balance and is a strong north/south runner with an extra gear when he gets to the open field. He can grind down a defense as the game goes on and should be a fine backup behind Ray Rice. Pierce does need to work on his pass protection, but should be able to beat out Damien Berry and Anthony Allen for the No. 2 job.

MIN - Christian Ponder happy with Matt Kalil selection

Source: 1500ESPN.com - Tom Pelissero

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder said he is excited with the addition of OT Matt Kalil in the NFL Draft. Ponder feels Kalil will provide the protection he needs to go through all of his reads. 'It is huge,' Ponder said. 'A lot of time last year, it didn't necessarily have to do with the protection. A lot of times I wasn't comfortable getting to my third, fourth reads, checking the ball down. Instead of just checking it down when a guy is wide open, I'd just run ... That's something I have to get away from. It's easy to break the habit. It's just going to make it so much better having full confidence in the protection.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of course Ponder is happy! Kalil was seen as the best Left Tackle in this draft class and will help protect Ponder this year. Ponder is a talented but injury prone QB who needs to be protected better than less fragile QBs.

OAK - Still have confidence in Terrelle Pryor

Source: San Jose Mercury News - Tim Kawakami

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said the team remains confident in QB Terrelle Pryor becoming a pro quarterback despite the addition of QB Matt Leinart. 'We’re always going to try to make moves to do whatever we feel like is going to make this football team be better. And we’ve brought another quarterback in to compete,' Allen said. 'At the end of the day, just like anything else, we’re going to have everybody compete and the best players are going to play and that’s how we’re going to stack the depth chart up.' Allen added Pryor has all kinds of talent.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 2011 Supplemental Draft pick is still very raw and needs more time to develop. We'll see how he looks this year in the preseason before determining where he's at in his development.

NYJ - Stephen Hill agrees to terms

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

The New York Jets have agreed to terms with second-round draft choice WR Stephen Hill on a four-year deal worth $5 million. Sixty percent of Hill’s contract is guaranteed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill is a big WR who is a dangerous deep threat because of his long speed. He reminds many in the scouting community of Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas. Hill is not as strong as Thomas but has good ball tracking ability and will high point passes consistently. He'll be a great target for either Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow.

CAR - To work out WR WR Jacoby Jones

Source: John McClain - Houston Chronicle

John McClain, from the Houston Chronicle, reports via Twitter that former Texans WR Jacoby Jones will visit the Carolina Panthers today.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Panthers could use Jones for depth at the WR position and as a Kick/Punt Returner. They're looking for competition behind Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell. Currently they have David Gettis, Seyi Ajirotutu, Joe Adams, Armanti Edwards (PR), and Kealoha Pilares behind Smith and LaFell in their WR corps.

OAK - Will have competition for No. 2 QB job

Source: San Jose Mercury News - Tim Kawakami

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said QBs Matt Leinart and Terrelle Pryor will compete for the backup quarterback job during training carmp. The loser of the competition likely would be the No. 3 quarterback.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Leinart can't beat out a raw prospect like Pryor then he's best served hanging up his cleats. Pryor is big, athletic, and has a strong arm but he's far from being ready to play as a pro.

BAL - Michael Oher expects to stay on right side

Source: BaltimoreRavens.com - Garrett Downing

Baltimore Ravens OT Michael Oher said he expects to stay at right tackle as long as OT Bryant McKinnie is on the team.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While it's not the blind side for QB Joe Flacco we think Oher fits better on the right side. He struggled with edge rushers when he was on the left and it's why the Ravens added a veteran like McKinnie.

NE - WR Tiquan Underwood released

Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

The New England Patriots have released WR Tiquan Underwood.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not a surprise here given the Patriots signed WR Jabar Gaffney yesterday. Underwood was released the day before the Super Bowl, but recently was re-signed to a futures contract.

NE - WR Julian Edelman on the bubble?

Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman could be the odd-man out following the signing of WR Jabar Gaffney.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edelman may be able to stick on the roster because he can play as a WR, KR, and even on defense as a DB.

BUF - No deal imminent with QB Vince Young

Source: The Buffalo News - Mark Gaughan

There is no deal imminent between the Buffalo Bills and free-agent QB Vince Young (Eagles) after Young worked out for the team. He has already left Buffalo.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Young has no rush to sign and has not gotten that much interest in free agency. The market for his services could get hotter if injuries hit the QB position in training camp.

KC - Not looking to trade WR Dwayne Bowe

Source: CBSSports.com

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said he is not looking to trade WR Dwayne Bowe, 'We never talked to anyone about a trade for Dwayne, nor did we field any calls … nor are we looking to talk to anyone about a trade for Dwayne Bowe,' Pioli said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bowe is the Chiefs Franchise WR who is the favorite target of QB Matt Cassel. They couldn't upgrade the QB position this offseason and it doesn't make sense for them to trade away the player who has the best chemistry with Cassel.

BAL - DE Terrell Suggs determined to return in 2012

Source: ESPN - Rachel Nichols

Baltimore Ravens LB Terrell Suggs (Achilles') said reports of him missing the entire 2012 season are premature and he's determined to prove the doubters wrong.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a great mentality for the veteran LB but the reality could be much different. Achilles' injuries need time to fully heal. Even if he's able to run in October he may not be near full strength and cutting/turning may still be an issue. The average return from a torn Achilles' to play in the NFL has been around 11 months based on a 2006 study.

NFL - S Nick Collins still considering options

Source: ESPNMilwaukee.com - Jason Wilde

Free-agent FS Nick Collins (Packers) is still trying to decide whether to continue his playing career or retire.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Collins says he's been fielding some phone calls as teams inquire about his surgically repaired neck.

GB - May decide to keep DT Anthony Hargrove

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tyler Dunne

The Green Bay Packers may decide to keep DE Anthony Hargrove even though he has been suspended for the first eight games of the 2012 season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hargrove's suspension was bigger than others involved in the BountyGate scandal because the NFL determined that he obstructed the investigation by the league and was lying to officials. He was a late March addition by the Packers as he signed a one-year $825k contract.

That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and have a great Friday. Remember what I said in the opening about talking to someone if you need help.
