SD - Mathews, Tolbert 1,1A

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is the team's first back on the field heading into the season, and he will be 'on the field a lot,' according to head coach Norv Turner. Mathews came into camp not in great shape, but has improved in every facet since. He is running patiently, protecting the ball, improving his pass protection and at catching passes. 'I'm not as nervous,' Mathews said. 'It's my second year. I haven't been through my second year, but coming into this camp it shows me it's a lot different.' Mike Tolbert will also get a lot of work and RB coach Ollie Wilson said the team might ride the hot hand.

Tolbert is still the better value here unless Mathews falls into the fourth round or later.

HOU - Hope RB Arian Foster returns soon

Source: HoustonTexans.com - Nick Scurfield

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (hamstring), who did not take part in the team's first preseason game due to a hamstring injury, may be back on the practice field Wednesday, Aug. 17.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Texans RB corps looks like a M.A.S.H. unit with four backs banged up. Foster led the league in rushing last year but did so with a knee injury. He's a phenomenal talent but durability has been a concern for him dating back to his days in college at Tennessee.

TEN - Holdout hurting RB Chris Johnson?

Source: NFL.com

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak wants RB Chris Johnson in camp because he feels he is losing valuable time to mesh with his new teammates, such as QB Matt Hasselbeck. 'He doesn't necessarily need book study,' Munchak said. 'He needs reps. He needs to be in the huddle. He needs to get to know the players. The quarterbacks (Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker) are both new. He's never been around them.' Johnson wants to be paid around $30 million guaranteed and at least $10 million per year.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The holdout of Chris Johnson is a serious concern for fantasy owners. If you're drafting now consider Johnson at the end of the top 5 RBs available.

NYG - RB Brandon Jacobs, RB Ahmad Bradshaw to share carries

Source: CBSSports.com

Expect New York Giants RBs Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs to continue to share the football during games this season. 'It's the same as last year,' Bradshaw said. 'We'll take turns.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As the Talking Heads say 'Same as it ever was.' Expect the touches to be split the same way they have been in the past provided both backs stay healthy this year.

CAR - Coach will name starting QB next week

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Monday, Aug. 15, that he will name a starting quarterback next week. He said he expects to have a clearer idea heading into the third preseason game Aug. 25, against the Cincinnati Bengals. QBs Jimmy Clausen and Cam Newton rotated the repetitions during practice Monday.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

In other words, he doesn't want to hurt Jimmy Clausen's feelings by making him the backup so early in the preseason even though he is the incumbent starter.

STL - RB Jerious Norwood dealing with knee ailment

Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Bill Coats

St. Louis Rams RB Jerious Norwood (knee) did not practice Monday, Aug. 15. He didn't appear on the post-game injury report Saturday, Aug. 13, after the preseason opener.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No, this is not a recycled news item from Norwood's past. At one time, he was one of the more exciting young backs in the league, but Norwood's name has been on the injury report way too often in his career to expect anything from him this season.

STL - WR Donnie Avery still unable to practice

Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Bill Coats

St. Louis Rams WR Donnie Avery (knee) was unable to practice Monday, Aug. 15.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd say Avery is looking less and less likely to win a big role in the Rams WR corps, but a lot of the guys Avery is competing with have been banged up in camp too. Still, with Avery tearing his ACL before the 2010 season, it is troubling that he is not back on the field.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald can't be franchised

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's contract includes a stipulation that prevents the team from putting the franchise tag on him after this year, according to two sources. Fitzgerald could leave the team without any restrictions at the end of this year if he is not signed to an extension before then. The team has already started talks about a new deal with the star receiver.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fitzgerald would be crazy to not let the market set his price, which means he is probably done in Arizona after this year.

NYG - QB Eli Manning compares himself to Tom Brady

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Matt Ehalt

New York Giants QB Eli Manning thinks he is a top-caliber quarterback, enough so to put himself in the same class as New England Patriots QB Tom Brady. 'I consider myself in that class and Tom Brady is a great quarterback, he's a great player and what you've seen with him is he's gotten better every year and he started off winning championships and I think he's a better quarterback now than what he was, in all honesty, when he was winning those championships,' Manning said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Expect this to get lots of play from Manning haters. Reality is that it's a non story. Manning is not as good as Tom Brady. Everyone knows that including Manning. But it makes good material for some fans.

NYJ - Joe McKnight could miss a week

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Joe McKnight (concussion) could miss up to a week with a possible concussion. RB Bilal Powell could step in and win the No. 3 running back spot.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We expect Bilal Powell to win the #3 job and be a great deep sleeper this year.

CLE - RB Montario Hardesty looking good

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (knee) looked good when he returned to full practice Monday, Aug. 15. 'It was good to see him out there,' head coach Pat Shurmur said. 'He made a couple nice runs. He caught the ball out of the backfield in some of the passing drills. He actually made a real nice catch.' He is listed as the No. running back on the depth chart behind RB Peyton Hillis, but the team plans to bring Hardesty along slowly to make sure his knees are fully healthy for the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It took a while for Hardesty, but he is building positive buzz. He is still more a backup than a co-committee back at this point, but if he continues to come on, he could take the edge off of Hillis's value. He is just as likely, however, to get hurt and potentially make Hillis a top 10 back like he was last year.

