PHI - QB Michael Vick will be eligible to play Week 3
Source: Adam Caplan - Scout.com
Adam Caplan, of Scout.com, reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick will be eligible to play in the team's Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Eagles will now decide the fate of backup QB A.J. Feeley. Several teams are interested in trading for the long time backup, and if the Eagles do get rid of him they will only dress two quarterbacks the first two weeks of the season.
TB - Offensive Coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski fired
Source: Jim Flynn - PewterReport.com
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Thursday, Sept. 3, that they have dismissed offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski. The team has promoted quarterbacks coach Greg Olson to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jagodzinski was just hired this offseason by new head coach Raheem Morris, so this is a pretty shocking development. This is bad news for the direction and focus of the Tampa offense, as we are less than two weeks from the start of the regular season. Something must be in the air, because Kansas City just fired their offensive coordinator Chan Gailey earlier this week.
CHI - RB Kevin Jones carted off Thursday
Source: Brad Biggs - the National Football Post
Brad Biggs, of the National Football Post, reports Chicago Bears RB Kevin Jones (ankle) was taken from the sideline to the locker room on a cart Thursday, Sept. 3, after suffering an ankle injury in the preseason finale.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jones, like Cadillac Williams has worked all the way back from multiple serious injuries, and like Williams, seems to have no luck when it comes to injuries. Stay tuned Friday for more info on this one.
JAX - RB Maurice Jones-Drew has leg contusion
Source:
CBSSports.com reports Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew (leg) suffered a leg contusion during the team's preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We really don't see the upside of playing your starters in week four of the preseason. Watch this one Friday to see an update for Jones-Drew.
WAS - WR Malcolm Kelly moves ahead of WR Devin Thomas
Source: Jason Reid - the Washington Post
Jason Reid, of the Washington Post, reports that WR Malcolm Kelly has moved ahead of Devin Thomas for the starting job opposite Santana Moss with a strong preseason. Reid also reports that Thomas "seemed to disappear mentally for a couple of weeks during the preseason, several people in the organization told me. The lack of maturity that contributed to his unproductive rookie season resurfaced, prompting some to wonder whether he will ever "get it."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Kelly has certainly looked fast enough to hang in the NFL, and he hasn't had any reported knee problems during the preseason. He is a big receiver who is great at going after the high target, and Kelly is also an excellent blocker in the run game. He's worth a last round flier in deep PPR leagues.
CIN - WR Chris Henry has learned from suspensions
Source: ESPN.com
ESPN.com reports Cincinnati Bengals WR Chris Henry said he has learned his lesson through the NFL's discipline against him. Henry has been suspended a total of 14 games in the last three seasons for violating league policy. 'Yeah, it helped me,' Henry said, according to USA Today. 'It helped me focus up, and it made me realize that if I continually wanted to play, I had to do right and be a professional.' QB Carson Palmer said he's convinced Henry has reflected on his ways and made changes. 'I'm very close with him. We spend a lot of time together,' Palmer said. 'I've seen it firsthand. He's a different person.'
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We've been hearing about this all offseason, and we're willing to give Henry the benefit of the doubt. He is a supremely talented athlete, that has Randy Moss-like ability, and guys like QB Carson Palmer are raving about his prospects for the 2009 season. If the Bengals offensive line can keep Palmer upright, he could finish as a top 10 fantasy QB, and WR Chris Henry will be a big help in getting him those numbers.
HOU - Kubiak: RB Chris Brown is short-yardage and red zone runner
Source: Marc Vandermeer - HoustonTexans.com
Marc Vandermeer, of HoustonTexans.com, reports that head coach Gary Kubiak told him that Chris Brown is the team's short-yardage RB. Kubiak said, "Our goal is to use him (Brown) basically as a short-yardage runner, a red zone runner and Steve's (Slaton) backup, so we have to plan to go about our business and hopefully we can keep him healthy. But he's shown flashes this preseason that he's still got it in him. That's important to our team."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
As Kubiak acknowledges, Brown has had trouble staying healthy. Slaton owners should root for Arian Foster to not make the team, because Foster is also a rugged short-yardage runner. If Foster is cut and Brown goes down, Slaton could get goal line carries again. This isn't a huge surprise, and it is part of the reason Slaton has been falling to the late-first and early-second rounds.
