SEA - TE John Carlson likely done for the year

Source: Everett Herald - John Boyle

Seattle Seahawks tight end John Carlson (shoulder) needs surgery to repair a torn labrum and is likely to miss the 2011 season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carlson was going to be a fantasy non-factor anyway with Zach Miller starting ahead of him. He can probably be dropped even in deep dynasty formats now.

NE - WR Wes Welker says he is fine

Source: CBSSports.com

Updating a previous item, New England Patriots WR Wes Welker (neck) talked to reporters Tuesday, Aug. 30, and said he's fine. Welker added it is up to the coaching staff whether he plays.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots are very clandestine when it comes to their injury report. Welker may be feeling fine, but the Patriots won't say anything positive or negative publicly about his condition.

SF - WR Michael Crabtree off PUP list soon

Source: CBSSports.com

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said during a radio interview that WR Michael Crabtree (foot) had an X-ray on his injured left foot with promising results, and that he will be taken off the Physically Unable to Perform list soon. Crabtree caught some passes Monday, Aug. 29, during the warm-up portion of practice, but was not running.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a make or break year for Crabtree. He's talented but has yet to play up to his potential in the pros. Crabtree is a risky pick, but is falling to the 10th round or later in most leagues.

NE - WR Wes Welker uncertain for Week 1

Source: CBSSports.com

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said he was uncertain if WR Wes Welker (neck) would be ready to start the season. Belichick added the injury reports do not have to be out until the first week of the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ah yes, the Patriots always play things close to the vest when it comes to injuries. Even Wikileaks couldn't get to the bottom of this Welker situation. We have a feeling he'll be listed as 'questionable' on the first injury report of the season. As we note in the other story, Welker says he's fine. But of course, he adds the patented New England line about it being up to the coaching staff as to whether he plays. He'll be out there.

NE - WR Chad Ochocinco making progress

Source: CBSSports.com

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick continues to praise WR Chad Ochocinco for his work ethic as he tries to pick up the offense. 'He's a lot further along then when he started,' Belichick said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ochocinco is failing in the preseason, but it's not from lack of effort. By all accounts he's been working really hard every day in practice, it's just not coming together for him on the playing field. Chemistry takes time, and Ochocinco could steadily improve as the season goes on.

TEN - Expected to meet with RB Chris Johnson

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Jason Cole

The Tennessee Titans are expected to talk again with RB Chris Johnson Tuesday, Aug. 30, in hopes of reaching an agreement on a new contract.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The two sides are still communicating, and that's a good sign. There are some who believe an agreement could come together soon. Right now Johnson has been falling to the 5th-8th pick in most drafts. Fantasy owners should feel blessed if they get him at that spot - especially if he ends up not missing any games.

TEN - RB Javon Ringer might miss preseason finale

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon

Tennessee Titans RB Javon Ringer (hip) is likely to miss a third straight preseason game Thursday, Sept. 1, against the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Mike Munchak is confident Ringer's absence won't hurt going forward. 'If he's a rookie, I'd say maybe quite a bit,' Munchak said. 'But the fact he's been here and knows our systems and it hasn't changed that much.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ringer should still be ready for the season opener, but he'll likely split time with rookie Jamie Harper if Chris Johnson is still holding out.

SF - RB Frank Gore receives three-year extension

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Eric Branch

The San Francisco 49ers have found common ground with RB Frank Gore on his request for a new deal, reaching a new three-year, $21 million deal that includes $13.5 million in guaranteed money. Gore will make $4.9 million in 2011. He said earlier in the day that he told his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, not to contact him until he felt the team was offering something fair. 'I want to be a Niner. I want to be here,' Gore said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's not DeAngelo Williams money, but it's better than the money Ahmad Bradshaw got. This is a great show of trust in Gore's ability to remain a strong lead back until he's 30. Kendall Hunter's dynasty stock takes a temporary hit, but this opens a buy low window for the budding talent.

NO - PK John Kasay coming on board

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The New Orleans Saints agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with free-agent PK John Kasay (Panthers) Tuesday, Aug. 30. The team is worried about the health of PK Garrett Hartley (hip).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hmmm. Maybe this Hartley injury is more serious than the team said. No surprise there that the team would be less than forthcoming with an injury as they negotiated with a replacement player. Bump Hartley down.

PHI - WR Jeremy Maclin ready for Week 1

Source: ESPN.com

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin (illness) said he will start in Week 1 against the St. Louis Rams. 'I feel fine. I feel ready,' Maclin said. The team and Maclin's doctors are confident that his symptoms related to cancer will not return.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It will be good to see Maclin back on the field in the regular season. Because of his illness you can expect to see him fall to the 7th round or later in most fantasy drafts.

