HOU - RB Arian Foster riding bike

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (hamstring) did not practice again Tuesday, Aug. 9, but he was riding a bike. The team does not feel they need to rush him back, and Foster is being listed as day-to-day.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopefully we'll see Foster in the second or third preseason game just to allay any fears about the condition of his hamstring. If we don't, it might be prudent to move him down to the bottom of the elite RB tier and into the middle of the first round.

CAR - WR Steve Smith has dislocated finger

Source: CBSSports.com - Pete Prisco

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith (finger) has been diagnosed with a dislocated finger, and he will require stitches.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This injury will keep Smith out of action for a week or week and a half. It was originally scary as the first reports from practice were that Smith was carted off the field. In reality, he walked off the field under his own power and then rode the cart to the training room. Finger injuries are never inconsequential to a WR but it's certainly not the normal "carted off" injury you fear with a leg injury. Looks like he'll miss about 10 days of practice which will hurt but not be disastrous.

HOU - RB Steve Slaton looking good

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Houston Texans RB Steve Slaton, who is listed third on the depth chart behind RBs Arian Foster and Derrick Ward, has been impressing in training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Slaton could be terrific trade bait for a team that loses an RB in training camp. It was only two years ago that he was a first-round pick in some fantasy leagues.

NYJ - WR Plaxico Burress not cleared

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Plaxico Burress (ankle) has yet to be cleared for action after rolling his left ankle last week. He took early repetitions in practice Monday, Aug. 8, and sat out for the rest.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burress looked like a good deep sleeper in non-PPR leagues when he signed with the Jets, but the addition of Derrick Mason and his early injury troubles have taken the shine off of that status.

IND - Three WRs starting on depth chart

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Phillip B. Wilson

Indianapolis Colts WRs Austin Collie, Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon are listed as the starting receivers on the team's first depth chart. TE Dallas Clark (ankle) and QB Peyton Manning (neck) are also listed despite being injured.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Collie should be able to pick up right where he left off last year - which was as the #1 overall fantasy WR before his first concussion. He's a bargain at his current ADP as long as you can tolerate the risk of his future concussions being severe enough to knock him out for an extended time. Take solace in the fact that his risk of concussions is the same as every other player in the league even though the effects of any concussion he suffers will be greater than most players in the league.

PHI - WR DeSean Jackson doesn't want to be a distraction

Source: ESPN.com

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson reported to camp Monday, Aug. 8, and was on the field for their afternoon practice. Jackson said he doesn't want to cause a distraction by holding out for more money. 'I have to be a professional about it. I can't cry. I can't moan about it. Being a man about the situation more than anything. I've been through a lot in my life. A lot of people said a lot of things, I was always too small, a lot of negative things. But I was still able to go out there and prove a lot of things on the field,' Jackson said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

According to reports the Eagles are more than willing to talk extension with Jackson. However, no talks have taken place just yet.

TEN - RB Chris Johnson a no-show

Source: ESPN.com

Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson did not report Tuesday, Aug. 9, continuing his training camp absence, which has reached 12 days. Tuesday, Aug. 9, is the deadline for players under contract to report to their clubs in order to earn an accrued season toward free agency.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson has two years left on his contract but appears determined to get the long-term deal he's been looking for. The accrued season toward free agency doesn't matter as much to him.

DET - RB Jahvid Best running well in practice

Source: CBSSports.com

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (toe) ran well in 11-on-11 drills during practice Tuesday, Aug. 9. He looked solid on multiple between-the-tackles power runs, and has regained the extra speed last season's turf toe injuries robbed from him. Best maintains he's ready to handle the extra workload created by the injury to RB Mikel Leshoure (Achilles').

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Best saw his fantasy stock rise when LeShoure went down. He is a big play back but lacks size and durability could be a problem for him again this year.

ATL - RB Gartrell Johnson seeing time with first-team

Source: CBSSports.com

Atlanta Falcons RB Gartrell Johnson is seeing action with the first-team offense in practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, with RB Michael Turner (personal) out for personal reasons.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

According to practice reports Johnson has been looking quicker and stronger than ever before. Johnson can get to top speed in a hurry and is the type of back who regularly wins collisions.