PIT - WR Mike Wallace ready for big season

Source: NFL Draft Bible - Bo Marchionte

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Mike Wallace said he has the opportunity to expand on his breakout season last year. 'Coaches trust me with more things giving me opportunity to put up big numbers,' Wallace said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wallace is mastering more of the route tree and he could finish as a top 10 wide receiver, although QB Ben Roethlisberger doesn't want to hear Wallace talk about his numbers.

HOU - RB Steve Slaton likely to miss second preseason game

Source: HoustonTexans.com - Nick Scurfield

Houston Texans RB Steve Slaton (hamstring) probably will not be able to play against the New Orleans Saints during the team's second preseason game. He is dealing with a hamstring, which forced him to also miss the first preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Slaton needs to get healthy or he's going to find himself on the cut list. If Slaton were to become available as a free agent expect teams like Denver or Washington to be interested.

WAS - QB John Beck to start Friday

Source: The Associated Press

Updating a previous item, Washington Redskins QB John Beck will start the team's second preseason game versus the Indianapolis Colts Friday, Aug. 19.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Beck has missed time with a groin injury and is competing with Rex Grossman for the starting QB job. He's a Shanahan favorite and will be given every opportunity to win the gig in camp.

SF - QB Daunte Culpepper does not sign

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Eric Branch

Free-agent QB Daunte Culpepper (Lions) worked out for the San Francisco 49ers Monday, Aug. 15, but did not sign a contract.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No getting his roll on yet for CPepp. The 49ers are looking for better competition at the QB position, but apparently need to think about adding Culpepper.

HOU - RB Derrick Ward injured in preseason game

Source: HoustonTexans.com

Houston Texans RB Derrick Ward (head) left the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 15, with a head injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That makes four Texans RBs who are battling injuries right now. The injury to Ward opened the door for Chris Ogbannaya to showcase his skill set as a runner and receiver on Monday night.

DET - WR Calvin Johnson returns to practice

Source: CBSSports.com

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (shoulder) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 16. Johnson's return means he will likely play in the team's second preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We shouldn't see much of 'Don Mega' in the second preseason game. However, in the third preseason game the starters should play around three quarters.

CAR - Jeff Otah remains sidelined

Source: Charlotte Observer - Ron Green Jr. and Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers OT Jeff Otah (knee) remained sidelined Monday, Aug. 15. He developed swelling in his surgically repaired knee during the first week of camp, and he has not practiced since. Head coach Ron Rivera said Otah has been attentive to his rehab and is progressing.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Otah's return was going to be big for DeAngelo Williams and the Panthers running game, so if this turns into a long-term issue, you have to be less excited about Williams and Jonathan Stewart this year.

HOU - RB Ben Tate's slow recovery frustrates coach

Source: HoustonTexans.com - Nick Scurfield

Houston Texans RB Ben Tate (hamstring) has been slow to recover from a hamstring injury. He did not play in the preseason opener Monday, Aug. 15. 'Tate just hasn't come along,' head coach Gary Kubiak said. 'Everything thought he could - our trainers, our doctors - but he hasn't. So, we'll listen to him.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's beginning to look like Tate will go down as a bust, but few will remember because of how spectacular Arian Foster has been as an undrafted free agent.

NYJ - WR Plaxico Burress expects to practice Wednesday

Source: ESPNNewYork.com

New York Jets WR Plaxico Burress (ankle) did not play in the preseason opener Monday, Aug. 15, against the Houston Texans, as expected, but he did say he will return to a full practice Wednesday, Aug. 17.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burress has done little for the Jets since joining the team because of the ankle injury. It's hard to imagine spending even a last round pick on him until we see him on the field.

SD - TE Antonio Gates practicing

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (toe) practiced in full for a third consecutive day Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Keep those fingers crossed.

NFL - Supplemental draft delayed

Source: ESPN.com

The National Football League postponed the supplemental draft, which was scheduled to be held Wednesday, Aug. 17. Teams will be advised of the new date once it is determined. It is still unknown if former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor will be eligible.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A little more drama in the Pryor saga...

SF - WR Michael Crabtree happy with progress

Source: The Associated Press

San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (foot) was 'encouraged' with his progress Monday, Aug. 15, from his injured left foot. He was moving around without the aid of his walking boot Monday.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Crabtree is nothing but a late-round flier this year. He is quickly fading from the fantasy radar, although we should never count out a player of his caliber.

SF - Alex Smith in QB competition?

Source: The Associated Press

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has said recently that QB Alex Smith is in a competition at quarterback with QB Colin Kaepernick. Harbaugh has yet to officially name a starter.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers have to be wondering why they ever gave Smith yet another chance. Of course, neither QB will have much confidence if the offensive line performs like it did against the Saints.

DEN - DE Ty Warren has triceps tear

Source: The Denver Post - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos DL Ty Warren's (triceps) MRI exam revealed a tear in his triceps muscle. However, the team is not ruling him out for the rest of the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A big blow to the Broncos defense here. Warren will monitor this issue in the coming weeks, but is not expected to have surgery. Denver would like to see if this injury can heal on it's own. Warren will miss part of the regular season and there's a chance he could miss all of this year.

DET - Nick Fairley in walking boot

Source: The Associated Press

Detroit Lions DL Nick Fairley (foot) was seen in a walking boot Tuesday, Aug. 16, and continues to receive treatment for his left foot.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fairley seems to be one the few non bright spots for Detroit right now as they clearly need him back on the field.
