DET - RB Kevin Smith on roster bubble?

Source: Carlos Monarrez - The Detroit Free Press

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz indicated that RB Kevin Smith (knee) is not guaranteed a spot on the final roster, reports Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press. 'I don't know,' Schwartz said. 'I'll cross that bridge when we get there. I don't know that there's very many people that have 100% earned a spot.' Smith has not shown explosiveness during the preseason and is averaging only 2.4 yards per carry. Schwartz said he wants to see Smith have more trust in his knee while on the field.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith could certainly find himself bounced from Detroit if he can't start getting it done on the field. There would likely be at least a few teams interested in adding Smith if he can pass a physical.

WAS - QB Donovan McNabb expected to practice next week

Source: Barry Svrluga - The Washington Post

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said he expects QB Donovan McNabb (ankle) to return to practice next week, reports Barry Svrluga, of The Washington Post. McNabb attended the team's practice Tuesday, Aug. 31, without shoulder pads, but he also didn't have the protective sleeve he wore on the lower part of his left leg Monday, Aug. 30.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The week 1 matchup vs. Dallas is the Sunday night game, so seeing McNabb practice next week would go a long way towards avoiding any risky game-time decision issues, which would force you to start the other half of your QBBC.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger to seek shorter suspension

Source: Sal Paolantonio - ESPN

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger plans to ask NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to reduce his six-game suspension by at least three games when the two meet Friday, Sept. 3, reports ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, according to sources. Some in the Roethlisberger camp feel the six-game suspension was too harsh because Roethlisberger was the first player suspended by Goodell who had not been arrested, charged or convicted of a crime. However, some in the camp don't want to anger the commissioner by asking for too much. Team president Arthur Rooney II will also join Roethlisberger for the meeting. Most believe Goodell has planned to lower the suspension to four games all along.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Roethlisberger is undervalued already, any reduction in his suspension will just increase that, and also give a small boost to the draft stock of Mike Wallace, Hines Ward, Heath Miller, and Rashard Mendenhall.

CHI - TE Greg Olsen still on trading block?

Source: Mike Mulligan - The Chicago Sun-Times

Chicago Bears apparently still have TE Greg Olsen on the trading block, a source told Mike Mulligan, of the Chicago Sun-Times. The Bears look to be reluctant to trade Olsen for less than a second-round or third-round draft choice but his market value at this point is around a fifth-round draft choice. Olsen could get traded because the Bears would have had to use TE Brandon Manumaleuna as an extra blocker with OT Chris Williams' struggling. One thing that could hurt a trade is that Olsen is friends with QB Jay Cutler.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Olsen doesn't really fit the Mike Martz system and the Bears could try to trade him for help at other positions.

DAL - WR Roy Williams should be ready for Week 1

Source: Rob Phillips - DallasCowboys.com

Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams (hip, back) should be ready for the start of the regular season even though he likely will not play in final preseason game with a hip flexor and a sore back, reports Rob Phillips, of DallasCowboys.com.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys are getting both Roy Williams and Dez Bryant back for week one of the regular season. That should help Tony Romo get on track in a big way once the games start to count.

MIN - QB Joe Webb believes there is a spot for him

Source: Chip Scoggins - The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Minnesota Vikings QB Joe Webb said he believes there is a spot on the final roster for him, reports Chip Scoggins, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. 'I'm pretty sure there is,' Webb said. 'Coaches, they highly recommended and liked what I did so far so I'm just going to continue to do what I do.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Webb has a lot of work to do as a developmental quarterback, but the team loves his overall athleticism. We have a feeling he'll find a spot on the final 53-man roster as the Vikings couldn't sneak him through to the practice squad.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant will not play Thursday

Source: Todd Archer - The Dallas Morning News

Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said WR Dez Bryant (ankle) will not play in the team's final preseason Thursday, Sept. 2, in part because the first-team offense will not play in the game, reports Todd Archer, of The Dallas Morning News.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bryant is extremely competitive and wants to play in the game, but the Cowboys know that it's best to save him for the regular season.

CLE - Top two QBs to sit Thursday

Source: Matt Florjancic - ClevelandBrowns.com

Cleveland Browns QBs Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace will not play in the team's final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 2, according to Matt Florjancic, of ClevelandBrowns.com.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Without Delhomme and Wallace the Browns will look to rookie Colt McCoy and career backup Brett Ratliff to lead the way. McCoy could actually find himself on the cut list if he doesn't have a decent showing on Thursday night.

