KC - TE Gonzalez Skips Voluntary Mini-Camp, Dealt to Atlanta on Thursday

Source: ESPN.com

Gonzalez had expressed his desire to get out of K.C., and on Thursday he got his wish - Tony Gonzalez is now an Atlanta Falcon. Gonzalez went to Atlanta in exchange for a draft pick next year.

The Chiefs insisted they also improved their chances for success in 2009 by making the trade.

The Falcons will send a second-round pick in 2010 to Kansas City in exchange for Gonzalez, the only tight end in NFL history selected to 10 Pro Bowls.

"It's somewhat bittersweet," Gonzalez told FOXSports.com. "I love Kansas City. I grew up in Kansas City. The city means a lot to me. I got there when I turned 21. It will be sad to leave a city I love.

"But I'm looking forward to making a Super Bowl run in Atlanta every year for the next three or four years. With Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White and now myself, we have the chance to be in the top five in the league in offense every year. How could I not be excited to join that team?"

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matt Ryan obviously gets a huge boost with this. Roddy White and Michael Turner should probably get a bump in your projections due to Gonzalez's presence in the mix - there are a lot of weapons on the Falcons' offense to worry about now. It's easy to overlook just how good Gonzalez has been for the last decade. Since 1999, he's been the #3 or better TE in nine seasons. His worst season was 2005 where he "fell" all the way down to the #7 TE. And last season he was the #1 ranked TE in the league. He's no spring chicken any more but this is clearly a guy that has plenty of production left.

NE - QB Brady Participating in Workouts Without Limitations

Source: Tom Curran, NBC Sports

At the close of his annual predraft press conference, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said that quarterback Tom Brady has no physical restrictions placed on him as he takes part in offseason workouts with the team.

Brady's left knee was famously blown out during the first game of the 2008 regular season. After surgery to repair the ACL and MCL in early October, an infection set in and the knee had to be irrigated and antibiotics were administered for the next six weeks.

The infection resulted in a buildup of scar tissue and caused some looseness in the MCL but Brady has powered through his rehab, far exceeding expectations.

In late December, sources familiar with Brady's situation told us his rehab was significantly behind schedule. That fact would likely lead to backup Matt Cassel being franchised and Brady being limited at least into the summer.

Yet the progress Brady made from that point through early March made Cassel expendable (he was franchised, but dealt to Kansas City). And the limitations expected have conquered.

And while the risk of swelling or soreness certainly can't be ruled out as Brady ramps up his preparation for 2009 (sources have said Brady will have to wear a knee brace for the remainder of his career), that he's at this point in April is excellent news for New England.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As the report above points out, we'll have to wait and see how Brady's knee responds to being tested during training camp. So far, so good, but reconstructed knees are always a dicey proposition. Stay tuned.

ARI - Interest in WR Boldin/Trade Brisk

Source: ESPN.com AP Report

The Arizona Cardinals have received inquiries from "quite a few teams" about disgruntled wide receiver Anquan Boldin, and more conversations are anticipated as draft day approaches.

But general manager Rod Graves and coach Ken Whisenhunt repeatedly emphasized at the team's pre-draft news conference Tuesday that they would be happy to keep Boldin and eventually try to sign him to a new contract.

"Quite a few teams have called but we have no offers from those teams," Graves said. "Anything can evolve from this point through draft day so that's where it is right now."

Speaking to reporters at his charity event in Florida last week, Boldin appeared open to staying with the Cardinals, a departure from earlier requests to be traded.

"I didn't say a trade was necessary," Boldin said. "I just want something to get resolved. It's something that's gone on long enough."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It seems pretty clear that the Cardinals are seriously interested in dealing Boldin - for the right price. Whether they get any takers may depend on how the NFL draft shakes out - Boldin could be moved in the course of this weekend's draft, or shortly thereafter. Stay tuned...