CIN - Andy Dalton to start preseason opener

Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Monday, Aug. 8, that QB Andy Dalton will be the starter in the preseason opener Friday, Aug. 12, against the Detroit Lions. 'It's a good opportunity for me,' Dalton said. 'I knew once I got drafted here there was going to be an opportunity.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It could be a bumpy ride for Dalton early on, but the Bengals don't have to face the Steelers or Ravens until the second half of the year, so he should have his feet under him before he faces the teeth of the schedule.

SD - Running back by committee approach in 2011

Source: Chargers.com - Christopher Smith

Running back by committee may be appearing in San Diego, as San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner is talking about using RBs Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert together this season. 'I don't know if (Mathews) will be one of the leading rushers because I think the emergence of Tolbert gives us a chance to have a one-two punch. Tolbert gives us a nice changeup. Obviously he's a physical, hard-to-tackle, punishing runner and Ryan has great speed, so it's a good situation,' Turner said. Turner went on to say that his current mindset is to use both runners this season. 'I think if you have guys that are diverse, you can use two,' he noted. Mathews didn't sound like he had a problem with the time share, saying the ability to have a one-two punch will really wear down defenses. 'We can both take it to the house. That's going to be hard on defenses,' Mathews noted. Tolbert also chipped in, saying that nobody on the team has a selfish attitude.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tolbert was too successful last year to be marginalized into a backup role this year. It looks like everyone who took Mathews #1 overall in rookie drafts over Dez Bryant is going to be disappointed. Mathews will likely be overdrafted in a lot of leagues again this year.

CHI - Starting O-line announced

Source: ESPNChicago.com - Michael C. Wright

Chicago Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice has announced his starting offensive line. OG Roberto Garza will start at center with OLs Chris Williams and Lance Louis at left and right guard respectively. OT J'Marcus Webb will be at left tackle and OT Gabe Carimi will start at right tackle.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A mostly young and unproven offensive line means that the short-yardage and pass protection woes of this offense are unlikely to end this season.

IND - WR Austin Collie could use new helmet

Source: The Herald Bulletin - George Bremer

Indianapolis Colts WR Austin Collie said he will not change the way he plays this year after suffering multiple concussions a year ago, but he could wear a new football helmet to prevent further concussions. The helmet he has been wearing looks to have more padding in the back, and the shape seems different than normal helmets.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Helmet technology has come a long way since the days of Mark Kelso. A good throwback image there for you old timers. Some of the new technology includes spring loaded facemasks as well as new ways to redistribute impact.

JAX - QB David Garrard out for preseason opener

Source: The Associated Press

Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard (back) will sit out the team's preseason opener against the New England Patriots. QB Blaine Gabbert will receive the start. The team is holding Garrard out simply as a precaution.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a great opportunity for Gabbert to show what he can do. He's the franchise QB of the future but will sit behind Garrard until he's ready to start. We believe Garrard will likely begin the season as the starter but could be replaced by Gabbert if he struggles during the year.

- WR Anthony Gonzalez says players use HGH

Source: USAToday.com - Nate Davis

Indianapolis Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez isn't sure how many NFL players use human growth hormone, but he is sure that it is being used. 'How many guys are on it, that's hard to say,' Gonzalez said. 'It could be 10, it could be a hundred or more; either way, it's too much. But around the league, you see guys on Sunday, and things don't add up; they don't look right. I see guys I saw in college, now they're in the NFL and they look totally different.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

HGH testing will help the NFL get a handle on illegal performance enhancing products.

CLE - RB Montario Hardesty remains out

Source: CBSSports.com

Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (knee), who is apparently still recovering from a knee injury that wiped out his 2010 season, gave no timetable for his return. The Browns insist he is not still hurt.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hardesty could play a big role as a complementary back behind Peyton Hillis this year. He's incredibly talented but has a long injury history.

SF - WR Michael Crabtree expected for Week 1

Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

According to a team source, San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (foot) could be ready to play late in the exhibition season. However, Crabtree will likely be held out until the regular season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a make or break year for Crabtree. We'll see if this foot injury makes him start slow when the season begins.

OAK - Denarius Moore standing out

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vittorio Tafur

Oakland Raiders rookie WR Denarius Moore has been a star of training camp so far. WR Darrius Heyward-Bey said the team has nicknamed him 'Smooth' because he doesn't look like he's going fast and he catches everything that goes his direction. 'Denarius, that's a ball player right there, smooth,' Heyward-Bey said of his new teammate.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moore has been the star of camp almost every day for the Raiders. At this rate, he'll be starting for the team soon. He shouldn't last longer than the top 20-25 of rookie drafts where the league has been paying attention to training camp, and he's close to late round sleeper worth in redraft leagues.

