DEN - QB Kyle Orton named starter

Source: FM 104.3 The Fan - Denver

FM 104.3 The Fan in Denver is reporting that Kyle Orton has officially been named the starting QB for the Broncos.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We expected a competition all through training camp, so this move is a little surprising. Orton was added in the trade that sent Jay Cutler to Chicago, but he was in competition with Chris Simms for the starting gig. Apparently coach Josh McDaniels wanted to avoid a QB controversy and decided to make Orton the starter as we head to training camp.

CLE - QB Derek Anderson misses practice Saturday

Source: Steve King, The Orange and Brown Report

Steve King, of The Orange and Brown Report, reports Cleveland Browns QB Derek Anderson (leg) missed his second consecutive practice Saturday, June 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

After going through loosening up drills with his teammates, Anderson, wearing a white wrap around his lower right leg, went with several other injured players to a place at the other end of the practice fields complex that's not visible to the media. He was jogging slightly and did not appear to be in any serious pain.

CLE - RB James Davis impresses in Lewis's absence

Source: Mary Kay Cabot, The Cleveland Plain Dealer

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports that Cleveland Browns rookie running back James Davis has impressed head coach Eric Mangini while getting extra reps in place of starter Jamal Lewis, who is recovering from offseason ankle surgery. Mangini said he was "extremely pleased" with what Davis has done, and praised him for picking up things quickly and not making the same mistake twice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mangini likes both Davis and Jerome Harrison, so it might be foolish to expect Lewis to get the same workload he has gotten for the last two seasons while Romeo Crennel was the head coach. Davis was a highly touted played entering his senior season, but like the rest of the Clemson Tigers, he disappointed and his draft stock dropped to the sixth round. He could keep the Browns from drafting or signing a running back to replace Lewis with a great rookie year.

MIA - WR Greg Camarillo has another full practice

Source: Edgar Thompson, The Palm Beach Post

Edgar Thompson, of the Palm Beach Post, reports that WR Greg Camarillo made it through his second full practice out of the three that have taken place in this round of OTAs.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thompson commented "At this rate, it'd been surprising if he's not in the starting lineup for the Sept. 12 season opener", and we tend to agree. Camarillo is well ahead of schedule and will have a great chance to hold off Davone Bess and rookie Patrick Turner if he can begin training camp completely healthy.

CLE - RB Jamal Lewis misses team drills Friday

Source: James Walker, ESPN.com

James Walker, of ESPN.com, reports Cleveland Browns RB Jamal Lewis (ankle) did not take part in team drills Friday, June 12, and could be limited for the remainder of the team's minicamp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It was the 2nd straight day that Lewis missed practice, and the Browns are going to be careful with the veteran RB. Backup Jerome Harrison was in with the 1st team and has been working hard on pass protection because he feels that's been limiting his role on the field for the past 3 years.

SEA - HC Mora ends mini camp a little early

Source: Danny O'Neil, The Seattle Times

Danny O'Neil, of the Seattle Times, reports that Seattle head coach Jim Mora Jr. ended the final mandatory minicamp practice thirty minutes early in appreciation of the team's work ethic and attitude.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team cheered when Mora informed them that the practice was ending early. That's a great sign for the culture developing under the new coach, and the quality of the practices.

DEN - WR Brandon Marshall a no-show again on Saturday

Source: Mike Klis, The Denver Post

Mike Klis, of the Denver Post, reports that Brandon Marshall did not show for the second day of mandatory minicamp on Saturday, June 13.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall met with Broncos owner Pat Bowlen after missing Friday's session, so we can't imagine that meeting went well. This could get ugly very quickly.

MIA - QB Pat White struggles with accuracy

Source: Edgar Thompson, The Palm Beach Post

Edgar Thompson, of the Palm Beach Post, reports that Pat White had a myriad of bad throws in the morning practice on Saturday, June 13, from hitting the crossbar of the goalpost in a red zone drill, to pegging Bill Parcells goal cart on a throw to the corner of the end zone.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Head coach Tony Sparano put a good spin on White's progress, saying "Every day he's getting a little bit better at something.", but that would be hard to not do because White has come into the league with so much room to improve. It's going to be at least a year before he challenges to even be the backup QB in Miami.

CLE - WR Braylon Edwards injury from pickup basketball game?

Source: waitingfornextyear.com

Waiting For Next Year reports that WR Braylon Edwards recently twisted his ankle in a pickup basketball game, and that's why he's been missing practice for the Browns.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Browns have refused to comment on the injury, but it's not considered serious. The team will be careful with their star receiver as they want him to be healthy by training camp.

SD - RB LaDainian Tomlinson and WR Legedu Naane take snaps in Wildcat

Source: Kevin Acee, The San Diego Union-Tribune

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson and WR Legedu Naanee took snaps in the Wildcat offense at various times during practice this week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Naanee was an All-Star QB in high school and chose to play for Boise State because he would get a shot to play QB for the Broncos. After he was beaten out for the starting QB job by Jared Zabransky, Naanee made a position switch to WR. He has been very valuable for the Chargers as a special teams player, and it's an easy transition for him to line up at Wildcat QB. The Chargers may not use the Wildcat formation that often, but at least they have the option to do so if the situation calls for it.

Over his career Tomlinson has completed 8 passes on 11 attempts, with 7 TDs and 0 interceptions. Both Tomlinson and WR Legedu Naanee have lined up at Wildcat QB as the Chargers work a new wrinkle into their offense.

DEN - C Blake Schlueter signed

Source: Bill Williamson, ESPN.com

Bill Williamson, of ESPN.com, reports the Denver Broncos have signed seventh-round draft pick C Blake Schlueter. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Schlueter is small for a center (at 6'2" 290, which shows you how big NFL players have gotten lately), but he's a technician and terrific athlete who should remind Bronco fans of Tom Nalen. He could get a shot to play soon with current starter Casey Wiegmann pondering retirement, and backup Kory Lichtensteiger unproven at the pro level.