KC - RB Johnson Participates in Voluntary Camp - Expects to Be With Team

Source: Bill Williamson, ESPN.com

The Kansas City Chiefs will hold a voluntary minicamp Friday through Sunday, which Larry Johnson's agent, Peter Schaffer, said the running back will participate in. Schaffer said Johnson has been participating in the team's offseason workout program, which began March 30.

Johnson originally asked to be traded but Schaffer maintains Johnson has changed his mind, and the fact that he has been working out with teammates and is about to go to the minicamp are both strong signs that he wants to be a Chief and that the team wants to keep him.

The Chiefs recently won a grievance against Johnson based on roster bonus money. The grievance win cleared the way for the team to easily release Johnson, who was suspended by the team and the NFL for a total of four games for off-field issues in 2008. The Chiefs have yet to make any announcement on Johnson.

Schaffer said it is his belief that the Chiefs are interested in keeping the 29-year-old workhorse.

"If it was a foregone conclusion that the Chiefs would cut Larry I don't think he'd be going to the minicamp," Schaffer said. "We're planning on moving on. That's why Larry is with the team."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It looks like Johnson and his representative are focusing on preparing for the 2010 season and that Johnson is behaving like a good "team guy". We'll see if he can convince the new coaching staff that he belongs on their team.

CIN - Ex-Steeler RB Russell Now a Bengal

Source: Geoff Hobson, Bengals.com

The man who scored the Steelers' first touchdown in their February Super Bowl victory is the newest Bengal and it could impact next week's draft.

Cincinnati picked running back Gary Russell off waivers Friday after he played in 15 games last season, including the postseason, and had five rushing touchdowns. The 5-11, 215-pound Russell was cut Thursday when the Steelers re-signed backup quarterback Charlie Batch.

Russell averaged 22.3 yards as Pittsburgh's kick returner, a spot the Bengals are seeking to fill with wide receiver Glenn Holt's departure in free agency.

Russell was thought to be emerging into a productive big back heading into his third season in Pittsburgh. If the Bengals had been seeking Cedric Benson's backup in the draft, they may now feel they don't have to expend a pick there with Russell in the fold. At least maybe not a high one since his strength is viewed as a zone runner that would fit into some of what the Bengals do.

It also impacts the roster, particularly if the Bengals continue to keep just three running backs, along with a fullback. If Russell arrives as advertised, that would leave just one spot behind him and Benson. That puts former No. 1 pick Chris Perry, veteran Kenny Watson and a rookie that flashed late last year, James Johnson, in a free-for-all.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Given the frequency of injuries in the NFL, it is always worthwhile to know who is backing up the teams' starter - if Russell impresses, he'll be #2 on the depth chart in Cincy. He could be a key waiver wire acquisition in the event that Benson misses time during 2009.

DEN - 3 Bronco Backs Sit Out of Mini-camp Due to Injury

Source: Lindsay H. Jones, The Denver Post

When it comes to tailbacks, the 2009 minicamp started much like the 2008 season ended. That is, with as many players in the training room as on the field.

Only Correll Buckhalter, Lamont Jordan and Peyton Hillis participated in practice Friday. J.J. Arrington, Selvin Young and Ryan Torain all are still recovering from injuries.

"They split everything today in the one-back sets," McDaniels said, adding that Hillis also worked as a fullback.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There is a crowded backfield in Denver as of April, and it remains to be seen who will win coch McDaniels' esteem and trust. But it is hard to make the team from the training room - it appears that Buckhalter and Jordan are safe bets to make the team, but everyone else is fighting for jobs. Stay tuned.

CHI - Bear's WR Plans for 2009 Detailed by GM Jerry Angelo

Source: Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times

Can the wide receiver corps be better in 2009?