SD - RB Ryan Mathews unlikely to play Thursday

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (leg) is unlikely to play in the team's preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 11. He has been hampered by a slightly strained muscle in his upper leg. 'In the early preseason games, we always err on the side of caution,' head coach Norv Turner said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's beginning to look like Mathews is just not a very durable RB. This is a minor injury but it is keeping him from building a head of steam going into his second season.

CAR - WR Legedu Naanee feels comfortable in offense

Source: Panthers.com

Carolina Panthers WR Legedu Naanee is hoping to capitalize on his knowledge of the team's offensive system and step ahead of the other receivers still trying to learn it. 'With the other receivers not really knowing what's going on yet and me being able to help out with the nuances of the offense, I'm looking to take advantage of that and have a big year. It's exciting,' Naanee said. He said the Panthers' offensive system isn't that different to what he played in with the San Diego Chargers, noting much of it is the same but the terminology has changed a little and there are a few other variations.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Panthers really have no established wide receivers after Steve Smith, so Naanee has an opportunity to redeem himself after a disappointing year in San Diego last year. Naanee started the year as the #2 receiver, but was almost irrelevant by the end the season.

BAL - RB Ricky Williams passes physical

Source: The Associated Press

Baltimore Ravens RB Ricky Williams passed his physical Tuesday, Aug. 9, and is practice with his new team. He is expected to be the backup running back to RB Ray Rice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The arrival of Williams takes the shine off Jalen Parmele as a handcuff for Rice owners. Williams isn't the same player he used to be but should be a more than adequate backup and role player for the team.

MIN - QB Joe Webb to remain at QB

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Mark Craig

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said QB Joe Webb will remain at quarterback for the team. 'No, we really want to see Joe as a quarterback,' Frazier said. 'He's a tremendous athlete, and he can do some other things, but to be fair to Joe and our team, we need to let him concentrate on quarterback, not having it in the back of his mind, 'Am I going to be moved to receiver?' Who knows? He may end up being our No. 2 quarterback, and now you're one injury away from that guy being in the game. So we want to have the best guy in the No. 2 spot. If it's Joe, it's Joe. If it's Christian (Ponder), it's Christian.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Webb is a fantastic athlete and could be moved to WR if he doesn't develop as a QB.

WAS - QB John Beck limited in practice

Source: CBSSports.com

Washington Redskins QB John Beck (groin) was limited to 7-on-7 drills in practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, because of a groin that remains sore. Beck moved fine but the team does not want to have him execute bootlegs and rollouts yet. QB Rex Grossman took all the snaps with the first-team offense during the 11-on-11 session.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Beck has been looking inconsistent in training camp so far and this injury certainly isn't going to help his bid to win the starting job.

DET - RB Maurice Morris still sidelined

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Maurice Morris (hand) remains sidelined due to a broken right hand. His return date is unclear.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Aaron Brown is the backup RB at this moment and Boise State stud Ian Johnson is next in line after Brown right now.

NYG - WR Domenik Hixon taking it slow

Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Ohm Youngmisuk

New York Giants WR Domenik Hixon (knee) is taking over other practice off during the early part of training camp, as he makes his way back from a serious knee injury last season. Hixon rested Monday, Aug. 8.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hixon is currently battling for the #3 job with Victor Cruz. Steve Smith still hasn't been re-signed and he will not be a factor until mid-season even if he does, so Hixon can play a decent-sized role for this team this year.

CLE - Greg Little displays some rust

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns WR Greg Little, who had a stellar practice Saturday, Aug. 6, had three drops in practice Monday, Aug. 8. Little is trying to get up to speed after being sidelined for a year due to NCAA infractions at the University of North Carolina.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Little has shown inconsistent hands in practice so far, but it could concentration more than anything else as Little was a natural hands catcher at North Carolina.

CLE - More on WR Mohamed Massaquoi

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Tony Grossi

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi (foot) has a small chip fracture on his left foot, said a source. Massaquoi is still in a cast, but team president Mike Holmgren said Monday, Aug. 8, that the team hopes to have him back on the field next week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Massaquoi is a looking like a bust. He might not get much of a chance to prove himself this year if second-round pick Greg Little and second-year player Carlton Mitchell perform well at wide receiver.