STL - Rams do not appear interested in RB Derrick Ward

Source: Jim Thomas -The St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The St. Louis Rams do not appear interested in unrestricted free-agent RB Derrick Ward (Buccaneers) because he has not looked good during the preseason, according to Jim Thomas, of St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ward has looked terrible this preseason, and it's no mystery why the Bucs decided to let him go. The Rams have a need for better depth at the RB position behind Steven Jackson, but Ward is not an upgrade over the likes of Kenneth Darby and Keith Toston.

CLE - RB Montario Hardesty expected to play Thursday

Source: Steve Doerschuk - The Canton Repository

Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (knee) appears to be ready to play in the final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 1, reports the Canton Repository's Steve Doerschuk.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hardesty has a great skill set and could become one of the best backs in the National Football League. However, he's been banged up throughout his college career and has already had nagging injuries in his short time as a pro. If he can't stay healthy the Browns may move forward with a guy like Peyton Hillis as their primary back in 2010.

CIN - QB Carson Palmer, offense hitting their stride

Source: Carlos Holmes - The Dayton Daily News

Carlos Holmes, from the Dayton Daily News, reports that despite a 35-20 loss to the Bills, the Bengals' first-team offense moved the ball at will and scored on the opening drive. Striking quickly on offense is something the team is hopeful they can accomplish early and often this season. The growing confidence between Palmer and his new receiving corps is starting to show as well. Palmer spread the ball around generously, completing passes to four different receivers. "If they protect Carson and allow him to stand upright and assess the defense, Carson is going to do what he's done his whole career. He has the ability to pick defenses apart," wide receiver Terrell Owens said in a postgame interview.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bengals struggled in the red zone and on third down situations last season, but that doesn't look like it will be a problem in 2010. Carson Palmer is playing with the most complete set of weapons that he's ever had and could easily finish the season as a top 10 fantasy quarterback if he stays healthy.

PIT - QB Charlie Batch could be released

Source: Mark Kaboly - The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Charlie Batch has performed well in limited opportunities this offseason, but he could be the odd man out in earning a spot on the final roster, reports Mark Kaboly, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Batch has not take a single snap with the second team or first team during training camp, and he has only taken 17 snaps in three preseason games. However, the team will need to cut 22 players by the weekend and may decide to keep a younger player over Batch.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We think multiple teams would put in a claim for the vet with some of the backup QB situations around the league looking ugly right now.

TB - RB Derrick Ward was not part of long-term plans

Source: Charlie Campbell - PewterReport.com

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris said free-agent RB Derrick Ward (Buccaneers) was not part of the team's long-term plans since RB Cadillac Williams is healthy and FB Earnest Graham will be a bigger part of the offense, report Wolf Heard and Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com. Morris said, "It's more about the resurgence of Mr. Cadillac, Mr. insurance Graham, where the team is heading and where we're going, our plan and direction, and how we want to go about our business. No decision is made lightly around here. It was just time to make it today." Morris added, "Right now, we have Cadillac who we are happy to have and also we have insurance Graham back there playing fullback for us and he is able to carry the ball as well. And also we have our little spark-plug in Huggy (RB Kareem Huggins) and he is able to come in a provide a different look for us and different turn around."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of note here is the prominent mention of Earnest Graham as depth at RB. Kareem Huggins is skyrocketing up the back half of some savvy owner's draft boards, but Graham could have just as much value, if not more, in the event that starter Cadillac Williams misses time.

BUF - RB Fred Jackson may be limited to start

Source: Chris Brown - BuffaloBills.com

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said RB Fred Jackson (hand) might be limited early in the season, reports BuffaloBills.com's Chris Brown. Gailey said, "I think he'll still be limited early in the year. But he's going to be able to be on the field for us and give us some plays."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That limitation early in the season is all the opening CJ Spiller needs to bust a few big plays and force the Bills coaches to give him at least 15 touches a game and make him a very RB3/Flex, with RB2 potential in PPR leagues. Jackson has been falling in drafts, and it looks like it was warranted.

NYJ - CB Darrelle Revis' fine up to $512,213

Source:

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis' 31-day fine total is now up to $512,213, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Whether it comes from Revis blinking or the Jets blinking, we're still pretty sure Revis will play for this team by the end of September. Emmitt Smith had a two-week regular season holdout once upon a time, so Revis isn't exactly in uncharted territory.