JA: "I think it will be better given the fact that our quarterback is going to play better. I feel that is something that is going to help that position and the whole off overall. We want to create some depth there. I feel we are going to be better there as a whole. [Devin] Hester going into his second year, Rashied Davis being slotted as a slot receiver, we do like Earl Bennett a lot, the familiarity with [Jay] Cutler. We feel good going forward. We could [do something] post draft."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cutler's arrival in Chicago should help push the Bears' passing game to a new level. If Hester continues to develop as a receiver and Davis continues to improve, they could be undervalued in fantasy drafts this year. As the article points out, Bennett's history with Cutler might mean a big uptick in his numbers, too - he saw just 1 target during 10 games of action in his rookie campaign. Bennett is the guy I'm most excited about here in April. It's early but make sure he's on your radar. Also keep an eye on how the WR and TE corps (Greg Olsen, Desmond Clark) mesh with Cutler during training camp.

WAS - QB Campbell on Thin Ice in Washington - Management Seeks New Solution

Source: Joseph White, AP Writer reported in the Kansas City Star

Dan Snyder has selected seven quarterbacks in his nine drafts as the owner of the Washington Redskins.

And he's still looking.

Having failed to land Jay Cutler in a trade, Snyder and the Redskins spent a couple of days last week entertaining Southern California's Mark Sanchez, the latest possible solution to a long-term quarterback vacuum that's existed in Washington since the early 1990s.

But Sanchez is a hot commodity, unlikely to be there when the Redskins are scheduled to be on the clock with the No. 13 overall pick in the NFL draft late Saturday afternoon. The well-guarded secret in the back offices - the biggest cause for suspense as the week goes along - is how much Snyder and Co. are willing to trade to move up to a top five spot, or even higher, to guarantee they can get a player they really want.

"I think anything is possible," executive vice president for football operations Vinny Cerrato said Wednesday. "It's just what you're willing to give up."

Not since Mark Rypien have the Redskins had a quarterback who kept the undisputed starting job for more than a couple of seasons. Since buying the team in 1999, Snyder has targeted the position twice in the first round, taking Patrick Ramsey in 2002 and Jason Campbell in 2005. Lower-round selections Todd Husak (2000), Sage Rosenfels (2001), Gibran Hamdan (2003) and Jordan Palmer (2007) failed to establish themselves even as backups. Colt Brennan (2008) spent his first season playing third string.

Campbell put up cautious numbers - 13 touchdowns and six interceptions - last year in his first full season as the starter, but the Redskins clearly feel they can do better. They were outbid - barely - by Chicago in a bid to get Cutler from Denver, which necessitated what Cerrato called a "candid discussion" with Campbell to persuade the quarterback that the brass really does think he can do the job.

"With Jason, we are going full speed," coach Jim Zorn said. "He is every bit being handled as though he's our starting quarterback, both through word and deed. With the draft, part of knowing who's out there and what's available, we've got to get to know these players a little bit. And if there's any opportunities to better our football team, we want to talk to those guys, too. Nothing is etched in stone."

That's a party line the Redskins have to toe, at least for now, especially because Sanchez might carry an overwhelming price tag. Seattle is thought to be interested in Sanchez at No. 4, and a move up to No. 3 would likely cost Washington its third-round selection this year and a first-rounder next year - and possibly more.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Campbell hasn't gotten any ringing endorsements from the Redskins this off-season, and he's clearly on thin ice as the team's starter. We'll see what happens during the draft and subsequently, but unless Campbell makes major strides during 2009 (if he gets that chance), it's clear he'll be moving on soon.

NO - Status of Injured WRs Moore, Colston, RB Bush and TE Shockey Updated

Source: Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

He [GM Mickey Loomis] said receiver Lance Moore had successful shoulder surgery and returned to the team's practice facility this week. He said Moore should be healed in time for the regular season, but he doesn't know how far along he'll be by the start of training camp. He said tailback Reggie Bush and receiver Marques Colston are doing well in their recoveries from knee surgery. He didn't specify a timetable, but the hope is that they'll be on the practice field at some point during the OTAs and minicamp. And he said tight end Jeremy Shockey is fully healed from last year's sports hernia and that he's "anxious to have a great season."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dynasty owners of Shockey would love to see him bounce back from a sub-par 2008 to post top-tier numbers - if he's truly healthy, that goes a long way to putting him back into the elite tier of fantasy TEs. Bush, Colston and Moore are all big pieces of the offensive puzzle down in the Big Easy - we'll see how they look when the pads go on and hitting starts.