HOU - QB Matt Schaub making progress
Source: Nick Scurfield - HoustonTexans.com
Nick Scurfield, of HoustonTexans.com, reports that head coach Gary Kubiak said starting QB Matt Schaub has made a lot of progress with his injured ankle in the last 24 hours. He also said Schaub is "trying to get ready" for the season opener.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
There's still ten more days for Schaub to recover. We think he'll be ready for the season opener, but just in case, you should avoid the Schaub/Matt Cassel combo in your draft if you choose to wait on your starting QB.
CIN - RB Brian Leonard and RB DeDe Dorsey fighting for last RB spot
Source: Geoff Hobson - Bengals.com
Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports that Brian Leonard and DeDe Dorsey are the candidate for the #3 and last RB spot on the roster.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Leonard is more versatile, and can even play some fullback, but Dorsey is more explosive and a better playmaker.
DET - QB Matthew Stafford could clinch starting job
Source: Brian VanOchten - the Grand Rapids Press
Brian VanOchten, of the Grand Rapids Press, believes that a fair performance from QB Matthew Stafford will clinch the Lions starting QB job. His competitor, Daunte Culpepper, is sidelined after having to get eight stitches in foot. VanOchten thinks it would be a "huge upset" if Stafford doesn't win the job.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Lions early schedule includes Chicago, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Washington, and two of the hottest preseason defenses, Green Bay and New Orleans. Stafford will certainly make his share of rookie mistakes in those games, but starting from week 1 on could make the Lions offense more viable by the second half of the season. Calvin Johnson owners could also benefit from Stafford's big arm being in for all 16 games.
DEN - Want multiple draft picks for WR Brandon Marshall
Source: Bob Glauber - Newsday
Bob Glauber, of Newsday, reports the Denver Broncos' asking price for WR Brandon Marshall includes a first- and fourth-round draft pick.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Marshall's trade value has been diminished by his behavior, so unless someone is willing to give up a king's ransom (and then give Marshall the new deal he covets) no deal is going to happen.
MIN - Looking to trade QB Tarvaris Jackson?
Source: Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins - the Minneapolis Star Tribune
Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, reports the Minnesota Vikings have called teams to see what they would be willing to offer for QB Tarvaris Jackson, according to a league source.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Vikings should have little trouble landing at least a fifth or sixth round pick for Jackson with all of the backup QB problems around the league.
DAL - RB Felix Jones to see more time in red zone?
Source: Tim MacMahon - The Dallas Morning News
Tim MacMahon, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones could see additional time in the red zone this season. RB Marion Barber III has earned the majority of work in the red zone over the past three season. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said, "We love Marion down in the red zone. He's got a great track record. But obviously Felix can run down there as well. He's proven that he can do that. He's proven that he can run between the tackles."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jones is starting to go as high as the sixth round in some drafts. He's part of a tier of explosive limited-touch backs like Leon Washington and Darren Sproles.
JAX - Two roster spots for four young receivers
Source: Michael C. Wright - the Florida Times-Union
Michael C. Wright, of the Florida Times-Union, reports that Nate Hughes, Jarett Dillard, Mike Thomas, and Tiquan Underwood are competing for two roster spots. Thomas has missed all of the preseason with a hamstring injury, and could be a candidate for IR. Wright reports that Hughes had the lead earlier in camp, but Dillard has been coming on as of late.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We all know Troy Williamson's history with drops and inconsistency, and Mike Sims-Walker's injury history, so the winners of these spots could see significant action before long.
GB - RB Tyrell Sutton and RB Kregg Lumpkin fighting for last RB spot
Source: Greg A. Bedard - Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
Greg A. Bedard, of Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, projects RB Tyrell Sutton to make the Packers final roster over Kregg Lumpkin
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Both RBs are good enough to catch on somewhere else if they get cut. Sutton is an excellent receiver and adequate return man, even if he is too small and not fast or quick enough to be a real playmaker or workhorse. Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports reported that two other NFC teams are watching to see if Sutton is cut. Lumpkin is another very talented Georgia back who didn't stand out because he played with the likes of Danny Ware and Thomas Brown. He's had his share of health issues since coming into the league.
TEN - Not planning to sign QB Cleo Lemon at this point
Source: Aaron Wilson - the National Football Post
Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports free-agent QB Cleo Lemon (Ravens) had a good workout for the Tennessee Titans Thursday, Sept. 3, according to a league source. However, the team is not planning to sign Lemon at this point.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Lemon is now near the top of their "emergency" list at quarterback. Somewhere Patrick Ramsey is breathing a sigh of relief.