IND - QB Peyton Manning won't play Thursday

Source: The Associated Press

Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning (neck) will not play in the team's final preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday, Sept. 1. However, he feels like he is getting healthier. The team is saying Manning will practice on a 'scripted' basis.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not a surprise here. The fourth preseason game is no place for Peyton Manning. He wants to be ready for the regular season but at this time has to be considered doubtful to play.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers unlikely to play in preseason finale

Source: CBSSports.com

The Green Bay Packers practiced in shells Tuesday, Aug. 30, and QB Aaron Rodgers again received limited reps. As has been the case the past couple of practices, QB Matt Flynn took the first-team reps at quarterback, signalling that Rodgers will probably not play at all in the team's final preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rodgers doesn't need to play this week. We'll see Matt Flynn start the game and Graham Harrell may end up taking most of the snaps once Flynn goes to the bench.

CIN - RB Cedric Benson not expected to miss games

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals RB Cedric Benson is not expected to miss any regular season games due to an arrangement between Benson's attorney and a Texas county prosecutor.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benson could still miss games due to a suspension because unlike Aqib Talib and Kenny Britt, he has admitted criminal liability. Still, chances are Roger Goodell lets this slide too.

CIN - Andrew Hawkins turning heads

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals WR Andrew Hawkins is turning heads in camp with his speed and work ethic and head coach Marvin Lewis may have him return punts in the last preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

'Young Baby Hawk' is a very talented player who has a very strong work ethic. While not the biggest receiver he makes plays with his quickness, route running ability, and speed. We could see him making the Bengals final roster.

NYG - QB Eli Manning has played poorly

Source: The Star-Ledger - Mike Garafolo

New York Giants QB Eli Manning hasn't performed very well in training camp and looked out of sync with his receivers during the preseason game against the New York Jets Monday, Aug. 29. He is often erratic in practice, but it hadn't translated over to a game until now. Manning threw two picks and looked uncomfortable in the pocket.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're in favor of waiting on QBs this year in fantasy drafts....unless you're targeting Eli Manning. We'd rather grab a guy like Matthew Stafford or Sam Bradford in the 8th round than take a chance on Eli. Fantasy owners should especially avoid him in leagues that deduct points for turnovers.

CIN - Don't want Andy Dalton running

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

The Cincinnati Bengals have made it clear that they don't want QB Andy Dalton scrambling like he did for 15 yards in the team's preseason game last week. 'It was the most awkward thing,' Dalton said. 'I've never slid before. In college I always dove head first. I have to work on my sliding. I tried I thought. But I got my foot stuck in the ground. It was just awkward and not how I wanted to do it.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dalton won't remind anyone of Michael Vick when he scrambles, and it's best to keep him in the pocket.

CIN - RB Bernard Scott likes new scheme

Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals RB Bernard Scott is in favor of offensive coordinator Jay Gruden's new ground attack; he rushed for 63 yards on six carries in his debut last week. 'When you see it, you hit it. You don't have to do too much reading. You can just go out there and play off your natural instincts,' Scott said. 'The last offense it was like you had two or three different keys you needed to read. To me, I could just never let it loose. I was reading and trying to play perfect instead of just playing football.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Scott could emerge in the Bengals backfield as this offense is tailor made for his skill set. Cedric Benson is the team's starter but failed to impress much last year and could lose touches to the more explosive Scott.

NYG - WR Domenik Hixon could return punts

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Ohm Youngmisuk

New York Giants WR Domenik Hixon could be used to return punts this year after WR Jerrel Jernigan muffed three punts and also fumbled Monday, Aug. 29.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hixon is a valuable receiver because of his ability after the catch and as a return man. He's not as explosive as Jernigan, but he won't muff as many punts.

PIT - QB Charlie Batch likely the No. 2 QB

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ray Fittipaldo

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Charlie Batch is the likely candidate to be the team's backup quarterback following the injury to QB Byron Leftwich (arm). Head coach Mike Tomlin said Monday, Aug. 29, that a final determination on the new backup will not be made until after the final preseason game. Tomlin gave QB Ben Roethlisberger a day off practice Monday, Aug. 29, and split the repetitions between Batch and QB Dennis Dixon.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Batch is the savvy veteran who won't give a game away with mistakes and poor throws. With the new rules for third-string QBs the Steelers could still bring Dixon on and off the field at their leisure as a subpackage QB if they want.