NO - WR Moore Undergoes Shoulder Surgery

Source: Brian Allee-Walsh, The Times-Picayune

Barring a late move today by another team, Saints wide receiver Lance Moore is expected to shed the tag of restricted free agent and soon commence rehabilitation on his surgically repaired left shoulder.

Moore underwent surgery Monday to repair a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum, an injury he sustained while lifting weights during a team workout several weeks ago, according to sources. Noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery in Birmingham, Ala.

Moore, who drew league-wide notoriety after catching 79 passes for 928 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, is looking at approximately eight to 10 weeks of rehabilitation.

He is expected to miss the team's mini-camp for rookies and veterans June 5-7, but he should be ready for the start of training camp in late July.

When asked about Moore's injury and surgery, Saints Coach Sean Payton text mailed this response Thursday to The Times-Picayune: "Yes ... Andrews on Monday ... left shoulder ... miss minicamp ... ready for training camp."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As the article noted, Moore had a very productive season during 2008 (being a favorite target of Drew Brees is a good thing). Before you invest a pick in Moore, though, make sure he's fully participating in training camp and that his shoulder is back to 100%.

BUF - FA RB Rhodes Signed

Source: ESPN.com AP Report

Running back Dominic Rhodes agreed to a two-year contact with the Buffalo Bills, giving Buffalo an established starter while Marshawn Lynch opens next season serving a three-game suspension.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Buffalo needed insurance for the first 3 games of the season as Lynch is out and Fred Jackson is agitating for a new contract. With Rhodes in the fold, the Bills will have an experienced back to turn to if necessary. Depending on what happens with Jackson, Rhodes might be a guy to draft on the cheap, to plug in early in the season if that move would help your team - you'll certainly want to look at him if Lynch is in your draft-day plans.

PIT - WR Holmes, Seven Others Miss Opening Of Steelers' OTAs

Source: Mike Bires, Beaver County Times

Eight Steelers, including Super Bowl XLIII Most Valuable Player Santonio Holmes, did not participate Monday in the first of 14 organized team activities.

OTAs are not mandatory.

Coach Mike Tomlin even joked to a group of reporters that, "You guys aren't taking attendance, are you?"

Still, even though the OTA workouts are voluntary, most Steelers do show up for all or most of them.

Beside Holmes, the Steelers' star wide receiver, others missing the first OTA were safeties Troy Polamalu, Ryan Clark and Tyrone Carter, linebackers Larry Foote and Lawrence Timmons, running back Willie Parker and defensive end Nick Eason

All eight of them are expected to be here at the Steelers' practice facility on the South Side of Pittsburgh for next week's mandatory mini camp (May 1-3).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As long as Holmes and the rest of his team mates show up for mandatory mini camp, this will become a non-event. However, pay attention if Holmes or Parker don't show up - that would be a red flag for fantasy owners. Holmes was in attendance during the 2nd and 3rd day of workouts (he blamed his absence on travel issues).

DET - Lions Near Finalized Contract with Georgia QB Matthew Stafford

Source: Steve Wyche, NFL.com

The Lions are in negotiations to finalize a contract with Georgia QB Matthew Stafford, who would be the No. 1 overall draft pick Saturday.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said the team hoped to have a contract completed for the top selection — without naming him — during a pre-draft news conference Tuesday.

Lions officials have been negotiating with Tom Condon and Ben Dogra, who not only represent Stafford but also Baylor OT Jason Smith. Smith is believed to be an option for the Lions should a deal with Stafford not materialize. Detroit also is considering Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry, whom many consider the most complete player in the draft.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anything can happen during the draft, but Stafford has been positive in public about relishing the challenge of helping to turn around the 0-16 Lions during his career.