SF - RB Frank Gore, WR Isaac Bruce will not play Friday
Source: Matt Maiocco - the Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore and WR Isaac Bruce will not play in the team's preseason game Friday, Sept. 4.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gore and Bruce are veterans, and their spot on the final roster is more than secure. There's no need to risk an injury in the fourth week of the preseason.
CAR - WR Kenneth Moore pushing for No. 3 WR?
Source: David Scott - the Charlotte Observer
David Scott, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers WR Kenneth Moore has played well enough this preseason that he appears to be pushing WR Dwayne Jarrett for the No. 3 wide receiver job.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This is in line to previous reports from this week. Dwayne Jarrett has been a huge disappointment, and Moore has seemingly overtaken him as the Panthers' number three receiver. There's not a lot of fantasy production coming from the third receiver on a run heavy team, but if injuries strike in front of him on the depth chart, we could see Kenneth Moore become more of a fantasy factor.
CHI - Three battle for the third WR spot
Source: Bob LeGere - the Daily Herald
Bob LeGere, from the Daily Herald, notes the situation for Rashied Davis, Brandon Rideau, and Devin Aromashodu is similar. One will be the Bears' No. 3 wide receiver behind starters Devin Hester and Earl Bennett when the regular season opens under the lights Sept. 13 at Green Bay. But any one of them also could be cut by Saturday, when all NFL teams are required to reduce their rosters to 53 by 5 p.m. Chicago time.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Davis, the former Arena League star, is the most experienced player out of this group, but his experience might not win him the job. Rideau has perhaps the most upside out of this trio, but has only been active for 1 game in three years with the team. Aromashodu has been drawing praise from QB Jay Cutler, and could win the spot because of his intriguing mix of size and speed.
PIT - Fight for No. 3 WR position could continue into season
Source: Scott Brown - the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed and WR Mike Wallace continue to compete for the No.3 position at wide receiver. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians hinted the competition could continue during the regular season. Arians said both will play no matter who the No. 3 and No. 4 wide receiver is. "It might be 3A and 3B depending on our package, what we're asking out of those guys. I'm not saying either one's beat the other one out. They'll both play a lot," added Arians.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The players bring entirely different skillsets to the table. Sweed is a big rangy athlete who can catch the ball no matter where it is thrown, and Wallace is a burner with speed to spare who can stretch the defense. The Steelers have the potential for a potent passing attack if the running game can't get on track again this season.
UFL - WR Koren Robinson, RB Tatum Bell signed by Orlando
Source: Sean Jensen - the Pioneer Press
Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports free-agent WR Koren Robinson (Seahawks) and free-agent RB Tatum Bell (Broncos) have signed with the Orlando Tuskers of the UFL, the team announced Thursday, Sept. 3.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Tatum Bell proved last year that he could still play football when he stepped in for the Broncos after selling cell phones at a local mall. Koren Robinson's best days may be behind him, but he's hopeful to show off what he can still do for NFL teams that may be interested in signing him after the UFL's premier season is over.
CFL - Internet video reportedly ended CB Adam Jones' shot with CFL
Source: Paul Friesen - the Winnipeg Sun
Paul Friesen, of the Winnipeg Sun, reports an internet video that free-agent CB Adam Jones streamed live Tuesday, Sept. 1, reportedly ended Jones' chances of signing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. In the video, Jones said he was still looking for an NFL contract. Jones said, "I've got a clause in my contract, when I get a call from an NFL team I can go over. I actually got two calls today, so if they tell me tomorrow that Pacman's back, that'd be a bummer for all my Winnipeg fans. Go to the UFL and do my thing and get ready for a playoff run in the NFL, you know what I'm sayin'?" During the video, someone called Jones to remind him that Winnipeg was in the CFL and not the new UFL.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Wow, just wow. If this story were a movie, you'd laugh at it for being too ridiculous and unbelievable. We haven't seen a more regrettable online video since the "Star Wars kid" went nuts with his pretend lightsaber.
That'll do it for today, Folks. If you're heading to a draft today or tonight, knock 'em out. Show the poor guys in your league how it's done. Thanks for reading and we'll see you tomorrow with the update. J