CAR - QB Delhomme Extends Contract 5 Years, $20 Million Guaranteed

Source: John Clayton, ESPN.com

Proving their faith in Jake Delhomme is unwavering, the Carolina Panthers have given their quarterback a five-year extension.

The new deal is worth $42.5 million and includes $20 million in guaranteed money, a source said.

The extension will keep Delhomme with the Panthers through the 2014 season and free up valuable cap space. Delhomme was scheduled to make $6.325 million next season, the final year of his contract. His cap number, however, was $11.091 million and the Panthers were close to maxing out their salary cap, burdened by Julius Peppers' one-year tender worth $16.7 million.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well, now that's settled. With an outstanding duo of backs behind him in the offense and high-caliber targets like Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad to throw to, Delhomme is in a very attractive situation. He may not be a fantasy starter anymore, but you could do worse than Delhomme as your bye-week fill-in/#2 fantasy QB.

TEN - QB Young Analyzes His 2009 Role on the Team

Source: Jim Wyatt, The Tennessean

"I am just going to keep my mouth closed, man. All I am doing this year is shutting up, just shutting up and working," Young said. "I am going to smile and shut up and continue being Vince Young, a happy smiling guy. I am not going to get into the hoopla any more because of the fact I can't win any more, I see.

"I am just going to shut my mouth and play my role and if they need me then I will be available as a weapon."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Young's difficulties last season led to his demotion - he may wind up #3 on the depth chart with Ramsey in town. That's not what fantasy footballers expected when he was drafted in the first round...

SF - PK Nedney Re-signed Through 2011

Source: NFL.com Wire Reports

The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday that they have signed linebacker Parys Haralson to a four-year contract extension through 2013 and kicker Joe Nedney to a two-year contract extension through 2011.

Terms of the deals weren't disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers started to turn around their team last season - Nedney could be one of the better fantasy PK this year if the improvement continues.

DEF - PHI CB Brown in Contract Dispute With the Eagles

Source: Bob Brookover, Philadelphia Inquirer

Day Two of the public portion of the Sheldon Brown contract dispute wasn't any more civil than the first one.

The veteran cornerback said he was not the only player on the Eagles' roster who was upset with his contract situation.

"Without a doubt there are going to be more problems," Brown said. "I'm not the first guy and I'm not going to be the last guy. What's the incentive for guys like Trent Cole and Mike Patterson to play above their heads? Everybody's situation is different and everybody handles their business in a different way. This situation could have been handled in a different way. I was forced to put it out there."

Brown said his decision to go public with his displeasure Monday was triggered by team president Joe Banner's unwillingness to recognize that a contract dispute existed.

"Joe did an interview with 610 [WIP-AM] and he said my contract has not been presented as an issue," Brown said. "I take that personal. My agent [Jason Chayut] has been talking to him for four months. [Banner] was throwing him off to some guy I don't even know."

Banner said he intentionally evaded the question about Brown during his radio interview, and the team president emphatically denied other claims by Brown as well.

"I didn't answer directly intentionally," Banner said. "I said, 'A lot of players at different times feel that their contracts aren't right' and that none of the situations at that time looked like they were going to become big deals. Sheldon wasn't going to go public and the agent wanted to do it privately and professionally. Now, he's claiming he wanted me to go on WIP and come out about his contract? He's trying to throw red herrings out there."

Chayut, according to Brown, was told by the Eagles to talk to Andrew Brandt about his contract situation. Brandt was hired by the Eagles this off-season to help with salary-cap issues.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Contract disputes are part of the business side of the NFL, but the Eagles have always been noted as hard-nosed negotiators, especially with aging veterans. Brown was 30 as of March 19th - he's already played 7 seasons with the Eagles, which means he's on the cusp of being an aging veteran. Stay tuned...
